Add printer hangs

When I click on the add printer button within the Print & Fax utility, the add printer window pops up but is unresponsive and cannot be closed without rebooting. I previously had a networked printer added but it wasn't connecting so I deleted it. Since then I cannot get the add printer function to work. Please help.

I have finally been able to get the add printer utility to stop hanging. I had previously installed a Brother printer through a print server and it would never connect, so I deleted it and that's when the trouble began. I disconnected the print server from the network and reloaded the Brother drivers on the Mac and all seems to be well now.
I will try to add the Brother printer again, this time using an Airport Express. I hope there's no new surprises lurking...

• Can't add printer connected to other mac on network

I've got a new Epson Photo Stylus R380 connected via usb to my desktop G4. That G4 is hard wired to my airport express network. I've got the printer drivers, utilities installed on the desktop G4 and the printer works just fine. Now I'd like to print from my powerbook to the Epson but I don't see it when I try to add it. I do see the HP printer that is plugged directly into the airport express. I was able to print to my previous epson color printer that was plugged into my desktop G4 so I don't know what I am missing. Please help. Do I need appletalk on or off? What other setting should I check?
thanks.

The description of your problem sounds like you have had no other printers hanging off a usb port of this desktop G4 for awhile. Is it possible that you disabled printer sharing on your desktop G4 at some point in time in the past, a la post-Epson-color-printer? Doublecheck your desktop G4's system preferences > sharing > services and make sure that printer sharing is still checked on.
If that was indeed the problem, then on the powerbook, when you ⌘p, in the subsequent print dialog window, one of those pulldown menus should have something about "shared printers" that you can add this usb printer hanging off your G4 desktop.

• Print Utility crashes when attempting to add printer connected to an XP box

Hello, I am able to connect to the shared folders on the XP box and the XP box is able to connect to my Mac, but when I try to add the printer to my Mac that is connected to the XP box, Print Utility hangs.
This is how far I get:
1. Add printer
2. Select Windows Printing
3. Select the XP box
4. Enter Username and Password <- crashes after I press ok
4a. Sometimes returns "Unable to connect to server with the provided password and username. Error 256."
4b. I'm positive I've entered the correct Windows username - it's the name and password for when you have to log in, right?
I'm running 10.4.8

On your Windows machine locate your printer icon. Right-click it to open the contextual menu and select Properties. You should see a Security tab. Is the "Everyone" group listed? If not try adding it and allow "Everyone" to print.
Hope this helps! bill

• Cannot add wireless printer - can't get past "Add Printer"

Months ago I set up my Photosmart C4700 printer with my home wifi and MacBook Pro according to the HP instructions. All saw each other fine, the computer recognized the printer. But printing was terrible. Long hangs, half sheets, jobs queued for hours then later spat out in the middle of the night. All this has been reported elsewhere.
This morning I uninstalled all the HP software, upgraded to OSX 10.6.7 using Software Update and attempted to re-add the printer without using any of the HP code. Given the printer itself was previously set up to be on my wireless LAN, I attempted to add the printer from the MacBook over wifi without relying on the USB cable.
The add printer dialogue lists the Photosmart C4700 as a "Bonjour" printer (good). But when I select it and click "Add", I *very* briefly see a dropdown dialog entitled "Determining Discoverable Options" which disappears in less than half a second. I'm left back at the Add Printer screen. I can repeat this over and over with exactly the same result.
Any input on how to proceed would be most appreciated!

To print from an iPAD using the Lexmark S300 series, you need to download the LexPrint app from this link: LexPrint
Hope this helps.

• Cannot add printer to Linux server

I have a printer connected to a Linux box by USB. I can configure and print to it from Windows 8 (using \\IP-address\queue-name). I can't add it as an IP printer in Mavericks. I've tried IPP and LPD. In any case, I get the pop-up
Unable to verify the printer on your network.
Unable to connect to "192.168.0.4" due to an error.
When I proceed to create the printer anyway, printing hangs in the queue.
I've tried to find a solution by searching the Net. The only thing I can think that's different in my situation is that my MacBook is on a different subnet that the Linux box. Of course, I can access the Linux box over my home network using ssh. The network topology is such that my MacBook is on wireless going to a range extender which goes to the wireless router then to an ethernet switch that the Linux box is connected two. The two sides of the wireless router are on different subnets.
What can I check to get this going using the IP type? Or, can I configure it as a Windows printer (the Add printer dialog doesn't find the printer and I can't see how to manually add it using the address and name directly).
Thanks for your help.

