Add (+) printer in Sys Prefs Print & Fax makes Print Setup Utility crash!

Something is wrong with System Preferences Print & Fax pane, or something else... From there, I can't add any new printers. When you click + below the list, it's supposed to launch printer setup utility? But it does nothing what so ever.. or that's what I thought until I looked in Console to see what's going on (if anything), and the console reports that the printer setup utility crashed. It launches fine directly from Utilities. What gives?
Here is the crashlog report, if anyone can make sense of it:

Well I figured out how to run Printer Setup Repair to try that route. So far these results:

  • Printer does not show in Rendezvous in Preinter Setup Utility

I am using a G4 Ti 15" laptop usually connected wirelessly to an AirPort Extreme BS. Also connected to that BS is a desktop (ethernet), cable modem, and a HP LaserJet 2200 printer. If I connected the printer directly to the laptop, it prints. However, if I try to print wirelessly, it doed not work. In the Printer Setup Utility when I try to add a printer and select Rendezvous, the printer does not showup in the available list.

    Erven,
Have you followed these instructions from the help pages of Printer Setup Utility?
    Connecting to a network printer
If your computer is connected to a network, you can use the printers in your local area, including those that use Bonjour (formerly Rendezvous), AppleTalk, and OpenDirectory.
Open a document to print, and then choose File > Print.
Choose Add Printer from the Printer pop-up menu, select the printer in the dialog that appears, and then click Add.
The dialog lists shared, Bonjour, AppleTalk, and Open Directory printers. You may need to wait a short while before your printer appears.
If you don't see your printer, click More Printers, choose your printer's type from the pop-up menu in the dialog that appears, select the printer, and then click Add.
If the specific type of printer you're using is listed, choose that type. For example, if you're using an Epson AppleTalk printer, you may be able to choose Epson AppleTalk.
If you choose AppleTalk, another pop-up menu appears that lets you choose the AppleTalk zone for the printer.
When you select your printer in the Add Printer or More Printers dialog, Mac OS X finds the printer's driver and adds the printer to the Printer pop-up menu. If Mac OS X cannot the printer driver, "Driver not Installed" or "Gimp-print" appears in the model pop-up menu.
If you still cannot find the printer, it may be an IP printer, and you will need to follow the instructions for how to set up an IP printer.
Usually, your computer can detect whether a printer has special accessories installed, such as additional paper trays, extra memory, or a duplex unit. If it can't, a dialog appears that lets you specify them. Make sure the settings in that dialog accurately reflect your printer's installed accessories so you can take full advantage of them.

  • Printer setup utility crashes

I am running 10.4.8 on my iMac G5. Up until a few days ago I was successfully using two network printers that I have in my home. One is HP Photosmart 3310. Suddenly it stopped working, and I uninstalled and reinstalled and updated the software and drivers countless times. I kept getting a "printer not supported" message. Now when I try to install ANY printer I get the following message midway through the process in printer setup utility:
The application printer setup utility quit unexpectedly.
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected
Click reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
    Can somebody help me please??

I think you left out some details-
The Photosmart 3310 is a USB printer, so to make it a network printer you are sharing it? From a Mac?
Here are some generic troubleshooting steps to try:
    Repair permissions (Disk Utility).
Delete Print Prefs - search for (File>Find) files that start with com.apple.print and delete them all and reboot.
Reset Printing System (new in Tiger) - In Printer Setup, click this menu item found just above Quit Printer Setup.
If there is a downloadable Combination Updater from Apple, use it to re-Update OS X.
Try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.
Use a Disk Utility like Disk Warrior to repair the HD, or start from the Install DVD to use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive.

  • Printer Setup Utility Crashes every time I try to open it.

If I cant install printers, then I cant use 10.5. This is a production machine at a print shop. Any ideas?

Printer Setup Utility no longer exists in Leopard. All printer driver functions are handled by the Print & Fax preference pane in System Preferences.

That's the way I have always set up my printers. I did not even know there was another way. Well, now there isn't anymore.
I just found that app on my Tiger. Never noticed it, never used it.
Interesting. I guess it was simply a matter of removing duplication.
I can only assume Leopard forgot to delete it in this case, or somehow it got installed after Leopard was installed.

  • Printer Setup Utility Crashing on Launch. Please Help!

