Added a SSD in GE60

Hi all,
I have purchased a GE60 0ND and have added a 128GB Plextor SSD. may I know how can I fresh install the windows8 OS to SSD without the window8 installation disk/usb?
I have tried to boot by the recovery disk but it seem like it will just restore the windows to default settings.
many thanks.

do I need to configure the SSD to GPT mode?
my SDD is in MBR mode and I tried to recovery twice without success.
thanks.
I honestly do not have an answer for this, as I do not know.
I would imagine it SHOULD work without GPT, but I really can't be certain. Perhaps use the recovery disks to just wipe the disk first?

  • How do I set up my Imac after adding a SSD along with my existing HD

How do I set up my Imac after adding a SSD so that my system and apps are on the SSD and everything else is on the HD?  I am using mountain Lion.  I want to make sure I can still do Time Machine backups.
I was planning on first formatting the SSD and then using Migration Assistant to copy the System and the Library and the Apps over.  Where it gets confusing is the User account where some of the items will be on the SSD but I want all my folders to be on the HD.  Do I just not copy over that other stuff and once I restart from the SSD it will know where all the folders are?  Is there anything I need to know about setting up a time machine backup after that?  Will the backup I had from the one drive have to be erased and start a whole new backup?
I just want to do this right so I don't have some major problems.
    Thanks for any help.
    Michael

time machine backed up your whole system data/everything in time machine hdd.
you want to use ssd over hdd so you need to put new mac os x in ssd.
then copy all the stuff that you want to put in ssd.
from my point of view put the mac os x and other application in ssd and leave other data in hdd.(music,movies,etc....)

  • Unable to Activate iMessage on MacPro after adding new SSD

Just added a SSD to my Mac Pro - wonderful speed-up having only System, Apps Library and User Folders on the drive!
    Using Mountain Lion v 10.8.4
But Messages v 7.0.1 will no longer work.
On opening, it asks me to Enter Apple ID to activate iMessage.
It has pre-populated the Apple ID with my email address but when I enter the Password, it goes into cog-wheel mode and, after a delay, responds that it is unable to sign in asking me to check my network connection (it is working great for Mail, Safari etc)
I have double-checked the password (the same one allows me to enter the Apple Store and is effective on my Mac Book Pros. my iPhone & my iPad).
I used Clean My Mac to remove Messages (and its many folders), reinstalled Mountain Lion from a start-up flash drive I created, updated the system software and found a pristine version 7.0.1 of Messges in the Applications Folder.
But I still have the same problem.
    Appreciate any suggestions.
    ...John
PS iMessages works great on my iPhone & iPad.
Messages(v 7.0.1) works great on my Mac Book Pro (running 10.8.4)

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
    Step 1
Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
Restart your broadband device and your router, if different. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 3
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or obviously invalid, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
    Step 4
Back up all data, then take the steps suggested in this support article.
There are five steps in that article. Please take all of them. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If any proxy options are selected, make a note of them and then deselect them. You don’t need to change the bypass or FTP settings. Click OK and then Apply. Test. The result may be that you can't connect to any web server. Restore the previous settings if that happens.
    Step 6
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Step 7
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
    Step 8
Boot in safe mode and log in. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
If iMessage worked in safe mode, but didn't work when you booted out of safe mode, stop here and post your results.
    Step 9
According to one anecdotal report, Flash Player may interfere with iMessage, though I don't know how and can't confirm. To test this theory, select from the menu bar
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
Close the preference pane. If this action solves the problem, please post your results.
    Step 10
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 11
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support.

  • Adding an SSD (SATA III) to HP Elite desktop. Is it possible?

    Dear Experts...
I would like to upgrade my computer adding an SSD drive as a master drive and shifting the original 2TB drive to be a slave.
I found several coices of SSD drives but almost all of them are SATA III interface.
Does my desktop supports this interface? as it is just written that it has a SATA interface without specifying which version of SATA!
How many hard drives could this desktop holds? I already have two (the original 2TB, and my old 256GB drive), and I wand to add one SSD for Windows and progs.
Can I buy this SSD for example? Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State ...
This is the official HP specifications page of my Desktop .
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hi,
It has 2 spare HDD bays as on its specs:
         http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02781215
You can swap SSD on your machine and make the old HDD as a secondary ("slave") drive. SATA III is backward compatible therefore you can use it. Since SSD's are smaller (normally 2.5") you need something which is similar to one of the following brackets:

