Add an internal SCSI HD to G3 MT

Hi everybody,
Your advice again please. I obtained a used Quantum Viking 3.5 series 68-pin internal HD. Can it be installed in my G3 MT as a second HD? I suppose a cable with appropriate connector (& terminator?) is needed. What are the set-up procedures and to what should I pay special attention?
Can the same HD be installed in my G4 AGP? Many thanks.
Henry

Ultra 2 SCSI drive FAQ
http://www.transintl.com/technotes/macupgfaq.htm
"my Gossamer G3 300 MT there was an onboard SCSI bus that was shared with the external DB-25 SCSI port at the rear. I thus wonder if I could connect the Quantum drive to the G3 motherboard via a 50-pin cable (I got a 68 to 50 adapter at home for the HD)."
Short answer, Yes it will work fine. It will even work in a 6100/7100/8100 or a Quadra series computer. If you buy a PCI SCSI controller card, you can get faster performance but that is more money when you are ready.
"Structurally I know it is possible but am just concerned that G3 would not accept this extra HD internally. "
You are correct. It can be done with the adapter. In fact, if you place the adapter into the onboard connector, you can then have a 68 pin cable run to all new drives. You must be running an IDE drive in your MT now. The computer will accept the drive just fine. Finding a 68 pin ribbon cable with a terminator attached would be the best solution. A recycler in Seattle sells them with a terminator for less than $5 US. Hong Kong will have similar options available to you. My son found that adapter in a small shop in Tokyo. Easy to find.
"Today the G3 refused to boot up after the 'gong' sound, after I had opened up the case to look at the internal architecture. I had to disconnect the USB card, extra CD drive, reduce the RAM to 128MB, change the PRAM battery, reset the CUDA button and zap the PRAM etc to bring it back to life. "
I think that a 'warm boot' (using a keyboard command to restart after the 'gong sound' or startup chime) should have been your first step to avoid all the other disruption to the system. Less effort is sometimes more effective.
"Would the addition of the SCSI drive disturb the harmony of my existing system? I want to have a second physical HD in G3 to house the OS 9.2.2."
Short answer, no disturbance. In my first post, I assumed the possibility of an existing SCSI HDD in your MT. Since you do not have the SCSI card that was included with G3 servers, the drive you have now is IDE. It is on a different controller. Therefor, you do not have to worry about ID conflicts until you add a third drive. If you can find those drives for about $5 US then you can add several more economically on the 68 pin ribbon I suggested earlier. You will have slower performance until you buy a faster controller card but all other parts will work with a new card if you find one.
"My G4 AGP does not have an onboard SCSI bus and therefore is out of question. Thanks again for your advice."
If you do some careful shopping, you can find a PCI SCSI controller card that will fit in your G4 and the G3. Grant suggested one last year and my son bought two for $25 apiece. If you can find a computer recycler, they might have one in an old tower for $10. Someone posted that they found a G3 in London for 10 Pounds UK So I know others are finding good deals. Watch for parts still in used computers and the upgrade will not be out of the question.
Good luck,
Ji˜m
By the way, May 16, 2006 8:01 AM - a year ago, Mack Wong from Hong Kong posted with a similar request for help installing a 68 pin drive in his 6100. He found the adapter and cable and the drive worked just fine for him. You have plenty of options available to you in Hong Kong.

  • Can I add an internal hard drive to my iMac G4?

My HD only has about 5GB left out of 80, and I know that's not good. If I can't add an internal, can I swap the hard drive for a new larger one myself?

If you follow a good take-apart guide you can have the job done in a few hours. I replaced both drives on my old G4 w/ this guide:

  • How to add an internal link on pages 5.0.1?

Could anyone please tell me how to add an internal link on pages 5.0.1.
I am making FAQ list, and I would like to make the first page of the document as a list of questions and when a user click on each question, it jumps to the answer (in the same document).
I found "Add link" tool but it allows you to jump URL or email only.
I was able to  set the list of questions as an index page of "Table of contents" tool and jump to a question page by clicking each page number, however, it fails when I put a question in a table (I would like to place each question and answer in tables for a visual purpose).
It seems a jump by using "Table of contents" become invalid when the contents are placed in a chart.  WHy?
Are there any way to solve this problem?
    any advise will be appreciated.

