Add to Desktop Pictures

Hi
New convert to iMac from Windows.
Love the facility to change desktop pictures, especially the Nature folder.
How do I add some of our own photos (from our African safari holiday) to the Nature folder in Desktop settings so they are included in the random change of desktop pictures?
Many thanks
Les

Just drag and drop them into the folder.
You may want to use copies rather than the originals, and you can crop and size them for the screen resolution in iPhoto to ensure no white bars or stretched pics.
If you don't want duplicates on the computer, you can use aliases in the Nature folder (or wherever else you choose - I use a seperate folder with a mixture of pics from the supplied folders, plus some of my own and some stellar views from APOD).

  • Add a new folder to Desktop Pictures in Library??

    Hi,
I've copied some desktop image folders into library/desktop pictures but when I open System Preferences my new folders cannot be seen.
anybody got any ideas? I wanted to add a new folder along with the Nature, Abstract, etc. folders.
    thanks.

Great news, and thank you for the Star!

  • How add Desktop picture Art to X Lion

I have installed new OS X  Lion. but I can not find my old desktop picture "Art" any more. How can I add this set of pictures to my Desktop background? Any help is much appreciated.

This folder is gone from the Apple wallpapers in Lion. If you still have a backup of your old system or a good friend still running Snow Leopard, navigate to Macintosh HD/Library/Desktop Pictures and you shall find the Art folder there alongside many others that are "missing" in Lion.

  • I want to use the default Apple desktop pictures but also add my own. Where are the system desktop pictures located?

I like the default images Apple provides for the desktop but would like to add my own.  I have desktop pictures set to change randomly every minute.  Is there a way for me to add my own images to the categories (like 'Plants' or 'Nature') that are already in the Desktop and Screen Saver preference panel?
    Thanks!

  • Desktop Pictures missing in preferences but not in Library...

When I go to change my desktop picture in system preferences and I click on a folder (like "nature" or "abstract"), the pics in that category do not appear and the preview screen stays blank. I checked and the files are still under Library->Desktop Pictures and I can select them from there if a add a new folder to the system preferences desktop pics list. The problem is that this should not be happening... anyone have a fix?

Not a fix but something I found out the hard way.. When I use quartz images that do not have the same size as my desktop and I scale them to fit my desktop size my graphics in general give trouble. Screen savers that will not run in test mode. Screen savers running black in the background, Photo Booth issues. Depth of the screen is reduced. If you use custom desktop pictures don't resize them to fit your screen, center them or just have them full screen. They somehow don't scale well.

  • 10.9.3 on iMac 27", dock displays near middle of screen, desktop picture isn't covering whole desktop. Anyone else having this annoying glitch?

    Hello Everyone.
I upgraded an iMac 27" (3.4 Ghz, Intel Core i7, 3TB fusion) from Mac OS X 10.8.6., to Mac OS X 10.9.3 a few days back.
Ever since then, the 2nd user to login on a given day, gets the dock displayed near the middle of the screen. It still interacts OK (e.g. you can launch applications from there), but it is not in it's correct location. The desktop picture (in this case, a shade of solid dark grey), only covers the smaller desktop area (up to where the Dock is). The remaining area of the screen automatically gets a 'light grey' background colour.
So person A logs in, no problem. But when person B comes along (with perosn A still logged in), the user logins, and they get this 'chopped of' version of the screen, with the dock mid-screen. (See screenshot attached).
The users can still click on any dock icons, and the applications will open up. But the dock won't return to it's original home, and refuses to 'jump' back to their proper home (at the bottom of the screen).
I've tried using CSCREEN to change the resolution at startup, via a terminal command and Automator, but that only works on some occasions. Others (like the attached screenshot) boot with the two-colour background, and 'confused' dock. A manual screen resolution change in the Settings area (down and then back up again), resolves the issue for that boot.
I've tried stripping back all non-essential plug-ins, tried removing a variety of start-up items, add-ons etc. I've tried creating a 'test' account, and the same issues appear to this account too.
Is it just me, or are others having problems with a misbehaving dock / screen resolution, in Mac OS X 10.9.3 / on an iMac 27"?
    Thank you!
    D.

