  • Windows 8 Pro volume license version does not have "Add Features" therefore cannot install media center.

As the title describes, Windows 8 Pro installed from the Volume License ISO does not have the Add Features wizard, and as such it appears to be impossible to install the Windows Media Pack.
I've consulted with Live Chat support who cannot provide an answer to this, they simply said it should be done through "Add Features" which does not exist.
A similar thread was answered by saying install from a Retail disc and upgrade. However this is hardly a solution, paying for an additional Windows license when you already have a volume license.
Can anyone, preferably MSFT, provide a proper answer on how Windows Media Center can be install on Windows 8 Pro which is volume licensed. If it can't be done can some reason or justification be given as to why it can't be done.
Please see previous thread here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itproinstall/thread/d63b46e5-c542-4dbe-be41-c46cda440723

I would like to pile on here and say "ditto" to all of the above. you have a licensed product and they don't even support the MSFT version of a DVD player. Nah, no one EVER has to play a older technology in corporate America due to training or presentation
(A funny clip of a movie before a ppt)? Nah.
But, I'd like to add a warning to MSFT senior management.  I know you want to force everyone to use YOUR cloud just like apple did to theirs.  Wont' work.  Some of us refuse to sign onto a web site and let you track all of our moves... some
distrust the cloud (Target anyone?) etc etc.  All good points, now for the out of the park.  The Harvard Business Review some years ago did a study on long term profitability of a company (you have to have a profit to stay in business).  The
most highly correlated factor: Customer Sat.  Sorry, but I don't see customer sat in all of these entries.
IF you made your product easier to use and NOT have to have a IT support person to move from a small workgroup to a server configuration (and PS, what in the heck to you get from a workgroup?  File Replication, Remote access to outlook files as one
does via exchange?  Really, every computer is in a workgoup any more, so there is ZERO value add in a workgroup on a MSFDT platform, however there is great value, even with a couple of users, in an Exchange/Windows Server Platform -- so why so you make
it so damned hard to implement one... Difficult for one to implement in an SMB environment (so lets just kill SBS) but growth from small business is where your growth is... just like IBM did before you, MSFT only appears to be listening to Fortune 500 it execs,
but I really digressed)  This is just one more pain in the butt to use MSFT in the small environment.  So what is the rational business decision?  Yes one can pick MSFT but with Zero value add in the workgroup, why not them other guys (who may
be apple, or android or even some Linux platforms)
SO you want to continue to mil the cash cow, listen to your forums.
One more note on the STORE.  Lets say you do pick a competitive product in the windows store.  Have them been verified they don't contain malware like MSFT products?  I believe the answer here is "NO"  So this adds another layer of complexity
and security risk on the corporate problem of "How do I play a DVD on my laptop"  I am sure none of you has ever played a movie on your laptop flying for business?
So, MSFT management, let me paraphrase the posts above:  "WHY don't you support our business needs"
And remember, people buy to have their needs met.....  (IBM Planned Sales Call)
If you don't meet small business needs, someone will... and that too is fraught with risk.
(For example of how to make computers easy to use in SMB I reference SBS, the Systems Management Interface tool in IBM Unix, or best of all, the AS/400.... something even Ellison couldn't kill, though he tried.

  • Windows 8 Add Features to Windows 8 Pro

    Hi,
I have Windows 8 64-bit that was preinstalled on my laptop, now I want to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, I already have the license from my dreamspark account. My questions are, upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro, from the "add features",
is there any danger of data loss (personal files) on the same partition as the Windows and from different partitions? What about the installed programs, such as Visual Studio, VirtualBox, Office, etc.?
I beleive the answer to my question is, no, there isn't any kind of data loss. But I still would like confirmation from an advanced user who has already followed these steps.
Another question is, what if my Windows 8 installed language is Portuguese, and I want to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro English?
Thanks everyone for their answers in advance!

