'Add files/folders to library...' comes up short

Long long long time MusicMatch User and have started using iTunes thanks to Pepsi's promotion.
When trying to import my existing music into iTunes, the process comes up about 20% short. A vast majority of my song files are in mp3 with a handfull of unprotected wma's which have already been converted by itunes.
Continue to do either 'add files' or 'add folder', even dragging individual files doesn't work.
Is there a limit to the number of files in the iTunes library, or a limit to the number of folders down a file can be?
The files it seems to be skipping are completely random. Of the ones I've tracked down specifically, all but one or two song from an album will have imported. But when there are about 500 songs that are not importing, I haven't looked for a pattern yet.

Some thoughts to offer:
I remember reading here that some songs or folders may not get 'Added' if their titles or other info had special characters that iTunes could not import. Sorry I could not find the post to reference. You may want to investigate this in your music files.
There is a way to try the 'Consolidate' and recover from it if it changes your ID tags. Make a backup copy of the iTunes database file (the .ITL file in the 'iTunes' folder). Run the consolidate feature. It will make copies of the files on the PC, not move them. If you do not like the results, then replace the current .ITL file with the backup one and your iTunes will be as before. You just need to delete the copies of your music files.

  • HT1347 When I add a folder to the library, does that mean that 'later' when I drop a new file into that folder (already added) it will automatically end up in iTunes? (or do I have to add file/folder to library every time I have a new file??) I'm using XP

When I add a folder to the library, does that mean that 'later' when I drop a new file into that folder (already added) it will automatically end up in iTunes? (or do I have to add file/folder to library every time I have a new file??) I'm using XP...

iTunes does not actively scan the media folders.  If you manually add content to a folder, then you must add that content to iTunes manually via the File > Add File/Folder feature.
The only folder that gets scanned is the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder.

  • Difference between Import and Add File/Folder to Library options?

When clicking on the File dropdown menu, what is the difference between using the "Import ..." or the "Add File/Folder to Library ..." options?
    TIA

Import... means to rip music from a CD.
Add... means to add existing files to the library.

  • How can I add files to my library?

    Here's my problem.
The 'Recently Added' list can't be cleared!!!! Do when I add new files to itunes, they just get all mixed in with the recently added files that are already there, and its a huge pain trying to locate the one's i just added in that mess so I can drag them to a play list. Is there a clean way to add files to my library so I can get just what I added???
    Thanks

    Hi
From your library view your songs. Right click on the first line where it shows name, artist, album, etc. You should see a list of menu items with some checked off. Check off the "date Added" one. You can now select the date added and select it again to show the most recently added order of your songs. Hope this works for you.

  • Cannot add files to iTunes library on Windows 8

I've recently purchased a new Acer laptop with Windows 8.1 installed and have the most recent version of iTunes installed, but upon loading it, I am unable to add any files. This isn't just with mp3s, but with tones, apps and books.
At first, I thought it may have been because all my files are stored on a NAS drive, but iTunes doesn't even recognise the drive despite it being mapped. Even trying to drag-and-drop the files from my desktop doesn't add them to my library.
I've trawled the internet for a fix for this, but there are none, though I see a lot of Windows 8 users are experiencing the same problems. I have uninstalled and re-installed ALL Apple software and devices multiple times now, to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.
Note the current version of iTunes has trouble syncing iOS devices if the applications are on a NAS UNC path. Accessing the library/media folder via a mapped drive letter works.

  • I can't add files into the library!

For some reason i cannot add files or maps in the music library of itunes, when i click "add a file to the library" and i choose a music file(for example .mp3 or .m4a) it just doesn't show in the library so i cannot play anything in this program,
i tried on another laptop with vista and there where no problems at all!!
    anyone knows a suggestion?

I'm also having similar problems on my parents Vista machine.
When an audio CD is inserted iTunes recognizes it, but once I try to play a track or import the CD iTunes goes through each track in about 1-2 seconds time, says that its done importing when it hasnt actually done anything. I uninstalled iTunes and downloaded a new fresh copy and the problem keeps happening. I ran the iTunes diagnostics tool on my Optical Drive and everything checks out. I opened up Windows Media Player and was able to rip audio tracks from the cd that way and was able to import the WMP ripped WMAs into iTunes, but this is too many steps for my parents to do (using iTunes alone is almost too many steps).