  • Adding a SSD Disk Cache to my laptop

I posted earlier on this topic and got an answer from Huffer.... Perhaps I misunderstood but the installation of the msata ssd is turning out to be more complex and more involved that i read into Huffer's response.
When I install the SSD and boot the system, I am not given an opportunity to choose which drive to boot from.  Instead the system tried to boot, fails, appears to take a dump, then tries again.   If I use the escape key and to go the OS Boot manager, it still does not offer an opportunity to choose the drive and fails, but this time says it is trying to do an automatic rebuld.  (or something along those lines).  At this point I interrupt it and force it to power down.
I have tried researching the question elsewhere and it appears that the AHCI mode that the system is operating in may be the source of the problem.  My Intel RST does not have the 'accelerate' option that I believe is necessary, and instead offers 'performance'.  Here's a link to one of the better posts I've found on the subject:  http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/How-it-Works-Intel-SSD-Caching-148/
Early in the post you'll see for pictures of what the Intel RST should look like when adding your SSD.  The first picture shows it having five buttons with one of them being 'accelerate'  and notes the following below that image:
"Launch the Intel RST software and click on the "Accelerate" button. If the button is not present, you either are not in RAID mode or one of the other requirements have not been met"
I have found a setting in what passes for bios on a windows 8 system and it does offer the option of enabling raid.  My conclusion is that this is what I need to do to add the msata ssd to my system as a disk cache.
    So... my question...
Is my conclusion correct?  Or perhaps the answer is that my system does not meet some other requirement for using the msata ssd drive as a disk cache.
My system is an HP Envy Touchsmart  15-j003cl Notebook PC.   I have found reference in the device manager that it has the "Intel 8 Series / C220 Series Family Platform Controller Hub" and as I read a decription of the Hub there is hope that it does support what I want to do.  (http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/datasheets/8-series-chipset-pch-datashee...
    Any guidence would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Yes, if i remove the msata ssd the system boots without problems.   .... well... sometimes it needs to finish up whatever it was doing first, but then it boots with the msata ssd removed.
There is no optical drive with this system, but it has a sd card slot.  I used that and a 32 gig sd card to create the recovery media.  I do have a USB attached cd/dvd drive - and all the USB connectors are USB 3.0.
I'll enable Intel Rapid Start and give it a try.  I was wondering about that.  It already resume's pretty fast from hibernate and sleep but more is always better.
How do I use the startup repair tool?  I would have to have the msata ssd inserted to use it, and the system will not boot to windows then.  My system also uses UEFI rather than good-ole BIOS since its newly minted with w8.  I suspect that is complicating matters.

  • I added an SSD and I have 2 drives

I just added a SSD drive to my MBP and I moved the original drive to the optical bay. I am interested in having the SSD only handle the startup and the OS. I want place app icons on the SSD desktop, I want the apps to be kept on the original drive. How do I do this?

Partitioning an SSD!!! Normally users make raid 0 out of several SSD to have a one large partition striped across the SSDs.  Can not think of a good reason to partition an SSD. Perhaps there may be???

  • How to re-install windows 8 on my ssd msi ge60

I bought this msi ge60 a few months ago. I suffered windows update problems because of the nvidia card error and as a result i wanted to install a fresh copy of windows. Now originally the windows 8 is already installed on my ssd. I just wanted install on it again. I have had made the recovery disk however while recovering though disk one an error arises and says the installation was unsuccessful. When i go to my desktop and open my computer i see that the recovery infact tried to install windows on the HDD instead of the ssd drive.
I used the second recovery option which avoids formatting all the drives and an error arisies which says "1. Make sure the disk partition layout is factory default setting. 2. Make sure the current OS HDD is in the master HDD place."
What to do now? recovery disks wont work and neither will the f3 function :(
EDIT: I cant remove my hdd for fresh installation as it will void the warranty while i remove the cover

You can use a usb thumb drive or an external optical drive. IMO it is easier to use an external usb optical drive, no creating images, making the thumb drive bootable, or copying ISOs onto the thumb drive. External optical drives are cheap.

  • Adding a SSD to a Mac Pro

I want to get a Mac Pro in the new year, I will also get one of the new 300gb Intel X25-M's when they are released. I'm wondering if there is a product to mount a 2.5" SSD in the sled that doesn't cost a lot of money. The products I can find that are reasonably priced are designed for PC's and don't take into account the position of the SATA connectors in the Mac Pro. I don't want to spend $60 + shipping to Australia for the one bracket I found thats made for a Mac Pro.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hello DELTAsnake,
As Alex said, you can install an SSD in the lower optical drive bay without any form of mounting at all:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-InstallingSSD.html
I installed my SSD system boot drive (OS and Apps.) there, as per the above instructions, which are the same for the new 2010 models as shown for the Mac Pro Nehalem (2009) installation.
Its performance there is exactly the same as if it was installed in one of the Mac Pro's hard drive bays, but with the added advantage, for me, that I could use all four of those bays for a RAID 0 configuration using WD VelociRaptors.
Even if you don't want to use all four hard drive bays initially, it still makes sense to install the SSD in the lower optical drive bay, unless you need two optical drives.
You mention your intention to buy "one of the new 300gb Intel X25-M's when they are released", but why not consider an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro (or Pro RE) instead?:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internalstorage/Mercury_Extreme_SSD_Sandforce/Solid_State_RaidEdition
They are rated extremely highly for use in Mac Pros:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/SSD-RealWorld.html
I ordered a Mercury Extreme Pro RE 100GB SSD from OWC in the USA, and delivery to the UK, via Federal Express, was effected within two days.

