Add Ram toan Imac G5

Hi,
I'm trying to add 2GB memory to my iMac. Found new one on eBay,
2GB DDR2 SDRAM PC2-4200 (533MHz) ECC, placed it in the only slot available,
which had a 512 MB in it. The iMac did not recognize the 2 GB RAM.
What could possibly be wrong? Beside the RAM being bad.
Ed

Hi Ed,
When I checked other vendors' site, the PC2-4200 is showing for your G5. Crucial knows faster RAM will clock back so that may be a way for them to limit inventory.
These are the two vendors from whom I've bought all our Mac RAM for over a decade:
Data Memory Systems (New Hampshire):

  • ADD RAM To Imac

    Hello,
I would like to add RAM to my Imac, could I buy it with Apple ?
    Thks for helping

You can usually ask the local Apple Store about this; they'll ask you a few questions and determine if they can upgrade it for you, and how much it'll cost.
If you are thinking of performing this upgrade yourself, then you'll want to identify which iMac you have, as some models are easy to open up and access available RAM slots, and some are not.  Recent 21.5" iMac systems don't have user-upgradable RAM, for instance.
Use  > About This Mac to see which model of Mac you have.

  • Can i add RAM to new iMac 21 after purchase?

I'm about to buy a new iMac 21" and wanted to know if I can add RAM later if I want to.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can, but it's very difficult and you will void warranty, so it's better not to do that and buy the iMac with the amount of memory you think you will need

  • Can I buy 2 x 4gb RAM to add to the current 8gb RAM in iMac 2013 27inch?

The iMac 27inch has 4 ram slots, it already has 2 filled with 4gb of RAM in.  Can I buy the same brand of RAM and put it into the other slots?
What's the exact model number of the RAM in 27 iMacs 2013?  Could there be problems, as they may not quite be a perfect pair?  Also how much could I sell my current iMacs memory for?

Yes you can add RAM to fill up those other 2 slots. Buy it from Crucial.com. It does not have to be the same brand but it has to be the same specs. Crucial will sell you the same spec RAM as what is in there already.

  • Adding RAM to iMac

    hi
i ordered new imac 27"  a couple of weeks ago which is hopefully going to arrive over next week or so.
I'm planning to upgrade the RAM pretty soon after for intensive apps like PS.
Is it possible to add ram to the existing ram, or is it a bad idea to mix them?
I was going to buy this kit to add to the computer.
    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=5F1B022FA5CA7304
It would be good to have as much ram as possible, so is it possible to leave the 2x 4GB and add the 16gb in the remaining 2x slots? = 24GB
or should i just order 4x 8GB and remove the original Apple ram.
    thanks

I have just (in the last 10 mins) installed that exact same kit into my iMac.
    I had a 27 inch i7 3.4Ghz with 16Gb installed (factory fit), and I installed an extra 16Gb so now at 32GB.
I ordered with the 16GB so I would have two free slots for the extra 16GB.
If I had ordered the 8GB standard model like you I would have to remove the 2 x 4GB cards and not use them.
I don't think there is any issue with mixing memory sizes.
The crucial website is very good at recommending the memory you need, and it says that the extra 16Gb is OK.
Go for it, 24GB will be a big improvement.

  • Value of upgraded RAM in imac 27" quad core

    Friends,
I have a 27" imac i7 quad core on order. I do a fair amount of editing in FCE and Aperture. Does anyone have any sense of whether there would be a noticeable difference in processing speed if I upgrade the RAM to 12gb, versus 8gb or 4gb? Are there any RAM benchmarks out there?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Well, yes, mixing & matching is fine, your system will run (of course, that assumes you have the correct kind of RAM ).
Mac memory architecture supports dual-channel memory access. Depending on the model (G5, Intel Core/Core2 Duo/Quad Core), it uses 64-bit data paths or 128-bit paths. If the DIMMS are matched, you get the benefit of the maximum speed of dual-channel access. If the DIMMS are not matched the system has to revert to asymmetric mode, which is slower. How much slower depends on all sorts of things.
Understand, that's not a complete technical explanation, but it hopefully makes the essential point. More RAM trumps matched DIMMS. However, you made a significant investment in your Core i7 iMac, if you're going to add RAM, why not buy matched DIMMS?

  • How do I remove an old iPod device from my list of 5 so I can add my new iMac to my iTunes account?

I see that iTunes will only sync 5 devices to my iTunes account. One of my 5 is an old iPod that has not worked for years. How do I delete it so I can add my new iMac to my iTunes account?

iTunes Authorizations are limited to 5 Computers and 10 devices total. If you've already reached the 5 computer threshold, removing the iPod won't do any good. Nevertheless, here's some more info:

  • Add RAM to MacBook Pro 13 Inch Late 2011

Is it okay if I added RAM to my MacBook? now my RAM is 6GB. this will make my macbook more heat or not because it need to process big RAM right?

Yes, it's perfectly OK to add RAM to your machine. It can use up to 16GB. There may be a minuscule increase in operating temperatures after going from 4GB to 6GB, but nothing significant.

  • I want to increase the RAM of iMac?

    Hi,
I want to increase the RAM of iMac 27"(Late 2013) to 32GB, is it possible to do the same?
If yes, then please let me know the steps to do it.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Ankush Madan

Yes,  you can upgrade it to 32GB, most on this forum recommend two vendors OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial. If you are in the USA use  OWC, if you are anywhere else then Crucial. BTW here is s link to show how easy it is to install:

    Good luck.

  • Can you add ram to a Macbook5,2

Can I add ram to this macbook to be able to make it more compatible and be able to open applications that I can't without upgrading my software?
Is It worth it? How much Ram would I have to add for Lion software? Is that possible?
I am not in the position for a new computer and this one is good, it is just frustrating that some application that friends send to me do not open.
Thanks for you help and support.

The Model 5,2 (Early 2009, 2.0GHz Model Only) can use 6gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM. The model 5,2 (Mid 2009, 2.13GHz Model Only) can use 6gb of 800mhz PC2-6400 RAM

I'm possibly wrong here but I suspect opening a brand new MBP to add parts yourself will void the warranty.  It is probably in the small print.  I certainly would not risk it for an expensive Apple product.
Some (Windows) laptops have easy access to memory and disk slots that do not necessitate taking the complete back cover off.  However, Apple does not make life easy for you.
However, if you are going for a 'used' machine it is probably worth a try.
Not possibly, definitely wrong, Ram and Hard Drive are considered user replaceable and will not void the warranty if changed.