  • Added a 2nd internal SCSI drive into my 7500/100 does not show up.

    Hi.
I added a 2nd internal SCSI drive into my 7500/100. It does not show up on the desk top. I rebuild the desktop reset the cuda and ran SCSIProbe. The computer starts up on the newly added drive. No sign from the original drive. Please help.
    Walter

there are jumpers on the drives that need to be properly set. Both drives are set with the terminating resistor on, one needs to be off. Carefully note nthe placement of the existing jumpers then remove the jumper from the drive in the middle connector.

  • Error while trying to add an internal leaf

    Hi Experts,
I am facing a problem while trying to add an internal leaf to an inner node in a hierarchy table.
Whenever I am trying to do so , I am getting an error message that
'One or more records failed a validation'.
I am not getting any clue why this is happening. Can any one provide me some idea to solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Samrat

    Hi SAMRAT,
'One or more records failed a validation' - This statement points out that there is an MDM validation failure in the records.
You need to check for any validations for the Hierarchy table or the Hierarchy lookup filed in the Main table.
There should be a Validation that is running on the Hierarchy value/Node and preventing you from creating a node.
Setting the validation as None will not execute the validation on its on .
    Hope It Helped

  • Quadra 800 and internal SCSI drive

Could somebody advise me whether I can replace the second internal SCSI drive in Quadra 800 (MacOS 7.5) with something bigger and newer? I have a new Seagate Cheetah 73Gb internal SCSI drive (68-pin). Is there any way to use it in the Quadra? Is there any adapter that could be used for that?

    Yes, but.
The largest Volume supported on that Mac, provided you are running 7.5 or later, is 4 GB. So you would have to create about 19 partitions (Volumes) to use all the 73 GB. The full story is in this article about Standard Format -- Extended Format requires OS 8.1 or later:
8647- Macintosh: \[Standard] File System Specifications and Terms
    Volume
A volume is either a full disk, or a section of a disk, partitioned into separate parts. If you partition a single drive then each partition is considered a volume.
The maximum volume size under System 6 and System 7 is 2 GB. System 7.5 increased that limit to 4 GB and System 7.5.2 (and later) increases that limit to 2 TB on some computers, including:
    - any computer that came with System 7.5.2 or newer. \[your Quadra 800came with 7.1 and an enabler]
    - any Macintosh computer with PCI slots.
That 68-pin drive likely could use wide transfers and much higher speeds, but can be made backward compatible through careful use of adapters. Alternatiively, you could install a NuBus card to connect to it directly.

Not in the way you probably envision. Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
See Page 50. Unlike the Envy 17 and Pavilion dv7, the Pavilion 17 has only one hard drive bay. The only way to add a second hard drive is to remove the DVD (optical drive) and insert a DVD bay hard drive adapter. The Manual shows how to remove the DVD drive and you can buy the adapter at amazon.com or from jacobsparts.com. Note it is a 9.5 mm thick drive, not a 12.7 mm. Both types are available. I do not recommend the DVD drive adapter solution because you lose the use of the optical drive and also because the optical drive interface is usually not as fast as the main hard drive interface. Still fast enough for simple storage and you can run a video from it but you would not want to edit video from that drive, for example.
    https://www.jacobsparts.com/items/HDDBAY-02/
If you do decide to go the DVD adapter route I would buy a large capacity 5400 rpm SATA 2.5 inch wide and 9.5 mm thick hard drive. No sense in buying a more expensive high performance drive.

Now there is request for the same VPN remote access to be able to ping access a new server inside LAN, 172.57.1.10 & 172.57.1.20
But with the same VPN access, i was unable to ping both new IP.
How can i add in the both IP to be able to ping using the same remote access VPN config?

The remote access VPN should allow the connection but I am guessing your ASA doesn't know how to route to the two new destinations.
You have a name and static route for the working server at 172.47.1.10:
name 172.47.1.10 NarayaServer description Naraya Server
    route inside NarayaServer 255.255.255.255 172.27.17.100 1
..but no equivalent for the two new hosts. As a result, any traffic from the ASA destined for them will attempt to use the default route (via the outside interface).
    If you add:
    route inside 172.57.1.10 255.255.255.255 172.27.17.100
    route inside 172.57.1.20 255.255.255.255 172.27.17.100
(assuming that's your correct gateway), it should work.

