Add ssd to mac mini

Hi guys I'd want eventually add a new ssd to my mac mini late 2012 (base version) and can i ask apple to do that paying their service or i have to do it myself?
can i bring an ssd to an apple store (i was going to buy a samsung 840 evo 500 gb ssd)and ask them to install it into my mac mini?and eventually the cost for that?
thanx

Don't think an Apple Store will do that work, but if you call around you might find an Authorized Apple Service Provider that will. see > Apple - Find Locations

  • Upgrading 2nd 512GB SSD into Mac Mini

    Hi all,
I'm looking at purchasing the Mac Mini, with just 1x256GB Flash Storage.
Is it possible if I buy the above, and I install myself another SSD of 512GB inside the other slot of the Mac Mini?
My reason for doing so is because buying 2x256GB Flash Storage straight from apple is so much costier and I could have more storage (512 vs 256gb) if I buy a third party SSD.
Hope anyone can give their wise words on this.
    Thanks in advance!

This is helpful man, really appreciate it!
Now i need not worry about the fusion thingy part!
However, I still need some wise knowledge about my result Mac Mini set-up.
My  purchase from Apple will be like this:
Mac Mini w OS X Server
    2.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    2x1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    4GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
As you guys might have noticed, I chose everything to be the lowest except the processor (2.6GHz Quad Core).
This is because I will be upgrading it using third parties product.
    Ownself DIY changing the parts:
Ram - from stock 2x2GB to my local store 2x8GB (a lot lot cheaper)
Drive - from stock 2x1TB Serial ATA Drive to Crucial M500 480GB SATA 2.5" 7mm SSD
    Ideal Mac Mini:
    2.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    1x1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm + Crucial M500 480GB SSD
    2x8GB RAM
Anyone noticed anything wrong or will I get any problems in this result end set-up?
    Comments are really well-appreciated!!

  • SSD upgrade Mac Mini 5,2. Preparation of SSD prior to installation

    Mac Mini 5,2
    i7, 2.7 Ghz
    8 Gb RAM 1333
    Mac OS X
    HDD failure requiring replacement.
I am experiencing an HDD failure, I have decided to replace the traditional HDD with a SSD.  I am comfortable with the process of replacing the drive itself, but I would like to know what the appropriate steps are to preapre the SSD prior to installation.
    I have regular TM backups.
Question is:  What is the most efficient process to get my machine back up and running?
Is there a need to install Mac OS X on the SSD prior to replacement, or can this be done after the replacement is complete?
Thank you for your help, in advance.
    WG

Before you install the SSD, check the vendor’s process for firmware updates. Does the vendor only provide a Windows firmware updater, or additionally, a downloadable Linux .iso that permits firmware updates on OS X?
Is the firmware update process itself data destructive. Even if it is claimed otherwise, a solid backup or two (clone of your drive) are good safety precautions. If your SSD is a couple of firmware updates behind, you may find a dual-step firmware update process where the first step is destructive, and the second is not.
Last summer, before I installed my OCZ Vertex 4 in my mini, I realized that the firmware update process was two-phase as described above. I had a PC tower next to my desk. The side panel came off and a length of SATA cable connected to the SSD. Ran the firmware updater on Windows. I have since acquired an external USB-SATA drive cradle. OCZ does have a more modern OS X firmware update solution now.
I clean installed OS X onto the SSD from a USB stick after the mini drive surgery. Works perfectly.

  • SSD Upgrade Mac Mini (Late 2012)

I have a Mac Mini (Late 2012) quad i7, 16gb ram, and 1tb HD. I would like to upgrade to an SSD, I currently have a 500GB Samsung Evo ready to install, but read that if you install a third party SSD, Yosemite does not boot. I got the 1TB hard drive replaced yesterday (1/5/15) due to a crash and do not want to suffer from another failure.
Should I purchase an OEM Apple SSD - found some on eBay 128gb Toshiba for $57-$70/ 256gb Toshiba $240

I know with kext signing and TRIM, other SSD's would not be compatible.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

First of all, Apple knows what was originally in your Mini and if it wasn't an SSD, I doubt they'd cover it, so if replacing the factory HD with anything voids your warranty, that would too. Moreover, it is being sold with an operating system on it which may be in violation of Apple's EULA. On the other hand, depending on which Samsung EVO you have, you probably should read this and this before you decide.

