Add file to library. Track names added to iTunes (10.5), but Album information missing

I moved my music folders on my PC, then deleted all the songs from iTunes. Before I did that my library was in perfect shape.  When I "File>Add Folder to Library" all the tracks came in, however, for any tracks whose titles begin with track numbers, iTunes doesn't add album information.  See tracks with pre-pended numbers in this screenshot. No album information!
The album folders in Windows are still intact, and Explorer listings of the folders show the album names as well.  So windows knows the names of the albums.  iTunes isn't finding them.  See below.
Why isn't iTunes reading the album names.  My library is now a mess!  Now I've got thousands of tracks without album information.  I can't do all of them manually.  Any ideas?
Thanks so much!

My script picks up the information in the path the file is stored at, which generally yields Album Artist, Album, Track Number & Track Name. My own personal file name convention sets the filename to ## <Name> -  <Artist> when Artist != Album Artist and my script can read that data back again. In your case we really want to get down to the reason why iTunes isn't reading the tag that is there, and eveidently readable by Windows Explorer.
Here's a thought... Backup one of the files that includes something visibly different in the contributing artists field. Right click on the file in iTunes and select Convert ID3 Tags... > None. Now try playing the file in question. Does the extra data appear? If not give the same process at least one more go.
As I mentioned earlier the ID3 spec allows for multiple tags to be attached to a single file, e.g. both V2 and V1 for backwards compatability or even multiple tags of the same version but in different languages. What isn't obvious is what rules applications are supposed to use to give preference from one to the other. I'm struggling to find a tag editor that is aware of this issue though there are some that can display V1 & V2 tags and even copy data from one to the other. I don't offhand have a definite recommedation however.

  • Transfer all music from PC to iTunes, but add file to library only does one album at a time

I want to add all music on my PC to iTunes, but if I go to the menu and add file to library I would have to do this for each album individually and i have well over 100 albums.  That is way too time consuming.
Is there a way for it to search automatically?

Enable the menu bar with CTRL+B or open temporarily with ALT, then use File > Add folder to library.

  • An mp3 file on my computer will not import to itunes by either the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method.  Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.  My OS is Windows 7.

I purchased an mp3 from a private website on my laptop.  The itunes library i sync ipod to is on my desktop, so i copied the mp3 onto a flash drive and then into my desktop in the Downloads folder and Desktop folder as well as the itunes music folder, 3 places.  I opened itunes on the desktop and read the instructions for importing music that's already in my computer.  Neither the drag-and-drop or the Add File to Library method works.  I've tried both ways over and over.  Cannot figure out what the problem is.  I do note that the name of the mp3 file doesn't show the .mp3 extension, it appears as simply it's title, Eating Healthy, without any extension at all.  Could the filename be the problem, or do you have any other idea what I'm doing wrong?  My OS is Windows 7, using IE9.  Thanks.
ADDENDUM AFTER READING ANOTHER DISCUSSION HERE:  I have now tried right clicking the song in Windows Explorer and choosing Open With, clicking itunes.  The mp3 plays in itunes but does not add to the library.

I don't have a Recently Added playlist.  However, I discovered that the file I had named Eating Healthy was given the name You Can Enjoy Eating Healthy when it copied to iTunes.  I'm guessing iTunes pulled the full name of the piece from the internet.  Upshot--the mp3 did transfer to iTunes on all 3 tries, but I was looking in my alphabetized list under E, not Y, so I didn't see it there.  Thanks for your help.

I loaded iTunes on a new laptop. I copied and pasted my albums to a 4G stick and down loaded them to the new laptop. Placing them in, Libraries – Music – iTunes and than in Itunes used File – add file to library. So far so good. For what ever reason one of the CDs would not load onto the stick. I got the orginal CD and loaded directly to Itunes. Now when I look in  Libraries – Music – iTunes it’s not there but it is in and plays in iTunes. What should I have done or should I be doing? Thanks.

It's not a unique situation - happens all the time, smaller hard drives getting filled up.
It's also easy to fix. I just moved my itunes content to a bigger hard drive.
First I made a backup of the itunes database file - iTunes Library.itl. Just in case anything went wrong.
Nothing did go wrong, but I'd have it in case anything DID go wrong. That file holds ratings, playcounts, Date Added, and other metadata.
Second, in itunes change the preferences > advanced tab to tell itunes to put everything on G:
Set the itunes folder location to something like G:Media or G:iTunes
This will affect all FUTURE additions to itunes and not do anything to the existing locations.
Make sure the checkbox for "Keep itunes organized" is NOT checked. I also left the "Copy files when adding" unchecked.
Third, to move all the files to G: without itunes losing the paths, run the File > Library > Organize > Consolidate command. This will need to run a while, so be patient as it copies all the files to the new G: location. This does NOT delete the originals. You will have to do that.
Fourth, make sure everything in itunes is OK and you can play stuff in your library. If you're really cautious you can run a script to check for missing/dead tracks.