    Hi folks.
I found a solution...Looks like the Dock is the culprit it's self. So, I made an automator app that I fire up automatically at login time. The automator app runs a shell script command:
       killall Dock
(make sure you have a capital D on Dock)
The Dock gets closed off, and it then re-opens in the correct spot (bottom of the screen -- not the middle of the screen). Hope this helps someone else!
    Enjoy.

  • How do I change my Desktop Picture to a solid color?

Hello folks, I'm trying to change my desktop picture to a solid black color in Leopard. How do I do that? I went into the desktop preferences under System Preferences but under solid colors, they do not have black. And I have no idea how to add more colors to the few selections there. Can someone help me out please? Thank you.

That's one idea, they have a solid black .png file on there, and you can either set it as your desktop and tile it, or follow their instructions.

  • Company-wide Desktop Picture on Mavericks Clients

We're looking at rolling out Mavericks on our systems at work, and I have set up a test machine to make sure everything will work as expected. We have a Lion server that is using Workgroup Manager MCX (instead of Profile Manager, which will change) to distribute policies to all the workstations. All of them are working well except for the desktop picture.
Now, I understand that the setting for desktop picture in Mavericks is no longer in a plist, but in an sqlite database. Is there any way to set the desktop picture using the Workgroup or Profile Managers for a Mavericks client? I don't want to replace the default picture on Mavericks systems because we update the desktop picture regularly.
EDIT: I should add, I tried to write a login script to do it, but I couldn't get it to run. The script has this single line:
tell application "System Events" to set picture of every desktop to "/Volumes/Groups/Everyone/Wallpapers/Current.png"

Your script is a kludgy hack that won't prevent users from changing the Desktop for the entirety of their session .
The correct way to do this is with Managed Preferences for OSX also called 'MCX' as you have already seen.
There is a tweak that should still work on 10.9 to import all the Apple based 'managed preference keys'.
Get Workgroup Manager for the same OS as the server (you may need the server admin tools, it varies, search for both). It may need to be the 10.9 version on Mavericks.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#workgroup%20manager
Open WGM on a client, connect to the server (do not work in the local node!). Select the group or computer group you are managing & select the 'Preferences > Details tab'. Click the + button to add the following…
    /System/Library/CoreServices/ManagedClient.app
This will give you the power to manage a lot of extra keys, find the 'Desktop picture' in the list, double click it, decide how often to manage it (once = first login, often = at each login, always = what it says ).
Select 'Often' & create a New Key, click the new item & select the key to manage (in this case Background). It should autofill the other values (e.g. image path & the path to the current Desktop. Sometimes Always won't create the key correctly, so create it inside often & drag it down.
Once all that is saved login as a member of the managed group & it should pull down the desired MCX prefs (reboot).
Your Macs will need to bound to the server for this to work & I haven't tested on 10.9 (WGM doesn't want to apply these to the local node, which may indicate it isn't possible.
I'd strongly suggest you copy the desired image to the Macs in question to increase reliability, or host it in an auto mount that appears in /Networks.
    Good luck

  • Why can't I right-click and set desktop picture?

    Greetings.
I am having a lot of trouble changing my desktop picture. From what I understand, you right-click the image and click on 'set as desktop picture'. I click it and nothing changes. I have tried to download the image and set it manually through System Preferences but when I go into Desktop & Screen Saver but there are no other folders other than the 'Apple' one that have the wallpapers that come with the computer.
If it's relevant at all, my macbook pro is a 10.6.8 version.

You should be able to do it three ways, some of which you already know:
Right-click image, choose "Set Desktop Picture"
Right-click desktop, choose "Change Desktop Background"
Go into System Preferences, click "Desktop and Screen Saver"
Note when you are in System Preferences, the current desktop is shown in an indented "well." That always indicates that it is a drop target. You don't need to be able to see in the list the pictures or folder you want. Just drag it from the desktop, or iPhoto, or whatever app you're looking at your photo in, and drop it in that well, and it will be set.

If you did want to do it the old-fashioned way and drill through folders and files, you can click the plus symbol [ + ] below the list there and then you can add any folder to the list. In case you have a folder full of desktop backgrounds, for instance.
(I might be wrong about some of this since I am using 10.8)

  • Desktop pictures include non-choice

This is a strange one: I went to the system preferences and chose the desktop picture that I want, and have it changing every minute - the only thing is, it ADDS pictures from one of the other folders that I have NOT chosen. It doesn't stay on the desktop as long as the ones that I have picked - but it still is included in the random display!! I read many of the posts, and went to disk utilities and attempted to repair permissions, but there were no problems - and the problem is continuing!
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

It seems to me that the option does not appear if you select an Apple default folder that contains pix that are the max size for your monitor. If you pick one of your own folders and click on one of the pix therein the options reappear.