What printer model is it? I ask, because often manufacturers provide USB-only drivers for USB-only printers - for Macs, that is. In other words, if you know about CUPS from using Macs and linux, the manufacturers actually provide drivers with the comm protocol built-in, rather than make use of the USB "backend" available from CUPS. These are called "monolithic" drivers - they don't follow the unix/linux/CUPS concept of making use of already-provided modules.

• [SOLVED] CUPS Web interface crash when trying to Add Printer

I've used the web interface @ http://localhost:631
After a recent upgrade, when clicking Add Printer under the Admin tab, I enter the root username and password, and then the web interface "crashes". In Chromium, I get the "Aw, snap!" blue screen. In FireFox it just hangs forever.
In /var/log/cups/error_log I see
E [28/Nov/2009:14:46:19 -0500] Unable to set ACLs on root certificate "/var/run/cups/certs/0" - Operation not supported
I've tried removing /var/run/cups and it is recreated when cups is restarted, but same error. I haven't tried adding a printer via commandline because it looks difficult.
I've tried removing cups with pacman, and deleting /etc/cups/ /var/run/cups /usr/share/cups and anything else I could find and reinstalling, but no luck.
CUPS 1.4.2-1
perms on /var/run/cups 755 root:lp
perms on /var/run/cups/certs 511 daemon:sys
CUPSD running as root
/etc/cups/cups
root is a member of sys group
root is not a member of lp group (does this matter?)
Anyone have this problem?

Still having this problem. Even installed x86-64 Arch in a VM to see if a clean install works. NOPE!

• HP Officejet Pro 8610 Add Printer issue on Mac

I purchased the HP Officejet Pro 8610 and cannot get it successfully set up on my MacBook Pro (operating OS X 10.7.5). During the "Add Printer" phase, I receive the following error message: "The software for this printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printer's manufacturer for the latest software".
I've downloaded and completed the steps up to this point by using the link from install CD (HP-Officejet-Pro-8610_v12.32.0.dmg) and by downloading after unsuccessfully troubleshooting from the HP webite (HP-Officejet-Pro_8610_12.32.0-2.dmg).
Can you please assist in determing what my next step should be?

Hi,
First reboot your Mac, then click the Apple icon and select Software Update.
From the listed app store click the Store menu and then on Repload Page.
Be sure to install any listed HP or Apple update.
Once you are done, open Print & Scan and try adding the printer again.
May you see any difference?

• The Add Printer button on the eprintcenter website on my screen is not working.

I just registerd on the eprintcenter.com site and now I am trying to click on the +Add Printer button/icon to add my printer and it is not working. I have tried it in all different web browsers and it doesn't take me anywhere on any of the browsers. Sometimes I get the "javascript:void(0)" message down in the left hand bottom portion of my screen when my mouse goes over that button. What is wrong? Is it your site or my computer?

I'm having same problem

• How to add Print button on Webhelp in Robohelp 10?

Can someone please provide step-by-step instructions to add Print button on Webhelp. I'm currently using Robohelp 10. I saw some suggestions using javascript in skin, but there isn't a step-by-step procedure available.
I have been seraching for this from past many days. It'd be of great help to me. Thanks!

Thank you very much for your quick reply. It was really helpful. However, I still can't see the button the webhelp output.
1. Created a new skin
2. In the new skin, I added this print button and followed all steps explained (adding inline javascript and calling the function in the action tab under onClick, etc)
3. I could see the preview of this being perfectly fine.
4. But, when I generated the output by compiling it again, I could not see the changes I made in the webhelp
4. I am thinking I am missing a crucial step. Is the new webhelp using the new skin? How to know this?
5. I carried out all the steps as explained, except this "Don't forget to tick the Print button in the second page of the wizard". Could you please let me know which wizard this is and where is the check box to tick the print button?
I am eagerly waiting for your answer. Thanks!

• How do I connect a Lexmark x6570 printer to my iMac wirelessly? The basic user guides are not helping me and the add printer is not finding my printer...

How do you connect a lexmark x6570 printer to an iMac wirelessly? The basic user manuals are not helpful as the printer is not showing up when using the add printer function. I my printer is working fine wirelessly with my windows laptop so it appears to be functioning fine. This is my first time using an Apple at home...
Thank you.

