Add image to iPhoto library doesn't open IPhoto screen
OS 10.4.10
Ibook G4
1.5 GB Ram
iPhoto 5.0.4
Hi,
When I want to capture a picture, whether from the web or elsewhere, I usually press control-click and a pop down window appears with various choices, one of which is "Add image to iPhoto library". Ordinarily, what happens is that the iPhoto screen appears, says "loading photos" and I see the image I have added.
Today, I have pressed control-click, "Add image to iPhoto library", but the iPhoto window didn't open. The application opened because the tool bar (menu?) at the top was iPhoto, and said so at the far left corner.
The weird thing then was that when I did get the iPhoto screen to open (and I don't remember what I did to do that) all the pictures I thought I hadn't downloaded, were there.
I admit I have been having some weird things going on in all my programs and in the finder, such as lots of the beach ball, and the stopped watch; putting the cursor into a line of text not to select but to write, and the word and/or the line got selected. Other things too. But iPhoto has been reliable up to today. I'm pleased that I /did/ get the pictures after all, but I'd like to know why the iPhoto screen didn't appear as usual.
Thanks for any help you can give,
Rafael

My concern is that your issue is not with iPhoto, but a more generalised one - especially when I read

I would have that Hard Disk checked, this could be the beginnings of a hardware issue.

Hello, today I started having trouble with iPhoto… Basically the program crashes a few seconds after opening. If I option-click when opening and create a second library, the program opens fine, so the problem seems to be with the library, and not the program itself.
I have no idea what's wrong with my original library though. (Which is where all my photos are…)
Here's the error message that appears when the program quits (it's very long):

The Macintosh HD has 57.6 MB available,
If that's actually MEGABYTES and not Gigs then you have a big and urgent problem that you have to fix now.
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk. -
I tried to move my images (over 25,000) to an External Hard drive to open up some memory, hoping to make my computer run faster. It took three hours to move the images and I see them all in the mac's menus. However when I try to open them with iPhoto now, none appeared. and when I tried to import them back to the main HD they come in to iPhoto just fine, but not with the albums nor any of the massive organization i'd created in the original. this represents years of images, and I can't imagine that I'd have to recopy them into folders/albums again.
Terrance Devlin answered a similar question back in April of last year. He said to make sure the ExHD is formatted to MAC OS Extended (Journaled) and to move the library to the ExHD and then open iPhoto with the option button and select "Choose Library" from the resulting menu.
Command "I" tells me that the new drive is formatted correctly. I can't locate the "Choose Library" when I open iPhoto with the opt button.
First, I wondered if the application needs to be on the same drive as the Library. I sure would like to know if I can find out how to restore all the folders I had them in. Terrance's advice helped the user that had asked the question.
Here's the url for that archived discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3849933?start=0&tstart=0
Can anyone help? I'm using iPhoto 5. My MAC is an OS X version 10.4.11.
thanks, brokenlomHere are Apple's instructions:
If you are using iPhoto ’06 or earlier, you will need to follow these steps to tell iPhoto where the Library is now located:
Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto. Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto Library.
Click Choose Library.
Locate and select the iPhoto Library in its new location.
(from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229 )
Below (in the link below) is what you should see when holding down the option key and opening iPhoto. Keep holding down the option key until this dialogue comes up. You want to select the Choose Library button.

When I try to open iPhoto I get the error message "The library "iPhoto Library" cannot be opened. To open it, you must upgrade to the latest version of IPhoto." But the app store says that the latest version is installed.
I just migrated from 2011 macbook to new 2014 macbook with Yosemite on it.

How are you launching iPhoto? From your Dock? The Dock icon may still be linked to an older iPhoto version. Just to be sure, you are opening really iPhoto 9.6, launch iPhoto by double-clicking the iPhoto icon in your applications folder. Your crash log with the the "Library not found" error message should show the version number of iPhoto. Which version is it showing? -
I am getting a message that my iphoto library cannot be opened because I mades changes to my photos in a newer version of iphoto and I need to quit and use the newest version of iPhoto. but in update, it says i have no updates. i dont even remember making changes in iphoto.Help. thanks.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Just recently upgraded to Tiger. Now iPhoto 4 doesn't open. Is it not compatible?
Hi, Zevelhead. Did you repair permissions immediately after installing Tiger? If not, do so now.

