Add frame to photo
Hi I have a picture of my great-granddaughter and would like to place a frame around it. I was able to use the magic extractor to isolate the part I wanted, but can not seem to figure out how to access the frames and/or the backgrounds I want. Please, can someone help me. I need step by step instruction. Thanks Nadine
Nadine,
Here is a way to make your own frame if you don't like any of the built-in ones.
http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1Wtv9zTHYA1bm5jvUBftlyasptvlAM0
Method 1
1. Set Background color to default white. (see Note 1)
2. Image>Resize>Canvas Size, and increase Height and Width by the same absolute amount (not percent, see Note 2). This creates a white frame.
3. Select the frame using the Magic Wand tool with the Contiguous box checked.
4. Add new layer.
5. Set Foreground color to frame color.
6. Edit>Fill, using Foreground Color option.
7. Window>Layer Styles. Choose a Bevels styles (a good one is Simple Sharp Inner).
8. To modify the bevel, double-click the "f" symbol in the Layer's palette, or from the menu bar Layer>Layer Style>Style Settings. You can also modify the bevel via Layer>Layer Style>Scale Effects.
If you want the frame inside the picture (not expanding the canvas):
1. Use the Rectangular Marquee tool to draw out the frame.
2. Invert the selection.
3. Proceed with step 4. above.
Note 1: The Background color can be anything as long as does not match any color on the border of the picture; the goal is that when you use the Magic Wand it doesn't select anything within the picture. That's also why you check the Contiguous box.
Note 2: If the picture is not square, expanding the canvas by a percent rather than absolute value will result in the top/bottom borders a different width than the left/right borders.
Method 2
1. Duplicate Background layer, or rename Background layer. The purpose is to create the transparent frame in the next step.
2. Image>Resize>Canvas Size, and increase Height and Width by the same amount. This creates a transparent frame.
3. Ctrl-click the picture in the Layers Palette to select just the picture, and invert so that the frame is now selected.
Remaining steps same as Method 1.

Frames on photos - what am I doing wrong?
Hello,
I am having trouble figuring out something. I have re-sized a group of photos to ultiimately display on a photo gallery page and wanted to add frames to them. Whenever I apply a frame to the photo, the photo gets really small and a large area of canvas is added around the photo - I presume to the size of the original photo. It's okay if the photo is reduced a little to accommodate the frame but this is ridiculous looking - not to mention making it very difficult for me to choose a photo size that is appropriate. Am I doing something wrong? or is there a way to add a frame to a photo without creating such a large area around the photo? Sign me frustrated...
WebmomMaureen,
I suppose you are using the frames under Artwork and Effects. Looking at
those for the first time, they appear to me as predefined layouts for album
pages or scrap books. I don't think they lend themselves too well for your
purpose. Following is a quote from PSE5 Help:
"To add a frame or theme to an image
When you add a frame or theme to a photo creation, frames appear with a
blank (gray) area for the image. Click and drag an image from the Photo Bin
to the blank area.
In the Artwork And Effects palette, do one of the following:
Click the Artwork icon. Choose Frames from the category menu, and then
choose a subcategory, such as Colorful.
Click the Themes icon. Choose an item from the category menu, such as
Scrapbook.
Do one of the following:
Select a thumbnail and click Apply.
Double-click a thumbnail.
Drag the thumbnail to the blank background.
Drag the desired image from the Photo Bin to the frame.
Use the slider to resize the image in the frame or theme border. When you're
finished, either click the Commit icon to apply the change, or click the
Cancel icon .
Use the Move tool to center the image. When you're finished, either click
the Commit icon to apply the change, or click the Cancel icon."
You will probably be better off doing your frames manually, as described by
Andrei. You can also use the Shape tool to create frames. Or you may want
to Google for some add-on frames, which you can install into Elements.

Keyword add in any photo's Info crashes iPhoto to desktop
Hello & thanks in advance:
Attempting any keyword add in any photo's Info frame crashes iPhoto to desktop. I can reopen iphoto no problem, but any further attempt to add even an already existing keyword to a photo's information causes another crash to desktop.
Have done the following so far:
- Performed each task in Photo Library First Aid in turn, 4 times.
- Deleted dozens of under-utilized keywords to lighten that portion of the database.
- OSX and all apps kept up to date thru App Store.
- Time Machine backups working & available.
Question: Is there a method to restore only iPhoto keywords from backup, as a "JIC that works" next step?
I have EtreCheck and can post output (but will wait until/if requested).
Thanks again.Thanks LarryHN:
iPhoto Crash Dump Aug 27 2014:
Any attempt to add KEYWORDS, new or existing, to a photo that either already has keywords or not, results in the following crash & dump.
*Pls Note: This continues to occur after deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, in User/Home/Library/ Preferences and folder User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto, rebooting and reopening iPhoto.