    Hi all,
I am trying to set up my sister's iBook to print on my home network. I'm using a fuji xerox docuprint C525A and my first step was to obtain the latest drivers from fuji xerox.
However when I go to add the printer in printer setup utility the program unexpectedly quits. Obviously this is making it pretty much impossible to add the printer.
The iBook is running 10.3.9 so far the only step I've taken to try and fix the problem has been to repair disk permissions. This unfortunatey hasn't helped.
I would greatly appreciate any advice for further troubleshooting.
    Thanks
    -Tim

    Hi Tim,
I don't see any obvious problem with the results that you have shown. The logical links look okay and the PrintCore program is present and has the about the right size. Nevertheless, the results that you obtained a few days ago suggest that there is a problem somewhere in the PrintCore.framework. I would suggest that you replace this framework and see if Printer Setup Utility works correctly.
If you want to do that, I think the safest thing to do is to get the most current version of the framework and you can do that by loading it from the OS X 10.3.9 combo update. Here are the basic steps to follow:
    - You will need to install an app called Pacifist.
    - You will also need to download Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9. After you download this update, open its disk image and extract the .pkg file to your desktop.
    - Start Pacifist and then use it to open the .pkg file from the combo update.
    - Use the Search command in Pacifist to search for PrintCore.framework (use lower and upper case as shown). After Pacifist finds and highlights this framework, click the Install button.
That should do it. The framework on your computer will be replaced with framework from the combo update. I hope that this fixes your problem.

  • I have a trial version on PS Elements 9 - Printing on HP Officejet-get fax not printer

When I try to print from my trial version of Photoshop & Premier Elements 9 on my HP Officejet 6500 Wireless the fax screen appears instead of the printer.  The printer is set correctly on the default page however in the advanced setting is defaults to the fax and I can not find a way to change it.

Upon further analysis i found the Unidiv Printer Driver GPD filename is pointed to the hpfax_print.gpd
    How do I change this?

  • Yet another freaky printing problem: 10.3.8 and Printer Setup Utility

I'm hoping some really smart people can help me out here -- I'm not as good at Mac troubleshooting as I need to be!
I purchased Tiger a few weeks ago and the upgrade went fine and I was able to print, but then suddenly I can't any more. I have a PowerBook G4, running 10.3.8 and a HP 2710xi, which is a wireless printer (not sure of the proper term for this).
The symptoms: iCal crashes when I hit cmd-P. Other programs also crash upon printing. Some programs will bring up the print dialog, but it freezes up at that point. I tried printing to a PDF in Microsoft Word, and that crashed it. This problem persists in other user accounts.
Additional problem: Printer Setup Utility crashes whenever I hit the "add" button to add a printer. I have the crash reporter information if anyone wants it. Can't add any printer at this point.
What I've tried: I uninstalled the old software from HP and reinstalled new software. The HP installer can't finish running since it gets hung up by the Printer Setup Utility. I installed print-only drivers from HP. Same problem. I tried plugging the printer in to the USB to see if that makes a difference. Same problem.
Printer Setup Utility is recognizing my printer in all forms: as USB, Bonjour, and HP IP Printing. I just can't add it due to the program crashing.
Further troubleshooting: I ran all the maintenance and permissions repairs in Onyx. I used most of the diagnostic and repair tools in Printer Setup Repair, including Reset the printing system and deleting printer preferences. I reinstalled the 10.3.8 update from Apple's website.
I'm not sure what my next step should be: Do I reinstall the whole operating system? From my review of this board, lots of other people are having problems with Printer Setup Utility in Tiger.
Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.

Have you tried starting up with the Install DVD, and then using Disk Utility (in the menus at the top, NOT in the installer) to repair the hard drive?
If you're going to show us any errors, use the Console to look at cups error log. Paste any line that starts with E, plus the 3 lines before it (they tell you what was happening).
If none of this is fruitful, yes, reinstalling is the next step.

  • HT3387 Default printer not used despite selecting it in Sys Pref Print & Fax. I have tried all of the suggestions including Inspector Window formatting. The docs were originally created in AppleWorks

I have scoured these pages and cannot find a solution (is there one?) to the problem I have in printing to the default printer that I selected in Print & Fax. The documents were originally created in Appleworks (preceded iWorks/Pages) and "converted" to Pages by simply dragging them to a blank Pages template. Of course, I can select the desired printer in the Print dialog window but this can get tedious when printing multiple items. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This bug has existed for as long as Pages has, since iWork '05, & still has not been fixed.
The best workaround I've heard of is to create a desktop printer & drag the files to it to print.
And, most important, leave feedback for Apple, making sure you classify it as a bug. You can find it under the Pages menu > Provide Pages Feedback.

  • Print & Fax prefs & any and all print commands unresponsive

    Hi all,
Newb here. I have a 17" mbp running Leopard 10.5.2. I'm networked to a Konica Printer at work and I sent a very large job across. The job was incorrect so I canceled it. That's when the trouble started. Now I can't even open the print dialog in ANY program, nor can I open "print & fax" preferences in sys prefs.
I've opened the activity monitor and cupsd is just devouring my cpu. I've tried to kill it and restart it in terminal, but honestly, I'm don't really know what I'm doing, nor what the core problem is. Any help is appreciated...is there any more info that you need from me to help troubleshoot?
    Thank you!

