Add a program to Open With

How would I go about adding a program to Bridge's Open With command.  I find that my workflow goes better with Photoshop 7 on the majority of my projects.  This has to do with what I do so please don't ask why I don't use PS CS4. <grin><br /><br />If I click on a thumbnail using the right mouse button one of the submenus is Open With and all of the choices are CS4 programs.  I want to add my Photoshop 7 to it.  I should be able to as Corel PhotoPaint is one of the choices as well.<br /><br />Thanks in Advance.

Wayne,
I have just overcome exactly the problem you are describing. I wanted to add Capture NX2 to the list of programs displayed by Adobe Bridge CS2 when I clicked the "Open with" option. By the way, I'm using Windows XP.
As you have discovered, there seems no way to do it.
It seemed to nme that the list of programs displayed was the list of JPG capable programs at the time Adobe CS2 was installed - and the program I want added to the list wasn't installed at that time.
So I decided to re-install Adobe CS2. But when I went to uninstall before re-instaling, I was presented with the option of "repair" or remove. "Repair" sounded like a good option, so I tried it. It worked! It did something like a re-install, and it certainly found and added the program I wanted on the "Open with" list.
Hope it works for you.

  • Can you add Programs to Open With Menu

Is there a way to add programs to the Open With Menu.  For example, when you right click on a file you can choose to open it with the default application by selecting Open, or choose other programs to open it with by selecting Open With.  Only a few of the programs that can open the files are listed.  Is there a way to add programs that I use to list in that list.  Right now, everytime I want to open something in a program that is not listed I have to go to Other... and find it in the Application folder.  Which is not too convenient.  Many programs that I use to open files are not listed for many types of file types, I open them frequently using the Open... window, and I was hoping that Mac would learn to add them, but it did not.
For example, I have VMWare with Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 in it, my default application for WORD documents is Word for Mac 2011, but occasionally I need to open it in Word 2010 in Windows (Certain features that are missing in Mac Word), and I have to browse to fin the Word 2010 Application from the Application Folder.  Another example is a program (from the App Store) called ResizeIt (which resizes photos), I have to browse for it everytime even though it is an application just for images.
So, is there a way to edit the Open With Menu for specific file types to include these programs that I use, or do I have to keep browsing to the Application folder and finding it there?
    Thank you in advance!!

  • [SOLVED] Firefox: How can I always show a program to open with?

When downloading files, there are the Open With and Save As options. On Ubuntu, the Open With option had the default program for opening the specified kind of file in the drop-down and the Browse option to find a program to open it with. On Arch I just have the Browse option. Is there a way I can add certain programs to this drop-down? I am aware that you can set Firefox to always open certain kinds of files with a certain program, but that does not give me the option to choose to open or download, it just always opens.

You need a ~/.mailcap file. If you don't have a .mailcap, it looks in /etc/mailcap. It'll look something like this:
    application/msword;/usr/bin/ooowriter %s
    application/pdf;/usr/bin/epdfview %s
So first you list the mime-type, and then the associated program after a semicolon. %s represents the file to be passed on.
    ---Edit---
You don't need the /usr/bin/ part if it's in your $PATH.
Alternatively, you can edit mimeTypes.rdf in your firefox profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/MimeTypes.rdf

  • Add TextEdit in submenu "Open with"

Hello, I have *.cue files and by default they are opened with XLD.
I sometimes want to edit the cue files with TextEdit but when I go to "Open with", TextEdit doesn't appear in the submenu.
I was wondering if there is a way to add TextEdit to the submenu list like the others app.

  • Multiple copies of programs in "Open with"

On files of various types, when I choose the "Open With" option (on a right-click) I find I have multiple copies of programs available to choose from. For example, "Open With" on a .gif gives me the choice between 3 copies of Firefox, 2copes of ImageWell, 3 copies of Paintbrush, etc. Clicking on another .gif (in the same folder) gives only 2 copies of Firefox but 3 of ImageWell. Both ave many more programs available to choose from, but you get the idea. versions appear to be identical (i.e. the ImageWell choice is "Imagwell (3.2.2)" three times).
    What's going on?

