  • Add buddy does not appear on the list

I have a grandson in Iraq. On occasion we get to iChat with him. Why doesn't his name come up on iChat AIM Buddy list when I "Add Buddy" shouldn't the added buddy appear on the list dimmed if offline? This is the only one I have had trouble with. He does appear on my Mac mini computer downstairs, but I for some reason cannot add him to the list on my iMac.

    Hi,
I am not entirely sure I completely followed all of that.
You can set two computers to have the same Screen Name and allow them to Log in to the AIM servers at the same time.
The Bonjour Buddy List takes the name from the Address Book so you can not login in to both computers as Gregory Lazarchik as the Mac User on Both (If that is how your Name is in the Address Book).
Going back to the AIM (Apple valid as well) Name. Once both computers are logged in with the Same Screen Name you can not appear in each others Buddy List (iChat does not allow you to Add yourself to the Buddy List)
This used to be possible in iChat 2 and you could text chat to "yourself"
AS I said before the other Issues are about the settings in iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security about Allow and Block lists (At BOTH ends) that make people appear Off-line over AIM - Well that and Spelling of the Screen Name or adding them as @mac.com when they should be @me.com or an AIM name
    Using my name for example
    ralphjounsr
    [email protected] and
[email protected] are three different Buddies
As only one of those is correct you would see the others as Off-Line because the AIM Servers don't tell you if the name is a valid (in use) name.
I am glad that you are sorted on this.

  • Can not add buddy

ok let me explain this again.. I am not able to add buddy,
I get into Ichat, click on the buddy tab that drops down several options (add buddy, change my picture, invite buddy to chat etc..) everything on this pull down menu is in light grey except .. change my picture.. in other words.. I can not access those options.. I can only access the change my picture option. I though ICHAT was easy to use.. we can not figure this out!

    Hi Billy,
If you don't remember the Set Up Screens (Pics here) or clicked through the screens with out adding anything you will need to set up either an AIM account or .mac account name. (see link above)
After that you will need to Add Buddies
Once you have Buddies in the Buddy list you will be able to Text chat to them at least depending on how you have set up your modem for iChat.
If you can not see the Buddy List Window use the Apple key and 1 together (Apple and 2 for Bonjour Apple and 3 for Jabber).

  • Can't add Buddy

When I try to add a buddy, the name stays on my list for about five seconds, then it just disappears, like I removed it...
anyone know what could be causing this?
    thanks

Nevermind my last post. The problem is back again, it only works temporary, at least for me, I'm not sure if these other people have come to notice the problem was back, just have not noticed or actually is still working but I am not restarting my system every time to fix this problem since I use the sleep feature constantly. Also, I do not feel like changing the settings in iChat every time and so on.
@ManchesterCA, the files are located under your Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences. (/users/your-username/Library/Preferences). Then try the suggested fix.
If you and others that have tried the "fix" could post back on your experience, if it still works for you or not, that'd be appreciated. I had it working for awhile, quit iChat and put my mac to sleep and came back later and the problem was back again.
I know it's a for sure problem with iChat. There are no problems with Adium (latest version) as well as ALL Windows versions of AIM.

  • Can't add buddy to list

I just bought a new Macbook, my friend has an older macbook. When I try to add her to my buddy list (which was from my AIM) she pops up...then is gone. I also cannot not do a video chat with her. What should I do?

I, too, am having these problems. I took some advice from another forum about deleting com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist as well as another .plist (something to do with agent??) file from Library/Preferences. Now, ichat is completely unusable! (I did try getting these out of my trash, but I accidently emptied the trash - doh).
I just found some info on re-installing ichat... I might try that out. It would be nice for apple to fix this bug though.
Here are the re-install instructions if anyone is looking for them, although, after the advice I took from the last forum, I'm a little skeptical to even try this!
Put in your install disk 1(the disk that came with your mac) then after the disk has opened double click on "Optional installs" then double click on the "Optional installs.mpkg".
Then when you get to "Custom install......." click on the triangle by appications and then tick iChat and then continue with the install.
When done download and install the 10.5.5 combo to bring iChat back up to date.

  • Feedbag error-10 after attempt to add buddy

Dear all, my dad is getting a peculiar error message when trying to add a buddy. iChat will report feedbag error 10 and buddy is not added. As far as I can tell he is not doing anything wrong. Anybody had same error?

  • What do you do when there isn't an "Add a buddy" button?

My iChat doesn't have an add a buddy button, and under the "Buddies" Tab the "add a buddy" option isn't a link.

