ADC to DVI

I have an "old" G4 733. It supports VGA and ADC connections. My CRT is about to fail and I wanted to use a new apple cinema display. Will the new 23" cinema display work on it? I have heard about adaptors like, Belkin's ADC to DVI adaptor for the older display connection issues, but I am not usre about it working with the new displays.
G4 733   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You need a Dr Bott Extractor II ( DVI to ADC - DVI display to Apple ADC connector), its about £25 + vat and works just fine. be careful you dont buy a scrren that is too big for your graphics card though.

My video card has a VGA and an ADc connector. Connected my 19" monitor using VGA connector.
Got a Belkin ADC to DVI adaptor for the ADC output.
Got a DVI to HDMI cable to connect to the TV.
    Everything plugged together Ok.
On powering up the Mac, the Widescreen TV shows the grey screen with the apple symbol and the spinning wheel, this disappears and the 19" monitor comes on. This displays the desktop picture, but no icons appear and that's all that happens. Power off theMac, power off the Widescreen TV, power on the Mac and it comes up normally. The grey bootup screen appears on the 19".
So how do I get the system to recognise BOTH displays. I've played with the System Preferences, but because the system won't recognise both screens I can't switch on the mirror option.
Any thoughts on the problem welcome.

I take it that OS10.5.5 is detecting my Viewsonic VA1912w Screen connected to the VGA; but for some reason has decided that there is NO display (my HDTV via HDMI) connected to the ADC.
I've been playing with this for a day or two now. With both screens attached and powered on I power on the G4. The grey "boot up" screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel appears on the HDTV screen, meaning the Mac has found it and is using it. While this is happening the Viewsonic is grey.
Then both screen go black, the Viewsonic goes blue, then puts up an old desktop picture, while the HDTV remains black. And that's all that happens.
I have to disconnect the HDMI cable from the HDTV, power down the HDTV & the Mac, then power on the Mac again to get it back.
So why would the Mac detect the HDTV, then decide it's not there?
I've tried adjusting the display settings and frequencies to no avail.

  • ADC to DVI and DVI to VGA on my G5

I have a G5 with an ATI 9600 video card that has both DVI and ADC outputs.  I cannot find am ADC to VGA adapter, but I was wondering if I could use and ADC to DVI adapter and then connect that to a DVI to VGA adapter and use a 2nd VGA monitor on my Mac.  Has anhyone tried this?
    Thanks!

ADC to DVI-D adapters pass digital, not analog. There is no way for DVI to VGA to receive analog from the ADC port.

  • Can I use the Apple ADC to DVI adapter with a VGA monitor?

    Hey everybody,
I have a quick question. I work on computers fr friends and family as a hobby. I have an ADC monitor and need ot be able to hook up computers with a VGA port on them to it. Can I use the Apple ADC to DVI adapter along with an Apple DVI to VGA adapter to successfully connect VGA computers to my ADC display? I was assuming this would work and ordered both adapters but now I have made myself nervous about weather or not this will actually work. Has anybody out there successfully done this? Thanks for your help in advance everybody.

You can't run an ADC display with a VGA computer without a converter. Adapters won't do it.
a VGA to ADC converter will drive the ADC display directly
    <http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1301>
If you have the Apple DVI to ADC adapter
    <http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=18 72D402&nplm=M8661LL/B>
you could use it with a VGA to DVI converter
    <http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1310>
It might be cheaper to get DVI graphics boards for the computers and use the Apple DVI to ADC adapter.
    <http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=18 72D402&nplm=M8661LL/B>
Your title says "Can I use the Apple ADC to DVI adapter with a VGA monitor?". If you want to connect a VGA monitor to a computer's ADC port you need the ADC to VGA adapter
<http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=1299> You can't use an ADC to DVI adapter followed by a DVI to VGA adapter, because the ADC to DVI adapter doesn't pass the analog video signals needed for VGA.

