It depends on exactly what you did; or did not do; also on what backups you may have.
Firefox tries to automatically keep some auto restore copies of bookmarks and history. If you do an uninstall and reinstall of firefox it will give you the option to retain personal data.
If you have previously explicitly made backups of bookmarks etc by exporting them, it should be relatively straightforward to recommence using those files. If that option is not available, what about your ordinary backups , do they include the bookmarks.

Operating a business with a computer and not keeping current backups is a very dangerous thing to do. Hard drives can fail at any time. Experienced IT people will tell you there are two kinds of hard drives - those that have failed and those that are going to fail. The only question is when.

When within a wedsite, when prompted to access info a blank page that saya"Search Bookmarks and History" pops up denying me access, how do I fix this?

Example: when in my on line banking site I want to access older statements I press the prompt and a full blank page stating "search Bookmarks and History" pop up and I cannot access what I requested.
This happens on many sites, I do believe it may be something I accidentally changed.
How do I reset the program to correct this problem?
And if I just have to reload the program itself how do I insure my bookmarks will not be deleted?

If links are JavaScript type of links (onclick or href="javascript:")then you have to left-click such a link.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

Wade, there is a way "undo" the Refresh but it does have a lot of steps. See whether you can do this on your own.
As you may have noticed, the Refresh/Reset feature copies your settings (profile) folder to the desktop into a folder named "Old Firefox Data".
Check inside "Old Firefox Data" folder for a folder with a semi-randomized name. If there's only one, that probably has your old settings and add-ons. If there's more than one, you'll want to work with the one that was updated most recently.
Once you have identified the profile folder you want to restore, here is my suggested "old profile resurrection procedure":

After upgrading toFirefox 4 and Syncing, I lost all bookmarks and history on one PC.

I had been using FF 3.6 on 2 PCs untill yesterday, and only the native browser on an Archos 101 IT Android tablet.
I have
- upgraded 1st PC (Win. XP) to FF4
- added FF mobile to the android tablet,
- synched both : OK.
Then,
- upgraded 2nd PC (Win 7) to FF4,
- synched with previous.
Problems :
1. on the 1st PC (Win XP), I still have an equivalent of the old horizontal menu (File, Edit, Display, History, Bookmarks, Scrapbook, ?) Is this normal ? There is no 'Tabs on top" option.
2. on the 2nd PC (Win 7, with the new Firefox button and, whenever Sync is active, I get the unknown error : (translated from french) Sync has encountered an error while synchronising : '''unknown error'''. Sync will automatically try this action again.
I have stopeed and restarted Sync : same.
The Personal Bar shows multiple copies of a single button (which existed before on both PCs, once only). I cannot delete any of these button copies.
3. on the same, I see History when pressing Ctrl+H (OK), but no bookmark when pressing Ctrl+B (empty). The Library (Ctrl+Shift+B) is also totally empty : no history, no bookmark.
Some bookmarks show (copied from 1st PC, without my old bookmarks) in the Firefox > Bookmarks sub-menu.
History is not synched.
Bookmarks have disappeared from 2nd PC. I tried restoring from backups, but nothing showed.
Anything I can do ?

Hi Diovizor,
Make sure that you do not use [http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Clear%20Recent%20History Clear Recent History] to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox.
Also please make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode.
You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: Use custome settings for history. Uncheck "Always use permanent Private Browsing mode"

I downloaded IOS 5??? yesterday and synced, last night when I went to look at photos and videos they were all gone. How do I get them back? I noticed all my pictures from my computer were now on I pad but nothing that was originally on I pad, everything gone. Could this be on my computer some where?

Demo is right. If you have a backup/synced with your PC you might be lucky finding a previous backup? You can just restore your iPhone to get your photos & videos back. Simply sync your iPhone via iTunes to transfer the files back to your device. Alternatively, you can also use iPhone Backup Extractor to extract the media files off to your computer (assuming you have a backup of the files you are referring to).

Bookmarks and History gone from sidebar

I use FF 11.0 and my History and my Bookmarks are NOT deleted or cleared from Firefox. They can still be accessed via the Menu Bar. However, when I activate the sidebar to access my history and bookmarks the side bar is completely empty! Deleting the file "places.sqlite" does not help.

Deleting the ''places.sqlite'' file is not the recommended method of clearing history.
I am not sure I understand whether you are
* trying to delete History and it is not disappearing
* or surprised that your sidebar is now empty
Manually deleting ''places.sqlite'' may not give the results you expect, as Firefox is then forced to recreate the file. Places.sqlite is your database of History and Bookmarks.

If you ended up creating a new Apple ID and used it to create a new icloud account, then you can't access the contacts from the old icloud account. But I may not be understanding what you did.

I have the "Bookmarks and history system will not be functional" problem and not FireFox will not open at all and my whole computer freezes if I try.

My bookmarks and history keep disappearing and the backup system isn't working (this has happened a half a dozen times in the last few weeks). Any ideas why?

I have manually recreated my list of bookmarks in Firefox several times now only to come back (days) later and find they have disappeared. Probably related (but less concerning) is the fact that the browsing history also seems to have been cleared.
My browser is set to remember my history and I haven't been using the private browsing option. The backup/restore option for the bookmarks doesn't seem to be functioning, either, because even when I select a day on which I know there were functioning bookmarks, "restoring" to that day does absolutely nothing.
The computer in question is my desktop at work, and I haven't been in the office much over the summer, so I didn't know what updates had been installed and when, so I was hopeful that updates were somehow responsible. However, the bookmarks I saved this past Friday were lost over the weekend, and according to the update history, no new updates were installed.
Before I left the office on Friday, I tried restarting the browser and the computer in an attempt to figure out what was triggering this deletion; neither of those two actions had any effect -- the history and bookmarks were all still in tact after the restarts.
Any thoughts?

Bookmark function not working at all; lost all bookmarks and can't recover

I have lost all bookmark function, all bookmarks, and have tried all of the suggested tips for recovering them. I found the "profile" file within Help->Troubleshooting Info.->Application Basics-> but there's no information about what to do with it once you find it. It's an application apparently. I have quit everything running, restarted, etc. Nothing is working. Please help.

Thanks I've checked out the manual.
Under the "Data Transfer" menu there are two options "Server sync" and "PC synchronisation".
Neither are mentioned at all in the user guide!
I assume it's the latter I'm interested in, and all it does is give an option for a user name and password.
I've set a user name and password, but I'm not sure what they're for, there seems to be no option in PC Suite to put them in.

Just upgraded to lateste verison of Firefox and started using the Tab groups. Like them, but noticed that Save all bookmarks is now gone. How do I save all my bookmark stored inside the tab groups?

I had to restart firefox because of an update and I saved all my tabs and when I restarted firefox it has lost all of my saved bookmarks...won't be using the new tab groups again..very disappointed
