Added 512mb ram to G4 iBook - down to 256mb. What gives?

I added 512mb of ram (ram specs straight from G4 manual) to my G4 ibook for a total of 768mb of ram. I checked this in system profiler - perfect! 4 hours later my book froze and wa-la! I'm down to a total of 512mb ram. The 256mb installed (came w/ book) is ok and the extra 512mb i added today is down to 256mb. It's working but i lost 256mb. Anyone know why?

Hi Panfer,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
I am trying to piece together your problem in my head so please bare with me. So you added 512Mb of RAM to your soldered 256Mb and now it only shows 256Mb. I believe you RAM is defective or not properly installed. Where did you purchase the RAM module? Here is where you can find the manual provided by Apple on installing RAM. Try taking the module out and reinserting it.
I hope that helps,
Jon

  • Adding 512mb ram doesn't boot up my MSI-6585!

My mobo is Max 648, MSI-6585 and I have Kingston KVR333X64C25/512 ram.  I had installed it in first slot, moving 256mb PC2700 to other slot.
It will not boot up, and there were diagnosis leds light up telling me it's a fault memory or not installed properly so I took it back to shop and exchanged for another one.
And had a go with it, iy's the same as before.
I have been downloading test report and it states that this ram will work!
Is there anything I am missing? ?(
    Installing ram should be straightforward??

Actually, 256mb pc2700 ram comes with motherboard works fine.
But my pc doesn't boot up with 512mb ram installed, even on its own (does boot up but produces some errors in windows XP)
However, I have checked everything and there's one thing i'm unsure about, I noticed that Hyper Threading is enabled on bios even though my intel CPU doesn't have HT.  I have disabled it but i haven't test 512mb ram yet (with HT disabled) as i need to know what is causing this ram problem.  Could enabling HT causes problem with rams or nothing at all?
I was contacted by Kingston support and they asked me if i have updated bios in my mobo and i checked, it's AMI 3.31a which is the latest at the moment as i have only received mobo a week ago.
But I have found other 648 Max mobo, MSI 6585 Mobo (without HT) it has bios version 1.5 as the latest.
My mobo manual logo say 648 Max (but didn't say HT)...could be mixed up?? ?(
But I assumed mine is 648 Max HT because my bios screen showed its AMI v3.31a which is like that since I receive this mobo.
Also could bios settings effect rams installed?

  • 512MB ram disappering while iBook is running??

I've just bought my first mac really happy for it! BUT when i start my iBook and choose the "About this mac" it says:
    Processor: 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4
    Memory: 1024 MB DDR SDRAM
When the iBook has been used for a while and i choose the "About this mac" again it suddenly says:
    Processor: 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4
    Memory: 512 MB DDR SDRAM
How could this be? if i reboot the iBook it says 1024MB SDRAM again!! why?? help me i love to see the 1024MB

Have you verified that the RAM is installed properly? Perhaps it is a little loose.
Another possibility is that the RAM device is failing.

  • Built-in audio keeps disappearing - iBook G4 1.42 - what gives?

Last month I took my iBook G4 1.42 on the road and kept on getting problems with my built-in audio. I attributed this to movement, but I wasn't 100% sure. I took care of it every time by powering down, removing the battery, holding power for 10 seconds, replacing the battery, and rebooting. I don't normally need audio, but there were a few games that would stall and then exit if there was no audio output device seen in the configuration.
It's been at home for a few weeks (my wife is the primary user) and it behaved pretty well until the built-in audio wasn't seen in the configuration again. I tried the old power-down trick without the battery again, but audio wouldn't come up. The whirling icon showed up when I tried to access most of the stuff on the top bar, but eventually settled down with no audio volume icon. I then tried holding down command-option-P-R while booting to reset the PRAM. Then it booted with the Mac chine and the built-in audio was fine.
Any idea what's going on. Yesterday was the first time built-in audio disappeared when I wasn't on the road, and the first time pulling the battery and pressing power didn't solve the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I came across the suggestion when I looked for how to reset the PRAM, but I didn't think I needed it at the time. I'll try it if the audio goes out again.

  • Yosemite. iPhoto has stopped sharing pix via email. Have tried removing and re-adding accounts. This is a new problem. What gives??

I recently had a new hard drive installed and upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 on a Macbook Pro. No problems for the first week, then iPhoto 9.6 stopped sharing pix via email. I tried removing and re-adding my accounts but that didn't help. Thanks in advance for any advice. Ra Buck.

