Add texture brush strokes without altering color??

I want to paint texture into an image without adding or changing color.
The best way to explain my goal is to visit this website with very fine work by Mark Wainer.
http://markwainer.com/Artist.asp?ArtistID=32140&Akey=88KMSY3K
My own website is www.mdiimaging.com
He has used Buzz, as have I, to change photos into watercolor like images, now defunct and taken over by Topaz software, who now market Simplify in place of BUZZ.
After running the filter, he has added brush strokes to add texture without altering any color—just adding a texture looking like impasto or thick brush strokes.
I have searched everywhere and view lots of video but cannot find a technique to get the result I want.
I am sure there is way to do this, probably with brushes in CS6 and am frustrated with my being unable to find or create a way to achieve this effect.
Can you help??
Maybe you have a tutorial or video that can teach me, or you could direct me to a different source that can help
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

    laur,
It sounds as if the Layer were permanently converted to Grayscale or something.
If no brighter solution comes up, you may try the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • How do i add filter to just brush strokes and paint fill not pencil.

Sorry it is kind of hard to explain in the description.
What i want to know is if i can pretty much just select the brush strokes and paint fill on a layer and have the pencil lines left alone.
I want to filter, then blur the brush strokes and paint fill on the layer but keep the pencil lines sharp, i have been doing paint fill and brush stroked on a different layer than the pencil lines but this takes ages because i have to draw the picture out twice everytime using the brush strokes to go along the pencil lines so i can fill them in with color, if i could blur them on same layer without effecting pencil lines then i could just fill the pencil lines with paint bucket instead of redarwing the lines with brush tool if this makes sence.
Here is a picture to show what im trying to achieve
The pencil lines are on a different layer to brush strokes

if you convert to a movieclip (right click>convert to symbol>movieclip) whatever you want to filter, you can filter it independent of other objects.

Thanks for that info! Even in my time answering questions on iMovie Discussion Group, I never had a good understanding of when and how Optimize Movie came into play. I always would import as Optimized and Large Size and figured that was good enough. But knowing you got much, much more flexibility doing it the way you describe gives me a much better understanding of the different routes you can take into the Event Library.

  • I would like to change the colour of bars in a chart without losing the underlying default texture associated with my chosen theme. None of the 3D textured fills offered in "Chart Colors" match the textured fill of the theme. Any suggestions?

I would like to change the colour of bars in a chart without losing the underlying default texture associated with my chosen theme. None of the 3D textured fills offered in "Chart Colors" match the textured fill of the theme. Any suggestions?

Thanks Gary, but no, that does not work. First of all, I can't select each bar individually. When I click on one bar, all three bars are selected.
When I use "inspector > graphic" I have 5 fill options: none, color, gradient, image, tinted image. The default selection for the theme I'm using is image. What I would like to use for my charts is the same image that this theme uses for table headers. It has the same texture as the chart, but a different colour. Using anything but image or tinted image removes the texture from the fill.
I have found I can do one of two things. I can select tinted image from the fill selections in "inspector > graphic" or I can select 2D Image Fills from "inspector > chart > chart colors". The first choice does not allow me to match the table header colour because it only allows me to apply a tint to the existing colour and adjust its opacity. The existing colour has too much influence on the fill, so I can't find an RGB adjustment that will match the table header colour. The image selections from "inspector > chart > chart colors" do not quite match the colour or the texture. Again, I can try to tint the image, but I still can't get it to match and the texture is not the same anyway.
The image I want to use obviously exists in the software as it is an attribute of the theme, but for some reason is inaccessible. The other angle I have tried is to edit the theme, but I can't figure out how to do that either.

  • Scale a Paint's "path" without distorting the Brush "strokes"?

Anyway to scale a Paint Brush "stroke's" "path" along only one axis without distorting the brush strokes?

Besides having no idea what you're trying to say, I don't think you're considering the problem.
Here's the same issue, solved with regards lines and their strokes distorting:
    scale a line, not it's outline/stroke...
    That's a particularly cool trick.
But I don't see anything similarly possible with Paint Brush based "strokes".
Please, consider that this is what I'm "painting" the line with, so I'd like the circles (dots) to not distort into ovals when scaling the path in only one dimension, see my answer at bottom:
Small Circles (dots) on a path instead of dashes?

  • Using "Filters" how can I activate Artistic, Brush Strokes, Texture, etc.

Please help.  I am a novice at using PS.
I want to change some photos to give it a true impressionistic, watercolor, neon-like look.  When I scroll down the Filter menu, how do I activate "Artistic, Brush Strokes, Texture, etc."?  They are grey and inactive.
Am I going about this in a wrong way?  Is there another tool I can use?  Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

Are you saying there is no way to do it with a 16-bit image?  I would also like to use these effects on a certain image, particular the gun shown in this product.  I want to make it look a lot more attractive, but I too have not been able to utilize these important Photoshop effects.  There has to be a way to do this, there's always a way in the world of computers.

  • Brush paint without texture but good with eraser?

