Add one 2GB Ram card only (to make 6GB) in iMac 21.5 inch mid-2011

I have just upgraded my early 2008 iMac and now have a spare 2GB memory card. Can I add this to my wife's mid-2011 21.5 inch iMac? The top two slots are occupied by 2 x 2GB RAM. If so, how would I configure the 3 x 2GB in the four slots?
John

In addition to Mike's response, the iMac must have the memory added in matched pairs.  That is, two side-by-side slots have to have the same size ram modules,  The over-under slots do not have to match in size but you cannot leave a slot empty.  You must have either two slots filled or four slots filled.
iMacs are even more picky than other Macs about their ram...you absolutely must use the correct speed ram in all four slots.

  • Replacing RAM in an iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)?

    Can I install 2 x 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2 gb) and 2 x 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (4 gb) together in an iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)?

I have to admit that I do not know - I rely on OWC to have the correct RAM I need. Since you got me curious, I chased around for specs:
Here is the specs from Apple:
No mention of either there; OWC lists SO-DIMM. And Crucial doesn't mention anything either.

  • HT1423 Is it ok to install 2 memories of 2GB plus 2 of 4GB? (iMac, 21.5-inch, Mid 2011))

You can do it without any problem. 2x2 GB and 2x4 GB are valid. I recommend you to buy the RAM in OWC or Crucial in order to prevent compatibility problems and make sure that you buy the correct memory type for your computer

  • I have ordered RAM chips for my Imac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 (2x 4GB) from Other World Computing and they don't work.

I have tried to install on two separate chip orders.  One was the initial order and the other set was the replacement chips.  I followed all the installation instructions Apple has on their site.  I have even watched a few videos to make sure.  I have bought RAM chips before for my Macbook Pro and they work fine.  Am I purchasing the wrong RAM chips?  Here is the type of RAM chips I ordered... 8.0GB (2x4.0GB Kit) PC3-10600 DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM 204 Pin CL9 SO-DIMM.

That appears to be the correct dimms:
    204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Whether yours follow any additional apple requirments is another question.  Was there any mention about apple compatibility from the place you bought them?
If they aren't working they are probably bad or missing some additional apple requirement.  But try reversing them first or using one at a time.
FYI, OWC sells that stuff too (definitely apple compatible).  And if you follow that link you will again see you have the correct specs.

  • IMac 21.5 inch mid 2011 white screen when I wake it,  holding down mouse button and sweeping the screen restores the desktop.  Any one else had this and what was the solution?

When the Mac is awaken from sleep mode the screen is white.  I can hold the mouse button down and sweep the screen and the desktop reappears and everything works as normal..This just started and I am concerned that some hardware, video card or video memory is failing.  Has anyone else had this problem and what was the solution?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.  Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Installing a 2GB RAM Card

Hi, I have a Mac book Pro 2 Duo and I had it come with two 1 GB RAM cards. I now have in my hands a 2GB card but have not yet tried to open the Mac. I have two questions...
    1) I know there are 2 slots, does it matter which one I put the 2GB card in?
    2) is there anything else I should know before doing this process?
    Thanks.
Mac OS X (10.4.8)   MacBook Pro

    1) I know there are 2 slots, does it matter which one
I put the 2GB card in?
    No.
    2) is there anything else I should know before doing
    this process?
To protect from static electricity damage, touch a metal part of the chassis to ground yourself before handling the module and installing it.

  • How to upgrade ram for iMAC 21.5" i5 mid 2011

I recently purchased a 2-4 8GB ram kit for my iMac. Unfortunately, I ordered the wrong kit, one for a mid 2012, rather than one for my mid-2011.
I'd like to get some advice before I buy another kit.
My mid-2011 iMAC came with 4GB (2x2). That is nearly full now (~3.8 GB). I had thought an 8GB update (a 2x4 kit) would cover my needs. Unfortunately, I ordered and received the kit intended for a mid 2012. Okay, chalk it up to excerience. Experience also tells me to ask for help--HELP!