PS. IPhoto doesn't seem to connect, but I'm not getting an error message.

  • 12" iBook 512MB moving to 14" iBook

I've been out of the loop for awhile and have lost track of the RAM differences bewteen the G3-based iBook models. Can someone say if a 512MB module used a 12" iBook 500MHz (Dual USB first model) be used operationally in an April 2003 iBook G3 14" 700MHz ?
...and while I'm at it what about AirPort card compatibility between 12" and 14" iBooks as described above - are they same?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the detailed info on Apple's iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program.
My daughter is grown up and lives some 900 miles south of wher I'm located. She looks to her Dad for computer advice. I bought her iBook some time back as a used M8602LL/A model on Dec 26 2003 for $731. It had been used from Aug 2002 until Dec 2003 presumably. I added 512MB RAM and installed an Airport card for her and upgraded it to the latest Apple's Mac OS X at the time.
Her iBook has performed flawlessly for her until recently when suddenly one morning the power button would not starting the system as it would/should normally do. Since then and a few days later the power button stratup started working again. This was after me taking her through several testing scenarios over the phone such
Remove Battery for 5 mins and then reinsert and try power buttin startup again.
Remove power line for short while and then reinsert and try power button startup again.
Check battery charge level - was at 4 green LEDs fully lit (ie fully charged)
The only anomaly I could see was that if battery fully charged then why was the power plug that insert into the iBook showing orange charging state and not green. This was so after some six hours as well.
The iBook was left overnight and my daughter was ticked off with the affair and just for kicks tried the power button startup and hey - it started up and has been working ever since for maybe a week now. She does not turn power it off but sleeps the iBook when she's not using it.
Her iBook serial number (as shown in her expired AppleCare Protection Plan Certificate) falls between the stated range given by Apple serial numbers in the following range:
    UV117XXXXXX to UV342XXXXXX
    Her's is UV228XXXXXX
Her power button startup issue is not defined by Apple in your provided Ref for this Repair Extension Program as a "component failure". However, since this is an Extension program I wonder if it is defined in the program before it evolved to be an Extension program. Any ideas on this ? Do you have a Ref for the original Logic Board Repair program by chance ?
I will call Apple at 1-800-275-2273 and speak to them about this while also asking my daughter to explore all of this at the SF Apple Store downtown which is but a few minutes walk for her.

  • Tecra 9100 - Installed extra 512mb RAM but it's slowed down my computer!

After much fumbling around trying to install my new 512mb RAM, I switched on my computer to find it boots much slower. A message popped up saying 'Memory Module Added' and my computer shows that 768mb is installed which is correct because I already have 256mb installed in Slot 1.
So why on Earth is my computer even slower!? I bought it to speed up the thing! My computer is slower to boot, is less responsive and much better off with just the 256mb of RAM installed.
I think I might have damaged the RAM or Slot 2 because at first I inserted it in wrong. They should have made a video demonstration on how to install it because the manual didn't help me that much!
The RAM is from Crucial and supports my laptop because I ran the tests to decide which RAM I need.
    Can anyone please help me!

I'm a bit puzzled as to why your laptop would slow down after a memory upgrade. Like Kingston, Crucial is a recognised brand and therefore you should have no compatibility issues. The memory will tend to run at the speed of the slowest module, as is the case here.
While a properly earthed anti-static wrist strap may be the ideal procedure, I usually rely on earthing myself on (say) an appliance which I know is fully grounded immediately before touching a memory module. Alternatively a radiator or other item which might be earthed. Of course this depends on your countries electrical regulations :-)
You must avoid touching the contacts or surface - always best to hold the module only by its edges.
As another poster has suggested, remove the 256MB module and replace with the (new) 512MB Crucial module and check the laptop boots OK with just the 512MB module. A symptom of bad memory is when it causes the PC to fail to boot or the PC freezes at any point (either within seconds or after a period of time).
If this fails, then download the memory diagnostic tool from Microsoft web site (you may want to do this from another PC). I cannot remember the full name or URL, but it is the one recommended by XP when a memory-related error is reported. The software extracts to a bootable floppy or CD and carries out a very comprehensive memory test.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Adding more RAM to Tiger