    Hi
I'm equiped as following (all drivers and software are up to date) :
    Photoshop CS5
    Windows 7 64
    Wacom Intuos 3
    Nvidia GForce GTX 285
I'm following Derek Photoshop CS5 One on One Mastery training in Lynda.com
I just begin to learn the brush painting Chapter.
At the beginning we have to donwload the beautiful M Brushes Series.
It's happened that I download those brushes when I was using the eraser tool.
From that time, I got beautiful textured brushes with the eraser and ugly and lavish brushes with the tool brush.
It seems like brush and eraser are inversed.
I don't understand wath to do to get back beautiful textured brushes with the tool brush.
    Is someone can help me?
    Appellelaterre

Choose the Brush Tool, then click Window - Brush, click on Brush Tip Shape, and review all the settings, as well as the various dynamics.
If all else fails, you could try clicking the little fly-out menu in the BRUSH panel and choosing Clear Brush Controls.

  • Graphic Style that adds stroke without changing fill?

I'd like to assign a graphic style that adds to the existing style. For example, I need to add the same stroke to various objects that  have different fills. Can I do that with a Graphic Style? I know I can group the object and add the style to the group, but this complicates the structure of the file. I would rather the stroke was just added to the object itself. I looked at "additive styles", but don't think they are what I'm looking for.
    Thanks,

Thanks, Jean-Claude. You just made my job much easier. I used to think I knew Illustrator, until I met some of the people on this forum.

  • CS5 screws up brush strokes drawn in CS4

I have a drawing that was created in CS4 and which uses many brush strokes created with an Intuos4 pen. When I open the file in CS5, everything looks OK, but if I try to make ANY edit to the stroke - whether changing color or moving or re-orienting an anchor point, the complete character of the brush stroke is destroyed.
I might add that often, these strokes had a specified thickness defined with their brush that was later altered with the strokes thickness setting (usually made thinner). But since no such corruption would ever take place in CS4 when making such trivial edits, I can only assume there is a problem with the way CS5 handles this kind of altered brush stroke.
    Here is a screen shot:

    Monika,
If I change the Options of selected object for one particular stroke in CS4, the same one I showed in the screen shot, here is what happens. The specifications were for it to be 1.7 points. I had manually specified .3 point in the path stroke settings. If I make the specifications .3 point, the stroke loses all its character and is barely visible. I think the expressiveness of the stroke may have to do with the fact that I made this manual tweak.
Also, I have SEVERAL THOUSAND such strokes in this particular file, and they were based on a variety of brush designs and were all manually overriden in this way (not one at a time though; I just kept drawing with the manual override and it maintained it).
I cannot imagine how many weeks it would take me to revisit them and tweak them to fit new brush behaviors (if this is not a CS5 bug). I really want to take this and other files into CS5 because the performance of everything else is so much better.
I hope someone will chime in who knows what's going on between CS4 and CS5 in this regard and has a solution. I don't want to resort to using Expand Appearance or Outline Paths to solve this - I want to maintain their integrity as brush strokes at least until I am completely done drawing...

  • Brush strokes show in history but not reflected on mask

I have CS4 Extended, Dell Precision M0, WinXP 64bit and 20GB of Ram (overkill I know). This issue happens most often in the 32bit version of PS which I need to use for certain filters. It also happens in the 64bit version but takes longer to manifest itself.
When I apply a filter to a duplicate layer and then add a layer mask OR of I add an adjustment layer and try to fine tune the effect by painting on the mask, the brush strokes show up in history but they have no affect on the mask. It typically happens mostly on very large files such as those from my 5DMKII but also happens if I've added several layers and masks to smaller files.
As a workaround, I can make selections and fill the area on the mask with black and it works. This is time consuming as you can imagine.
The brush problem is only related to masks. I can create a new layer, for instance, and paint on it with black or any color.
I've also had this issue when trying to use the spot removal tool or when cloning. Again...very large files.
I've entered every imaginable query and haven't had any luck! I'm hoping someone here has a clue.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. I sure wish it were that simple but no....that is not the problem. I'm an advanced PS user and know the workings of a computer well. I've been through every imagineable possibility and now am wondering if my video card isn't up to the task of redrawing the brush strokes on huge files. I'm grasping at straws.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Can you smooth out a brush stroke?

I am using an animated brush stroke to provide the Indiana Jones look on top of a picture of a google map for a trip I took. I can draw the brush stroke and set a key frame on the "end" attribute so that it paints on the stroke, but the stroke is not as smooth as I would like it and I can't find a way to edit the vertices of the brush stroke and can't apply the smoother to it either. Once you draw a brush stroke, can you smooth it out? Also, since I drew the brush stroke on top of my layer, is there a way to put a shadow underneath the brush stroke?
    Thanks in advance!