It also answered my first question.
Now that I'm feeling a bit more confident, I'll ask one more:
Maybe instead of adding two  4G sticks, I'd like to considder replacing the existing 4G (2 2x2s) with four 4G sticks. Is there a limit to how much ram the rest of the computer can support?
Thanks again for the prior reply, And thanks to OWC for the clear and simple video!

  • My Mac only supports Windows 7? (MacBook Pro 15-inch Mid 2012)

I don't get this... I have the latest 15-inch MacBook Pro (not retina) available and I get a message from Boot Camp 5.0.2 saying that my Mac only supports Windows 7.
Isn't this an error? Why wouldn't I be able to get Windows 8 drivers for the latest 15-inch MacBook Pro.
Is this an error/un-updated version of Boot Camp or will I be stuck with Windows 7 forever?

It means your Macbook Pro will run on Windows 8.
Mac Book Pro (15-inch and 17-inch, Mid 2010) and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
That means your 15 Inch Macbook Pro is newer so it should install with no issues.
The problem might be Windows not having drivers for your newer Macbook Pro.  Not necessarlly means that it's your Macbook Pro's or Apple's fault - it would be a Windows issue.

  • What is the maximum ram upgrade possible on a Mid 2011 iMac 21.5-inch

I have an iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 running OS X 10.9.5 which currently has 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram. The Hard Drive has 149.87 GB free out of 499.25 GB. It has been running slow for a while now. I would like to know what is the "TRUE" maximum Ram Upgrade possible. The reason I say "TRUE" is because the specs say one things when I find others saying another. I would like to install the maximum Ram that will increase the speed to its optimum. I have read some information that this particular computer will not take advantage of anything past a certain amount of ram.
So with all that said, I am asking for specific numbers, types of ram, suggestions etc etc...
    Thanks

Here's what you can do and need:
    Maximum Memory
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Sources for memory I recommend are:
    OWC
    DataMem

  • Upgrading RAM cards not showing up in system profiler... is this normal?

Just replaced both 1GB RAM cards in my macbook pro with two 2GB RAM cards, but when I go into "about my mac" it is still saying that I only have 2GB of memory, and when I go into system profiler and click "memory" it is still showing/giving details on two 1GB cards, is this normal or did I not install the new RAM cards properly? I assumed it would update the info to show the additional memory?

    This is not normal
Open up the Mac and reseat the RAM modules. This may help.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, return the modules to the supplier and get the proper modules.
    Best.

  • Wont read new Ram card

Hi ive recently purchased a S10-2 running on windows XP. 2 days ago I purchased a 2gb ram card to replace the existing 1gb that came with it when i bought it last week.
Installed it all in properly with the help of a video. (thats the only thing im sure about what ive done).
when i start it up, it suggests I start it back to when the system last worked properly and 2 other options- Ive tried all 3 and cant get past that process, keeps reverting back to that page.
Some forums are suggesting something about checking BIOS,
would very much appreciate some tips as I have no idea what that is or where to check.
meanwhile I will go and look up what Bios means :-)
    p.s
    Ram Ive purchased is a
     Zepto Memory DDR2 667MHz PC5300/2049MB
    kind regards
    Rob

Bios is information that loads before windows to tell what is going on with the system.
To get into bios (I am not aquainted with youir machine) your book might tell you, if not try hitting the delete key as the computer first begins to boot.  If that doesn't work try F2, try F8 and F10 if 2 doesn't work.
When yoiu get to bios look around for a reset to default or restore defaults, then press F10 to save and exit.  That will pick up the memory if it hasn't already.
You should pop the new memory out and stick it back in to be sure it seats correctly.  Twice I've changed memory in netbooks and for some reason it did not seat correctly.
You might also try poping the new memory out and putting the old back in and be sure it works.
