Add-ons or extensions crash my machine and come up as malware

Was looking for plug-ins and extensions, and came across Top Arcade Hits add-on, and searchhelper extension by conduit. Since installing these add-ons, and extensions, my machine has been crashing on memory, my homepage was hijacked by the search helper (Search Protect by Conduit)...I immediately disabled the plug-in and extension, and restarted Mozilla, with no change.
I also found Search Protect had installed into my startup folder, so uninstalled that via control panel, also with no change.
After 2 days of fighting with this, I searched for Search Protect by Conduit, and found it is known malware, bho, pup, and a hijacker to boot, which also mines data and sends to 3rd parties, as does Top Hat, which is listed as Adware.Gamevance
CNET recommended I use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to scan and/or remove the infestation, it found 86 entries throughout the memory, registry, program files, etc., 43 of which were actual infestations
Thankfully, after 1 pass, it has removed it from my system. I would be happy to send you the log if it would help, and suggest you remove these items from your add-on list...
The only issue I currently have is that the add-on and extension are still in my Firefox, disabled, but with no way to remove them.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

would like to help me explain the add-ons (plugin, extension) workflow, add-ons architecture inside the browser with pictures and the details please so i can understand how does it work easily.. thank you so much for your concern with my question... :)

Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry. New files will be created when required.
See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the "Find Updates" button (in Firefox 4: right-click the extension -> "Find Updates") to do a compatibility check.

• Since installing Firefox 4 Beta 5, the Add-Ons manager is empty. My add-ons still appear to be installed and working, but I can't install more, or uninstall, or configure them.

My add-ons still appear to be installed and working, but I can't install more, or uninstall, or configure them.

Try forcing Firefox to rebuild the list of installed add-ons.
# Open the profile folder, for details of how to access it see the profiles article.
# Close Firefox, then delete extensions.sqlite (you can also delete extensions.cache, extensions.ini, extensions.rdf if they exist)
When you restart Firefox the list of installed add-ons should be rebuilt.
If that did not work, you may have an add-on that is causing the problem, try the options in the troubleshooting extensions and themes article.
If you type about:addons into the location bar does that bring up the list of add-ons? I have seen a blank add-ons list if Mr Tech Toolkit add-on is installed, accessing the add-ons manager by typing about:addons in the location bar is a workaround with that add-on installed. The author of that add-on is working on an update.

Xmara

Hi :) but the thing is... I *do* have extensions and add ons that work fine but I do not have the options under TOOLS to to access them as extensions and add ons do not appear when I click on tools. The two items are not listed under tools when I click on it on the top menu. So the ability to disable addons is not available. My FF is broken :(

• Ads keep popping up, saying I have an extension called 'None Extension'. I looked for it in add-ons under extensions and plug-ins but I didn't find it.

I looked for an add-on I supposedly have on Firefox called 'None Extension' with no luck. Ad's continue popping up all the time, saying they're powered by this extension. Google won't show me anything about it either and I didn't find it under extensions or plug-ins in add-ons but I didn't find it. What should I do?

• Firefox 22 Silent Add-ons/Plugins/Extensions Installation

We're a Windows 7 x86 shop and we're finally upgrading from Firefox 3.6. I just need a little help finalizing the customizations for our Firefox 22 install.
Our requests don't differ greatly from others (no automatic updates, no plugin checks, set default home page, no Firefox sync etc.) and all that seems to be working so far. I ran the install on a machine that did not have a previous version of Firefox and found it largely behaving the way I expected it to.
However two things stand out:
On initial launch I'm seeing a 'checking compatibility of addons' screen. It doesn't ask me to do anything and disappears after a few seconds, but this worries me that it *might* complain about a plugin a user installed when we go through the upgrade process.
- Can this 'check' be avoided?
- Is it really doing anything? (eg: checking for blacklisted addons/extensions? etc)
- What's the worst that could happen here?
In the registry (HKLM\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions) I have two entries created by 2 other applications on the workstation each of which pointing to their respective extension/addon/plugin directory (e.g.: C:\Program Files\Application\some_directory). When properly installed, one is listed as an Extension, the other a Plugin. On the first launch after installation, I see two 'Install Add-on' tabs prompting me to approve each the installation. Seeing as these extensions are allowed/trusted and required, I want Firefox to accept them without prompting the user. Now, I'm aware of two key elements that largely govern this (and their subtle differences) but I can't seem to get this to work right:
extensions.autoDisableScopes
extensions.enabledScopes
With the former set to 0 and the latter 15 I relaunch FF and while I don't get the tabs, when I go to test them, it doesn't work. Furthermore, the Plugin is listed under Extensions which probably shoud not be.
- What am I doing wrong?
- How can I allow/trust/whitelist or otherwise automatically approve the installation of either specific add-ons, or add-ons within a specific location?
Please, correct me if I'm doing something wrong, or if there's a better way (e.g.: GPO's) to apply global settings for all users. I'm hoping to avoid a solution that requires installing a third-party plug-in
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Install/upgrade process consists these key files:

creates "%ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox\browser\defaults\profile\chrome" (if missing)
copies userChrome.css into the above directory
creates "%ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox\browser\defaults\preferences" (if missing)

• Add-ons in Extension Manager cc incorrectly shown in Photoshop cc 2014

I started with Photoshop cc and downloaded several Add-ons which I used, particularly Adobe Watermark. When Photoshop cc 2014 was released we realised that the majority of these Add-ons would not work in this new edition of Photoshop. Consequently I have to also run Photoshop cc as well to allow me to use these Add-ons.
If I open Adobe Extension Manager, and select under Products I see a list of all the Add-ons that work in Photoshop cc, which is correct. However if I select Photoshop cc 2014 I see a long list ( 16 Add-ons) which have enabled ticked by the side of the name. Only 5 of these actualy show  in Photoshop cc 2014, so something is wrong here.
I assume that Adobe Watermark is an Adobe product, so when are Adobe going to sort this out, and the problem in Adobe Extension Manager?

From the screenshots you have sent, we can see that not of all of those items that are installed under Extension Manager->Photoshop CC 2014 are accessible from the Window->Extensions menu in Photoshop. Some of them are Actions for example such as the ones by Panos, and Canvas Wrap is accessible from the File->Scripts menu.
For Edge FX, it is not compatible with CC2014, but there is a new Edge FX Pro version which supports CC 2014, available here: https://creative.adobe.com/addons/products/3189#.VEeJ--eSlS0.
Adobe Watermark and Watercolor Assistant have compatibility with only CS6 and CC, so it is likely that you have had most of these extensions installed for a very long time before their compatibility criteria was updated a few months back following the launch of CC2014. The best solution to tidy things up may be to uninstall all of your extensions from Extension Manager, then log on to the Addons website and click into 'My-Add-ons', then download the products again which will ensure you are receiving the latest versions and only the CC 2014 compatible ones. From that page you will also see at a glance the 'Where to Find it' information for accessing all of the extensions within Photoshop.
Russell Brown and his team internally who put together the Photoshop extensions are working on CC 2014 compatible updates to the Adobe extensions that you have, so we hope to see an update to them in the near future. If you would like to use them just now before they are updated to support CC2014, you can use them with Photoshop CC (or CS6). It is possible to have multiple versions of Photoshop installed on your computer, and as you are a CC member, all previous versions are accessible to you. You simply use the CC Desktop App to install older versions of Photoshop. To do this, launch the CC Desktop App and click on the 'APPS' tab, then scroll down until you see 'Filters & Versions'. Select this, then choose 'Previous Version'.
Hope this helps but please get back in touch if you have further queries.

• I by mistake chose to insall the weather app for Firefox on Apple iMac. I cannot uninstal from add ons since firefox crashes before then. Unable to use Firefox in safe mode. Help!

Basically I recently installed Firefox 3.6 on my Mac Laptop, only 3-4 months old, so latest Sea Leopard OSX System whatever
Anyway once installed I decide to have a theme, then add some add on applications. This seems to be the problem
When I first tried to run it all the apps opened home pages and I kept trying to close them as they did
Next time I got less pages but then I could not access the Tools>AddOns menu before the Firefox browser crashed
What seems to be happening is that the Weather app takes forever to load, my Apple Mac goes into the circle (thinking) mode which means I cannot activate any menus or move my mouse. Then by the time I try and type in say google in the blank www URL address the browser crashed. I have tried going into safe mode using the Option but makes no difference
If I can somehow instal the irksome weather app or get access to the Tool >Add ons menu and uninstall each of the several apps I have daftly installed I know I can get a solution
Any help or suggestions appreciated since I still think Firefox is cool:-). its the apps or some of them that suck!

