Add canvas to a cropped smart object

Hello,
Using PS6 64 bit.
I bring in an image as a smart object, crop it (with 'delete cropped pixels' checked) and then attempt to add canvas on all sides.
The image reverts to its pre-cropped size with the added canvas on 3 sides.
If I flatten the smart object before adding canvas, it works fine.
Is there any way to get this to work with a smart object?
Thanks.

Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible?
In the clipped state you could add a Vector Mask (Select All, Make Work Path) to the SO.

  • Cropping smart object files in PS with ACR

I sent a DNG from LR to PS with the "open as smart object in Photoshop" command and after I cropped it in ACR ... the result is in the following image:
It is not cropping canvas ...
So does this mean that we can not use ACR in PS for cropping smart object files?
    Any idea?
    Thanks ...

I see a display like you show.
For when the it was first opened as a smart object layer it was not cropped. ACR set the new Document canvas size to the image's pixel size  for there was no open document and the transform associated the smart object anchor point is the canvas center and the width an height sizes are both 100%.
If I then double click on the smart icon in the layers palette. ACR open the full RAW image.  If I then use ACR crop tool and say crop a portion or the upper left section of the image. When I click OK.  Photoshop updates the smart object layer object. The rendered pixels are the upper left section. The associated transform is not changed it still has the canvas centered anchor point and a width and height of 100%.  So the layers pixel are moved to the center and the width and height are  still 100%.  The number of pixels in the object is much smaller then canvas size so there are transparent areas on all four sides and the borders on opersid sizes are equal to each other.
If I double click on the smart Icon in the layer palette ACR open and all I see is the cropped area. When I click on ACR crop tool I see the whole image and the crop selection is the upper left section I selected the previous time I reprocessed the smart object layer

  • Smart Objects...changing canvas size problem

When changing the canvas size of a smart object, the layer on the original document will distort visually since it doesn't update the size of the smart object.
Is there a solution to this, or an easy way to quickly update every instance of the smart object on the original doc?
To clarify: I know that you can change the dimensions of the smart object on the original doc and it'll fix it, my question is if there's a way to automatically have that happen and have the original doc smart objects respect your canvas size changes on the smart object doc.
    Reproduce:
    1) Draw a circle
    2) Turn it into a smart object
    3) Go into the smart object, change the canvas size by increasing the height of the canvas. The smart object should now have a circle with blank space above/below it.
    4) Save the smart object
    5) The circle on the original document will now be squished.
    I'm using Photoshop CS5

When you change the canvas size of a document the only layer that will change is a backgroung layer for it does not support transparency so its pixels will be changed.  However a background layer should not distort it may be cropped  and have canvas added in which case the color of the empty canvas can be set in the canvas size dialog.  All other layer including Smart Object layer should not chang at all.  Layer positioning in relationship to the canvas  and the new canvas size is set during the canvas size change.  Layers can be any size and have any aspect ratio. Their sizes can be smaller, the same or larger then the canvas size. Even layer that can fit  within a documents canvas size may be positioned so that all, some or none of the layer is over the documents canvas.
I do not know what you mean when you write the original document chages. A smart object layer has an embedded copy of an object. The original document is not touched. You can open the smart object layer embedded object in  Photoshop by double clicking on the smart object icon in the layers palette smart object layer and change it size. And distort it f you wish. When you use Photoshop save. Photoshop will change the enbedded object in the smart object layer. You can also leave the embedded smaro object as is and change the smart object layer size and distort it using transform on the smart object layer itsself.
I think what you did was to open the smart object in photoshop change its canvas saze then save it. The updated smart object is realy round but you dont see that it is becaue it is being transformec ti fit the original documents canvas. If you do a Canvas size on the codument you will see the original docyment canvas size is not change and thet your now squaching a now changed taller object into a shorter canvas.  With each Smart Obkect layer there is as associated transform.
No I was wrong I just tried that and it looks like the transform was not the problem as yo can see I dir a Ctrl+T so you can see the size of the smart object layer is now biger then the original document and is positioned centered canvas is still 300x300 white area in image

  • MergedCompositeChannels and smart object

Is mergedCompositeChannels include previos smart filter ?
My filter plugin drawing some lines on document for comic artists.
I'm using Channnel Port Suite's ReadScaledPixels Callback with mergedCompositeChannels for preview.
When I create the smart object and apply my filter, double-click filter's name on tumbnail and modify parameters, it looks strange that first filter's result was shown on preview area.
If I add same filter on that smart object, the second one is works fine, only first filter on smart object has strange effect.
    Anyone suggest me?