    Hi,
When you start iChat for the first time you get a set of Start Up Screens.
You can Add an AIM valid Name at first then Enable Bonjour then Add  a Jabber ID at later Screens.
It is possible to click through those Start Up screen and not Enter an AIM Valid Name or a Jabber one and have Bonjour only Enabled.
This means that in iChat > Preferences > Accounts you will only see the Bonjour account (It is in fact always there even if not enabled)  but the Account info tab on the right will have "Use this Account"  ticked in the check box.
Bonjour is the method your Mac connects to other Macs on your LAN.
Those that have iChat ON will show up in your Bonjour Buddy List (It uses their Address Book My Card info - they see your Address Book My Card "Real Name")
If there are no other Macs on your LAN (with iChat Active with the Bonjour Bit Enabled) then you will see no Buddies in the List.
As Defcom implies it has no Add Buddy + button.
Does this sound like where you are up to right now ?

  • I Cannot Add Buddies in iChat 4 and 5 - How do I fix this ?

I Cannot Add Buddies in iChat 4 and 5
Many people are reporting that they cannot add Buddies to either iChat 4 or iChat 5.
The Symptoms are that the Buddy appears in the Buddy List and then does the "Brightening/Fading" cycle but fails to be anywhere in the list including Off Line Buddies.
To Show Off Line Buddies, highlight the Buddy list to bring to the "front".
Then go to the View Menu and Enable Show Off Line Buddies.
(there is also an Option to display these in a separate Group).
There can be many causes and I will attempt to deal with then in the order that they are most likely.
    A) The Contact is already in the Address Book.
When Adding a Buddy via the use of the + Sign at the Bottom of the Buddy List (Then Add Buddy) or invoking it from the Buddies menu a drop down appears to slide down out of the Buddy List Header area
In this slide out/drop down, you get the chance to Add the Screen Name and then the First Name Last Name details of the Buddy.
iChat checks the Address Book and if the First Name, Last Name items do not match any contact in the Address Book already then the Buddy will be added to the Buddy list.
As the Address Book does not allow two contacts to have the same name they will not be added to the iChat Buddy List if the name exists already.
In iChat 3 and earlier there was an Error Message that popped up saying there was Feedbag Error
    See here for More
Note: AIM Protocols call Lists "Feedbags". Contents (Buddies) are "Food" and of course Food is kept in Feedbags.
The Address Book is one Feedbag in this case and the Screen Name (only) Buddy List held on the AIM Server is the other.
The Software puts the two together for Display purposes
    The Fix.
    Either:
    1) Add them as Screen Name only
    2) Use the Arrow head at the end of the Last Name line to open the Address Book and pick the Contact.
    3) Open the Address Book and Edit their Card to Add the Screen Name, then drag them from the Name column to the iChat Buddy List.
    4) During any type of Chat use the item in the Buddies Menu to Add the person (it will display their Screen Name in Dark text if not in the Buddy List - Then item 2 can also be used)
    B) Parental Controls
There are similar Symptoms if the Mac User Account is subject to Parental Controls.
If the Mac User Account on the computer is not an Admin account it is a Standard or Managed one
A Managed one has Parental Controls Enabled.
There is a Tab for Mail and iChat.
If it is turned on for iChat then all buddies are Blocked initially (in iChat 4 Jabber and Bonjour Buddy List cannot be used.)
Adding AIM valid Screen Names (AIM, Those with either @mac.com or @me.com endings) to the allow List Unblocks those Buddies and they will show in the Buddy List as On or Off line
    The Fix.
In this case if you are the Managed account you have to get the Admin account to add the Buddy to the Buddy allowed list in Parental Controls.
    Exception
There is a very large exception.
Due to the fact that the way Parental Controls blocks names until they appear in the Allow List there can be a problem if testing the same iChat Details in a Test Account.
Lets say you are the Admin User on the Mac.
You set up a second Mac User Account called Test.
In this you set up iChat with the same details (Screen name) you use in your Main Mac User Account.
You then test Parental Controls by turning it On and setting the iChat Limit option.
Then you add to the allow List one or two AIM valid names.
You check iChat and find they are the only Buddies that show up.
It works, so you return to your main Mac User Account and discover that most of your Buddies are missing.
On checking the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts > Security Tab you find the Allow Specific People option is Enabled and the list only includes those Buddies you set in Parental Controls.
Choosing allow All does not seem to bring back the Buddies even if you Log out of the Test Mac User Account.
    The Fix Here
Is to Disable all the Parental Control Settings again (Remove names from any list) before Logging out of the Test Mac User Account.
The cause is partly to do with the Setting in iChat > Preferences > General Section that reads "When I quit iChat, Set the Status to Off Line" which is not the default - leaving a partial login for Off Line Messaging. As a consequence your Buddy List is constantly being told to block certain Screen Names.
A Variation on this is if you have Two Log-ins of your Screen Name from either different apps or computers.
Altering the Buddy List in one effects the other login. The computer or app that was logged in first take precedence.
    C) Adding Buddies as the wrong type (In Buddy List - But always Off Line)
This applies more to iChat 4 than it does to iChat 5
At the Add Buddy Screen/Slide in iChat 4 you have to choose if the Buddy is an AIM, @mac. or MobileMe name in a drop down.
The software shows the @mac.com or @me.com endings in grey in the Screen Name text field and adds this for you.
This can lead to Buddies being added as the wrong type as in ralphjohnsr added as [email protected] etc.
It can also lead to people being added with 2 @ symbols in the Screen Name ([email protected]@mac.com) and iChat not always telling you this is not allowed.
In both iChat 4 and 5, as Jabber IDs/Screen Names also look like Email Addresses, we have to also consider whether AIM names have been added to a Jabber List or Jabber Names added to AIM valid Lists.
    D) Plain old Typos
Here I am talking about misreading someone's Screen Name and typing that in (Such as receiving and email with a Screen Name in it and typing the letter O for 0 (zero).)
And of course, just plain typing mistakes.
The Fix for C) and D)
The Buddy in this case will be in the Buddy List but will always be Off line
Highlight the Buddy with one click.
Do a Get Info (Apple()/Command(⌘) key and I key together) and their Info card will show up.
    Correct as Required.

