Add Network-Drives to Finder-Favorites

Hi,
i upgraded to Mountain Lion OS X. In previous versions i had no problems, with attaching my network-drives to the Finder-Farvorites. I started the OSX with automatically mounting network-drives, everything worked fine. But now, i am not able to add them permanently to the Finder.
I wrote a script:
delay 5
tell application "Finder" to open home
tell application "Finder"
          try
                    mount volume "afp://user:password@server/folder"
          end try
end tell
tell application "Finder" to close home
It works fine on some iMacs and adds the "folder" to Finder-Favorites, but not on all of them. In my opinion that's a huge bug that needs a fast fix. I read many blogs and discussions in other forums with the same problem.
I hope someone has some advices for me!
Thx a lot.
Dom

Unfortunately things added to the Sidebar in the Finder window that are not on the startup drive have a distressing tendency to just vanish, even when the volume mounts automatically at startup. You can create an alias and put it somewhere else, such as the Desktop, and it will stay (as you have evidently discovered). You should also be able to add that alias (or even the original item) to the Finder Toolbar, and have it stay there (anyway, I've added a folder from another volume to my Toolbar, and it is always there and always works). But the Sidebar.....not so much.

  • Network drives open finder windows at every login?

I just created a network drive and set it up so that when I log into my machine it should connect/mount the network drive.   However, now every time I log in it opens a finder window to that drive.    Mavericks appears to do the same thing on my macbook.     Just curious if there are any solutions to stop this from happening but still mount the drive.  I did find some older suggestions to fix the issue but none of them so far have worked.
    Thanks

    nevermind, fixed itself, i guess

  • Missing network drives from finder

I have recently had a problem with the network drives that i've mounted showing up in the finder. I can connect to them still if i use a short cut i made. Some us of using 10.3.9 are having this issue since the server was upgraded to Tiger 10.4. Any ideas?

The "@" means the item has exended attributes. It's nothing to worry about. If you have verified that the appropriate boxes are checked in Finder prefs to show external drives on the Desktop and the Sidebar, it could be that the invisible bit has been set on the drive. Take a look at my article on the subject here:
    http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html
Either the Terminal command, if you have installed Developer Tools, or the Applescript should work. They always worked in Tiger, but Leopard has developed a new twist to the old problem, and in some systemes whatever is causing the problem promptly resets the bit to invisible. There is a bug report active with Apple, but no solution if you are unfortunate enough to have this happen. There have been reports associating this more intractable form of the problem with Spotlight indexing.

  • Server's network drive crashes Finder.

    Hi all,
Im having a problem where intermittently, trying to open a folder on a home server's networked (AFP) drive is crashing Finder and forcing me to do a hard reboot.  force quitting finder DOES NOT fix it.  I click on the server on the lefthand side in finder, and then on a folder ON the server, and it hangs and gives me the pinwheel.
Here is the Finder crash log- I hope someone can decipher it for me.

  • How to search a network/external hard drive in finder?

I use my Macbook at work where I am required to save all files I work on to a network hard drive on our server. I also have to be able to find and access files from the network drive for customers. In Snow Leapord I had the ability to type in the search bar in finder and it would search the entire network drive and find what I was looking for very quickly. Lots of people at work access the network drive, and every one of them has a different sense of organization. The ability to search is an absolute must in order to find anything. After upgrading to Lion, I discovered that the ability to search a networked or external hard drive has been removed. Lion only allows me to search my local hard drive in my Macbook. Does anyone know how to search a network hard drive in Lion? If not I am going to have to eat the 30 bucks and downgrade back to Snow Leopard. I have scoured through every little preference and option and have found nothing that even sounds remotely like it has anything to do with the search feature. Anyone please help, if not I am going to have to break out the time machine backups and remove this broken os from my computer.

system preferences, spotlight, privacy, add the network or external hard drive and then remove it from the privacy list. it should start to reindex this drive. You'll experience some slowness while this is happening and depending on how big your network is, it might take a really long time. But after that, you should be able to search in them as well. You can also organize what types of files show first so you can navigate to them easier.
    hope this helps

  • Network drive drag to Devices or Favorites: Disappears

I have a couple of working smb network drives. I connect to one using CMD+K. It appears on the Finder's content area. Now it is possible to drag the drive either to FAVORITES or DEVICES on the sidebar. However, if I drag drive1 to Favorites, it sticks, but if I drag drive1 to Devices, it just disappears. Then, if I drag drive2 to Favorites, it disappears, but if I drag drive2 to Devices, it sticks there.
What is going on? I just want to have all my network drives either in Favorites or Devices, but not separated.