I do three things in Photoshop:
    1. add background
    2. apply a glow around the imported vector graphics to enhance visibility
    3. apply an texture overlaying the whole thing
And I forgot to mention before that, in addition to printing, I also need to save the final images into individual JPGs or PNGs for digital preview.
    1. I can do in Illustrator, but I've found that adding any raster content in the AI significantly increases the file size and slows all operations.  So I'm trying to avoid doing this.
    2. and 3. can also be done in Illustrator, but I've found the results to look much better in Photoshop.  Not sure why, it just does...
But even if I do all of these in Illustrator, it does not solve the problem of extremely long operation time, since I will still need to eventually export the artboards into separate files.  Illustrator does the same thing as Photoshop when exporting: it rasterizes the entire file and then cut them down to each artboard, which, again causes the operation time to grow exponentially as artboard increases.
    EDIT:
I have also tried exporting the rasterized image as one single image, and then slice them up in Photoshop.  Unfortunately, the AI file is so big that Illustrator cannot export them as one rasterized image.
I also prefer to minimize batch operations in Illustrator.  A long batch operation in Illy will prevent me from doing anything for tens of minutes, whereas I can continue to work on different things in Illustrator while Photoshop is running a batch operation.

  • Resetting Smart Objects

Since no-one else seems to have done this. I seem to remember making this request once before, but here goes again
The ability to take Smart Object Transform values back to their default (the original resolution of the embedded object). A simple control click on the Smart Object with the option "Reset Smart Object" would do. Or "None"
I will also add to this one other Smart Object feature request also made previously -
The ability to show in the layers panel, Smart Objects that are linked Instances of each other - so that these are easily distinguishable by icon, from Smart Objects that are independent objects.

The forum is effective, just indirect.
In the forum, other users can offer feedback, and everyone can request more details.
When something goes into the bug/feature database, it's closed to the rest of the world.

  • Trying to crop layer, getting "Can't complete because smart object not editable" message

Using PSE v9 on a Mac
I have a layer with an image that I want to crop around an element on the image. I've selected the area and inversed, then hit delete (why isn't there just a 'Crop' command?) and am getting a message that says:
"Could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly editable."
I'm not clear what a smart object is and whey they're not editable, and how I can make this editable, and how does that change the image.
    Thanks
    doug

You don't won't to crop the whole photo, just delete the area from the layer
    that you've selected?
    Two ways:
    1. Go to Layer>Simplify Layer before using delete.
    2. If you want to keep the smart object, select the area you want to keep, not
delete, then hit the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom of the layers panel.
A smart object is usefull for resizing an image layer over and over without losing
quality (the image doesn't pixelate like it does on a non smart object)
If your not planning on doing lots of resizing or transforming on the layer, then removing
the smart object by Layer>Simplify Layer won't make much difference.

  • How can I add a Smart object (button) to a quiz background and have it work?

    Good day,
I have the need to add button to a quiz (in Captivate 6) to allow people to leave the quiz and go back to the start page.
I realize you cant add a normal button to quiz, so I added a smart object converted to a button on the master page.  I have it all set up to go to the page, mouse over shows hand and all of that.
the Captivate runs, I get to the quiz, mouse over it changes to a hand.  I click and it does nothing.  Any ideas why??  Any suggestions on how to do what I want?
    Thank you
    Dave Stabley

    Hi Lilybiri,
I always look to your blog for help.   This time unfortunately it didnt help me.
as I expressed above all I am trying to do is create a button that will do a jump to page with in a quiz.
I have some long quizes in the captivate projects that I create.   Once a person starts a quiz they might realize it is a bit more than they are ready for.  I am just trying to give them a way to click a buttong to get out of the quiz and back to a certain page.
On the master page for the quiz, I created a smart object (rectangle) that is converted to a button it is also transparent and goes over top of a graphic for the button.
I tell it to go to the correct page, and I set it up so that when you mouse over the smart object it shows a hand
When I go to preview this, I mouse over the graphic and get the hand icon, but when I click it goes no where.  It seems to me that the quiz is waitting for an answer before it will accept the click.   The catch is when I give the answer it forgets click and moves on the the next question.
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you

  • Smart object in PS: what if you crop or do perspective correction afterwards

Let's say I open a LR smart object in PS, and do some stuff in PS in layers.
Then, I crop or rotatate or fix distortion in the RAW image in LR.  What happens to the PS layers, which no longer match the size or orientation of the smart object?