  • "File / Add File To Library" Not Working For Particular File

I believe I chose to delete a podcast. iTunes asked if I wanted to totally delete the file, or to leave it in a 'media file'. I didn't know what this meant so I chose to just leave it in a 'media file'. As expected, the podcast could no longer be seen in the iTunes Library / podcasts.
Later I performed: "File / Add File To Library" of that same podcast (ie. an .mp3 file). The file does not seem to be anywhere in the Library. I'm wondering if it is not added because it thinks it is in some "media file" which cannot be seen within iTunes? No error message was given saying the file was already there; however, when i attempt to add other podcasts from the same directory on my computer, iTunes has no problem adding other podcasts.
I've changed the directory to a different location on my harddrive, as well as changed the name of the podcast all to no avail. And spent 4 hours with this and am ready to pull my hair out.
I think iTunes will not add this file because it thinks it is already there, although from no where in iTunes can i find it (ie. not under 'music', not under 'podcast', etc.).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

"Won't add to library and doesn't give an error message" is usually a sign of minor corruption in the MP3 file. Treat it with a 3rd party tag cleanup program such as MP3val, and then it should be able to be added to your iTunes library.

Help I just moved my music files to a external hard drive and am using the new crappy version ( i know my opinion) of itunes and cant add the files to my libray it gives me the add file to library option but not the add folder to library option what am i doing wrong?

  • HT1473 I click "add file to library" and then the song i want, but it doesn't come up

Im really POed at the new iTunes on so many levels. first, the iCloud makes all songs i bought when i was 11 and deleted when i was 13 again. me and my little sister share the same account, but we have different computers so we don't have each other's song. now, thanks to iCloud, we do. i do not want carrie underwood or justin bieber, abd she doesn't want david bowie and led zeppelin. right now, the icloud isn't working, which is fine right now, but it's not right.
ok, about "adding music and other content to iTunes." you used to be able to drag a file from your documents to your library and it would be copied onto it. i am under the impression that that isn't the case anymore. I've tried a billion times and it hasn't worked. even when im on the led zeppelin section of my library and i drag "over the hills and far away" it won't budge; there's still only 6 albums and 10 songs. so i clicked "add file to library" and then the song i want, but it doesn't come up. and i did this a zillion times with a bunch of different songs, and nothing.
another problem is that the files are screwy. "houses of the holy" is on the album physical graffiti, not houses of the holy. if i edit the song's info to physical graffiti, all the other songs that are supposed to be on houses of the holy go into physical grafitti. when i go to song info, they still say houses of the holy. i just tried changing it again, and now all my led zeppeling albums are labeled houses of the holy. WHAT IS THIS MADNESS!?!?!?!?!
    #NewiTunesSucks

    Go to edit-preferences-advanced-
uncheck 'keep itunes media folder organised'
Then  make changes and see if itunes keeps the new info...
But warning! if you allow iTunes to organise your files in the future  these change will be undone I believe.

  • Add file to library after hard drive restore

Had to restore an old (January) image backup yesterday. About a month ago the music files were moved to an external drive from the C: drive so they are intact as they were before the restore. iTunes database (itl/xml file) don't include the hundreds of songs that have been added since January. (Yes, you are preaching to the choir.) I realize that I will need to go into preferences - advanced and change the music folder location to the external drive & that ought to see most of the songs. Question is the restored iTunes doesn't know about all the new files and am not sure the best way to add back to iTunes. I think that I want to use the "add file to library" option. If I select this and go to the external drive music folder will it only add files that aren't in the iTunes database already, will I end up with thousands of duplicate entries? How will it handle songs purchased since January? Advice please? Thanks.

I went ahead and and changed the music file location, consolidated the library. That went ok. Tried a test adding an artist's folder from the external drive that I know had a new album in it but just a few other albums. Ended up with duplicate entries for the previously existing albums. Bah! I think I have 3 choices here: 1) add all the new stuff to the itunes library manually (but remember there have been hundreds of changes since January..the music files are > 80 gb total. 2) add to library selecting the main folder (which appears that it will then add thousands of duplicate items to the database list in addition to the hundreds of new items). 3) forget about trying to preserve ratings/playcounts etc and wipe the database and rebuild it from the external drive.
Is there a way to rebuild the database and preserve the existing ratings/playcounts?