    Hi John,
Thanks for your suggestions. Just so you know, I'm not a "console & terminal" guy. I'm willing to try any of your suggestions, but you're going to have to walk me thru...
Opened console and there seems to be a constant stream of "cupsd" errors. Every 10sec actually.
    Here's the system log entry:
"Dec 28 09:10:46 MacPro com.apple.launchd[1] (org.cups.cupsd[86732]): Job appears to have crashed: Segmentation fault
Dec 28 09:10:46 MacPro com.apple.launchd[1] (org.cups.cupsd): Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds

If you'd like to see the entire Diagnostic report, let me know.
    What would you suggest now?

  • YES! How to make PRINT QUOTAS WORK with 10.4

How to make PRINT QUOTAS WORK in 10.4
After struggling for quite some time, I finally found a pretty simple way to make print quotas work.
First, I’ll tell you our setup. We have 3 different computer centers with a variety of eMacs and new Intel iMacs, all clients are running 10.4.8, and each of those 3 centers has its own HP Laserjet 4200 printer. Our dual G5 server is running Server v.10.4.8. Client computers and printers have static IP addresses. All clients are bound to the server with the standard WorkGroup Manager/ LDAPv3 Directory Access scheme - such that all students login to the clients with their network username/password to mount their home directory on the client.
Next, I’ll tell you what does not work. IF YOU WANT PRINT QUOTAS TO WORK, you cannot use Workgroup Manager to assign a printer to any managed user account, user group, or computer group. Why? Because when you go to a client, and Show Info on the printer that is being pushed by Workgroup Manager, you’ll see that the queue name is not the queue that you’ve setup in Server Admin. Instead, you’ll see the queue name is “MCX” or something along those lines. Even if you manually edit the Workgroup print preference file that is being pushed to clients, it still will not work.
Drawbacks of my technique: In my case, students will see all 3 printers (1 from each lab) available to them no matter which lab they are in. Not the best, but for now I think it’ll be worth it to be able to control wasteful printing. Students may be able to move/delete the preference file (see below), but they’ll only be hurting themselves, as they won’t have any printers at all then.
Okay, here’s how I did it:
    1. If you have setup any printers to be pushed out via Workgroup Manager’s preference enforcement to individual users, usergroups, or computer groups, turn those preferences off and leave them off.
    2. Delete any existing printers in your Printer Setup Utility and/or Server Admin. Add and setup a new printer queue using the Server Admin> Print service. I added the printer through the Server Admin application, not Printer Setup Utility (may not matter). However, I did go into that latter utility to set the model of the printer. Now, back in Server Admin, edit the printer queue to turn on these services IPP, LPR (bonjour off), and of course check off the enforce quotas box. (No student Windows clients, so I didn’t tinker with SMB print service). I went ahead and specified the standard cover sheet – it will be handy while troubleshooting.
    3. In Workgroup Manager, select the users that you want to enforce quotas upon, go to the Printer Quota tab (not the preference pane) and, in my case, I selected All Queues and specified a quota, and clicked Save.
    4. Delete all printers that appear in the Printer Setup Utility from each client computer (I know, UGH).
    5. For all network users, you need to edit a preference file and put it into each user’s home directory. That file is “com.apple.print.favorites.plist” and as you guessed, it needs to go into the Library> Preferences folder of every one of your network users’ home directories. Now, the content of that file is crucial… what it should show is the name of the queue(s) you created in Server Admin above, and be immediately followed by an “@” and the address of the server that is hosting that queue. For example, my queue’s name is TCStudentQ and the server’s address is student.mydomain.org… so my preference file has this entry: [email protected]. If you have more than one queue, you’ll have more entries. Be sure that the network user has at least Read level access under Group or Others. I’d recommend making the server System account the Owner of the file, and be sure to lock the file so the users can’t easily trash it. If you don’t know how to create this file in the first place, what you can do is go to a client computer, and log into the client with a dummy network account. Then open Printer Setup Utility, and you should see the queue you created in step 2. Add that printer, and then the file will be created in your dummy account’s home directory under Library> Preferences. Now you can use that file to distribute to other user’s folders… but don’t forget that each user needs Read level access.
    6. That’s it. Works for me. When they exceed the quota, all that spits out is the cover page. It’d be nice if there was a quota monitor utility on the client side so users can see how many pages they have remaining and when the quota will automatically reset. I plan to start the quota on a Monday morning and go on a weekly duration. Not sure what a good starting point is… perhaps 25 pages every school week.
    7. Hey Apple Computer, Inc. Server Developers & Project Managers, I truly hope you’re reading this and can explain why print quotas don’t function as you have documented and advertised. I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I’ve spent way too much time discovering this workaround, and I know it will help thousands of others with the same problem. I can see where your Print Quota system breaks down, and I think you need to fix these issues or at least document them. Don’t forget to fix serious 10.4 Server bugs before leaving it behind for 10.5 Server – many of us will continue using 10.4 Server for at least another year or two.