Hello,
I am using a Mac with this router. Any ideas how I can set it up to print wireless. Im not a tech person so this gets confusing for me sometimes.
Thanks!

• Canon LBP6000 print driver - no printer appears in the 'add printer' section' I have installed Mac CAPT Ve r340 and nothing shows.r

I was having problems printing from my Canon LBP6000. Print jobs remained held in the queue. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Mac CAPT Ve r340 driver from Canon's website, no improvement. The printer works fine with my Windows laptop.
I found an option to remove all printers from the Print preferences section. I can't remember how I did this, but all printers were removed. I reinstalled the above driver, but now in the 'print & scan' - 'add printer' section, I have no printer options. And no idea how to get printer options. So very open to advice.
Thanks
T.

The ability to see the LBP6000 in the Add Printer view is not reliant on the printer driver but the USB cable. If you have the printers USB cable connected directly to the Mac, as opposed to having it connected to the Windows computer you mention or to some sort of USB hub, then it should appear in the Add Printer > Default view. If it does not show, then try another USB cable. You can also open System Information on the Mac and select the USB section in the left column. Then in the top right pane you will see all the USB busses on the Mac and the LBP should be seen under one of the busses if the USB cable is okay.
With regards to the action to remove all printers, I would bet that you performed a reset of the printing system.

• Wireless MacBook Pro to wired C7280: Deleted offline printer queue, can't add printer again

I posted about a year and a half ago about connectivity problems with our C7280 all-in-one, and PrintDoc gave me some great suggestions to get me back on line again--thanks again!
I've had problems off-and-on again, but I've been able to get back again until now, and I can't get the usual tricks to work.
Here's our set-up:
Printer: Photosmart C7280 All-in-One, connected to network via Ethernet, static IP address 192.168.1.200 (confirmed via printer's display as well as the printer's web page)
Router: Verizon/Actiontec MI424-WR (Verizon FiOS) with
* Ethernet ports
* 802.11b and 11g with WPA encryption
My Laptop: MacBook Pro, Mac OS 10.6.8, wireless connection
Every now and then, the printer goes off-line. (Our cordless phones and our WiFi occasionally hit the same channels, and our printer hiccups seem to happen after WiFi hiccups. My theory is that a WiFi hiccup somehow screws up the print queues, possibly if it happens in the middle of a print job. Haven't been able to prove it, though.) I'm usually able to fix it by cycling power on the printer and/or resetting the print system (by right-clicking the list of printers in the Print & Fax window).
That's not working this time. I reset the print system, but when I try to add a printer, I don't see my printer in the Add Printer dialog.
I've tried various combinations of:
Cycling power on the printer (sometimes by cycling the power button off and on, sometimes by unplugging the power cord while powered on, and sometimes by unplugging the power cord while powered off)
Resetting the print system again (sometimes by itself, sometimes followed by log off/on, sometimes followed by reboot)
Powering down the Mac, then the printer, then the router, then powering them back up in reverse order.
But I still can't see my printer in the Add Printer dialog.
Somewhere along the way, I tried following the Mac OS 10.6-10.7 instructions from here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02205477&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3204785#N86...
...but Solution 1 assumes that the printer queue is still there; unfortunately, I'd already reset the print system by then.
Since I'm using OS 10.6 which already has the printer drivers built in, I'm assuming that I can't uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers as in older versions of Mac OS X. (Er, right?)
The long-term solution (if my theory is right) is to get cordless phones that don't use the WiFi frequencies :-) In the meantime, are there any tricks I'm missing?

Today I tried to "add printer" again...and lo and behold, there it was!
I wish I could tell you what fixed the problem, but I haven't got a clue.

Sorry for late reply i was not at work
I have a default set excel is still throwing error. Interestingly winword , powerpoint and publisher are working fine. I am able to print from all office applications except Excel.
Probably excel behaves differently from other office applications.
Probably it is a bug in excel
Workaround : Log on to a system once using newly created account then runas excel using this account then print works fine.
It means something in user profile should be configure to run excel print operation. Could you please somebody help what I need to configure in user profile that makes print operation success?

You would need to get the IP address of your printer then manually add a network print queue.
To get the IP address, on the control panel of your printer, press on Setup > Network Setup > TCP/IP > View/Set IP address.