(there is also an Option to display these in a separate Group).
Do you mean under the {color:green}View{color} menu where I see Show Offline Buddies? (both iChat 4.0.8 and 5.0.3)

I kept looking for a button for the "slide out" at the top of the Buddy list. Found out it's the dialog box that appears when you click "+" (Add a new buddy…) at the bottom of the list. Yes, I can act like a beginner too
(Slide out to me sounds like a sideways slide out, versus a Pop Up or Pop Down Dialog box).

  • How do I add my contacts to ichat?

I expect more from Apple. I keep hearing that I can drag and drop from address book into iChat - but that's not working for me. I have ichat open but no friends to chat with. Why isn't there a way to import them all from addressbook?

    Hi,
If the Address Book cards have the Screen Names the potential Buddy uses then yes you can select one or many Names and drag them to iChat.
The most I have done in one go is 249 names.
I used it to transfer names I had gained over time to Add them all to another Buddy List.
People's @mac.com and MobileMe Email Addresses may be their Screen Names but in many cases are not.
AIM ore recently seem to be encouraging people to Register for an AIM Email address or substitute a third party one rather than using the Screen Name only method.
Mine is really old and is just ralphjohnsr gained from using Netscape but is a valid AIM name.  (no @whatever.com)
In iChat you can create an Address Book Entry.
Click the Add Button at the bottom of the Buddy list
Select Add Buddy from the menu
Add their Screen Name in full in iChat 5
Add First Name, Last Name details
(You can at this point use the Blue arrow thing, next to Last Name, to link to an Existing Address Book Entry)
You Cannot create two Address Book Entries with the same details. (First Name, Last Name
iChat does make it look like they are being added (the fading in and out)  but then they don't appear in the Off line or Online sections - but then does not tell you why.
iChat lets you create Nicknames in the Buddies Info Card (When you have Buddies select one and do a Get Info)
Nicknames get added to the Address Book and again you cannot have two the same (if using Nicknames only)

  • How do I add Skype names to iChat?

I thought I read on the Apple site that with Lion, that iChat would find all the names in my Skype list and allow me to use iChat for contacting people who use Skype.  Am I mistaken, or is there a way to do that.  It did not happen automatically, so I am looking for an easy way to add all the Skype names to IceChat.
    Thanks.

  • Why won't "Add Buddies" work??

Using iChat 4.0.7. Have tried over and over to add AIM buddies....I enter their screen name, indicate that they have an AIM account, then enter their first and last names. However, when all is said and done, they fail to show up in my AIM buddies list (the tiny little window that opens when ichat opens).
    What am I doing wrong??