Maybe you did't understand my previous statement. There are no crashes in FF 3.6, There is no previous evidence FF 14 was ever here, I completely uninstalled all trace of Firefox, no app data, no preferences, no cache. I will upgrade to FF14 so I can send IDs,
so here ya go.

• Safari Download Add-ons or Extension

Hi everyone,I'm looking for an extension or add-ons for safari or google chrome or mozilla firefox thats for speed downloading,if not so then i want a software like IDM for windows

One to avoid is Speed Download. It's not supported on Mavericks >  http://speed-download.en.softonic.com/mac
You are better off not using third party speed download software on a Mac. It will only cause problems.
Better to conatct your ISP for upgrade options.

• MetaStream 3 does NOT show up in the Add-ons BLOCKLIST yet it is disabled and will not update. HELP???

MetaStream 3 is listed as one of my add-ons. I believe it was used for videos. Since it was disabled, I have not been able to view YouTube and other video types. I get the message "The plugin for this content has been disabled. Click here to manage your plugins."

The plugin you need is Flash. Go to Tools > Add-ons and select the plugins tab (the lego-block) and enable things.

• Flash-Addon "succesfully installed" but not listed in "add-ons", keeps asking to reinstall again and again...

I have FF 15.0.1 freshly installed on a new Win7-PC (home premium 64bit).
I have tried to install Adobe Flash from their site as well as through the automatically proposed add-on. Both claim it was "installed successfully". But when I check the addon-list, it's not there. Restarting firefox doesn't work.
I have some other plugins (pdf-reader) and extensions (ghostery, adblock) installed and they are working fine.
FF keeps me asking to install the plugin. I install it, and it's not there - asking me to install it. And so on. Could keep me busy for hours ;-(
Please help! Thanks :)

There's an addon you can install called Nightly Tester Tools that will disable the addon compatibility check in Firefox. Download it, and it will appear in the, uh, "Firefox" menu (upper left corner). There should be an option that says "force addon compatibility". Check that, then restart Firefox.
There is an option under the about:config page that will turn it off, but I forgot the command. And you DON'T want to mess with the about:config page unless you know what you're doing.
For Java, I found a better answer than "download Palemoon". Here's what I did, don't know if it will work for you.
There are two versions of Java that are safe currently: Java Version 7 Update 7, and Java Version 6 Update 35. I was having a problem getting Firefox to recognize 7 u7, but it could recognize 6 u35 just fine. So here's what I did:
1) I went to Oracle's website and downloaded the JRE directly from them, NOT from Firefox when it says to install the addon. Here is their site: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
Make sure you download the JRE, and NOT the JDK, unless you plan on making your own Java apps.
2) Download the following:
Java 7 u 7 (32 bit)
Java 7 u 7 (64 bit)
Java 6 u 35 (32 bit)
Install both Java 7's first, then install Java 6 u 35.
3) When you restart Firefox, go to your addons page and see which Java plugin it is pointing to. If it is pointing to version 6 u 35, then you are having the same problem as me, and I would just keep version 6 u 35. It should work and be compatible with Firefox, cause it worked for me.
If it says it is pointing to Java 7 u 7, then you can uninstall version 6 u 35. I would keep the 64 bit version of 7 u7 just in case you have a 64 bit browser like IE that you want to use it with. But that's what finally worked for me: download all three and throw them at Firefox and hope one of them sticks.
Hope that helps.

• Add-ons Manager / Extensions / Text-to-Speech doesn't work

I use Natural Reader, a text-to-speech program.
It won't let me highlight the text in Firefox Add-ons, so Natural Reader can read it to me.
Some pages like snopes and enviroreporter . . . I have found that I need to disable javascript in order to make the text highlightable . . . you go into about:config . . . and double-click to disable: javascript.enabled
So, I was looking into this, and found the NoScript plugin that has javascript disabled by default, and all other scripts on a page - this looks good for added security, so I will use it . . .
But now I see this in Add-ons, where I can't highlight the text. Any idea what's going on? Thx.

RightToClick . . . I don't see this in my Add-ons bar, or when I right click a page
. . . the description for an Add-on is still unhighlightable . . . even if I right-click it with this Add-on . . . should I be able to highlight it? Or does it have some other way to make itself un-copyable, besides javascript?