Help! Actions and placing a pre-made frame on photos
Hi there,
I've made two frames (vertical and horizontal) in place of a watermark to add to my photos for my business. What I'd like to do is build an action that will allow me to place these frames over multiple images rather than having to manually place and align individually. A problem right off is that the photo frames are larger than the pictures themselves and weighted on the end where my name is.
Any help would be greatly apppreciated. Thanks!
FtaberMake sure:
1) None of your windows overlap
and
2) Your canvas is set to Fit To Window... you'll see it in the left of 3 pulldown buttons on top of the canvas.
Good luck,

Is it possible to add high resolution photos to an ipad2 without synchronising it?
Hi,
I'm looking in to offering potential clients an ipad with all their wedding photos pre loaded, but is it possible to add photos without synchronising each ipad to my mac? When I first got my ipad2, I couldn't use it for anything until I had connnected and registered it with Apple........I have got the camera connection kit, but haven't found a workaround for adding photos without synchronising yet?
I haven't been able to find much info on the subject so far? There must be a workaround?
Cheers,
MacSlatesThe first thing that currently needs to be done with a new iPad is to activate it by connecting it to a computer that is running iTunes - it can't currently be used 'properly' until after that is done. After iOS 5 is released and is pre-installed on iPads then I think that should change and you will no longer need to first connect to a computer.
The camera connection kit can be used to add high-resolution photos to the iPad, unlike syncing via iTunes where the photos get 'optimised' by the transfer process. If adding the photos to the SD card yourself then you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them
Otherwise there are third-party apps such as Simple Transfer which can copy photos to/from the iPad from your computer via your wifi network. But photos transferred this way will only go into the Saved Photos/Camera Roll album in the Photos app, not into a 'proper' album - and until iOS 5 is released and installed you won't be able to move the photos between albums on the iPad : from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums - right on your device
Also a problem with syncing photos to the iPad via iTunes is that they then need to be on the other person's computer when they then connect to it - otherwise the photos are likely to be removed from the device. Photos copied via the connection kit or copied via third-party apps shouldn't have that problem. -
I had to format the C drive recently. I have reinstalled iTunes but I am unable to add anything other than music, TV shows and movies to the iTunes library. It is not showing any option to add podcasts, books, photos or apps. These things are available on my iPhone but are no longer there in the iTunes library. Please help.
In iTunes go to general preferences and check the boxes for those you wish to see in the library.

How do you add captions to photos in iDVD slideshows?
Is there a way to add captions to photos once you've put them into slideshows on iDVD? Or, if not, is there another way to add captions to them, though another apple application such as iPhoto? I haven't been able to figure out how to make captions for photos in iPhoto slideshows either. Please help!
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. if you're creating the slideshow from stills in iDVD use the Settings button at the bottom to bright up the pane where you can add titles and comments. The downside of that is every photo will automatically have it's file name or title entered. If you don't want that then while you're in iPhoto use the Photos->Batch Change->Title->None option before you import into iDVD. Then none of them will have the titles entered and you can add them to just those that you want. Or you can add them while in iPhoto before importing.

How can i add text to photo in iphoto?
How can I add text to photo in iphoto without having lion or mtn lion?
You can't add text to a Photo in iPhoto. You need an external editor for that:
In order of price here are some suggestions:
Seashore (free)
The Gimp (free)
Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
Acorn ($50 approx)
Pixelmator ($50 approx)
Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. iPhoto allowed me to add location to photos taken by camera with no GPS. Photos doesn't have this facility. Is there any way to do this?
From http://geotag.modesittsoftware.com/Photo_GeoTag/FAQs.html
1. Does Photo GeoTag work with iPhoto and Photos?
iPhoto and Photos store their image files in various undocumented locations, and they seem to store the image metadata in separate locations. If you edit an image in one of their sub-folders, iPhoto or Photos may not know about the change. Instead export the image from iPhoto or Photos, geotag it, and then import it back into iPhoto or Photos to see the geotagged location. In the future Apple may provide a means of accessing the image files directly, but for now you must geotag the photo before importing it, or if the photo is already in iPhoto or Photos, export, geotag, and then import.
So it would seem that it isn't much better than using iPhoto 9.6.1 to do the geotagging, exporting the original from that app, & importing it into Photos. -

Hello, sassy4sue.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article that you may find helpful when creating or editing iPhoto albums that you are using as a screen saver.

Question Mark Icon appears in frame where photo should be
I have APAS edition 3.2 on my IBM PC. with at least 100 gigs not used in the hard drive. When I open my catalogs, a blue picture frame appears in the frame instead of the photo. When I click on the blue frame the photo still doesn't appear. I know the photos are in my hard drive as I have found them and put them all into a folder on my desktop. What can I do ? Thanks - Harry
Hey Harry,
This means that you have either moved or renamed your files. Please check if you have.
Cheers.
