  • Captions in iPhoto for Mac

It is easy to caption photos in iPhoto for iOS, by clicking "Add Caption."  How do you caption photos in iPhoto for Mac?  Where is the iPhoto for iOS caption stored in the Exif data?

    Terence,
Thanks once again.  At least in my version of iPhoto, the words "Add a description..." do not appear when you are looking at an individual photo, although they are there when looking at an Event.  In my ignorance of iPhoto, I did not know that the dialog box was even there in the absence of the "Add a description..." indication.  Once I found it by moving my cursor over there, I was able to type in the description (as well as the Title in the similarly unlabeled dialog box above.  See below.

  • How to add captions in iphoto

what is the easiest way to add a caption to a picture in iphoto?

Use the Description box in the Info window.
Or do you mean onto the face of the photo? If so, you'll need an external editor for that.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • What Mac App will allow me to add captions to my photos?

I want to add captions to various places on my photos... how can I do this in iPhoto and/or Aperture?
    Thanks

In iPhoto and Aperture - and I actually use both - you can use the free BorderFX plugins
    http://www.iborderfx.com/borderfx/
Or, if you want to use an app that's already on your Mac - and not third party, use Preview. You can set it as an external app in either iPhoto or Aperture.
And as you don't use either iPhoto or Aperture, let me assure you BDAqua, that you can keep your pics whereever you want with both Aperture and iPhoto.

  • Re emailing photos from iPhoto: after I create an event, I later add captions, each one beginning with a number. I'd like to email a set of these photos in the order they are captioned, not the original order of the event.  How do I do this?

I take a number of photos of an event which I download into iPhoto as an Event.  I later add captions to some of the photos in the Event, and I want to share them by email IN THE ORDER OF THE CAPTIONS RATHER THAN IN THE ORDER THEY APPEAR IN THE EVENT.  Each caption begins with a unique number followed by text.  How can I email them in the order of the caption numbers?

You can't, block capitals notwithstanding. Try using numbered Filenames. But remember how it's all received at the other end is entirely based on the settings on the recipients machine, so it might well be moot.

The photos.app does not (yet) have the option to add captions or tags. It is not possible right now. You can however search for the captions you added previously using the search field.  You can also search for album names.  So, as a work-around, put photos that should have the same caption into an album with a name like the caption.
See:  Migrating from iPhoto for iOS to Photos on iOS 8
You may want to send feedback to Apple, that captions and tags are essential and need to be added in an update. Use this form:   Apple - iPhoto - Feedback

I haven't seen any mention of adding the text feature to photos, but Apple is always tight lipped on new features. Try a photo editor app like the one below.

  • How do I add captions to pictures?

I am very new to the MAC world (one week to be exact). I have searched help and can find a method to select the font to add captions to photos but cannot find the method. I want add captions to photos in an album and then use the album to create a slideshow. Any help would be appreciated.
    Nepa

Another way to put captions in the slideshows is to first put the captions in the Description field that TD mentioned and then use this script to write those descriptions into the Title field to use in the slideshow. When you're done you can use the Photos->Batch Change->Title to File Name.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Syncing iPhoto on iPad (iOS) with iPhoto on Mac. How to?

I am using iPhoto on Mac as well as iPhoto on iPad.
Being a heavy (pro) user of iPhoto on Mac, I always organise by Keywords and Stars. When doing on Mac then syncing to iPad, it is easy. However if I were to go overseas and just bring my iPad with me, I would want to organise my photos using iPhoto on iPad (iOS), and create Stars and Keyword. But it seems it is not possible to sync it back to the Mac with my organised album.
How do I organise my photos on iPhoto on iOS, then sync the organised albums (with keywords and stars) with the iPhoto on the Mac?

    Leonard,
I do not know of any smart folders, but for each tag you define, iPhoto on the iPad will automatically create a (smart) album containing all photos with this tag.
See this page of the iPhoto Online Help:
    What are albums? http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkb9b1e2a
iPhoto creates the following albums as needed:
Camera Roll: After you install iPhoto on your device, photos you take with your device appear in this album.
Recent: The photos most recently added to iPhoto appear in this album.
Edited: Photos you edit using iPhoto. This includes photos you add captions to.
    Flagged: Photos you flag.
Favorites: Photos you tag as favorites.
[Custom]: Photos you add a custom tag to.
iTunes: Photos imported from iTunes using file sharing.
[App]: Photos sent directly from other apps to iPhoto.
Beamed: Photos beamed from another device.
AirDrop: Photos transferred from another device using AirDrop.
Photo Box: If a photo appears in an album (Edited, Favorites, Journals, or
So your "tagged" albums will be created automatically on the iPad.
I just hope that Apple would make this app more "compatible", so that things we do on the iPad could be transferred/synced to the Mac.
Yes, let's hope. Apple seems to be dragging the feet about syncing photo libraries, however. You cannot even sync two iPhoto libraries on the mac.

  • How do you add captions to photos in iDVD slideshows?