One more time I'm bumping this. I have also tried making an alias (shortcut icon) for the network drive, and the alias will also not stick in Finder's Devices or Favorites. It just disappears after dragging it there. Is there any workaround?
With what logic do the drives stick or not "stick" (not disappear when dropping) in Devices and Favorites?

Hoping someone has some information regarding an issue I'm having with my workflow and Bridge. I have CS6 installed and am using the 64bit version of Bridge for file management. I work from 2 locations at the moment and have a portable drive that I take with me from place to place with my work files on it. In one location I can plug the drive directly into my system via USB, but in the other location (for various reasons) I have to plug it in elsewhere and access the drive through a network. This all works fine and I have no issues with getting to my files in general. Where I do get an issue however is when I start trying to add shorcuts to the drive within the "Favorites" menu in bridge.
The short of it is that as long as I have a shortcut to the networked drive in the Favorites menu, Bridge will run EXTREMELY slow when I am at the work location where I am accessing the drive directly. It appears that Bridge is trying to look for the networked drive on all the networked computers at that workplace every time I try to access a file or even use the menu system within Bridge (to right click a file for properties for example). I can alleviate the issue by removing the networked drive from my favorites or disconnecting form the internet (that one is not a practical option however), at which time Bridge stops trying to constantly look for the drive eveywhere and returns to normal speed.
This isn't a horrible issue for me, it just creaates a lot of repeat work of having to navigate to the network every time I open bridge again at the location where I access the drive remotely, or having to constantly re-add the networked drive back into the favorites every time... then having to remove it again before use at the other location and so on. Is there a way to adjust or change Bridge's behavior to basically tell it that if the specific drive isn't available after the first attempt to ignore it from then on unless I specfically click on the favorites link? Or in lieu of that, is there a way to have alternate "profiles" within Bridge that have seperate favorites etc. so that I can switch back and forth depending on the location I am at?
Like I said, not a horrible issue, but I really like having the quick, easy access to the drive that the favorite menu provides and would love to have a work around if one is possible. I realize that this setup is not common and so I might just have to deal, but if there is a super user solution or something I can tweak in a config file somewhere I would love to know! Thanks for the input and advice in advance!

Thanks for taking the time to respond guys! Yeah, I didn't think there would be any easy answer to this one. I actually have never had any issues running Bridge with any network I've been on with the exception of the lag when the network drive isn't present. Or to be more specific, severe lag when the networked drive is stored in favorites and then is absent in a situation where there is another different network of computers present. Don't know if it will help anyone who is trying to connet to a network drive etc. but all I do to get Bridge to "see" the network drive is navigate to the desired network drive or folder in Windows Explorer and then drag the drive or folder icon over from the Windows Explorer browser into my favorites area in Bridge. It drops the network link right into the favorites menu complete with a special network icon for the link. That has proven to be the fastest way for me to get a correct and functional connection to a network drive stored in Bridge. I was doing this with Bridge CS5 as well and it has always worked great for me.
For my network drive situation specifcally, I actually link to the entire drive as It's used solely for my design work. It's uniquely named with a title specific to me and my business so it definitely wouldn't be sharing a common name with any other drives or folders on another system on the network. I save the link to the network drive in my favorites and then I only ever have to click that to get to the root directory of the drive and navigate to whatever I need. Works great and super fast at the location where I need to use the network drive. Maybe I don't have hiccups like some because my computer has a reserved IP for that network tied to the MAC address of my computer so it is always the same IP every time.
The functionality I would like is actually very close in Bridge, with the only issue being that it insists on searching other computers on the network after every process it does if the network drive isn't present. The location I work at that doesn't use the network drive setup has 5 computers linked up to their network and so I guess it's scouring each of those every time I do any single thing in Bridge, looking for the long lost network drive lol! I have to confess this is strange behavior and really seems like a bug (albeit maybe a minor one due to the unusual workflow method) to me and Bridge is the only software I have that does this type of behavior. I can't really think of a good reason why you would need Bridge to look for a drive or folder in a location other than the one you have specified in the favorite path for it. I mean what if you have 2 copies of the same folder in different locations for backup purposes? You wouldn't want Bridge taking the initiative on it's own and accessing your backup folder without telling you,  especially if there are legacy versions of a file you wish to retain in the backup location.
If anyone ends up having a solution for this I would love to hear it! Otherwise I'll just have to hope that Adobe eventually buffs up the network functionality of Bridge down the road and in the meantime add and remove the favorites path all the time. I would think smooth network functionality would be increasingly needful and important however. I mean Adobe even offers a cloud service version of their software... That implies to me that they are aware that more and more work will be done "in the cloud" and over networked scenarios. I have my fingers crossed! Thanks again for the info guys!