    David,
Your assumption that I didn't read the documentation is incorrect. I read that 10.4 documentation over and over - followed it to the letter to no avail. Perhaps it was updated in the last few weeks? So, do you have a fully operable printer quota system in conjunction with a managed computer or user group that has a managed printer pushed to the group via Workgroup Manager? I can push a managed printer to a managed group without a problem, but the quotas won't be enforced unless I use the workaround above and cut Workgroup Manager's managed/pushed printer out of the picture.
I know this is a user-to-user forum - however, I'm also aware that Apple tech support often chime in here, so it doesn't hurt to post a message to them in the context of a larger posting about a 'known issue'. I have used the server feedback form... hasn't seemed to me to be very helpful in the past.

I have purchased a new printer.  It is the same make as my old printer.  How do I remove the old printer from my Mac?

you could see if that make of printer has an uninstaller (may come with the installer)
or go to preferences, print and fax, and press the minus key   (  -   ) which should maybe remove it. Or ,do a a find, then type in the make of printer, and anything that looks like a printer driver for that make, well, maybe it's gotta go

  • In large PDF files my cursor moves around the page at warp speed. It does not seem to make any difference if I slow it down with Sys Prefs. This is not only in preview but also other programs to open PDFs.

In large PDF files the cursor moves at warp speed with a mind of it's own, I've tried slowing it down in Sys Pref with no luck. On small files cursor action is normal. This happens in Safari, Preview and other programs that use PDF files. Sorry to say this does not seem to be a new problem with 7.# I've had it with prvevious versions of operating system Right now I'm using a Apple wireless mouse and key board. Using the USB keyboard and mouse the same problem does not go away.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Built-in Fax and printing to default paper tray

    Gentleones,
I have a HP LJ1320n which is connected to my iMac. The problem is that incoming faxes, when printed, cause the printer to request paper and the only way to make the printer continue is to go press the green button on the printer.
I cannot find anything anywhere which would allow me to tell the built-in faxing capability of 10.4.10 the default paper tray or page size. None of the options in printer setup affect the behavior. It always makes me press the green button.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Bill

    hi again!
just had a look at my print n share app on the ipad. select your document, tap the printer icon on the top right and a new Print option box will open with all the print options, the paper tray option is at the bottom (I have attached a screenshot below) :

  • HP Photosmart 7520 printer window displays "Loading" can't copy/scan/fax from printer.

Our power went out approximately five days ago.  Once the power came back on I unplugged our computer and printer, replugged them in tried to restart each.  We are set up wireless....through our landline phone service and satelite TV.  The PC works fine, I can print from the PC with the HP Photosmart 7520 printer and it prints fine.  However, the printer does not display any functions in the printer screen.  I am unable to get it to come back so that I can copy/scan/fax.  The printer window just keeps displaying the word "Loading" and the circle keeps going around on the printer screen (for 3 hours today.....same thing before....I keep shutting the printer down and retrying to no avail)  We did get a message of some error "syntec" not connected.  We have no idea what that is.  Everything is connected exactly how it was prior to our power going out.  The printer is just over a year old.  We seem to keep having issues of various kinds with this printer. We are not very tech savy but, can usually get things accomplished on our PC and we have used the printer often to copy/scan/fax.  Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Welcome back to the HP Community @logger2 !
I saw your post about how ever since your power went out, the display on the printer will not function properly, causing you to not be able to scan, copy, or fax. My best suggestion would be to try another power reset (below), and if the screen still does not work properly, to contact us directly to see what your replacement options are for another printer.
    Reset Instructions:
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
Make sure the printer is plugged in directly to the wall outlet, avoiding power bars and surge protectors. This ensures the printer is receiving full power.

  • How to make "Utility" button in Printer Setup Utility available

There, i add a printer in the Printer Setup Utility and select it. i want to open printer utility, but the "Utility"
button in Printer Setup Utility is dimmed. In addition,
"Printer\Configure printer" in the Printer Setup Utility menu is also dimmed.
How to make "Utility" button in Printer Setup Utility available?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jiong,
That button is to acess the printer utility for that particular printer, not all printers come with a utility. If you have the disk that came with your printer, you can see if it has a Macintosh driver, if it does then it mimght have the utility with it. It's pretty hard to run the utility on its own, its burried somewhere in the system so that's why you have that menu item. You can alternatively go on the internet and download the latest driver, which might have a utility. All the utility will do will give you options to check nozzle patterns, alighnement, ink tank levels, and cleaning options - just mimnor maintenence junk, non-essentials, etc. I think Tiger just comes with a whole heap of generic drivers for different printer lines, can't say for sure.
I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you have a relatively old printer.
    Hope that helps