  • I removed my optical drive because i added an ssd hard drive. when i plug in the dvd to usb it will not play from the macbooks dvd program. the error message is there was an initialization error, a valid drive could not be found.

I can go into disk utility and see the optical drive and mount what ever cd is in the drive and quicktime will play it. but i would like to have the dvd program recognize the optical drive and open what ever is in it.

Freakin amazing! I installed a new 1TB Samsung SSD in my main hard drive slot and moved my old hard drive into my DVD slot and moved my DVD to an external DVD case and it would never work with movies, only software disks. I have Late 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks with 1TB Samsung SSD and a 512GB HDD in the DVD slot with my DVD in an OWC external DVD case.
I tried this trick but at first, this did not work because OxED was saving the new file as a text file and not a unix file. I was perplexed until I read the comments below the article and found the tip to use Terminal to change the saved file to a Unix file. I have never used Terminal before and I had no clue what I was doing, but I just followed the steps to a T and it worked. It took two tries with Terminal.
The comment mentioned "Code:" so I typed that along with the rest and it didn't work. I tried it again and this time just typed
chmod +x (with a space after the x) then dragged and dropped the saved dvd file from my Desktop into Terminal and hit enter. Worked great. Thank you. I have my DVD player back.
I also had to play around with some permissions and I had to remove the original file completely from the "A" folder, before I dropped the new file back in.
Took a little work, but I am back up and running. Thanks to all who contributed to this and yet OWC definitely needs to have all this in their manual or even provide a disk or software download that does this automatically.
Here is the trick: http://macenstein.com/default/2011/07/how-to-get-your-external-super-drive-worki ng-in-lion/
Be sure that the new file saves as a Unix file. If it doesnt save as Unix, you will need to:
    Open Terminal.
    Type:    chmod +x
…with a space at the end (and do NOT press enter yet).
Then, drag the saved file you want to change from whereever it is saved and drop it on top of the Terminal window. The file path and filename should automatically fill in (and you should ensure that there’s a space between “+x” and the file path).
    Press enter.

  • Will adding an SSD HD to my late 2008 MacBook Pro make a difference to its performance?

As the title says - this is my only Mac, I can not afford to buy a new one, and it is just dead slow, the most basic tasks, browsing, using Finder are now just time consuming.
I have made as much space on the drive as possible and ran Disk Warrior to defrag it, but it has had a neglible effect.
I've been looking at the Samsung 840 Pro Series - thing is, at 200 Euros, I could just save up a bit longer and get a refurbished Mac Mini or something..

You will notice better performance in read and write tasks, so startups will be faster, and also the times to copy files and create other ones. You won't notice any difference in processes that require GPU or processor performance, as the only difference is your disk.
The SSD will give your MacBook a much better performance, so if you don't have enough money, you can get a SSD and install it. Personally, I don't recommend the Samsung 840 Pro because I have seen multiple cases here of sudden damages to it.
Depending on the Mac mini you want to get, it will have better hardware that will allow you to get better performance in tasks related to GPU and CPU, for example, but the read and write speed will be near the same. It's worth saying that the Mac mini will be useful for more years, depending on the generation you get

  • Adding an SSD to The H50-55

Is there spce for an SSD in the case? Thanks

    hi Win10User
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
This system has a Mini PCIE Port in it.
The only thing is that the Documentation only states that the port only is for a WLAN and does not state SSD.
Data signaling for SSD might not work.
Normally they would include SSD in the documentation if supported.

  • Adding 256 SSD to a new iMAC

History: I have just recently sold my old 2010 Mac book Pro and kept the SSD that came with it and and currently looking to buy the 27-inch  iMac and befor i buy it i was wondering if my SSD i have would work as a second HD i can add to it once i get it. I would preffer to have my Mac boot up on the SSD (and other programs)  and have all my personal file (like Pictures, movies, word doc...ext) on the standered 1T HD.
This is what i am looking to get:
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
    Magic Trackpad
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (English) & User's Guide
I know i can upgrade the Memery to 16G RAM and how to do it myself. I need to know if the SSD that i have (originaly installed  by Apple on my Mac book pro) will work without having problems? Also will i be able to do this myself or will i need to go to apple to open up the iMac to do it for me. if so will apple install a SSD if i bring it in or must i buy a new one with them?

You asked; " if so will apple install a SSD if i bring it in or must i buy a new one with them?"
You are are going to have to ask at the store. I know here in my local area that they is one store that will do just about anything while another is not so willing to do anything with the Macs. It appears to be pretty much dependen on the Apple Store and the personal they have to do the work.