    Hi,
Yes, the installed programs would be still available to use.
Here is some reference: Add features to Windows 8.1 (Available in WIndows 8)
You cannot upgrade or keep your Windows settings, personal files, or applications if you are performing a cross-language installation. You can only keep your personal files during a cross-language installation by using Windows 8 Setup.
For more information for the upgrade paths, please see:

    Hope this may help

  • Windows 8 add features not found

To install Windows media center I need a product key and to add the feature.  Finally I've got the key but the search for "add feature" only brings up "Turn windows features on or off". Is there another step that I'm missing?

I am too experiencing this issue. I have typed 'add features' in Settings but I don't see any option to add a feature.
However, I have definitely seen this option before because I remember being asked by some window to enter my Product key to add features.
    EH.
P.S.: Regarding activation. If you are using Enterprise edition downloaded by your Software Assurance program, the ISO image you are downloading is pre-pidded and already has a MAK key embedded into ISO media. That is, once installed, Windows 8 Enterprise
Edition automatically starts seeking for available MAK activation server in your network area. However, this requires your IT specialists to roll out Windows 8/Windows Server 2012 MAK activation server because Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 are using new
activation that is not supported by MAK activation server software used to activate volume license kits in Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2. Because it's no surprise that your IT did not do that yet, Windows cannot find any activation server. That requires
you to enter key that you get from your MSDN subscriber page.
That's how I understand the issue with the need to use slmgr -ipk <key> and then run slmgr -ato or slui 3 to activate Windows using entered product key.
P.P.S.: As for adding features, that's the whole mystery. I've removed all installed KB patches that I've installed so far, but I can't get the add features option back... ;)
Yes, that's exactly where I've seen the feature before: "If it is activated already, you will get the link "View details in Windows Activation" . Select the same, you will get the button "Add features to your edition". Right! But now that this link
    has disappeared!
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

  • Trying to upgrade from Win 8 to Win 8 Pro, missing "add features"

    Hello,
I bought a new laptop that has Win 8 preinstalled on it.  I can't figure out how to tell what edition, I think it's Home something or other.
I've tried following the directions at:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs
When I swipe and search for "add features" it comes up blank.  I have a MSDN subscription and downloaded (and got a key for) a Win 8 Pro ISO, but I tried running it and it didn't seem to do anything.  I was never presented with a
place to enter my key for the upgrade.  I assume I can use this key if I ever get the "add features" to show up?

You have to change the product-key on the "Computer"  to the Windows 8 Pro Key. But you will not be able to give the Win 8 pro product-key at the time during the DVD installation process, at least that's what happened for me doing a Win 8
Pro install over Win 8 Home. This is assuming you booted off the Win 8 Pro DVD and did the install, and it never asked for the product-key.
After the install, you can go to the Desktop tile from the Start page and  go to File Explorer where you will see the "Properties" tab. You can also  type in "computer" from that Start page, and then  you can click the
icon that takes you to File Explorer and to the "Properties" tab. It's at the "Properties" tab where you will see the specs for the computer and the O/S type. You will also see a line about "changing the product-key or activate it",
and it is there where you will give the Win 8 pro product-key. It will run for a little bit, but after it's all said and done, the O/S should indicate that it's Win 8 pro.
I believe the only time you will see the "change product-key" is when you boot off the Win pro DVD and do the install, and then the change product-key feature is activated so you can change the product-key.
I went through hell for a couple of hours. I did the install off the Win 8 pro DVD and installed it. It never stopped and asked for the product-key. I looked at the computer specs after the install, and it never showed that it was Win 8 pro. It was still
Win 8 Home. :)  What the hell do mean you are not Win 8 Pro? I did the install off of the DVD! :)

  • HP Split X2 upgraded from Windows 8 pre-loaded to Win 8.1, now cannot run Add feature to Windows 8.1

    Hi!
i have purchased a HP Split X2 13.3" laptop in a computer show slightly more than 1 year ago.
it comes with Windows 8 pre-loaded at that time.
Later on, Microsoft offer free upgrade for all Win 8 to Win 8.1 and i did that as well.
Everything goes perfectly smooth unless recently when i try to go Control Panel run Add Feature to Windows 8.1,
it ask me for product key!!
When i looked the bottom of my Split X2 laptop, it does not have the sticker of the Windows product key. There is only 1 Windows 8 hologen sticker! Hence, i use some key finder application to detect the product key.
I enter the product key when i run Add Feature to Win 8.1 again, but the Windows prompted me key is not valid.
    Why?
The Win8.1 insalled is genuine version. I can perform regular Windows updates without issue.
Appreciate if any expert can help to resolve my issue.