  • ITunes will not add files to my Library

    Greetings.
My iTunes will not add my recent downloads to my library.
I have tried adding the entire folder to the library and adding each song individually with no success.
    Please help if you can.
    Thanks for reading.

@CPL_STEELE: can you try to post these specifications in your own topic? (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=985161&tstart=0)
It's not very nice to take over someone else this topic, because the topic starter (Ganieda) could have another problem than you. It's also very confusing for everyone who is trying to help because there are now 2 problems in the same topic.
Never the less, feel free to follow this topic if you think it could be interesting for you problem.

  • Add Files To iTunes Library is not working

I unlocked several files put them on my desktop then added them to my iTunes library by going to File>Add to Library but after it clearly shows it's being imported and finished I then search the library for it but there's nothing there of that sort. I try searching for the folder name I imported and the names of the tracks but nothing. Any ideas? I'm using the latest Mac OS and ITunes.

The headers on the problem tracks may be corrupted or nonstandard. This can happen with some MP3 conversion or import utilities, and iTunes is very picky about header. Try running your MP3s through this utility:
    Mp3 Validator Mac version
It sometimes can fix the problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Add WAV folders to library from external hard drive and keep them organized

My PC died, so I removed the second hard drive containing my iTunes library - which is all in WAV and Apple Lossless formats - and installed it in an external drive case. I want to keep that library stored on the external drive but add it to the iTunes library on the new PC (which is a laptop and doesn't have enough drive space). I used the iTunes "Add Folder to Library" command, and added the top level folder ("My Music"). I have iTunes set to NOT copy files when adding to the library, but it is set to keep iTunes Music Folder organized.
iTunes added all of the songs, but only organized (kept the artist, album and other metadata) the Apple Lossless songs. All the WAV files have song titles, but no artist or album information. There are too many songs to manually add that information (about 2500). Is there a way to add and keep that information, or automate the tagging process? I know that WAV files don't have ID3 tags, but I hoped that since there were organized in iTunes by the old PC that all the information would transfer through some miracle.
One more piece of information: I do not have the iTunes data files (preference files? - the files that keep track of playlists, ratings, etc.) that are stored on the C: drive of the old PC.

You can elect to have the files left where they are when you import. See
    in the import pane.
However having said that Aperture will not be happy having the original files stored  voulme that is formatted FAT.
Also how is the windows formatted drive connected to the Mac? Direct or over the network?
If its a network drive you'll have additional problems. If it is directly connected to the Mac why not just format it for the Mac?

  • Cant add files to itunes library

I downloaded some songs from a website and they showed/loaded up on windows media player. I tried to add them to itunes and nothing happened. I burned them to a cd and then tried to import the cd, but it never showed up. I looked at the files and it says they're itunes music player files (.wax). How do I get them into itunes? They won't add or show up.

Not acc. You want .aac. I use EZCDripper _http://www.8to32.com/_ full version. Its been a long time but I think I got a free 30 day trial version years ago at Tucows.com. This is a site I've used for years for trial and shareware software, never got a virus. Don't know what I would do without it. Let's you try before you by.
Got off topic. This software free version is restricted in that you can only do 5 songs each time, but you can do it as many times as you need. That is of course if the 30 day free trial is still available.
    Good luck.

  • Can't add files/folders to 'My Passport for Mac'

I just bought a My Passport for Mac 2 or 3 TB (can't remember and unimportant).  I have just installed it on my MacBook Pro (it's 6 months old w/built-in CD/DVD drive) and the first file I tried to add to My Passport was a GoPro folder of pictures.  Error code -50 came up.  So I tried just one photo and the same thing.  I then tried to create a folder on My Passport for Mac and again it wouldnt let me.
I have had both PC and Mac's.  I havent had a computer for years and everything I try to do on this bloody Mac is trouble for me.  I am honestly getting sick of Mac.  My iPhone 4S has been nothing but headaches as well.  The biggest Problem I have with my iPhone is the sound comes and goes as it pleases, very frustrating!  Now this with My Passport.... come on....
Can anyone help me with the My Passport issue?  Regarding the other issues, any suggessions would be great!

Thank you very much. The problem was, because I have System Preferences set up not to show hard drives and volumes on the desktop, the mounted volume wasn't appearing there, even 'though I could see it was mounted in Disk Utility.
Prompted by your answer, I found the volume in my Finder and was able to drag and drop contents to it there. Ta-da!