  • How can I map a network drive so that it is persistent?

When I use my PB at work, I need to connect to a network drive. Is there a way to map to this drive sutomatically when I boot up at work but not give me any problems when I boot up at home.

Are you connecting to a Windows-based network drive? If so, I can't remember the exact procedure because I've found it actually more difficult to "map to network drive" with PCs.
For the Mac, what I've done is, to save headaches, is made a shortcut to my networked drive on my Dock.
    First, in the File menu:
GO > Connect to Server > Browse > (find your networked drive)
Second, double click on your choice, and what should come up is a new dialog box that says "Connect to Server" with the choice to connect as "Guest" or "Registered User."
Choose "Registered User" type in your login name and password, and click the checkbox for "Remember password in keychain" and then click on the CONNECT button.
Third, if successful, when the drive mounts, drag that to your dock and leave it there.
Then you can access your networked drive any time without having to re-enter your name and password every time. So as long as you did it right.
I don't recommend putting it in your Login Items because it can cause system hangups if for some reason, you aren't connected to your network when you startup. It will hang and search for that drive forever. ("Forever").
Trust me on that part. I've wasted precious time in most cases, waiting for the PowerBook to search for a drive that is not connected.
Also, you can put your networked drive in your "Favorite Servers" section by clicking on the "+" sign with the drive's address typed in. That way you also don't have to find it all the time.
But do the previous tip and you should be fine.
That is, if you are on a Mac to Mac network. I gave up trying to access the PC network because it kept reassigning the IP address and would never remember where it was.
(That's how I got those hangups at startup).

    Hi,
Is there any error message throwed when you reconnect the mapped drive? Can you directly access the UNC path of the mapped drive? What VPN programs do you use? Please check if the VPN client connect correctly.
You could refer to the thread below to check if the AD account is restricted by VPN.

    Hi,
How did you map the network drive? Manually via GUI? Command? GPP? If you're using one of the above solutions, then try other solutions as a alternative way to check the result.
According to your description, If Windows remains unable to reconnect mapped Network Drive at login, then I would suggest you created a batch file with net use command, use it as an logon script, this provides an alternate way to reconnect drives on
    a re-logon.
    example
    @echo off
    net use * /delete /yes
    net use x: \\server_name\shared_directory_name

  • Lightroom has trouble reading RAW files on my network drive ("The file appears to be unsupported or

Hey guys, I currently run LR5 on Mac OSX.  I've had my RAWs on an external HDD and have smart previews built for those files.  Recently, I upgraded to a new router, the ASUS RT-N65U, and plugged in my WD My Passport Ultra HDD (FAT32 filesystem) into to.  Now I've put my RAWs on the network drive, and verified via MD5 checksums that the files are being read correctly (albeit rather slowly) from the network drive.
However, whenever I try to view one of the photos on the network drive, Lightroom complains, "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged".  I've verified via MD5 that the files are not damaged.  Does anyone know how I can get LR to be happy with the files on my network drive?
(Bonus question: how do I make my network drive faster?)
    Thanks!

    Got RAWs from a D7000 and D600, LR v5.2 [922700].
Oddly things are working now... I ejectected the network drive in Finder and reconnected to my router.  Lightroom no longer has problems viewing the photos, even after I closed my laptop and reopenned it.  I think the problem might occur when my laptop goes to sleep for a long time and I reconnect.  Will repoert back when I try that.
I'm using an external HDD attached to my router.  The reason I don't plug the external HDD to my laptop directly is I don't want to keep doing it every time I want to access my photos, and my laptop only has limited disk capacity since it's an SSD.

  • Mount a disconnected Network Drive - Mac

If I put a networked drive in my Favorites in Bridge, it shows up as a question mark after I shutdown and restart my Mac, as I haven't connected to it. Would be great if Bridge could hook into the Mac network and then mount the drive when selected in Bridge Favorites.
We have about 10 Server shares here, and don't always have all of them mounted.