    Hi
The Add Feature is to upgrade your current Windows 8/8.1 Core Edition to Windows 8/8.1 Pro or Windows 8/8.1 Media Center Edition.
It requires you to purchase particular Product key with regard to Add Features option.

  • When adding features, "Add features to Windows 10 Technical Preview" dialog displays error "Couldn't add features"

The process for adding features by selecting "Add features to Windows 10 Technical Preview" from control panel fails with error "Cannot add features. Your previous edition of Windows has been restored, but you should contact Microsoft support."
This occurs after entering the key and the system attempts to reboot and apply updates. During the reboot, the updates begin to apply, fail after a certain percent, then roll back. After rollback and logging in again the above mentioned error message is displayed
in the "Add features to Windows 10 Technical Preview" dialog. Build 9926. Any tips on how to fix this?

  • How can I add features to Windows 7 Standard Embedded 64-bit?

    Hey guys,
I apologize if I am posting in the incorrect place but the embedded forum was specifically for POS Systems it seems.
My problem is that a third party has provided us with some systems that include Windows 7 Standard SP1 (64-bit) for their operating systems. Obviously the OS is cut down and missing a bunch of features (as an embedded OS should be); I need to add some of
the Windows 7 features back in. I know how to do this with DISM but can't find any 64-bit features to install as the Standard 7 Embedded Toolkit seems to be 32-bit only?

I'm sure I have legal and genuine keys for Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition (even for Professional edition).
    How to solve this problem?
    Thanks.

    1) I have run a chkdsk and rebooted.
    2) I have run the system file checker (sfc / scannow) and this reported no issues with system integrity.
    3) I have run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Reported repair made and I rebooted.

    Hi,
    >>I am trying to install the SNMP service on this server
In fact, SNMP is deprecated. Instead, use the Common Information Model (CIM), which is supported by the WS-Management web services protocol and implemented as Windows Remote
    Management.
However, we still can use SNMP service on Windows Server 2012. For double check, we can follow the blog below to check whether something is missing during installation process.

  • Think to add feature in Q10 !!!

    Hello every one
I am using blackberry since 2010, my last blackberry was bold9900 and last few days back i have purchased q10.. I am not phone manic at all so over all phone is good. Three reasons why i enjoyed blackberry
    1. Its a business phone and company maintain its image like this.
    2. Good keyboard
    3. Its has a great feature i.e to make call while phone is locked.
For me this is the best feature because normally my staff use my phone to make business calls and I dont want them to access my phone and see pictures videos etc. I havent seen this feature before placing an order i thought its like a Gold feature of BB and it will be there but i am surprised to see that you people havent included this feature... You must think hard to include this feature in update of os...
In one thread i saw the reply that if phone got stolen and the thief make international calls so thats why you havent include this feature I am sorry to say that dont think so hard. Its buyer choice weather to activate this feature or not and second thing when phone get stolen no one think of it first thought comes in mind is of contacts, important data etc. One can call service provider and disconnect sim .. So its my request either add this feature or add any application in blackberry world for it.

it's probably best to keep the p0rn off your phone so that it doesn't matter if someone sees your pictures or videos.
I've seen others ask for this feature but, as of yet, it hasn't been added. It's not in the 10.3.1 set to release next month either. Sorry.

  • Problem using an msp file to add features

I have an existing Office 2013 ProPlus installation which has been customised using the OCT and deployed using setup.exe with an msp file in the default location.
Now I need to add a feature (specifically, the Lync client which was not deployed in the original rollout).
I created a new standalone msp file by importing the existing one into the OCT, making the changes, and saving - so far so good.