  • Installing SSD in Mac mini (mid 2009)

    Hi
I want to buy a new SSD Drive to my Mac Mini ( the installed drive is dead already)
    I thought about this model
    SanDisk SDSSDP-128G-G25
what do you recommend ? do you think it will be compatible ?

From the  > About This Mac menu, share what is stated for the present OS X version, CPU and installed memory. Further, run the System Information app from /Applications/Utilities. Using the following guide, share the revision of the EFI firmware presently installed. If you have the EFI firmware v1.2 installed, your mini can support 8GB RAM instead of the 4GB Apple ceiling without this firmware release. Here is a link for memory upgrades for this machine.
You still have a SATA II 3Gbps internal storage controller. Regardless of the SSD you choose, you will need a professional video of the (advanced difficulty) installation process for older Mac minis.
The SanDisk SDSSDP-128G-G25 is a SATA III drive that can fall back to SATA I and II. SanDisk provides a version 1.0 Windows-only (.exe) SSD Toolkit firmware update utliity. The last firmware update was Oct. 2012. SanDisk did not appear to offer a bootable Linux .iso firmware update solution for Macs. This is a 9.5 mm thick drive. I would pass on this drive as no provision for Mac installed firmware updates is evident, or even manufacturer stated Mac compatibility.
I installed a 128GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD into my 2011 Mac mini last summer. Caught a special and got it for $99, though presently $135 and higher if you can find one in stock. Newegg is out right now, but shows 506 **** reviews. This manufacture is committed to Mac and PC firmware support solutions, with copious documentation and recent (Jan/2013) firmware update. The drive is 7mm and has a 5 year warranty. This is what I would recommend because it is in constant use, fast, and flawless. Here is a review.
Whichever drive you choose, you need some assurance it will have Mac firmware update support, and not require a PC only solution. The drive height must be 9.5 mm or less for the Mac mini.

  • What is a good mic to add to my Mac mini?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and I wand to add a mic to my Mac mini so I can use the dictation & speech application. Since there is no built in audio input, I want to add an external mic in the audio line in minijack. I checked the Apple Store and did not find any. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

The Audio input port is Line level and it will not pickup the week signal from an un-amplified Microphone or Guitar Pickup.

  • Installed SSD in Mac Mini to split as bootcamp drive, why can't I format the original drive?

I just bought a Mac Mini. Before I even booted it up I installed a 256 GB SSD along side the stock 1 GB hard drive, and reinstalled Mac OS and Windows 8 on the new drive using bootcamp. Everything is working fine, but I'd like to reformat the stock drive as one big NTFS partition so I can use it as shared storage between the OSes.
When I view the drives in Apple's Disk Utility, it shows the following partitions:
    256 GB SSD:
SSD - Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (A silly name for my new Mac OS partition)
Bootcamp - NTFS (A silly name for my Windows 8 partition)
    1TB Apple HDD
Macintosh HD - Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (The original Mac OS install from the factory)
When I view the drives in Windows Disk Manager, it shows the following partitions:Disk 0 (1TB hard drive)
200 MB Healthy (EFI System Partition)
930 GB HFS Healthy (Primary Partition)
    620 MB Healthy (Primary Partition)
    Disk 1 (256 GB SSD)
200 MB Healthy (GPT Protective Partition)
(E:) 118 GB HFS Healthy (Primary Partition)
    620 MB Healthy (Primary Partition)
BOOTCAMP (C:) 119 GB NTFS Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Parition)
When I try to erase the 1 TB drive in Apple's Disk Utility, it gives me an error saying "Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn't unmount disk". Is my old drive still holding something important, like a master boot record or whatever the modern equivalent to that is? Should I use Windows to try to erase the 1 TB drive? I'm pretty confident I'm booting into the copy of Mac OS on the new SSD, because the bootcamp startup screen shows the OS partition on the old drive as well, and I'm selecting the new one. The EFI partition on the old drive seems suspicious to me, is bootcamp using this or something?