When a file is passed from Lightroom to Photoshop as a Smart Object, there is no live link. From then on, changes to either instance won't affect the other.
You can make it happen manually, though.
First you save the Lightroom changes from the Lightroom database back out to the original file, by selecting the image in Lightroom and pressing Command-S/Ctrl-S (the shortcut for the Save Metadata To File command, which is under the Metadata menu in the Library module and under the Settings menu in the Develop module). If the image is a DNG, the edit metadata is written into the DNG. If the image is raw, the edits are written into the XMP metadata sidecar.
Next, in Photoshop, you select the Smart Object in the Layers panel and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Replace Contents. Then select the original file and import it again. This is sort of like updating a link. To save time finding the original file, from Lightroom you can right-click the image and choose Reveal in Finder/Reveal in Explorer, then drag it into the Place dialog in Photoshop that comes up when you Replace Contents. Once you get through all that, the Photoshop instance is updated because it re-reads the updated edit metadata you saved out of Lightroom, and applies it.
If in Lightroom you cropped, rotated, or distorted the image, it may be necessary in Photoshop to choose Image > Reveal All to automatically expand to the new dimensions or Image > Trim to delete extra space that resulted from the update.
It's a very tedious and time-consuming series of steps, but it can be done if you need it.

  • Smart Object - Cropping on a Layer via Select- Inverse- Backspace

OK, I have learned that you can't "Crop" on a layer, but instead should use the Select->Inverse->Backspace procedure to essentially "crop" a photo.  But this procedure does not work on a Smart Object photo.
I have also found out that if you Simplify the Smart Object, the above cropping procedure works.
So now I need some help on understanding what I lose when I go from a Smart Object to a Simplified Object.  It appears that I can still resize, rotate, etc. the photo, so what am I missing.

Michel- I guess everything is not as good as I thought.  I guess I mis-read the "Copy to Layer" (cropped) image as still being a Smart Object (when my wife did it), but this morning when I repeated the procedure, I ended up with a Simplified cropped image.
So the effect is the same -- i.e. either way you end up with a Simplified cropped image (whether you do a Layer->Simplify Layer and then do a Select->Inverse->Backspace  OR  you merely outline the area you want cropped with the rectangle and then do a "Copy from Layer).
And even I can see if I want to do any significant resizing (enlarging that is), I need to be working with a Smart Object because the Simplified start pixilating very quickly when enlarged.
I also think I finally figured what the little boxes in the lower right corner of the Layer palette icon is -- it indicates Smart Object, right.  I didn't see that explained anywhere.  Also, more education is needed in the Help Documentation about Smart Objects.  Thanks for your initial response -- and these forums are life savers.

  • Can I add a picture not as a smart object?, i need to move it.

Im working on a project in school and i had to make illustrations for a animation.
The one to animate my illustration asked for all the parts of the girl in separate layers so he could make her move.
I made the girl in Illustrator but when I tried to put them over to photóshop they would come of as a `smart object` and then they would stick to the background and they wouldn´t be able to move.
I really dont know what to do because i have never used PS before, can somebody please help me!!!

    Good day!
I made the girl in Illustrator but when I tried to put them over to photóshop they would come of as a `smart object` and then they would stick to the background and they wouldn´t be able to move.
An instance of a Smart Object is one Layer, so if you expect to get more than one Layer from pasting/placing Illustrator content you would seem to be mistaken.
    Alternatives might be
    • pasting the elements separately
    • placing each object on a Layer of its owns in Illustrator and using File > Export to save a "Photoshop (psd)" file and checking "Write Layers"
Are you sure the animator wants pixel content and can’t work with the vector data/ai file?

  • Add multiple smart object images to PS CC? (Win7)

I'd like to be able to load quickly several layers of the same image (all as smart objects) to blend exposures. A recent J. Kost blog entry demonstrates opening such layers directly from Lightroom but she discovers from reader feedback that Adobe never programmed a Windows version of this process that would allow me to open seeveral images in one Photoshop CC document as separate smart object layers.
I have tried to figure out the exact steps to make this happen with Bridge, too. It worked once, but there seemed to be delay in display of the smart object corner icon in the layer thumbnail. That's weird. "Place Image" -- from Photoshop -- seems to work the best.
This is so common to my needs that I am looking for a fast and simple way to build the layers. Has anyone found a work around to do this -- on Windows -- in LR5.3 DIRECTLY to Photoshop CC (updated to 14.2)? I'd do it from Bridge if necessary but spemd all my time in Lightroom for asset management as well as usual post processing.
When I search for this action/technique all I get are demos of opening *linked* smart object layers.