  • Internal scsi drives on mac pro?

I have just received my Mac Pro, which will soon be put into use as the center of a commercial audio recording facility. I was under the impression that the SCSI drives I had been using in my aging MDD dual 1 GHZ would be port-able to the new box. But, after snooping around a little bit on the boards here, and looking into the machine itself, this appears not to be possible.
Is it true that ONLY SATA drives are compatible as internal drives in the new Macs?
If so, then I need to sort out my new drive configuration for the studio machine. For better or worse, my studio uses ProTools, which does not support RAID of any sort. So I'm left looking at sharing the internal SATA bus with the system drive, going with an external FW800 drive, or investing in an external SCSI drive (ugh).
    Any thoughts would be welcome.
    Thanks,
    Nick
    mp 8-core 3ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   8gb RAM

following up on this thread -
I purchased the external chassis recommended above and have compared transfer rates with the somewhat unscientific copy time test, from the desktop of the apple SATA boot drive to and between various other drives. It appears that the internal SATA 7200RPM drive I bought from OWC is outperforming the external (10000RPM) SCSI drives I have mounted in the enclosure. This seems odd to me. I'm not sure if the bus speed is being ratcheted down to accommodate the cabling (SCSI 3) or what. I appear to be getting roughly one third of the 160MB/S limit on the Ultra160 drive (the buffer size is 8MB on this drive as opposed to 16MB on the 7200 drive).
Theoretically, the bus throughput is higher on the SATA bus, but I thought that would be outweighed by the drive performance - that appears not to be true. It also appears that the SATA drive is FASTER on the duplication process than the SCSI drive, which leads me to believe that the rotation speed is being trumped by something else - buffer size perhaps?
Any thoughts would be welcome. Here are the results of my testing.
    Copying 1.27GB .zip archive:
desktop to 2nd internal SATA drive: 19 seconds (68MB/S or .53Gb/S)
desktop to external SCSI drive: 25 seconds (52MB/S)
2nd internal SATA to desktop: 19 seconds (68MB/S)
Duplicating 1.27GB .zip archive on the same drive:
    internal SATA: 50 seconds
external SCSI drive #2: 58 seconds

  • Intel iMac: Wanting to add more internal HDD & More RAM

Well i'm interested but it seems opening my iMac is a bit scary :/ Also i have no idea IF there is room inside for more add ons. Maybe the HDD might have to be external but the RAM i need.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, as maybe you've done this yourself before? Would be much appreciated!

    Hi Matt
The early white Intel iMac's are one of the hardest models to work on and it is real easy to damage other components and cables in the process. If your Internal HD is working fine, it might be best to let it be and pickup a USB/FireWire or Quad Interface External HD.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/800/
Ram is user upgradeable and can be accessed under the center cover on the bottom of the iMac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1432
The maximum amount of ram you can install in the Late 2006 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo is 2 matching 2GB modules, but that system only supports 3GB and can not be upgraded to use more.

  • What's necessary to add an internal hard drive?

I just got my used G5 dual 1.8 yesterday (which seems to work great compared to my emac) and am planning on adding a second 250G hard drive. Will the same 7200 rpm sata drives they sell everywhere for pcs work in the mac? Do I need to get any special cables or connectors??

Thanks to everybody for your help. I bought a WD 320G SATA 300 drive at Sam's Club for $110 and installed it last night. It works great.
I have a giant video project file I've been working on for over a year and a half now and it would take 11 minutes to open up in Final Cut on my G4 1.25 GHZ Emac with 1G Ram.
As soon as I got my preesent G5 Power Mac dual 1.8 GHZ with 1.5G Ram, the 11 minute speed dropped to 6 minutes (with all my media and render files on an extrenal Firewrie 400 drive. After installing the internal drive ast night and transferring all project files to it, the opening speed of the same project dropped to 4 minutes.
And, of course, the speed of just working on the project is vastly improved.
    Thanks to all.
p.s. I just ordered 2 more G of ram to add to the 1.5 I have and will report if that improves things any.

  • How can I add document-internal links in Pages 5?