  • Pink Screen with 17" ADC and DVI converter

This issue could be with the Apple ADC to DVI convertor box or cable, but I can't confirm if it is that or my monitor. I am using a 17" clear ACD with a mac mini, and I started to get intermittant bright pink screens, which has progressed into pink all the time, and a horizontally squashed screen that shows the desktop twice (one on top of the other, both squashed).
I am pretty sure that the cable coming out of the convertor box is the culprit, since I was able to get it working normally by jiggling the cable, and it started acting up when I was plugging and unplugging some USB devices. Now it won't work properly at all, and I do not have an old computer to plug the monitor in directly to check with. I did plug the monitor and convertor into a G5 PowerMac, and had the same result. When I plugged in a newer 20" Apple aluminum display into the Mini, it worked fine.
The trouble is that all of the cables on the monitor and convertors are built in and not easily replaced.
    Any suggestions?

I bought a new ADC/DVI converter ($99) and that fixed it. I am almost positive it was only the cable.
My question is: why can't Apple PLEASE make these convertor boxes AND their monitors with removable/replaceable cables?
I ended up spending 10 times what I should have to fix the issue. it should have never broken in the first place, since it rarely even ever got touched, and had never been disconnected.
Just for grins, after I bought the new converter, I tried to open the old one to see if I could remove the cable. I could not even get the box open without destroying it.
My 20" Cinema Display has a dead bug inside it, and it is also impossible to open up without destroying it, just to clean it.
I just have to express my displeasure at Apple making their products non-servicable. What a waste.

Can I use the Belkin ADC to DVI Connector Cable to

    the G5?
    Yes.
If so, am I right in assuming that I still use the

    this adaptor cable?
Yes. The adapter just provides the digital video signals. You still need to plug in the power, USB, and FireWire (if needed) cables from the display
All the documentation seems to be restricted to G4s,
When the adapter came out the only ADC computers were G4s. They haven't updated the documentation, but it will work on a G5.

  • ADC to DVI connector

    Hi,
Apologies if this is frequently asked/answered, but I find it difficult to find a completely straight answer anywhere.
I have an older Power Mac G5 with an AGP 8X Pro graphics card (with one ADC and one DVI connector).
I have just bought 2 new Apple 20" DVI Cinema Displays.
Can I use the Belkin ADC to DVI Connector Cable to connect one of the DVI displays to the ADC output on the G5?
If so, am I right in assuming that I still use the Cinema Display power connector in addition to using this adaptor cable?
All the documentation seems to be restricted to G4s, and for some reason the cable doesn't seem to be carried by the online Apple Store here in the UK.
    Thanks,

  • ADC to DVI adapter for 30" compatability

My G5 has the Radeon 9600 Pro with a DVI and a ADC output. Can this card drive an Apple 30" display if I had a ADC to DVI dongle cable to get two DVI outputs? Does such a thing exsist?
    G5 dual 1.8GHZ (4 RAM slot model)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

OK, an update. The ATI RADEON 9800 Pro for Mac definitely does not do the trick. Ordered from Amazon, installed and no improvement in resolution. Out with the new and in with the old. The saga continues. No one and I mean NO ONE seems to be able to give a definitive answer to what card(s) will go into a G5 Dual to power a 30" monitor at full resolution. So far my Mac guru has been wrong twice. Sure you can "get" something like the X800 in oh, say 45 days. shannon

  • Apple ADC to DVI Adapter -- Power Brick gets HOT

    Hello all,
I just purchased an Apple ADC to DVI adapter to connect my 23" Cinema Display to my new Mac Pro. It works perfectly, but I've noticed that the white, square power brick is generating quite a bit of heat. It feels sort of OK (within tolerance) at the edges but toward the middle it's noticeably hot. Not hot enough to burn my hands, or cook an egg, but definitely toasty warm. Is this normal? Or does it sound like I have a defective one?
    Alan

If by "on" you mean the adapter is connected to your display and plugged in to an AC outlet, and you have an image on your display coming from your computer, then it's not dead.