To my knowledge Illustrator does not support smart objects. However it does support image linking. Which means if you update a image in photoshop, Illustrator will know the file has changed.
When placing the file, you will see a checkbox at the bottom of the open dialog box for link, make sure it is checked. When you update the file when Illustrator is running with that file opened, you will get a promt telling you the file has changed and asked you if you want to update the image.
If you choose not to update the image at that time, you can click on the linked file text in the top tool bar and update the image from there.
If the file is not open or Illustrator is not running then the file will update the next time you open the file.
Also you will find a edit original button in the top tool bar to take you back to what ever image editor is assigned to that file format.
To assign a file format to photoshop:
For this example we will use jpeg extention
    1) Open windows explorer
    2) Menu options tools>folder options>File types tab>scroll to jpeg and click on it
    3) Click the advanced tab
    4) see what actions are listed odds are only open and printo are listed
    5) If Edit is not listed, click on the new button
    6) For the action type EDIT
    7) For the application used to perform action click the browse button
    8) Browse for photoshop.exe
    9) The following should now be in the application used to perform action box:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe" %1
The above file location is assuming you have CS3 and you used the default installation edit original button in Illustrator and the right mouse button menu in windows explorer will take you to photoshop to edit the file.
    10) After you click OK you will see the new EDIT action in the list
    11) Click OK  and then click close to get out of all the dialog boxes
The action can be removed at any time or edited to use another application.

  • How to place raster images as smart objects?

I'm trying to duplicate Photoshop's File:Place menu functionality and I'm experiencing something that I can't figure out. (I've added my code to the end of this message.)
I have a variety of test EPS images that I can run through the File:Place menu. They all appear on the document as "Smart Objects". That is I can then do a bunch of transforms to the image (like rotate, move, deform) before committing to the image to the document.
The important point here is that some images, when opened by Photoshop, first ask that I "Rasterize EPS Format" while others just open up without comment.
While doing these File:Place actions, I've been using the Listener plugin that comes with the SDK to generate code dumps of my actions. From these I've then generated my own code for placing images onto a document. I've had to re-arrange the code a bit to work in Objective-C so there's a good chance that I've done something wrong while translating.
Now if you look at my code you notice a commented out section. If you uncomment those lines then you basically have what I got from the Listener plugin log. But the problem is that this code then doesn't act like the File:Place menu action. It creates a new layer, places the image on the page - but its gone one step too far and the image is no longer a "Smart Object". The image is committed to the layer.
With a bit of experimenting I commented out the line that you can see commented out in my code. However, this does something odd. For all images you can see Photoshop put up a busy icon for a few seconds showing that it is process, but only images that Photoshop wants to "Rasterize EPS Format" actually appear on the page as Smart Objects. Trying to place the images that Photoshop doesn't rasterize results in nothing appearing.
That's my problem. If I uncomment that line in my code then all images that I test with appear on the page - but not as Smart Objects. If I comment out the code then only images that Photoshop wants to rasterize appear - but those that do appear then appear as Smart Objects.
So that's my goal: to place any image onto a document as a Smart Object just like Photoshop's File:Place menu command does. Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

If you want to go with Batch I would recommend creating an Action of more or less these steps:
    • set the resolution to the same as the background image’s
    • change the image from Background Layer to regular Layer if necessary
    • convert it to a Smart Object
    • add a Drop Shadow Layer Style to the image (do not use Global Angle)
    • place the background image (File > Place …)
    • move it behind the image layer
    • Image > Reveal All
    • make Selection from that layer’s transparency (cmd-click its icon in the Layers Panel) and use Image > Crop
    • select and transform the image layer to fit the intended position
This would naturally work out best if the images had the same size and proportions.
For the reflection on the floor duplicate the image, flip it vertically, move it in position and reduce its opacity to maybe 10%.
Realistically you may have to hide it partially behind the pillows, a Vector Mask would be an option.

  • How to distribute photos on a page when they are all smart objects

    Hi there,
    I have 5 images on a page in 3 columns, 2 each of 2 and 1 of 1
They are all Smart Objects that have been resized and cropped to fit the openings they now occupy.
I've been sizing, aligning and distributing these things by eye but watched the tutorial on how to use the alignment and distribution buttons so thought I'd try that.
Things seem to go ok when aligning edges ...for example if I select the two images in the center column and align their left or right edges that works OK. Similarly I can select the top or bottom edges of the large on in the column of its own on the right and align its top edge with those in the other two columns and ditto for the bottom edge.
When 'distributing' them however, things don't work, The distribution tool seems to be working off the underlying images rather than the visible images which have been resized ...and sometimes changed ...via the 'replace contents' command.
Is there a way to get PSCC 2014, latest build ...to distribute based on what is visible instead of what the underlying image is?
    Thanks,
    jj

