Add Personal Holidays to iCal
Hello. I'm trying to set up iCal for the first time, and I was wondering if there were ways to add holidays without just downloading or creating another calendar?
Let me explain. Since I'm a college student, I have my classes all set up on there and they happen every week for the most part right? Well, on Labor Day Sept. 6, I won't have any of those classes. Is there someway I can tell iCal that Sept. 6 is Labor Day without just creating an all-day event? And can I tell iCal that my normal classes aren't happening that day? I would also like to be able to this for my Thanksgiving break.
Is there a way I could make the notes visible on the calendar view or maybe assign things in the to do list to specific events on my calendar?
Not that I'm aware of.
What I do is have 1 calendar per class. Each class get's it's own color then (makes tracking easy. Do a recurring event to show when the class meets, then make a new event for each assignment / project. Because it's in that calendar / color you know that assignment belongs to that class.
Alternatively, use more detailed event titles. For example "World Economics -- Research Paper". Then you know the class is World Economics and the project type, without even opening the event.
Cheers.

Hi
How do you add UK holiday events in iCal please?
ThanksYou blokes should know that Apple has not maintained those published calendars since about 2007, so they may be out of date.
There is a UK holiday calendar at the bottom of this site:

I'm using the US holiday calendar at this site, and can say it is quite comprehensive -- many religious and patriotic holidays. I find it much better than the calendar published by Apple. You may want to check it out. -

How or where can I find the US holidays to add to iCal?
CricketkrisHey Cricketkris,
Great question. The following resource includes a subscription calendar for US holidays:
Apple - Downloads - iCal Calendars - US Holiday Calendar
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/calendars/usholidaycalendar.html
If you are looking for other calendars, including international calendars, please refer to this resource:
Apple - Downloads - Mac OS X - iCal Calendars
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/calendars/
Cheers!

I don't see United States holidays in my 2013 calendar. I tend to plan in advance, and would like to have the holidays in my calendar. I thought that would be automatic with ical, but am new to Mac. They were automatic with Outlook. Thanks!
You can download from Apple. Apple publishes one for the US and there are many others.
In Calendar, go to Help menu, then "Find Calendar Subscriptions..."
It is a little hard to find, but I sorted the available calendars by Alphabet and then found US Holiday Calendar on page 7. -

Don't use this calendar.... Apple has not updated it since 2010.
I subscribe to the US Holidays calendar published by Marcus Yoo and Rob Craver here:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/holidays.html
Best part is that it contains both patriotic and religious holidays, and they keep it up to date! Subscribing means that as they update it, the new entries are pushed to your calendar -- very cool! I've subscribed to it on all my devices (Mac, iPhone and iPad) -

How do I add US holidays to my iCal?
From here:
To add holidays to your calendar:
On iCal's menu bar, choose Calendar / Find Subscriptions...
You will be taken to a page on Apple's website that lists shared calendars.
For US Holidays, click here. For other countries you will have to browse around some in the Alphabetical tab.
When you have found the calendar you want to add to iCal, click the Download button.
You will be taken back to iCal. Click Subscribe.
The next dialog shows options for the calendar. Two of them are important:
If you have MobileMe and share your calendar with iDevices and/or other Macs, change Location from On My Mac to Calendars. (If this doesn't work, make sure that Calendar sharing is checked on the MobileMe preference pane.)
Change Auto-refresh to Every week. This will make sure that you have holidays on your calendar for the years ahead.
Click OK. The holidays will be added to iCal.
In addition to holiday calendars, you can also subscribe to US sports team schedules, US movie releases, moon phases and several other types of calendar.

A tip: if you download and add a calendar, make sure you add it as a new calendar. Do not import it into an existing calendar, because you won't be able to unpick it later. -

View holidays in iCal 5.0.3
sorry may be a dup...
how do I view holidays in iCal 5.0.3???Apple does not comment on their design decisions, and certainly won't do so here. If you want to comment to Apple, you can do so via their feedback page:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
The only way to "resolve" the issue as of right now is to use some other calendar application. But even BusyCal, the most common iCal alternative, doesn't display more than one month at a time in the sidebar.
Regards.