  • Fromac ADC to DVI

    hi
i bought a formac ADC to DVI adaptor the other day so I can make use of my two displays.
I but my spare display has a VGA input so i bought a dvi to vga adaptor and connected this to the ADC to DVI one and thought this would be perfect
    But.........
everything on my monitor is green i can see the desktop and everything else but its a different shads of green,
I kno the DVI to VGA adaptor is in perfect working order and I kno my LCD is so Im guessing the ADC to DVI adaptor is faulty
or am I missing something and I shouldn't be using the DVI to VGA adaptor on the end of the ADC one and this is what is causing the problem??
    thanks

I shouldn't be using the DVI to VGA adaptor on the end of the ADC one and this is what is causing the problem??
Yes, that's most likely the problem.
Dr. Bott made an ADC to VGA adapter. Very rare.

  • ADC to DVI Convertor

    Hi
I have just bought a MacPro to be used as a server for a small office but want to use an old Apple 17 inch LCD Studio Display with an ADC connector. I was surprised to find that the MacPro only has DVI ports...? Anyway will one of these ADC-DVI convertors work....?

  • 23" ADC from the USA connecting to ADC to DVI to my Macbook Pro, problem???

    Hi guys,
I love my 30" display, don't get me wrong but its to big for everyday use so i use it for movies etc, i think i might buy the 23" ADC display from the USA as the exchange rate is good but if i use a UK adc to dvi adaptor, will there be too much power to the screen and damage it?
    Thanks
    Danny

I assume you are thinking of buying an older 23" display, as the newer ones have DVI?
I believe the ADC/DVI power brick converts the native voltages to those the display needs on it's ADC connection so you should be fine...always worth a call to Apple to check.
The ADC/DVI power brick might be multi-voltage/standard but I'm not at home so I can't check mine for you unfortunately.

  • ADC to DVI adaptor

I just bought a new Macmini, abd want to use it with my OLD monitor (the first flat panel Apple offered).  I'm told by a genius at our local Apple store that I need an ADC to DVI adaptor.  Someone on this discussion site said I need to use an adaptor with a brick.  Is this so, and where do I find one?  I googled the adaptor, and it only showed me adaptors with no brick.  Any help with this would ne appreciated.

    Dear MaryAnn,
I think it makes more sense at this point to bid a fond farewell to the old monitor if it is ADC.
The problem is that Apple's ADC monitors ran power, video and USB through one cable. It's the "power" side of the equation that requires the brick; the monitor can't get power from the wall like a regular one does. The Apple genius was wrong. Those people seem good with current gear, but are commonly weak on older equipment made before they had to use underarm deodorant daily.
Original Apple adaptors are sky-high in price:
    M8661LL
I recall there being third-party adapter like Dr Bott but they are also discontinued and scarce. I looked for one about two years ago and they were already around US$100.
For $100 you can get a nice flat-panel monitor and, for $150 you can get a really nice FP monitor.
I am an advocate for keeping old technology in service and out of the landfill, but ADC has to be scored as an Apple failure in the long run.
EDIT: Forgot your monitor was probably newer than the pre-1998 equipment this forum served. You may want to look through this part of the forums where older displays are discussed:
    Older Displays & Monitors
to see it there are any better workabouts.

  • ADC OR DVI or DVI-I?

    Hello,
Decisions, decisions, decisions!! Got a PM G4 MDD 1.25 Dual w/2MB L3 cache per processor. Undecided on what to do as far as monitor is concerned. Currently, connected to a big, heavy kahuna 19 inch sony CRT monitor. Want to get rid of it for an LCD. Should I go with ADC? or DVI? Or something new called: DVI-I? Help!
I am not looking to spend a whole lot of money for such a device, but was told to stay clear of the Apple LCD monitors compared to other companies.
Well, what does everyone have to recommend to me? ADC or DVI?

I bought a ViewSonic 22" wide aspect ration flat panel for my G4 MDD with stock Radeon 9000 vidcard. The monitor has both VGA and DVI ports and came with a cable for each. The R900 has one DVI and one ADC port.
I've tried both VGA and DVI and found I get a better selections of usable resolutions with the monitor's VGA port and cable (using the DVI-to-VGA adaptor that came with the MDD). Although the native res for the monitor is 1680x1050, I run it at 1440x900 (VGA) in deference to my aging eyeballs. If I use the monitor's DVI port and cable, only 1680x1050 is supported without distortion. Every other res offered in DVI mode looks stretched even with only the Finder running.