    Ok,
You have got past the hurdle of trying to add A contact with First and Last name details that is already in your Address Book. (iChat 4 does not tell you this can not be done the name just does not get added)
If they are showing as Away and you have other means to know they are on line then go to iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts > Security and check the new Buddies are not in the Block Specific People or you are not Blocking Everyone.
At the other end if they are Using Allow Specific People Only or Allow Buddy List only and do not have you in their Lest yet they will not appear as being On-line to You (Effectively you do not have permission to see them)
Other than that it can be a typo or adding them as the "wrong type" of Screen name.
    albertbloggs
    [email protected] and
[email protected] are three different Screen Names.
Get one of the Buddies to Text to you.
Then go to the Buddies menu and see if the Add Buddy option is dark text with their Screen Name
If it is you added them with a typo or as the "wrong type"
You can then use Get Info (Apple Key and i together whilst highlighting the Buddy) to compare spellings and other info.

  • Won't add contact?

I'm trying to add my girlfriend as a contact. I put her AIM in the 'Add Buddy' box and she shows up for a little bit kinda flashing for about 3 seconds, and then goes away. What am I doing wrong?

    Ok,
Go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Security Setting tabs and check she has not been added to the Block list.
You did try the Double .plists removal and restart iChat ?
The final most sever is to Quit iChat.
Open Applications/Utilities and Start Activity Monitor and then find iChatAgent and use the red button to Quit and confirm Force Quit in the Pop up.
The problem seems to be caused when iChat can not login properly to the AIM servers or getting a partial login whilst the AIM servers are out of Synch.
Some of this info is then held in the .plists and the problem seems to perpetuate from then on.
It did seem that they were three distinct levels to this but now those seem to be becoming blurred.

  • Buddy disappearing from buddy list

My brother is in my address book and I try to add him to my AIM buddy list and he just disappears after it seems to blink a few times...

If a Contact is in the Address Book with or without a Screen Name and you try to add the same Person as a New Buddy with First and Last Name in iChat the Address Book will not allow you to duplicate the entry and iChat does not add the Buddy.
The actual issue is called Feedbag Error 10 but iChat 4 does not report it as such.
Add the Screen Name to the Info in the Address Book and then drag the Name in the middle column to iChat (or when Adding a Buddy use the drop down to expand the Address Book bit and choose the Address Book Name that way).

  • I cant find my buddy list on messages!

my friend told me one way, but it was not working for me... HELP!!!!

    Hi,
Various Menu items depend on certain windows being open.
When you start Messages for the first time you are asked for an Apple ID which "registers"  it for iMessages.
If you then go to the app's Preferences > Accounts you will see two Accounts.
The iMessages one and the default Bonjour one that goes with it.  (everyone has these irrespective if they are Active or not)
The default state of the Bonjour one is be Un-enabled in the check box.
At this point the Buddies Menu  will list the Messages (CMD +0) option.
If you enable  the Bonjour account the Window Menu also shows Buddies (CMD+1)
The Bonjour Account shows Buddies that are in fact other Macs on your LAN with iChat and the Bonjour account enabled.
i.e. you can't add Buddies to this list and the Buddies > Add Buddy is not active (Greyed out)
IF you then add an AIM, Jabber or Yahoo account to Messages  then the Buddies List is a combined one (it can be unlinked in the General Section of the Preferences).
The Window Menu will now look a bit like this:-
The Names of the accounts depends on the Description used in Message > Preferences > Accounts.
The Order depends on the order in the Preferences list as well.
At this point you need to Display the Buddy Lists and then it will depend on Account type as to whether the Buddies > Add Buddy is active.
You can also Add Buddies from the Chat window.
If there are several Chats (Buddy Lists) or Conversations (iMessages) you will need to select one.
The actual Chat (not an iMessage) will need to be AIM, Jabber or Yahoo as above.
This pic is test Conversations (iMessages) between my Apple ID and iPhone number highlighted and the Buddies Menu in drop down.
I send from this computer with the pic from Messages (the sig pic I use here).  The sync back from the iPhone also shows this.
Incoming iMessages started at the iPhone end show the Contacts app pic (Top Hat) that the iPhone uses.
As an Apple ID and therefore iMessages it has no Buddy List so Add Buddy cannot work.
(As you can see Screen Sharing also does not work.)

  • IChat automatically deleting newly added buddy.

When I tried adding a new buddy today on iChat using the add buddy shortcut the buddy appeared as online, the name flashed a couple times, and then was removed from the list. I have tried to add this buddy multiple times with the same result. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

    Hi
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.
