Add to Aperture

Is there a way to modify Mail.app so that i can choose ADD TO APERTURE rather than to iPhoto?
Also, can I do the same thing from Quicklook?
I wish to use Aperture...

You can do something very similar with Automator and save it as a workflow, invoke it from your contextual menu.
As to specifically hacking Mail or Quicklook best to post those on the Mail and/or Finder forums.

  • Mail, Add To Aperture

Has anyone whose upgraded to Mavericks noticed if Mail has added an Add To Aperture feature for saving/importing photos from Mail directly into Aperture?
Similar to the Add To iPhoto feature that already exists in Mountain Lion?

Actually, since iPhoto and Aperture now share the same library, adding the photo to iPhoto by definition makes the photo available under Aperture as well.
But only, if you have opened the Aperture Library as the current iPhoto Library. If you are using iPhot and aperture on different libraries, to be able to compare two photo libraries opened at the same time, you are out of luck.
In Mail, there is a Save pull down menu. Did Mavericks add Aperture?
I don't see these menus any more in Mail.app in Mavericks, only the contextual menu I have shown in the screenshot. To save an attachment, I ctrl-click the attachment. And then I can "Export to iPhoto", but not to the current Aperture library - unless it happens to be the iPhoto library as well, as Rex Ross pointed out.

  • Apple Mail - "Add to Aperture" needed.

An omission in Mail? It would be nice to see an option, when receiving photos or videos to "Add to Aperture" as well as "Add to iPhoto." Seems Aperture 3 is relegated to being the stepchild of iPhoto with this half-hearted integration.

I myself absolutely don't feel the need to import images that people mail to me, why not just keep them in the Finder?
A great many serious and pro photographers will agree with you.
    But.
Now that Aperture 3 is being heavily marketed as an app for folks outgrowing iPhoto then such folks will expect that features they take for granted in iPhoto to be also present in Aperture.
I think you might be able to make a service with Automator that will do the job for you. Otherwise:
Aperture menu -> Provide Aperture Feedback

  • When I click "add vault" aperture quits unexpectedly. Can anyone help?

When I click "add vault" aperture quits unexpectedly. Can anyone help?
Thank you in advance for any help. It is greatly appreciated.

Do you get a crash report? if so cut and paste the first 50 lines of the report here.
Are you really using Aperture 2 on Lion?
You can try making a new empty library and see if the ad vault command works with the new library. If that fails try making a new user on your system log in as that user and run Aperture on a new library and try the command. Doing these two things will help determine if the problem is system wide or if it is something in your account/library.

  • How can I add Apple Aperture which was bought on DVD to my App Store inventory?

Some time ago I have bought Apple Aperture the classical way (in a box with a DVD). Is there a way to add this "physical license" to my list of App Store purchases?
    Cheers,
    - Ralf

No. As noted both ways are separate.
Originally the MAS would recognize Apple software installed by the 'old' way - I have iWork installed and it was recognized - but - that ability was removed after several monts. What you buy as physical and as digital are separate.

  • Add/delete aperture plug-ins?

I installed a plug-in called Border FX, so I could type text onto a photo; but it doesn't work, so I would like to delete it but can't find way to do that.
    Anyone know how?
Also -- any good plug-ins for this?

    To answer your questions:
    1. I got Border FX from it's site, latest version
    2. Tried it again. It still doesn't work
    3. I'm not interested in seeing if your claims are backed up but perhaps you might want to add my data to your track record info.
    4. What program? It was a toss up between latest Photoshop and Painter 12 -- I had an old, old Photoshop that was quite suitable for me but now no longer works under Mac OS 10.7/Lion. I got Painter 12. It meets my core needs (adding text, having layers) and opens up some fun directions I've been interested in. I'll add, though, that it crashes now and then and I hope/expect they will deal with that. If I was in a more pressured business situation I'd recommend Photoshop.