I'd use a shape layer and the Trim Paths path operation rather than a paint stroke.
There's a link to a video tutorial showing how to do this in the
"Alter shapes with path operations" section of After Effects Help on the Web.
But, if you are using a paint stroke, then you can decrease the value of the Spacing property to make the strokes more smooth and continuous. See the
"Brushes and the Brushes panel" section of After Effects Help on the Web.
[Edit: Oh, I just realized that just meant "smooth" as in having fewer and less sharp turns. For this, you should copy the Path property of the paint stroke, paste it into the Position property of a temporary dummy layer, run the Smoother on that motion path, copy the motion path, and then paste that into your paint path. If you just want to edit the path a little bit, then you can copy it into a mask path and use the mask path editing tools and techniques. David Wigforss has a tip about this
on this page. The basic thing to take away from this is that you can copy and paste between the various kinds of paths and use the tools for one to help you with the other. (See
"Create a mask or shape from a motion path".)]
Regarding the shadow: There are many ways to do this. The first that comes to my mind for the paint stroke is to duplicate the stroke, make it a dark grey, reduce its opacity, and offset its position slightly from the other stroke. (Each paint stroke has its own Transform properties, so you can just go into the duplicate stroke's Transform property group and add a little to its Position values.) If you decide to go with the shape layer option, you could do essentially the same thing or you could use a Drop Shadow
    layer style.

  • "UNDO" & "BACKWARD" not working for brush strokes?

After making three consecutive brush strokes in my image:
Click on Undo once, History list backs up one step, but last stroke remains on screen. Press Undo again (Redo) and History list returns to last position, last stroke is still on screen. Click Undo again, History list backs up one step, but now brush stroke disappears as it should.
Or, after clicking Undo the first time, the brush stroke will disappear if I apply another stroke or enter a command, e.g. add new layer.
After making three consecutive brush strokes:
Use Backwards command, the History list backs up one step, but brush stroke remains on screen. Use Backwards command a second time, History list backs up another step, the last two brush strokes disappear from screen. Use Backwards a third time, History list backs up another step (now 3 steps total), and the first brush stroke disappears as it should.
These commands work fine when creating three consecutive layers, then undoing or moving backwards.
I am using CS 5.1 for Mac running OS Lion 10.7.4. This problem occurs using either a trackball, Wacom Intuos4 tablet or keyboard shortcuts. Can this be a screen-draw bug in the brush tool? Thanks.

I still don't know what Vertical Sync pertains to relative to OpenGL Settings. Anyone know? Thanks.
Only Adobe knows the exact implementation under the covers, but what it conceptually does is prevent display updates in the middle of a scan.
Keep in mind that what you see on the screen is sent pixel by pixel, row by row, to the monitor - much as it was done in the time of CRT displays and scanning electron beams, even though today most  have LCDs.
Once the last pixel at the bottom has been sent, there is a time called the "vertical sync" time where nothing is sent, before the "scan" starts again from the top.
Setting the "Vertical Sync" option is supposed to limit display updates to only occur only during the vertical sync time.
As Conroy has said, this generally can make a display seem cleaner, as when moving something around you might see part of it moved more than another part without Vertical Sync.  This is called "tearing" (as in "tearing a piece of paper in two and having the two parts not line up").
By definition the Vertical Sync option setting causes a difference in the timing and the sequence of display operations, and that may be working around a bug in the display driver on your system.  It sounds kind of far-fetched, but it happens more than you might think.  Adobe provides all these options to help work around problems.

  • Erasing portions of brush strokes that have effects

I have made some brush strokes and applied the 'gaussian blur' effect to them. I want to erase the portions of the brushstroke that extend over the outline of the drawing. I have tried the 'expand appearance' command but after doing so it will not let me use the eraser on the selected object. Not sure what to do! Very frustrated- I would appreciate any help, thanks.

Basically, you're thinking of Illustrator brushes as if they were raster or pixel based like they are in Photoshop. They are not. You can not simply erase the "overspray" areas outside the keyline. That's just not how Illustrator brushes work.
You would be better served by either A) using shapes and filling them with a gradient rather than using brushes at all. Or B) add a clipping mask to hide the overspray appearance of the brushes.
The help files will explain Clipping Masks further. Using the brush+mask method will easily double or triple the amount of work needed to color any piece. Not to mention, eventually cause the app to get a bit slower becuase it will have to redraw all teh brush strokes as you add new ones. It's just not an efficient way of working much of the time if you want hard edges on shapes.
Essentially, you're expecting raster-based results in a vector-based application. You need to reevaluate your workflow.
Of course, you could always take your vector keyline into Photoshop and paint color there in the manner you are attempting. That's what Photoshop does.

  • How to turn on brush pressure without tablet

    hello,
how i turn on brush pressure without tablet ot tech screen?
    this is my problem:
    "pressure" is disabled.
how i turn on pressure without tablet?

What brush pressure does is dynamically alter the stroke as it is drawn. You may be able to alter the stroke after it is drawn.  Since you aren't describing what sort of alterations you want, there is no way for anyone to provide alternatives.
There is no substitute for the dynamic ability to alter strokes as you draw them, a tablet is required for that ability. But a similar appearance AFTER the stroke is drawn is entirely possible.