Is there a way to add captions to photos once you've put them into slideshows on iDVD? Or, if not, is there another way to add captions to them, though another apple application such as iPhoto? I haven't been able to figure out how to make captions for photos in iPhoto slideshows either. Please help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. if you're creating the slideshow from stills in iDVD use the Settings button at the bottom to bright up the pane where you can add titles and comments. The downside of that is every photo will automatically have it's file name or title entered. If you don't want that then while you're in iPhoto use the Photos->Batch Change->Title->None option before you import into iDVD. Then none of them will have the titles entered and you can add them to just those that you want. Or you can add them while in iPhoto before importing.

  • IPhoto Questions - Mac G5

    Hey guys!
I have a question regarding iPhoto in Mac OS X. All photos are arranged by date which is a problem since many of my photos do not have that information available. I want to locate photos by topic, i.e. name of child, event, holidays, etc. Is there a way to tag the photos because it will take me forever to find a picture by date. And in PSE3 for Mac, the browser window is not very big so I can't see a lot of pictures at a glance. Within iPhot, the photos are grouped under source by albums (names or topics). Why can't I browse by album rather than date? Any thoughts?
Also, I've noticed that when I double click on a photo to import it into PSE3, the photos are all small and very fuzzy. The size is like 2" x 3". Was there something unique to Mac I should have done when downloading the photos from cd to iPhoto? The photos are all blurry. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm getting pretty frustrated.
    Debbie

Okay, so are you saying I could set up folders say, in the Finder under Documents, and develop a file system much like I had in Windows? Personally, iPhoto doesn't help me much with Scrapbooking. I could download to a folder but the photos could remain in there indefinitely, until I find the time to scrapbook the pictures. The old windows folders worked just like a filing system. Open up this file for one child, this one for another. It seems to me it would be easier for me to grab my pictures in that manner than having to export to a file and then reimport. But I really don't know--thus all these silly questions. It sounds like the keywords in PSE aren't going to help me much--scripting? What is that? I tried to add keywords but they don't seem to connect to or find anything when I run the search. Should I try to recatagorize my files so I can browse to file folders because right now the browser just shows the worthless dated files from iPhoto? It it possible to turn off iPhoto when I'm in PSE and if so is this something to consider? I just want a file that when I see its name, I know what is going to be inside. Right now it's a guessing game and I don't have the time to hunt in every dated file to find that one picture. Even if I guessed the right year, many of the files do not have the correct dates so it's a hide and seek game.
I think what I need from you both is your recommendations about what would work best for a scrapbooker? I have page kits and photos and that's basically all I need. My kits are all filed nice and neat in file folders that tell me exactly what is in that file. They pull up nicely in the browser so I can see them. That's what I need to be able to do with my pictures.
I appreciate all the time you have spent trying to help. These are questions that are hard to find solutions to in a text book. What works for one person, doesn't for another. And since I'm still a newbie at the Mac I really don't know enough to make an educated guess. Everytime I do that, I screw something else up!!! I fix one thing and another question pops up! It's safer to ask the experts first!
    Thank you!

  • Exporting from ios 7 iphoto to mac iphoto

    Hello.
Is there an easy (and logical) way to export photos from ios 7 iphoto to mac iphoto?
I thought they had better (if any) integration.
I recently travelled to Asia and took pictures only with the iphone. As I take pictures of everything around me, I ran out of space and downloaded ios 7 iphoto to iphone and ipad, so I could send from one to the other. After a few days I discovered that although iphoto would show pictures from the camera roll, camera roll wouldn't show pictures imported to the iphoto if I didn't save them there.
Well, now I have like 5 thousand pics that I need to save to the camera roll in order to export to mac maverick's iphoto (which makes no sense to me). Now, the problem. I see an option called "SELECT ALL", but I cannot use it. So, I had to do it 100 by hundred, only to realise that, once I did 100, it would be added to the roll, then to iphoto and I'd accidently mark the new (old) ones and so I ended up with MANY of them multiplied X times.
    Can anyone help me?

I thought they had better (if any) integration.
Both are very different applications for different purposes, and they do not share much more than the name.
iPhoto on iOS is meant for easy sharing of photos on social media or similar and sending the photos onward, and are meant for just a few selected photos at a time, not for maintaining a large photo library and syncing it with a mac or other devices - see this page (What is iPhoto?), what iPhoto 2.0 is meant for.
The well supported ways to transfer photos from the iDevices  to the computer are Photo Stream and connecting to USB - both require the photos to be saved to the Camera Roll, as you noticed, but at least they will transfer the photos at the full resolution. (see: Ways to share photos)
Your best bet to get 5000 photos off your devices, probably would be sharing to iTunes:
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap the share button > iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.
Or use "Share > Other Apps" and save to Dropbox or other syncing appps.
    -- Léonie
Addd: to remember, which photos you already saved, I'd add tags, that will group them into albums in iPhoto.

  • Caption in iphoto

Pretty simple question: how do I put a caption at the bottom of a photo in my iphoto inventory (I want to put name & title of a person)?
I did a search in iphoto for "caption" and "photo caption" but nothing came up  -- is caption the wrong word to use? (maybe they use "title" like in iMovie?)
    Thanks for your help!
p.s. I want to move these "captioned" photos into iMovie.

There is no way to add text to a photo in iPhoto.
As you're going to be using these images in iMovie the easiest thing is to add captions there, plus that way, you won't deface the actual photos.
Otherwise: you'll need an external editor:
