Add a new POP email acct to iPad

I am trying to add a new POP account to y husband's iPad 3rd generation, IOS 6. It creates as an IMAP account, which AT&T / sbcglobal.net does not support.
I thought there used to be a toggle or selection for POP or IMAP when I have done this in the past.  I don't see that now.
My sbc account on my iPhone & iPad is POP, as is his sbc acct on his iPhone.

I was able to resolve this, perhaps sharing how will help someone.
I got a tip from another thread (unfortunately, I did not save the reference or link) which said to intentionally build the account with a bogus email account name.
That actually worked, because when I entered the bogus account name, it could not verify the name with sbcglobal.net, and an option to choose IMAP or POP appeared across the top of the screen on the iPhone.  I chose POP, input the correct email account name, and was able to set it up with no further difficulties.
A bit strange and certainly less than intuitive... but it works.

    How are you trying to do it ? You can change the rescue email address on your account by, from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312 :
    Navigate to appleid.apple.com using your web browser.
    Click "Manage your account"
    When prompted, sign in using your Apple ID and password.
    Click Password & Security
    You'll be asked to answer 2 of your 3 security questions before you can make any modifications. If you are unable to remember your answers, you can choose to send an email to your rescue email to reset your security questions.
    After you've validated your identity by correctly answering your security questions, click Edit to the right of your rescue email address.
    Once you've finished editing your rescue email address, click the Save button directly below the email field.
    You can then try using your current rescue email address as your primary email address - you may need to log out of that page and back in. Or you can then try changing the primary email address via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes
    If you have an iPhone, iPad and/or iPod Touch you may then need to log out of your account on them by tapping on it in Settings > iTunes & App Store and log back in for the account to be 'refreshed' on it.

    You should not need to enter anything. the iCloud service is one of the  preconfigured options.
    Just choose the iCloud type from the Add new Mail screen, and enter your details in the next screen.
    If you don't have the iCloud option, but instead have the mobileMe option then you will need to update your iOS.

    My existing accounts upgraded and are working fine, but I can't add any new POP account or Exchange account since the upgrade.
    Mail won't save the password for the new account in any of the preference settings. When I finish the set-up Mail keeps asking me to type in my password. When I do it keeps giving me a message saying the password was rejected by the server.
    I repaired keychain access and deleted any keychains associated with the new account I was trying to add. Didn't help. I had my ISP open port 25 while on the phone with them. Didn't work. I've gone into the Advanced Tab and edit server list and tried every setting possible. Tried with authentication and without. I've tried it from a new desktop and from the one where my existing accounts are. I've tried turning the new account which is working on my iphone off and then adding it to Mail. No luck.
    I don't know code. Any other work around suggestions?

    I can't add the new account to even get to the point where I could send or receive. I go through the entire set up but the account never goes online. Once i have it all set up is where I started playing around with the port settings, etc. Still have never been able to get it online. The account works fine on my iphone. An account with the same isp provider that was already working in Mail before SL is working fine. I upgraded a new imac that I bought in July and a 3 year old one. Same problem on both. Can't add a new POP AT&T Yahoo account or an Exchange account to Mail 4.0. I've read other threads and tried several different trouble shooting suggestions. I repaired the keychain. I've deleted the passowrd from keychain and tried re-entering them. The password never saves in the Mail preferences for the new account I am trying to add. At the same time every time I am prompted to type in the password it tell me the password is rejected. I tried changing the username like you mentioned. Tried just the user name alone and with the extension "@att.net". Didn't help.
    Any other ideas?

    You must upgrade your OSX to Lion (10.7) minimum, Mavericks (10.9) preferably.

    i chage my internet provider and therefore email address. i deleted my old email address from my ipad and now i am not able to email from new email address nor will i cloud recongnize my new email address which is my apple id now.  since i deleted my old email acct   the cloud is not allowing me to chg this address in settting.  the cloud still has my old email address listed.

    How do I add a new me.com email address?  With mobileme it seemed like you could add up to 5 email addresses but not quite sure how it works now with icloud.

    With iCloud, you only get one address per iCloud account.  You can create up to 3 alias adress names, but these still receive email to the same inbox (see http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2622).  If you already have a @me address, you should have been assigned a @icloud address too.  This operates like an alias address, but does not count toward your total of 3.
    Also, new iCloud accounts only receive @icloud addresses; @me (and @mac) addresses are no longer available.

    I set up iCloud email OK on my new iPad 2. I did not previously have a MobileMe account. When the email stopped working (I got repeated messages to say server unavailable) I followed Apple instructions to delete the account from the iPad with the intention of re-adding it.
    When I try to do this, it always wants to make me create a new @me.com email address, and I can't find a way to tell it my existing one. If I try to add my existing address, it tells me that it is taken and I have to choose another (of course it's taken, it's mine!)
    I can login to anything that requires an Apple ID (iTunes Store, Apple ID pages, iCloud.com etc.) with either my actual Apple ID or my existing @me.com email address and all the features on iCloud.com except Mail work fine, including Locate my iPad, Documents, Contacts, Calendar. The email address is also set up manually in Mail on my MacMini (OS 10.6.8) and still works from there. I don't wish to upgrade to 10.7 because I have some programs that won't work on that.

    I have solved this - partially. I deleted the iCloud account from my iPad, rebooted it, then re-added it using my @me.com address as my AppleID instead of my primary AppleID. These are still linked to one another.
    The iPad still says it cannot contact the iCloud server, so in the Advanced pane of the Mail settings, Outgoing Mail Server, I have allowed it to use the outgoing server of another email address of mine.