    Hi,
Sorry for the delay in reply.
I compared registry and the following 2 key will be created once mapped a drive:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Network\<letter>
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\<##server#folder>
I seems that you tried to delete the second one already. Please check if both keys still exists and delete them again as a test.
Note: backup the key before deleting incase any mistake.

  • Time Machine restore problem with network drive

Hi, I switched from PC to Mac. I bought a Lacie Network Space 2 (network hd) in an apple store (turns out it's NOT an apple store, it's an apple premium reseller according to the 90 days free telephone support guy, and apple's policy is then: you should have bought a 'time capsule' then.) That doesn't help me now. So I'm hoping some of you might have had this or similar trouble before. The Lacie drive is able to back up my macbook through time machine. It recognizes the drive and it does my backups on a time machine enable share on the hard drive. So I thought it worked like a charm. Until i wanted to go back to a previous date and restore all my data. I read you gotta start from the mac os install dvd and choose the restore option in utility. It recognizes the lacie harddrive. But when i want to connect to it it will say connection failed! I tried this over wifi (the hard drive connect to my linksys router with ethernet cable) and i tried this with the hard drive directly connected to the macbook with ethernet cable. It always finds the harddrive but when i want to connect to it to choose a previous date to restore, i can't even get there because it will say the connection failed. I'd really appreciate some help, because I tried to go on support pages and look up an answer, called apple, but can't really figure out what's wrong. So it can backup, it can restore single or multiple files in time machine, but it can't restore the whole OS when used with the install disc? Also made a dmg file with disk utility, but this one doesn't recognize the network drive. Finder does however. Any tips? Any at all, please?

    Fototom wrote:
I had to mark a 'time machine' checkbox in the Lacie UI for it to be able to work as a time machine drive. So the backups work fine without special terminal commands. It's just weird that it won't restore the full OS back when started up with the install DVD.
Whatever the +LaCie UI+ is, that's probably why you can't do the full restore. That may be doing the equivalent of the Terminal command, to "fool" Time Machine into thinking it's backing-up to a supported destination. But you can't do that when booted from your SL Install disc, so Time Machine can't find the network drive.
I tried the option during Setup Assistant to transfer data earlier, but it won't recognize the drive at that time.
Yes, that's likely for the same reason.
BUT I didn't know about *migration manager*. So the option of installing mac osx again and then creating another user and using the migration assistant, that DOES recognize the time machine backups, will surely work.
Never say "surely" until you know
It would be nice to skip the extra step of having to install the OS first, but this will definitely be a valid option to restore. So for now i'll mark this item solved.
Let us know how it turns out.
If anyone has even a speedier, better option to backup and restore a total disc image (or time machine backup), please let me know.
The time involved is probably about the same; it's just in two steps instead of one.
And there's only one step if you use a "supported" destination: Disks that can be used with Time Machine.

  • ICloud as a Finder Favorite or on Finder Toolbar

How can I add iCloud to my Finder Favorites (like Dropbox) or to the Finder Toolbar?

    You can't do that.

  • ITunes Won't Add Folders Located on Network Drive

I have my music on a shared network drive. I'm trying to rebuild my library. I can add folders and files from a local directory. The network drive has been assigned a drive letter in WinXP. However, when I try to use "Add Folder to Library" on any folder with music from the network, iTunes basically just ignores the command. iTunes doesn't show that the files are being added and the files in the folder are never added. I've also tried dragging a folder onto iTunes, with similar results.
However, I can add the actual music files into iTunes (from "Add Files to Library" for example). With 1,000s of songs across over 100 directories with subdirectories, I don't really want to do it that way; I want to just add the folder. I can see all of the files and folder, and I can play the files, so I don't think it is a permissions issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hello,
Hopefully somebody can help with my similair problem. I have all my music in mp3 format on my linux server, which runs glftpd + scripts that catalogue the mp3 upon upload into genres/year/artist to make for easier finding of songs. I then use samba to access the shares within the glftpd directory structure, e.g.; /glftpd/site/mp3/albums.. I have added this share into windows as a mapped drive (M:\). The problem is this, whilst I can add the folder/drive into iTunes, i cant manually update the album art. iTunes does find some are for the albums, but I have a different source which I want to use to update the art. I also noticed that its not just the art I cant edit, its the track info. This i expected becuase the tracks reside on a network share which glftpd has probably locked permissions on, however the album art i cant understand becuase the library resides on my windows pc.
    Any ideas ?