  • Aperture 3.5.1 suddenly unable to render images for the external plugins?

Today when I started to create HDR images using the Photomatix plugin, the dialog: 'Editing Error This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format.' appeared.  The exact same set of images was processed by the exact same plugin yesterday.  Subsequently I tried editing the images with other plugins receiving the same error message.  Similarly I was unable to use Photoshop as the external editor on the images.  I also reimported the images with the same results.  Might I add that Aperture is perfectly able to export the images as TIFF files. It would appear that my copy of Aperture is no longer able to work with plugins.  How is this possible when nothing else has changed?

Thanks.  Yah, been messing around and found it.  Didn't realise it was IPTC data so I never hit the drop down to see what was under it.  Dropped one clanger in that I deleted the Copyright Notice from the dropdown as I didn't want to find it stamped it twice as all the images get it on import.  Because I deselected it though, it actually deleted what was there.  Easy enough to fix of course but, IIRC if you select the Lift / Stamp to lift all the keywords, I seem to recall it stamps them again if you inadvertently re-stamp an image you've already done.
I try to keep this as uncomplicated as possible, could never decide whether to go with title or caption, I guess it matters neither way, unless doing this professionally in which case I guess there are IPTC conventions.

  • Getting 5D Mark II Video From Aperture to iPad/iPhone

I’m looking for some help on my workflow.  I’d also like to know if I’m actually just missing something in the way iTunes handles syncing video from an Aperture library to an iPad or iPhone.  Video, and specifically video from my 5D Mark II, is what’s causing me trouble.  I think the actual issue is the manner in which iTunes handles the 5D’s video, but maybe you can fill in some of the blanks for me, and offer a suggestion or two.
    CURRENT WORKFLOW
I’m ingesting to an Aperture library via (1) Photo Stream (for still images from my iPhone 4S and iPad “3”), (2) PhotoSync for videos from the same two iOS devices (it’s an app that allows WiFi transfer from device to laptop, etc.), and (3) via CF card from the 5D to the laptop, over a FireWire reader (stills and video).  Once everything’s in Aperture, I add metadata, assign ratings, add keywords, make adjustments, and set up Smart Albums to make it easy to pick what to sync to my iOS devices (the two listed above, plus an iPhone 4 and original iPad for others in my household).
    ITUNES SYNC ERRORS
I use iTunes to select the Smart Albums and whatever else I want to sync from Aperture, and sync over WiFi.  In choosing the photos, the box is ticked to include videos.  Several videos sync without trouble, but it appears that they are limited to those shot on an iPhone or iPad.  The videos that came from the 5D throw an iTunes sync error, that basically says:  “Some of the videos in your iTunes library, including the video [file name], were not copied to the iPad “[name of iPad]” because they cannot be played on this iPad.”  A disclosure triangle below that text reveals the full list of files suffering this fate.
There are two problems with that error message.  First, the 5D videos are not actually in my iTunes library -- they’re in an Aperture library, just passing through iTunes on their way to one or more of the iPhones or iPads.  Second, the videos actually do play just fine on the iOS devices.  I know this because a friend suggested I test it by transferring the same 5D video file that would not sync over to the iPad a different way.  I used Dropbox to get the file onto the iPad, and once there, it played just fine.
    REQUEST FOR HELP
So, first, is this behavior as it should be?  I’d think that a video that plays fine on the device, and fine on the Mac, should have no trouble syncing from the Mac to the device., but perhaps you can explain why I’ve got that wrong.  Second, am I right to figure that iTunes is the culprit here?  If so, what exactly is it doing?  Third, and assuming there is no fix for what’s happening, what’s the best (most automated) way to get those videos onto the iPad?  I keep the stills and the videos all together, organized chronologically on hard drive, and I’d like to keep it that way.  I’d also really prefer leaving the 5D videos in Aperture.
The best I’ve been able to even sketch out mentally is to try a Smart Folder in Finder that can identify and distinguish the videos from the 5D vs., say, an iPhone video.  Then that smart folder somehow gets synced to something that lands on the iPad.  That’s just a loose concept; I’m not sure how to execute it, and I’m not sure how much trouble it would be.  If you can help me figure out how to do this, or if you have a more elegant solution, I’ll be in your debt.
Thanks for making it this far, too!