My ibook has 512MB's of RAM. I am happy with this. However since next year I plan to return to school to get a Masters in Ministry, I may need more RAM. From 2001-2005 while I working on my undergrad I used a Performa 6360 which had 136MB's of RAM + RAM Doubler. I was able to run some 20 apps at one time (or more) without a major slowdown. I cannot do this with Tiger, and since I plan to get the OSX version of Dave to access other PC's on the network (since whatever is built int OSX pales in comparison to Dave). On my Performa 6360 Dave was a necessity, since the campus dumped using Macs in 2002. I remember my 1st year (2001-2002) I could access a number of Macs on the Appletalk network at the time. But after the Fall 2002 semester the mac got dumped. Some students still used Macs, but fewer and fewer used them in the 2003-2005 years.
So my question is. Will maxing out my ibook to a gig of RAM although me to run some 20-30m apps at one time (like I could on the Performa) or was OSX Tiger just not designed for this?
OSX Tiger is much better than OS 9.1, but not in all areas as OS 9.x and before do have their advantages over Tiger.
    Thanks,
    John

Actually, OS 9 does not have any advantage over OS X. You had 136 MB of ram plus RamDoubler, why do you think 512 MB of ram will be less adequate?
RamDoubler merely did what OS X does as part of how it works. It did not give you more ram it just allocated more to the app up front while dropping background apps as low as possible. This is what OS X does.
If you were running 20 - 30 apps with 136 MB of ram then they weren't ram hogs at all and it's very likely you can run them without adding more ram now.
OS X handles virtual memory much better too. In the old days I could run 2-3 apps at a time, now I can run 10-12, and most of mine are major ram hogs like Photoshop.

  • About older RAM in new iBooks

I have just purchased a new 1.4gHz iBook that comes with 512MB RAM to replace my old iBook that I spilled OJ on last night (killed the logic board). I have 512 MB of upgrade RAM in the old iBook, which is a 2004 1gHz model. Will that old RAM work in my new machine? If so, I will be a much happier person. Thanks for the help!

Ah, man! That is a real drag. I was hoping to be able to salvage at least that much of the old machine for future use. And on top of that, now I'm down to only 512 MB RAM as opposed to the 768 that I had, I'm going to have to upgrade in one way or another. Thanks for the information, though, I appreciate it.

  • Pentium III 512mb RAM

I have an old Compaq desk pro (museum piece), Pentium III, new 512MB Ram, new 180GB hard drive that was given to me by my employer years ago. I recall when the machine was new she was relatively fast. My main PC crashed, both hard drive and back-up
drive died within 3days of each other (thanks Seagate) What is the most efficient way to get some speed back?. Yes, I have already heard "use it as a boat anchor" and buy a new system. I just don't have the wallet fat, but my ex-wife
    I keep her "In Style!"
    Thanks

Here are a few things that may help to speed up your XP computer. Not all of them will necessarily apply to you but look through the list and run those that seem appropriate:
    1. Make sure you are free from malware as that can slow it down. If necessary, run your ‘anti’ programs.
    2. Although XP supposedly runs on 512MB of memory (RAM), adding more if you have less than about 1GB will help it run better. It will behave even better with 2GB. To check how much memory you have, right-click My Computer, click Properties and the General
Tab shows how much is installed.
    3. Run Disk Cleanup via Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk CleanUp. Now, defragment the hard drive (not on an SSD) via Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Click on the drive
    and choose Defragment.
    4. Check the disk for errors. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type chkdsk /r and press Enter. Allow it to run next time you restart the computer or restart it now.
    5. Don’t turn off your antivirus program, but check if it’s running a scheduled scan when you switch on the computer. If it is, reschedule it for a more appropriate time.
    6. You’ll get a slightly faster start up if you optimise the boot files and applications by running a special defragmentation (not on an SSD), i.e. in a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type cmd and press Enter to open a command prompt then type defrag C:\
-b (note the two spaces) and press Enter.
    7. When you have a slow boot, check that no external drives have media in them. If they have, experiment by booting with it inserted and without.
    8. Remove unwanted programs that run when you switch on the computer. Bear in mind that it’s not necessarily how many programs run at start up, but which of them affect the computer’s performance. If possible, look at the program’s options/preferences to
see if it can be stopped from running at start up.
If there is no option, run Microsoft’s Autoruns from the right pane here
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902 It doesn’t need downloading nor installing. Run it and go to the Logon Tab and remove the tick alongside the programs you don’t want to start. Right-click an entry and choose Search online for more
information about it. It is completely reversible if you unintentionally stop a program from starting up.
Also, the built-in system configuration utility (msconfig) can be used, but its primary function is to troubleshoot start up errors. Note that some programs use a service to start them running.
    9. You can use Process Explorer to see which services/programs are using which files. To determine which process is using a particular file, click Find at the top, type the name of the file and click Search. To see the svchost processes, let the mouse pointer
hover over each svchost.exe in the left pane. Download it from here