Photo Collage Toolkit (Image File are placed in as smart object layers.)
Photoshop scripting is powerful and I believe this package demonstrates this A video showing a 5 image collage PSD template  being populates with images:
The package includes four simple rules to follow when making Photo Collage Template PSD files so they will be compatible with my Photoshop scripts.
Size the photo collage templates for the print size you want - width, height and print DPI resolution.
Photo collage templates must have a Photoshop background layer. The contents of this layer can be anything.
Photo collage templates must have alpha channels named "Image 1", "Image 2", ... "Image n".
Photo collage templates layers above the background layers must provide transparent areas to let the images that will be placed below them show through.
There are twelve scripts in this package they provide the following functions:
TestCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to test a Photo Collage Template while you are making it with Photoshop.
CollageTemplateBuilder.jsx - Can build Templates compatible with this toolkit's scripts.
LayerToAlphaChan.jsx - Used to convert a Prototype Image Layer stack into a template document.
InteractivePopulateCollage.jsx - Used to interactively populate Any Photo Collage template. Offers most user control inserting pictures and text.
ReplaceCollageImage.jsx - use to replace a populated collage image Smart Object layer with an other image correctly resized and positioned.
ChangeTextSize.jsx - This script can be used to change Image stamps text size when the size used by the populating did not work well.
PopulateCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to Automatically populate a Photo Collage template and leave the populated copy open in Photoshop.
BatchOneImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Collage templates that only have one image inserted. The Collage or Image may be stamped with text.
BatchMultiImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with images in a source image folder. Easier to use than the interactive script. Saved collages can be tweaked.
BatchPicturePackage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with an image in a source image folder
PasteImageRoll.jsx - Paste Images into a document to be print on roll paper.
PCTpreferences.jsx - Edit This File to Customize Collage Populating scripts default setting and add your own Layer styles.
    Documentation and Examples
Any size image can be fitted to any image location however it works better when images and image locations have the same orientation. Landscape to Landscape Portrait to portrait.
Note the difference in the populated images here when Image and image location orientations don't match up.

  • Create Smart Object /Frame Layer from open file in PSE8?

I'm loving the trial version of PSE 8.  Several features that I don't want to live without!
One thing that I find more difficult is creating a Smart Object or a Frame Layer (did those get replaced?) from an open file.  Because I digital scrapbook in different aspect ratios (12x12 for print and 15x9 for my photo frame) I want to maintain independent resolution of my pictures so I can change the crop, size etc.  My regular process (pse6) is to open a bunch of pictures and elements (papers, embellishments, etc), adjust the pictures as I desire (usually Smart Fix, plus a little midtone contrast), drop the elements into a blank file or template from the layers palette so they will not be frame layers, but drop the photos in from the Open Files bin as Frame Layers.  Then I simply resize the frame itself to match what I want on the page, and adjust the picture inside the frame.
With PSE 8 I found I can drop a file from "Show Files from Organizer" and they will become Smart Objects (File: Place works too).  However, they have to be saved first, and I often don't save all my changes.   I would like to be able to create a Smart object or Frame Layer from an open file.
Also, is there any way to change the size/zoo of the picture within a Smart Object?    Or crop it?  If not, does this really mean I have to crop my file, save it, and then add it as a Smart Object?  Ugh.  (Or create a rectangle for each SO and group them to form a clipping mask, I suppose. Either is a pain).
Any recommendations for a better workflow that maintains independence?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

Thank you!  This is very timely as I've been playing around with digital scrapbooking a lot more.  I've been having luck with using a grouped layer to "crop" the photo.  This way I can actually crop out what I know I'll never use, but use the layer mask to keep some edges that I might want around.
Do you have any opinion on whether it's better to use a smart object or not?  I'll try both, I guess, and see what it does to my file size.

  • How content-aware fill with smart objects

I've done a (hopefully) fairly exhaustive search, and don't see anything on how to use these things together...
Open an image as a smart object.  Add a layer for cloning and healing.  Maybe add a curves adjustment layer and/or a hue/sat adjustment layer.  Adjust things as needed.
Decide you want to extend the background on one side.  Increase the canvas on that side.  Select the chunk of canvas.  What process should be used to employ the content-aware fill for that new piece of canvas?  I don't seem to be able to have the smart object layer selected.  If I have another layer selected the fill fails saying there aren't enough opaque (?) pixels.

Oddly, I can't even find any discussion on this anywhere...  There's got to be a better way than what I've tried so far.
At present the only way I've found is to
    duplicate the smart object
    rasterize it
    select the part to fill
    do the content-aware fill
leave the selection on and copy/paste the selection so it's on a new layer
delete the rasterized copy of the smart object
There's gotta be a better/smarter/faster way than this...  How are other people doing this?
