Add Ethernet connected external disk

I have removed an internal disk from my old G4 Tower, put it in an enclosure so that I can use it as an external disk. The enclosure comes with a USB 2 or Ethernet connection and I wanted to try and use the Ethernet port.
When I connect the device to the laptop, the ethernet activity LEDs on the disk drive start to flash but the disk is not mounted on my desktop. The status of the Ethernet port in Network shows thatr the port is connected but it doesn't have an IP address and is not connected to the internet. I think this last part is a red herring because I am connected to the internet via Airport.
If I connect the disk via USB, then it mounts immediately. I have a feeling that the problem with the ethernet connection might have something to do with IP addresses but I am out of my depth with this.
Can anyone help please?
Many thanks,
Cliff

  • TS1963 Migrating from Time Machine onExternal Disk,  Why won't Migration Assistant see my USB Connected external disk drive?

I had to format my internal disk drive on my MacBook Pro, and reload Mountain Lion 10.8.3.   The startup assistant could not see my external disk drive with the Time Machine backup files.  After many tries I told it to skip restoring the files and let it boot up.  I was able to see my 1 TByte external drive and could see the Time Machine files using Finder.
I started the Migration Assistant and told it to migrate from Time Machine Files on an external drive.  It also did not see the backup drive.  The only drive icon it showed was the Macintosh HD (my internal drive).
Isn't it supposed to show you the drive you are moving the files from?  I tried starting it and it looked like it was going to try to migrate the files from the internal drive (to where I don't know, back to itselfl?)  Or  do I just not understand.  Is it seeing the external drive, without identifying it (in the Migration Asst,)?
Really looks like it is going to back up  the internal HD with files that are on the internal HD and not from Time Machine.
I need to restore my files and have been told I need to do so using Migration Assistant and not Time Machine.
Help pleae and soon, need to get my taxes finished!
    Thanks!

I'm surprised that no one replied to this.  But I learned a few things that may be helpful to some of you with this same question.
When you restore data from an external disk drive with Time Machine files on it.  As you move through the dialog (in either System Startup or in the Migration Assistant) it will ask if you want to restore from an external disk with Time Machine files.  If you select this option, it will show you only one Icon.  You will expect to see your external disk drive listed as the source of the restore.  The icon that is shown will look like your ilnternal drive and will be labeled something like Macintosh HD.  That is not your internal drive, but is your backup drive.  It is labeled  the same as your internal disk drive and it is telling you that you have found the backup for your internal disk drive.
Would be nice if Apple would put a note of explanation about this as part of that dialog.  I wasted several hours trying to make it work  Finally I took a chance and selected the drive shown and it did restore my system.  I ended up with two users since I did it from Migration Assistant.  Had I done it from the System Startup, there would only be the one user.

  • Format an Ethernet Connected External Drive from PC to Mac System

Hi there, apologies for my ignorance however after suffering Windows PCs for 35 years I have finally changed over to 2 iMacs and loving it.
I have a new model WD 1 TB (MsDOS formatted) external drive attached to my router via ethernet.
My iMac (imac7,1 a running OS X 10.5.2) recognises the external drive as a "PC Server" fine and I can access it from Finder and copy files to it.
Unfortuneately NEITHER Disk Utility nor Timemachine recognises its existance.
I believe I may have to format the drive for the Mac system. However how can I do this if Disk Utility does not recognise it as a drive? Is there some utility available that allows me to format an Ethernet attached PC drive to the Mac system.
    Thanking you in advance

Time Machine can't use a NAS drive even if it's formatted with a GUID partition map scheme and HFS+ Journaled. Apple dropped support for network drives before they released Leopard last year.
Apple does support their own Time Capsule device and network backups to Leopard Server running Time Machine Server.
There's not much point in formatting the drive at all if you ever plan to be able to connect to it with a PC.