  • IMac G5 1.9ghz OS 10.5.8 512mb ram

I have finished fixing a imac g5 1.9 with 512mb ram for my 8yr old daughter. it seems to run fine, but it tends to freeze a lot requiring a reboot. I also see in the Activity monitor that the CPU usage tends to be maxed out for quite a while after the re-boot. system % is low but % user causes it to max out even though I do not have any applications running. after 5 min, it seems to calm down.
Now I do have a 2gb stick of ram on its way. should the memory put an end to the freezing?
    thanks
    Kevin

512MB is the minimum required for Leopard, and with most operating systems, the minimum is enough to turn on the lights, however, certainly not maximize performance. Although it resets at each boot, you could view your page ins and outs on the system memory tab of the Activity Montior to see what's happening with 512MB memory. If page outs are 10% or greater of page ins, you can use more memory for what you run. Your 2GB on order should certainly help in that respect.
Assume you have plenty of free space on your hard drive for systems usage (10% or more).
Do you have any print jobs that haven't completed? OS X can max out trying to reprint ... maybe a long shot but worth checking. dd

  • Adobe CS2 on 512MB RAM? Rosetta?

I've got a 2.0GHz Macbook completely stock. I've been attempting to run CS2, but the system slowdown is just unbearable. Running more than one of the programs crashes the other, and trying to run any one of the programs along with something else such as Safari or iChat is just nonsense. Also, after running any one of these the rest of the system seems to run pretty slow (even after quitting). Can I simply attribute this to only having 512MB of RAM? I'm "upgrading" from:
1.0GHz eMac with 640MB of RAM
1.33GHz iBook with 768MB of RAM
    800MHz Powermac G4 with 1.5GHz of RAM
Even the measly eMac puts the Macbook to shame when running the Creative Suite. Will upgrading the RAM surely put my Macbook over the top, or is this increadible Rosetta slowdown pretty normal?

I think the crashing is simply a complete lack of RAM. While it should still work due to Mac OS X's memory management it's possible that the core required memory is too high for your 512MB.
In reality I would upgrade your RAM to 1GB or more regardless so I would do that and see how things go. Hopefully your crashing will disappear at that point.
EDIT : I would bite the bullet and upgrade to 2GB. It will certainly help you now and CS3 is surely going to have higher requirements than CS2 so it'll be nice to have.

  • Will adding more Ram  help?

My iMac is 2010. Over the last 3 - 4 months its started to slow down a bit. I  realize sometimes thats just the way things are but I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help. It seems that everything is a bit slow on startup/wakeup. It takes about 5-10 seconds for things to get rolling, that doesn't bother me that much, I can handle it, just pointing out that is different from 3-4 months ago. Once things get rolling its fine.
iPhoto on occasion slows down, but again for the most part its ok. It's iMovie that really seems to lag. I realize of the things I am using iMovie is probably the most "powerful" program I am using , dealing with all the video files, but it has become very tedious to use. I've tried to "clean up" things a bit and that doesn't seem to really be helping. I am wondering if adding more RAM would help. Currently I have 4 slots filled with 2 GB of Ram. I think thinking of upgrading 2 of those to 4GB.
I guess I am wondering if that would make a difference? I know in theory adding more "juice" will make things run faster but for the most part the computer does run ok on its own, its iMovie that lags. It it simplky because its a more powerful program and adding more juice will help. Or do we think something else is going on?
    OS X Version 10.9.1
    3.06 Ghs Intel Core i3
    8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

    Any thoughts?

Apple supports most of their computer products for a 7 year period, could be that your IBook is well past any kind of help.Secondly parts are no longer being made for this machine and never will be again. Finally I find it hard to believe that nothing has been done with this for 6 years.Have you documented the reasons why you were turned down for repairs ? were the replaced Ibooks within a couple of months of warranty expiration? What model is your IBook ? At least if we knew what the model #, some of the more techy types could find out if there were any repair programs for your model.
Seems odd that you'd hang on to a non-working IBook for that long.