I got exactly the same problem (same config. and workflow but the wifi sync).
I manage to workarround it, as you anticipated, by a Smart Folder where I filter the 5D videos like this:
    "Add Rule" -> "Aperture Metadata"
"Aperture: [Aperture Filename] [Is not empty an does not contain] [MVI_]"
Please, Apple guys, consider our concerns as a bug in the "Liberal Arts / Tech" cross. Yes, I know it could yield a way to introduce piracy video to the photo/video viewer on iOS, but we need a way to do it with our own video creations without workarrounds.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Aperture Keywords From iPhoto

    1) I have imported my iPhoto Library
    2) I realize that iPhoto keywords are distinct from apeture keywords and I need to select photos by keywords.
    a) I have selected the old iphoto keyword via the smart setting library. The old photos appear. I then add new aperture keyword. (ie Sally Smith). This is easy.
    b) Then I delete the old iPhoto keyword via the most annoying thing of creating the keyword (see previous posts). Then shift enter the keyword away (see previous posts).
    c) HERE IS THE QUESTION. But it remains in the "not so" smart keyword library. Now I will have twice the number of keywords and have to remember which are old dead iPhoto keywords. I tried the plist trick (no luck). What do i do? Stay with iPhoto. This kind of *****.

I suspect that Aperture writes the keywords to the images or their version copies. to get rid of the old iPhoto keywords, make sure that they're no longer in the Keyword HUD and then rebuild the Aperture database. this will probably remove unused keywords from the filter list.
while launching Aperture, press and hold option-command.

  • Compressor 3.5.3 won't turn off Aperture settings

For some reason, even if I un-check the "Add clean aperture information" check box, Compressor still persists to encode 720x486 files as 655x486 upon output.
    Anyone know why?
Is there anyway to disable the Aperture functions outright?
I can cmd J the output files and turn Aperture off there, but that tedious when I need to make multiple files for multiple clients on a daily basis.
    Thanks!

I love the way some people write posts like this. It's a shame my telepathy sensors are not working properly... oh well!

  • CS4 - Aperture 3 Post-Edit View

I just ugraded to Aperture 3. I notice a long time lag for an updated image to appear in the View mode. Here's the troublesome work flow:
    1. Import RAW image into Aperture 3
    2. Use CS4 as an external editor.
    3. Use Niksoftware Silver EFex converting the image to B&W
    4. Save the image
    5. Close the CS4 window
    6. Attempt to view the converted file in the Aperture View Mode
Aperture does not update the image in View mode quickly. The B&W image appears as a thumbnail in a Browser or Split View. There is not indication that Aperture is processing the file.
Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone found a way to correct the delay?
I'm running Aperture 3 on a 17inch MBP (unibody), 10.6.2, latest RAW converter and Aperture 3 updates (iPhoto and Slideshow). I should also add that Aperture 3 is running in 64-bit mode.
    Thanks,
    Bill

Yea, I noticed the same situation. Only in viewer are the edits I have made with Topaz plugins not shown. However, on the lower right of the screen are various small icons. Click one that says Master and one then does get the edit shown. That said, must be a bug because the Master should not show any edits from the plugin.