  • Moving a Time Machine backup from a directly connected external disk to that disk on OSX Server

I have an iMac that has been using an external drive for Time Machine (TM) backups since 2013, so there is a lot of history in the backups.  I now have a Mac Mini running OS X Server, and would like to transfer the drive to the Mac Mini, but continue to use the drive as the backup disk, that is, doing TM backups via the TM service on the server.   However, if I simply stop TM on the iMac, disconnect the drive, connect it to the Mac Mini, tell OS X Server to use the drive as a backup disk, and tell TM on the iMac to use the Server TM service, it seems that a new backup file is started, rather than continuing to use the old one (symptom: when I enter TM on the iMac, I don't see any of the previous incremental backups).
Is there a way to persuade OSX server to continue to use the old backup file, rather than start anew, losing my history?
Both the Mac Mini and the iMac are running Mavericks and the Mac mini is running the latest version of OSX Server.
    thanks

What you are attempting is complex, and I am not certain whether it would be successful. I recommend you buy a new drive and start a new backup today, and set the old drive aside.
I have a somewhat different view of the benefits of what you are calling "History". I think that History just adds complexity to the Backup structure that makes it LESS likely you will be able to do a Restore. And Backups are only as good as their ability to do a proper Restore.
Copies of the currently-present files is all that Time Machine promises to keep -- older files that have been removed from the current source are not necessarily maintained on the Backup. In my opinion, a fresh, clean Backup from today is more likely to be able to Restore the things you need most -- without any error messages.
The most requested Restores are things Users broke or discarded today or yesterday, and those will be readily available tomorrow and going forward. In the event you need some really old copies of something, you can try to get them off the old Backup drive you set aside today.

  • Ethernet Connected external drive problem

I have a 500GB external drive that I connect to the home hub via ethernet. When I connect it to the home hub it does not appear in the connections list for the router and none of the computers can see it. The drive was working fine when it was connected to the router we used with our last broadband provider. Has anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

Thanks C1Rider. I changed the IP address of the drive to be in the 192.168.1.x group and I also changed it from dynamic IP to static IP. Now I can now connect to the drive from all our machines.
The only strange thing is that when I look at the router settings the network drive still does not appear as connected to the router. This means I cannot use the "Always use this IP address" setting in the router.
Section 8 from this link should help make sure your Static IP addresses never wonder into the Homehub Dynamic allocated IP address range.
If you need to reset the Homehub make sure you record any needed settings so that you can re-enter them afterwards.

  • Time Machine - I had to reformat its external disk - how do I start TM again?

MacBook Pro - 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    OS X 10.6.8
Time Machine backups to directly-connected external disk - La Cie 2 TB
I got Time Machine error messages saying it could not complete the backup. I followed advice at the Pondini TM website. I turned TM off. The problem was corruption on the external drive. Disk Utility could not fix it - invalid sibling link. I decided to abandon the existing backups and did disk erase, writing zeros to it. Took two attempts, the second attempt running for 15-odd hours. The disk has got one partition, GUID, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - this is stuff I don't really understand.
I can't see how to tell Time Machine to forget about the old backups and start up again from scratch on the newly reformatted disk. I can't find this task explicitly covered in the Pondini website.

When you erased the data that was reflected in System Preferences > Time Machine.
Glad your backup is working. You might want to consider adding a clone backup to your drive. Just like a seat belt and an air bag protect you in different ways when driving, you need both Time Machine and a clone for full protection.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone.

  • TS1550 What about when using the "Time Capsule" HD as the external disk, especially when it is connected by ethernet cable? I'm having trouble getting it to work at all. Don't need it to work as anything else, other than a ethernet connected Time Machine

What about when using the "Time Capsule" HD as the external disk, especially when it is connected by ethernet cable? I'm having trouble getting it to work at all. Don't need it to work as anything else, other than a ethernet connected Time Machine backup. Already have a wireless network that works fine so no need to mess with it. We get the internet via cable company and their modem is upstairs and the Time Capsule is downstairs in the basement. The latest error message was about it could not backup as it was already in use (should have written it down before clicking OK and moving on.

    See if this helps...

  • Double backup two MacBook Pros each physically connected to their own external disks?

We have two MacBook Pros 17" (an early 2008 and a late 2011) connected by WiFi, both running OSX 10.9.3 and each physically connected to their own My Book external disks.  After I started the first MacBook Pro's backup to add the second MacBook Pro's external disk, I couldn't set up the second MacBook Pro's backup to add the first MacBook Pro's external disk.  Each of these My Book external disks had previously been used for backing up each MacBook Pros.  None of the help pages helped.

On the computer to which the drives are connect enable File Sharing via Sharing preferences. Select the drives you want shared and CTRL- or RIGHT-click then select Get Info from the contextual menu. In the upper pane is a checkbox labeled "Shared." Check the box to enable sharing the device.
On the other computer select Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu. Click on the Browse button to locate the shared computer. Double-click on the icon which should bring up a login dialog. Log into the admin account of the shared computer using the Registered User button. You will then be prompted for the admin password of the account. Enter it and click on the OK button. This should connect you and provide access to the shared computer and devices connected to it that have been marked as shared.
For more help select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing."