  • Correct Superdrive Caddy/Optibay for SSD in Mac Mini 2009

Hi there, I'm looking at getting an SSD for my Mac Mini '09, but could really use some help with a couple of things.
Firstly, from what I understand the Superdrive in Mac Mini's are 12.7mm. Correct?
Secondly—since/if it is the larger 12.7mm—can I therefore use either a 9.5mm or 12.7mm caddy to hold the SSD, or should I ensure it is 12.7mm. I only ask as there seems to be a lot more 9.5mm caddys about and I thought I would get the smaller option so I could re-use it in a Macbook Pro.
Thirdly, there are a lot of caddys about on eBay and I wondered if they are compatible with Minis. I wasn't sure if the design is rather generic between PC and Macs.
Thank you any answer-ers. I have looked on the google, but couldn't find anything that quite set my mind at ease...

  • Lion and lion server add on for Mac Mini Server

I bought the Lion OS and Lion Server add on for my Mac Mini Server which runs Snow Leopard Server. When trying to install the Lion,
it requests the Add on to be available, however the add on requests the Lion to be already installed before it can be downlaoded through
App store. I made my purchases over the phone as neither was available in stores anymore. Egg and chiken dilema.
I do not have a physical DVD with the Snow Leopard (Client) to follow some of the instructions I have read in the communities. Any
    workaround?

For the Mini you must have Lion client installed to purchase the Server. You can download Lion from the Mini while it's running Snow Leopard. Once Lion is installed you should then be able to purchase the Server.
Unlike past OS X Server releases the bulk of the software is within the Lion client. The Server is more or less a type of add-on to provide all the Server utilities and support. It's a relatively small download compared to the client.

  • Mac mini 2011 display going black

I just got my new core i7 + SSD 2011 Mac mini. I noticed during initialization of Lion and during a reinstall of Lion that my screen would flash to black for a second or two. A few days after installing Lion I still get this random flash a black a few times throughout my sessions. It usually only does it 2 or three times withing 10 minutes of turning on the the computer, then it seems to be fine. One time it flashed a few times and then the display went all distorted and pixelated. To fix it I ended up having to disconnect my 24" Cinema display and reconnect it. This whole display issue is really annoying.
I found this so I hope Apple is working to fix this issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15843631#15843631

Shutdown the Mini, turn off the display, disconnect and reconnect all of your power and display connections ensuring that they are fully seated and snug.
It could also just be that the display going to sleep and then rewaking.
    1. Go to: System Preference / Energy Saver and check to see if your Display Sleep slider didn't maybe get set to under 3 minutes.
    2. Go to: System Preferences / Exposé & Spaces / Exposé and see if there isn't a Hot Corner set to "Put Display to Sleep" that you pointer might be going to.

  • Mac Mini HDD to SDD?

    Hey folks,
New to the forum... used the search feature and found this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1957930&start=60&tstart=45
Applies to MBAs, but can it apply to Mac Mini?
I am planning to buy a Mac Mini with HDD and will soon migrate to SSD when the price decreases. So, can I change from HDD to SSD with Mac Mini?
    Let me know!

As long as you are using the same kind of drive (PATA or SATA) that the mini came with, you should have no major issues. The problem with using a SSD is that it has a more limited read/write lifespan compared to a regular rotating media hard drive. There are ways to avoid this, first and foremost by having enough memory (RAM) to not require a bunch of page-ins and psge-outs. I think there may be other differences in how Mac OS X is installed with an SSD, but I'm not sure if that is something automated once the installer sees what kind of drive it's being installed to. Other applications which normally use disk cache, like browsers, can be configured not to in many cases. This will also save drive lifespan.

  • What options for making a mac mini wireless?

Is the oinly way of doing this getting an airport card installed into the mac mini? is there any usb or thernet style wireless device that would allow the mac mini to access out wifi adsl router?
    best
    tommy banana

    Tommy Banana,
It would be helpful to know what type of wireless system you are running now that you want the Mac Mini to join.
Do you have an Airport Extreme Base Station?
or may an Airport Express Base Station?
If you have either of the above, then you could make just about any computer join your network by adding another Airport Express Base Station and have it joining the network in WDS mode. The WDS mode will allow an ethernet connection between the Mac Mini and the Airport Express Base Station thus giving you a wireless connection to your network so to speak. No need for an internal wireless card which isn't easy to add on the Mac Mini without splitting the case.
Here are instructions for setting up Airport Base Stations in WDS mode.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107454
You Mac Mini would be hooked up like the Remote Base Station in the bottom of the photo. The photo shows an Extreme but the Express will do the same.