I have a number of very large dicttionary documents (300+ pages) all of which have internal links. The internal links allow you to jump from one letter to another, so that, for example, if you're looking at words that begin with S, you can go to the A-Z letterboard at the beginning and end of the S section and immediately jump to any other section. I've also got links in the middle of the document leading to parts in the front matter (so, for example, a mention of the word "relative clause" will be linked to a section in the grammar discussing relative clauses). The nice thing is that these links would remain active when exported to .pdf, so when I shared them with others, the internal links continued to function. Each document has hundreds of these internal links. All of them appear to have been broken by the new version of Pages.
Is there a way to create document internal links like the ones I used to use for Pages '09, or has this functionality been forever removed from Pages? If the latter, who do I scream at?

Bookmarks have been removed along with 100 other features.
You could post at Menu > Pages > Provide Pages Feedback but that is pointless in my experience
Instead rate/review Pages 5 in the App Store where everyone can see it. In our local App Store, Pages 5.1 is back down to 2 stars with again 61% of users saying they hate it.
Pages '09 should be in your Applications/iWork folder, use that instead.

  • How do I add additional internal hard drives to Pavilion h8-1217c running Windows 7 Home Premium

I am stymied in my effort to utilize two recently wiped and formatted Hitachi Deskstar 500 GB SATA drives I inherited from my previous HP desktop. I have installed them in my aforementioned unit, and find that the BIOS apparently accurately identifies them, but I cannot see them in Windows. Instead, in Disk Management, a disk with twice the capacity is listed, and the system does not allow me to initialize the drives, an apparent step necessary before they can be assigned a drive letter and utilized. Upon selecting to initialize, the Disk Management program of Windows presents an Virtual Disk Manager error message saying "The system cannot find the file specified," a message the specificity of which is slightly wanting. Huh? What system? Windows? The drive? Help? BTW, this particular frustration is well documented among a number of users on the internet. Why has no answer been provided yet?

Don't know what you mean about a link indicating this is an issue with the HP Pavilion h8-1217c...I posted that it is a general issue with a number of computers, many of them HP, wherein the error message I earlier cited came up. To answer your particular subsequent query, in Storage Options in my BIOS, it states that the SATA Emulation is AHCPI, not IDE...a setting I believe is appropriate in this case, since, as I had stated previously (I often find that I have stated, and clearly, previously) that the two additional drives I have installed in this box are Hitachi Deskstar 500GB SATA drives from a previous HP system. Both drives were wiped and reformatted by a local computer shop that was delighted to charge me $60 for that particular piece of heavy lifting, defending their bill by suggesting they woudl have to update the firmware as a matter of course. Upon getting the drives, they freely confessed that, of course, it was NOT necessary to upgrade firmware. I di-grease! To reiterate, both drives are recognized by the BIOS, with their appropriate ser no listed. It is in Windows 7 where the problem seems to crop up. Of course, as a Windows 7 issue, HP is supposed to support it. An earlier post in this forum...a reply to me...gave me a link to instructions on how to disengage the cage that holds the drives. I have, indicated by my posts, moved WELL beyond that point. Is anyone familiar with my issue...again, it is this...with the above stated conditions, when in Disk Management in Windows, with the drives recognized in Device Manager as one drive listed as "Volume_000," I am faced with an immediate pop up box telling me to initialize the drive, either as MBR or GPT. I chose MBR, though it matters not which I choose, since upon clicking OK, another popup box identified as "Virtual Disk Manager" tells me that "The system cannot find the file specified."
This delightful cul de sac is frequently cited on the internet, with no clear answer as to a resolution anywhere that I could find. Can someone help with this. This ought not to be so difficult, nor should HP be sending me around the bend, making ludicrous statements like "you should not be adding internal drives to your computer" or "we cannot cover this issue unless you pay a fee!" A FEE!! I just bought this system within the last three months. I have purchased several desktop and laptop systems and their accessories from this computer giant in the last 7 years! Do they give a flying-you-know-what about their customers?

  • Can i add an internal hard disk in Satellite A300-20P

Satellite a300 20p has 2 places for hard disk
Can i add another one beside the existing one?

    Hi
    You can check it yourself.
There should be an second HDD bay.
Remove the cover from the second HDD bay and check if there is an HDD connector (pin).
If you will not find any connectors then this would mean that an second HDD controller is not available and the usage of 2nd HDD is not possible.
    Cheers