  • Upgrading RAM and adding a SSD to new 27 inch iMac?

Hi all, is it extremely difficult to upgrade the RAM and add a SDD in the new 27 inch i7 iMAC yourself? I have read somewhere that it is extremely difficult and can void warranty.
The new hyper threading/turbocharged 27 inch iMAC can have two drives one conventional and a SDD. But I think the bracket and connecting cable for the SDD is not in the casing unless the AppleStore fit the drive themselves as a customized purchase order.
I have been told by a guy who provides maintenance for mac and PC users in my area that it can work out less expensive to purchase a basic model mac form the apple store then upgrade it oneself making sure to use the proper compatible RAM, drives etc.
I am in the market for either a new generation 27 inch iMac or an 8 or 12 core new Mac Pro but if I thought it possible to upgrade the iMac I would purchase it for the time being as like most of us I am trying to keep spending down to a minimum to ride out this recession!!
    I would appreciate all views.
    Thanks,
    E

    Hi E
Ram is the only thing that is considered user upgradeable,
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iMac_Mid2010UG.pdf
order the iMac with an SSD, and then upgrade the memory yourself with third party ram.

  • Adding an SSD drive to my M7-J020DX

HI, I have been trying to add/upgrade an SSD drive to my Laptop to speed up my PC . I have had nothing but issues. I was able to get the caddy and proper ribbon adapter.
I wanted to do a fresh install of Windows 8 and not clone my 1TB Drive to my 120GB SSD. (maybe this will work if I ony clone the OS fies) For some reason, I can't get my HP to even see te SSD at all. I have turned on and off Legacy in BIOS. I have tried the SSD in both slots with Original HDD unplugged. There is nothing wrong with the SSD as I can see it in other PC's, infact, I formatted it in a Windows 8 PC for troubleshooting purposes. I don't know what I am missing here... I don't see anywhere in the BIOS that even tells me it's installed. If I go to install Windows 8, (VIA Bootable USB) it wan'ts Drivers. But it don't even see the HDD at all even...I have the same results when tryingo nstall Windows 7 as well.
I jucalled HP tech support and Parts,  Apparently, the Laptop is not upgradable to use with an SSD Drive. I find this unacceptable. Why have a 2nd HDD Bay and why Have I seen other posts with use of an SSD.
Is there a BIOS Hack or something I can do to get ths to work?

I was able to finally get it to work. It looks like it was the SSD HDD itself. I went out and bought another one (newer 240GB for $80). I now have it up and running Windows 8.1 on it while using the original 1TB spinner for the data. I wasn't taking HP's word on it not being upgradeable. However, the system did crash after an update. I got the. BSOD "Critical process died" and I couldn't repair or Format it again. I was using a Windows 8 version someone gave me, on a Bootable USB drive. So that might have been that issue as well. I wound up creating my own Bootable USB drive from my original media and that worked. I thank you all for your help!

  • Adding an SSD to my H50-50 ?

I've just purchased the H50-50 desktop computer and wish to add a 250GB 2.5" SSD drive. I want to configure it so that the 2.5" SSD has the operating system on it and everything else will be on the regular 3.5" drive. I notice that there aren't any extra cables within the computer to enable me to add a second drive. 1) What cables do I need and where should they connect to? 2) What mounting adapter plate will I need to install the 2.5" SSD as I notice that the drive fits in via the screw holes in the base of the drive? - (at a push I could just use one mounting hole and use double sided tape to hold it in place as there's no vibration with an SSD) Thank you for any advice you might be able to give. By the way, I'm a bit peeved that the computer only has a VGA port for my monitor as the cable from my monitor is DVI; even my 7 year old laptop had both connections, VGA and DVI. Lastly (and I'm sorry to ask so much) my computer has two VGA sockets, which one is the one for my monitor, the upper one that comes directly off of the motherboard or the other one that comes off of (what looks like) a graphics card? Thanks,Richard

Dear Richard, we have just done this. You will just need a SATA cable to connect the SSD to the one free SATA connector left on the main board and some way to fix the SSD in the 3.5 inch bay available (best done by an adapter plate, but you can also use a improvised method to fix as the SSD because it is lightweight and there will be no mechanical stress during operation). There is only one free power connector available at the cable running to the hard disk, and I used this. I have seen no other connectors from the power supply. With these two connections the installation was working well.As for graphics cables: In addition to the VGA there is also an HDMI port available from the graphics card. You can use an adpater (available cheaply) to connect your DVI cable to the HDMI socket. The VGA and HDMI port from the main board come from the Intel HD 4600 graphics that are part of the core i7 processor, but they are probably disabled by the graphics card so you should not use them when you have a graphics card in place.Hope this ionformation will help. Regardsroeka