  • Aperture's Places for LR

    Hi Guys,
I am a Lightroom user since version one, but currently I am considering to switch to Aperture, as I am blown away by Places (GPS) feature. It's just so handy for me to see a map with my pictures placed above represented by pinpoints. Why is there no such feature in LR3?
I see that I can click on a picture's GPS Button and be forwarded to Google Maps - but that's not the use case... I mean you have to distinguish between:
    1) Picture -> Show me the place (that's what we have in LR3)
    2) Place -> Show me the pictures
The later one is much more handy for my purposes, like "Show me all the picture's from the shooting in XYZ" or "Show me the vacation pictures from XYZ" which is what I am missing.
Will there be such a map integration, or not? I otherwise would switch to Aperture probably.
    Thanks,
    Tobi

I think it's a question of priorities, Tobi. The Places feature is nice, but it only appeals to a sector of the market. I'd certainly like to see it, but a good friend only ever photographs at 10 indoor locations and would get no value at all from it, or another friend who shoots weddings wouldn't benefit in any obvious way. But we all benefit from the big changes in LR3's raw conversion and lens distortion correctlons.
Another factor is that those who need geotagging tend to have it figured out already, often using third party solutions such as Geosetter and HoudahGeo. These have the advantage that you can use them to update the EXIF tags in the image, while any GPS data you add in Aperture is locked into the program (most unlike Apple to try to lock you in!).
I wouldn't be surprised if Lightroom did add something similar - after all, most of the heavy lifting is done by Google - or if it became possible to produce a plug-in based solution that's a lot more visual than we have today.
Notice the filter panel too. You can set it up with 4 columns and use it to drill down by place.

  • Metadata not showing up in Photoshop

I have Photoshop Tiff file that is managed in the Aperture library. When viewing the image in Aperture all the proper metadata appears in the Metadata pane. But when I open the photo in Photoshop and look at 'file info' only my name appears. Am I missing some kind of export option?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Gary

If you import the file by reference, you need to export the file (as TIFF) from Aperture. Simply opening the referenced file in Photoshop won't see any of the metadata tags that Aperture adds -- as Aperture is treating the referenced file as a master.
Aperture does not touch masters, ever. So export a version as a TIFF file if you want to see the Aperture modifications -- including metadata and adjustments (cropping, sharpening, etc.).
I think it's better to use "open in external editor" from within Aperture, actually, in this case.

  • Issue with "Desktop and Screensaver" preference pane

    Hey guys,
In my desktop prefs where i change my desktop wallpaper, everytime i add a new folder to select pictures from, they always add as "aperture projects" and it loads my aperture library. How can i reset this and use an actual folder??? If i delete the following preference
    User/Library/Preference/com.apple.iApps.plist
then it fixes the problem for the time being, until i open aperture again, then back tot he way it was.

    Anyone have an idea?

  • Exporting Metadata

I've created custom metadata views and presets for cataloging my images. Is it possible to export this metadata into an Excel spreadsheet as a CSV or TSV file? File/Export/Metadata exports standard metadata, but not my custom fields and entries. Or, is it possible to export XMP sidecar files and somehow import those into Excel? All that data is there somewhere within Aperture - please help me get it out and into a spreadsheet! Thanks.

You have to use some Applescript, but it's a relatively simple script.
    tell application "Aperture"
set tSelection to the selection -- this gets all the Versions currently selected
    set tValues to ""
repeat with i from 1 to number of items in tSelection -- now loop through selection
set tImg to item i of tSelection
set tValues to tValues & "Version Name: " & name of tImg -- add the name
    try
set tValues to tValues & "Aperture: " & value of EXIF tag "ApertureValue" of tImg -- add the aperture
set tValues to tValues & tab -- replace with "," for comma-delimted values
    end try
    try
set tValues to tValues & "Shutter: " & value of EXIF tag "ShutterSpeed" of tImg
    end try
set tValues to tValues & return -- make a new line for each image
    end repeat
    end tell
Copy and paste into Script Editor (in Applications/AppleScript) and hit the Run button, in the bottom pane you'll get the results. Note that you'll have to change 'EXIF tag' to 'custom tag' for your custom tags, and to 'IPTC tag' for IPTC data.
The 'try/end try' bits are in there so that the script doesn't fail if it comes up against an empty tag.