  • Itunes refuses to add files to library

I recently had a problem with my computer which forced me to reformat. before i did this, i saved all my music to DVDs, along with any files i wanted to keep. I have since reformated, added all the files from the DVDs to my computer. I have downloaded itunes, and "added folder to library" through itunes. the folder i added was the "My Music" folder, in which i saved all the music from the DVDs into. after a short while, i realised a lot of my music had not been added. when trying to add this music using "Add file to library", nothing at all happens. Also, when manually browsing the folder, and double clicking the music that has not been added (which is displayed with the little itunes symbol), itunes loads, but nothing happens. the music is not added, nor does it play. it seems to have affected mpeg4 and mp3 files. what is going on?
      Windows XP

So you have a DTS audio DVD.
You say you've "encode the contents into 5.1 wav files which work in QT".
How did you manage to decode the DTS stream into WAV files?
How many QT files do you have?
What you should do is to let your receiver do the decoding of the DTS stream, and just get your Macbook to send that stream to the receiver via whatever TosLink adaptor you already have.
iTunes is ONLY stereo, so if you have a multichannel WAV file, it won't read it. Also, I'm sure there are restrictions on bit depth, so if you have 24 bit WAV files, I'm guessing that also won't work in iTunes.

  • Import = Add file to library??

Hi. I'm from French Canada, and it's my first time here.
I saw a topic similar to mine further in the list, about importing many tunes folders. I had to reboot my computer recently, and I realize I'll have to reimport it all. I understood that I can do the "add folder to library " command to avoid doing it manually.
But as a strong user of this command since the beginning, I noticed that the songs "added" where "killed" randomly, and regular what this phenomenon. I interpreted it as I must "import" instead to put it "for real" on Itunes, but this process doesn't deal with folders, which means a lot of time. Is that the truth?
If it is so, is the "export library" command a useful one in my strategy of being safe for the next reboot action?
    Thanks a lot.

There's a bug with recent versions of iTunes. Depending on your path length, you can only add 2 or 3 files at a time via the File -> Add File to Library menu option. If you add more, the dialog just closes without adding anything. Try adding the files 2 or 3 at a time...it's a pain, but it's the only thing that works right now.

  • Cant add file to library

there are songs in my itunes music folder that did not show up in itunes after i transfered from pc to pc. when i click on file>add file to library and select missing tracks nothing happens. any suggestions?

Usually I only recommend 2 to users I post to, the totally free yamipod that will copy your songs back to the PC and itunes and Podutil which there trail version will do it all, copy the songs with there playcounts, ratings to iTUnes and all your playlist if your itunes is like totally wiped out. Only downside to podutils trail version is after every 50 songs it copys a pop up comes where you have to hit "OK" for it to continue copying, small price to pay for something that does it all for free.
On a separate note I hope your backing up your music, or atleast purchased music. Everyday we get 3-4 post where people have had there PC crash then they link there ipod to a blank iTunes or somethng, loosing all they have bought. Heres a link to backing up your music http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/musicstore/backup/

  • Add file to library in version 7.0.2 (Workarounds)

I rip my cd's as mp3Pro format mp3 to save space without sacificing quality. These are stored on a music drive on my network, with a separate directory per album.
With ITunes 6 - I got them into the library by using the Add Files to library command with no issues. This command in ITunes 7 remains broken.
If I try to get a whole album into ITunes 7 using this menu command, nothing happens. However it isn't entirely broken. I have found that you can still use this command to bring music into the ITunes library - but only 4 tracks or less at a time? How crazy is that?
The only other workaround I have is to open Windows Explorer, select all the tracks and drag them across and drop on the music icon in Itunes. However please be warned, if you are not precise with your mouse dragging and dropping and don't drop exactly over the quaver(?) symbol, nothing will add into library.
These workarounds mey help, but they are about a user friendly as a corned rat! The oddity is that the command is only partially, not wholly, broken. Is this an Apple ploy to get Windows users to switch to Mac OS?
Anyone know a way to get the Add file to library menu command to add 5 or more tracks into ITunes?
    Dell XPS   Windows XP Pro

One thing that has been suggested is to create a temporary folder and copy your tracks into that, then you can use Add Folder to Library to add the contents of the temp folder to iTunes.

  • Add File to library option

With Cds I've burned on to my computer before putting into itunes, usually I use the option to add file to library and select all the songs in a music folder to import them on my ipod, but now it won't let me import mulitple songs at once onto itunes, is there a way to fix that?
Also is there a way to override music info for band name? For example, any band that technically starts with 'The' (i.e. The Killers) gets listed onto itunes and my ipod under the first letter of the second word (I.e. K for killers) and it doesn't look right since it doesn't look alphabetized, can I fix this or stuck with it?
      Windows XP

If you want to add multiple songs at once use the add folder option instead of add file.
I think you are stuck with the sorting order thing.