    Hi
The best way to clear this is by rebuilding the Launch Services database.
Open the Terminal (from /Applications/Utilities) and copy and paste the following into the Terminal window followed by a return:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Note the command is all one line.
If you don't want to use Terminal, you could try this Clearing the Finder "Open With" contextual menu which might work for you.

  • Ability to add multiple apps to Open With file associations

It would be extremely helpful if Bridge's "file association" dialog allowed one to associate multiple applications with a file type, so the Open With function worked like Lightroom's Edit In function which allows the use of multiple external editors.  As it is currently designed, only one new "default" association can be changed/added.   A current list of other available "editors" also appears in the Open With context menu, but it is unclear (at least to me) where that list comes from because there are some pretty strange entries in the list for any specific file type.
    Thanks

Agreed -- I've always been curious as to what random generator Bridge uses to assign programs with file types.

  • How to remove programs from "open with".

Recently I installed VM Fusion on my new MBP with SnowLeopard. The annoying issue is that when I right click on a file from SL and select "open with" I get a long list with windows programs that I don't intend to use. Is there a way to remove those programs when I select "open with". Thank you

no, there isn't. this list is generated by the launch services database and you can't control it manually.

  • Duplicate programs in "Open With" menu

How can I clean up the menu that shows when I right click and choose "Open With". I have duplicate programs (for example VLC shows twice). Any way to fix this?

Try rebuilding your launch services database.
    run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

  • Changing program to Open With

I want to open my media (avi, mpg) with VLC instead of quicktime. What do I have to do to make it so certain file types open with a certain program? Right clicking and clicking "Open With" only affects that particular file, but not that file type. Thanks!

Thanks. You'd think that this option would be found under "Open With"
Your advice worked, except that the icons still show Quicktime (but use VLC when double clicked). I closed and reopened finder, but it didn't refresh. Oh well. Thanks!

  • Seeing Double! Double Programs on Open With Menu!

Ok, when I CTRL + CLick on a program and hit Open With... it has the same program listed twice! How do I Get rid of it?

I tried one of the suggested Terminal scripts and it worked perfectly! Some had reported the 'generic' icon problem, but that was always fixed with a reboot. I had no such problems and the duplicates were erased in both the 'control-click' area and the Get Info selections. Not even a log out required with the following Terminal commands, at least for me.
NOTE: Copy and paste the following into a text editor and remove the "REMOVE" before pasting into Terminal:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/REMOVE
    Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/REMOVE
Support/lsregister -kill -r -f -domain local -domain system -domain user "/Applications"
Note that the command basically tells the System to stop updating the cache and rebuilt it. This takes a few seconds ( about 45 on my set up ). Just be patient and wait for the input cursor to reappear.
Thanks for the OSXHints link! Merry Christmas, just hope you can now "Open with fingers/hands" come the 25th!

  • QuickTime 7 Adds a %1 to Open With Menu Windows 8.1

The %1 is on .png, .jpg, .bmp .psd photo file types so most photo file types in Windows 8.1 open with list with the exception of .gif file type that has a correct QuickTime photo viewer icon and label.
Uninstalling QuickTime 7 makes that %1 go away.

I also had this problem recently, the solution works but when you reinstall QuickTime, it still comes back.

  • How do we add apps to the 'Open With' contextual menu?

After I updated to Mavericks, all of the apps, except the Apple ones, were blown away (eg. Word and Excel in my VM).
How do I put them back?

'Open With > Other' would not show the apps in my VM.  I tried.
I tried something different.  I left Word open in my Parallels (Vista) VM and ignored it for a while to see if Maverics would pick it up eventually.
    It did.
It seems like that it takes some time for Maverics to find the apps in a VM before we can use it in the 'Open With' menu.