I was importing photos to iphoto and somehow lost access to my iTunes library. when i open iPhoto, it asks me to select a library, but there are no photo libraries present for me to select. I cant find my pictures and have no access to my iPhoto.
somehow lost access to my iTunes library.
What does iTunes have to do with this? Also more specific information might be helpful.
What system and iPhoto versions are you running?
Where are you being asked to select a library? What kind of library, iPhoto or iTunes?
What do you see when you first launch iPhoto?

All of the sudden, iPhoto library will not open because it says I must update to latest version for it to open. There is no update for iPhoto in the App Store. As far as my computer shows, I have the latest version. iPhoto version 9.5.1 was installed December 13, 2013. HELP!
Go to your Applications Folder and open it there. Drag a new icon down to the Dock.
The old version is preservered, and the old icon is on the Dock- remove it. -
I have just selected all my desktop icons and accidentally deleted them. This included my external hard drive with 22,000 photos in iPhoto. I cannot open iPhoto now. Can someone help please?
What is the file system of that external HD? is it MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
Which iPhoto version do you have?
If you directly select the iPhoto Library in the Finder and use "File > Get Info", does the library still show as "Kind: iPhoto Library" and is the file size correct for 22000 Photos?
If the library does no longer have the correct size, restore it from your backup.
But if the library has the correct size, try to open it directly by clicking it. This should work, if your iPhoto version is iPhoto '11. -
how do i rename an iPhoto library. while on iPhoto, if i click File, I dont' find Get Info
Select the iPhoto Libraryin your Pictures Folder. Then go command-i or File -> Get Info.

Since my last software update, my iphoto 11 will not import any photos from any source. The circle just spins...when I go to force quit, it says iphoto not responding. Backed up iphoto library, uninstalled and reinstalled iphoto. Still not working. Help!
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

IPhoto '08 doesn't open my library anymore
I am sure that this is addressed in some earlier post, but I am at my wit's end as to what to do and just need someone to tell me how to fix my problem. Here is the situaion:
I had moved my iPhoto Library to an external HDD, because it was getting too big for my 120 GB HDD (internal). It had been working well enough, and even had it working through a network hub so I could be anywhere in the house with my MacBook and still be able to synchronise and download photos into iPhoto.
For some reason, all of a sudden, last night when I opened iPhoto, it said that my thumbnails needed upgrading. That's the first time I heard of that, but I needed to get to some photos and clicked "Later" as it said that it would take some time and I could always do it later on. Then it just wouldn't load my library. I have a 50.6 GB library, with photos going as far back as 2003, when I first started taking photos. I have my wedding photos in this library. I can't afford to lose it. iPhoto doesn't recognize it, even when I employ the "Choose Library" feature and specify that that is the library I wish to use.
The photos are very much intact, because when I click on "Show Package Contents" after I highlight the library, I am able to see the individual photos and movies in Finder. This is actually the second time that I have had this problem, and I was able to work around it the first time by moving the photos to individual folders on my External HDD, and then access them using Picasa. I like Picasa, but wouldn't mind using iPhoto due to the seamless integration with the rest of Mac world that is my MacBook. Please help me to be able to use iPhoto again with my present library, as I don't know if I can trust it ever again. I am going to move those folders out of my Library, as I need access to them to be able to do what I need to do right now.
Anyone's help will be greatly appreciated.Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Edit: One other thing: what format is that externa drive? iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.

Option button doesn't open iphoto library choices when depressed
Specs of my Mac are:
Mac OSX
Version 10.7.5
processor 2.4 GHz
Memory 4 GB
External Hard drive are:
WD My Passport for mac 2TB (which I formatted using the disk utility to Mac OS X Extended
I bought an external hard drive to move my photos from iphoto off my Mac Book Pro (its' about 2 years old) so that I can free up some hard drive space.
I photo often freezes as I have over 22,000 photos on it. It opens fine though. I tried copying it to the external but when I try restarting it holding down the option button no window to choose the libraray it opens.
Any ideas why this isnt working?
Command option does work to repair iphoto but I'm not sure what do with that or if that can help me to fix this problem
Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.Do not delete anything until you know exactly what you have and what you want to keep
what exactly is your question?

I answered
double click on the library on the EHD to launch it
and now you ant to trash things which has nothing to do with either post

To do that
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