  • Folders added to "Desktop Pictures" not visible in System Prefs...

    Hello,
I am trying to add additional wallpaper images to the "/Library/Desktop Pictures" directory. I can add images to this dir and they are visible in the Desktop & Screen Saver preferences, however newly added folders are not (I would like to add folders so I can keep the pictures organized).
How do I get Desktop & Screen Saver prefs to see new folders?
    -Steve

    Hi Mike,
Thanks very much! That did the trick!
Just so you know, there is one additional file I edited to make the folders appear with the desired name. Basically if you just add the text to Collections.plist it will display the folder but with the name on the identifier tag. If you want the folder to show a name other than the identifier you have to edit the Collections.strings file in the English.lproj directory.
Here are the instructions I've put together for this whole procedure:
    --------------------INSTRUCTIONS------------------------
    - cd /System/Library/PreferencePanes/DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane/Contents/Resou rces/DesktopPictures.prefPane/Contents/Resources
    - sudo vi Collections.plist
    - add additional items in the following form:
    identifier = myPatterns;
    path = "/Library/Desktop Pictures/My Patterns";
    showScalingPopUp = YES;
    - save file and exit
    THEN
    - cd English.lproj
    - sudo vi Collections.strings
add line entries in the following format:
    myPatterns = "My Patterns";
(the tag on the left of the '=' sign must match the identifier noted above)
    save file and exit
    --------------------INSTRUCTIONS------------------------
The only thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to get the scaling drop-down box to appear; you know, the drop-down box that gives you the following choices on how to display the image: Fill screen, Stretch to fill screen, Center, Tile.
I see in the Collections.plist file there is a tag for showScalingPopUp and I've set this to YES on some folders, but it doesn't bring up the drop-down box when I select an image within that folder.
I can certainly live without this b/c it's not that critical, but still it's curious...

  • Desktop picture lost

About a year ago, my wife (she has a G4 aluminum PB 1.33 GHz, 10.3.9) had a desktop picture of our son that originally came from an iChat session. I believe, but I'm not sure, that a screen shot was made of it (can't think how else I could have created a pic. of it) and it became her desktop picture. At some point I went into System Prefs>Desktop & Screensaver and intended to add more pics. to rotate and accidently deleted that pic. It's been gone ever since. I searched all the picture folders in the window and also searched (Find) "Desktop" and "iChat" with no luck. Any idea where the original of the pic. might be?

You can't delete photos from the Desktop & Screen Saver section of System Preferences. The only way to do that is to go to the folder where those pictures were saved and delete it from there.
So, we'll assume for the sake of argument that they were in the Desktop Pictures folder, which is in /Library/Desktop Pictures. Look in there for it or another sub folder you might have chosen. If it's not there, then it's gone forever unless you have a backup somewhere.

  • How do I customize my desktop pictures?

I'd like to rotate through different desktop pictures - and love some of the pictures provided. But I'd like to select which ones I want, and maybe add some. How can I do that?

Think I've found the answer!  Thanks anyway!

When I opened iphoto this morning all my photos since April 2013 are gone. My desktop picture is still current but I can't find my pictures.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library. Select the checkbox to include orphaned photos.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Desktop Picture folders missing.....

I installed mountain lion and noticed alot of desktop pictures missing.  I did a re-install but nada.  I looked in the desktop pics folder and they simply arent there.  The old "Nature" "Abstract" etc are gone, just random pics (about 35).  Only other folder is the "Colors" folder.  Anybody else experiencing this and did you find a fix? I called Apple but they didn't know how to fix it or why it didn't install with Mountain Lion.
    thanks

Okay, thanks Barney. I seem to be able to add and subtract individual pictures in the default folders, but (as you said) I can't add more folders to the main library folder. I was just trying to keep all of my desktop picture categories in one place, but as it is now I'll have to be happy with two places. I keep the majority of my photos in my user/pictures/"more desktop pictures" folder - and then I add them in using the + button. I do find it annoying that they show up in a different section (below iPhoto) in the system preferences window. Oh well.
    Thanks again,
    John