  • How to ADD a second external Hard Disk ?

    Hi,
I'm using an iMac 1,42 GHZ PowerPC G4 mini.
With an external 250 GB hard disk.
Can I ADD an extra external hard disk ?
    And HOW ?
Thanks very much for an answer !
    John

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
You probably have a Mac mini, as an iMac is a different system.
Using firewire connections, you can daisy chain drives together. So, you hook one into the mini, then hook the next into a firewire port on the external hard drive connected to the mini. If your current hard drive is connected via firewire, you should be able to add another firewire drive by plugging into your existing external hard drive.
If you're using a USB drive, you can buy a USB hub that will allow you to connect more than one USB device.

  • Networking an external drive through TC ethernet connection.

I hope someone can help with this. I have a 1TB Time Capsule which is almost full. I got a Seagate free agent dockstar drive (1TB). The plan was to link it to the TC via the 1GB ethernet connection and move my iTunes library to it (freeing up a ton of space on my TC).
I've connected it and it is connected via the internet, but I can't seem to find it anywhere else (finder, Network, Disk Utility, etc). The drive was reformatted to be Mac OS Journaled, so that's not it. Any thoughts on how to "find' the drive as part of my network?
Seagate offers instructions in its manual (below).
"You can access the drives connected to DockStar network adapter from the Network window
(without using the Pogoplug Web interface). Follow these steps to set up local network
    access.
    1. Select Go from the menu bar at the top of the desktop.
    2. Select Network from the menu.
    3. Double-click Seagategroup.
    4. Locate and then double-click the name associated with your DockStar network adapter."
The breakdown is between steps 2 and 3. There is no "Seagategroup". Or anything else relating to the new drive.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Craig.

An external drive with Firewire, which is formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled) is your best bet. i.e. not FAT32.
You may be able to get a network drive to work if you set up symbolic links to fake out iMovie that the file is local.
Thanks. I've just discovered that that particular device has an ethernet IN port so it's no good.
thanks for the info on formatting though - I didn't know that.
that can be done with the Disk Utility, can't it?
if I was using an external hard drive to store and access my iPhoto and iTunes libraries would they also need to be "Mac OS Extended (journaled)"??

  • How to connect an external disk to time capsule?

    Hi,
I've just connected my new external disk 2TB to the time capsule device. However, it doesn't show in the disk tab in Airport express. Yes, of course the disk is on, it's hfs+journaled formatted and works fine when connected directly to my usb port on my MacBook Pro.
    Any suggestion, please?
    Thanks.

Unless this is a really new feature, Airport Express doesn't support external USB disks; only USB printers.
The Wireless-N Time Capsules and Airport Extremes support external USB disks.

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:

  • How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

How can I create a new folder in an external disk that is connected via USB to my Mac?

Just like you would create a new folder anywhere. Open the drive's icon from your desktop or the Finder, and click shift-command-N. (Or use the Finder menu if you prefer - File - New Folder).
If you can't create a folder, your drive may be the wrong format (you can't write to a Windows/NTFS formatted drive, for example). You'll have to back up any files you have on there, and then use Disk Utility to reformat it to Mac Extended (if it will only be used on a Mac) or MS-DOS format (if you want to share it with a PC).

  • I want to use my Macbook Air 2011 as an external disk for my iMac 2011. I connected the two with a Thunderbolt cable and when starting the MacBook Air I pressed "T" and it worked except with Office documents. Can anybody help?

I want to use my MacBook Air as an external disk to my iMac. I talked to Apple care and we solved it by connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the two computers. I then turn on the MacBook Air while pressing the "T" and it works. I can sit and work on my iMac and grab/change/save the files that are in my MacBook Air EXCEPT for the Microsoft Office files. I called Microsoft and they can't solve it. They say it might be a problem with the Thunderbolt cable. Has anybody have this problem?
Both computers are 2011 and they both have Office 2011.
    Thanks in advance,
    Alejandra

For Word it says "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, /)"
For Excel it says "the file could not be found. Check te spelling of the filename, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure hat the file has not been renamed, moved or deleted.
I tried this with many different documents, and I always get the same message.
