Added Intel 310 mSata SSD 80gb

I just finished migrating the System partition on the 500GB HDD to the Intel SSD card. The Windows Experience Index went from 5.9 to 6.9. The Disk access component was 7.6. Physical installation was easy, but migrating the software was a learning experience.

I used Ghost 15 to clone the C: partition on the OEM HDD instead of the Intel Data Migration Tool. I probably would have used the Intel tool had I been aware of it, but I bought the SDD as OEM and there was no documentation included. The Intel tool is an OEM version of Acronis Home which should work fine.

    Yes, you can.
You will need to purchase a Solid-state drive connector board (includes cable:  For use only with computer models not equipped with an mSATA solid-state drive)

  • X61s compatibility with intel 310 mSata

I've read that the X61s may not be compatible with Intel's 310 mSATA, but have been unable to determine if this is "fixable" with a Bios update. I would very much like to get an mSATA if it is compatible with this great machine.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I believe that there are some mini PCIe SSDs out there. Instead of being mSATA, like the 310, which is essentially SATA over a PCIe interface, these cards work like a mini PCIe card. This generally means that you cannot boot from one directly, because the system does not recognize it as a boot device. These are not that common and could be difficult to find. However, they work in any system that supports PCIe add in cards.

  • Intel Gen 2 SSD 80GB Disk errors- OSX 10.6.2

    Dear All,
I have 2 of the Intel Gen2 SSD's, I have had them in Raid0 since I purchased them, since 10.6.2 I have had continual disk errors in Disk Utility, I decided 10 days ago to ditch the Raid0 and use them singly, I did a fresh instal of SL, and then copied my apps from my Time capsule, all was fine but now I'm getting disk errors again, and really slow performance specifically on save dialogs from Word and from print to PDF, I have to boot from sl disk once every 48 hours to repair the disk, I am at the end of my tether with this, my SSD is running the latest firmware, my home folder has been moved from the SSD to my WDC black Raid0, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I'm tempted to go back to Caviar Black, SSD/Intel/Apple are not ready for the playground.
I wouldn't be tempted, I would go back to the Caviar. I'd make sure 10.6.2, your software, and any additional hardware you have plays nice with that and the disk doesn't become "corrupt" over time. I don't know how much time to give it, but when you're satisfied, clone that system over to a FW Drive or something so at least you know you have a good system tucked away somewhere.
And this didn't happen with 10.6.1, right? How long have you been using the SSDs?
It gets me that this is something that appears over time. That I believe you're saying each time you manage to get DU to report no errors, sometime afterward it does again. Well, as I recently had pointed out to me again, flawed drives do crack under load. But two of them? And for something you really don't want to hear, many of us out here using SSDs have just not seen this, so it's hard to think the fault lies with 10.6.2. Granted I have Vertex and 1st gen 80gb Intels, could this be something only affecting the second gen Intels? I haven't heard that reported either, but who knows, yours may be the first of more to come. I know there are people here using the 2nd gen, maybe they'll write in (MsB, where are you?). From what I've read, the Intels have had more issues than other SSDs, but not of this nature as far as I know.
So again, for my own clarity of mind only, you can get the problem fixed, no errors reported, and a short time later with use they just come back again, and you're saying that this has only come about since 10.6.2. It's bizarre.
Well that leaves one fairly obvious thing to do and one thing you really should do.
On the last, get DiskWarrior, it really is an outstanding program.
On the first... Go back to 10.6.1.
And on that also, tell us how long you've used 10.6.1 with the SSDs. Also, did you use the combo or Software Update to get to 10.6.2? Doing that, using SU, really has been a source of problems in the past.
Also, while every Mac of the same model should be the same, frequently that doesn't seem to be the case. 1 person is affected by something, 10 people aren't. Can you yourself point to anything that may be making your Mac behave differently than the rest. Any special circumstances like heat or electricity?
When I switched to SL it was a disaster for me until I did a clean install and rebuilt my system again. Many people were able to migrate things over successfully but that simply never worked for me. Not one thing could I migrate without it taking a toll on the performance of my Mac. I could never figure that out.
I'm trying to think of things that might make SSDs more prone to damage than standard disks. But then again, it's not damage is it. It's corruption. Anyone here know exactly what that means? There is data and file corruption, but disk corruption? Are they the same?
Well, lastly, and again, I can only think that by going back to an earlier OS can you be sure it's 10.6.2. If it turns out to be 10.6.2 only, then I would be glad to admit that's it, and be wary for my own benefit. In my case though I use DU, Diskwarrior and others utilities like Superduper a lot. I just haven't seen any indication of something similar happening. Please look into getting DiskWarrior. It's pricey but it's saved me on more than a few occasions and really I think it is worth it even if it is the only Utility program you can afford.
I'd like to see your SSDs working with 10.6.2, but if they can't and they work well with an earlier OS, personally I'd drop 10.6.2 and stick with the SSDs. On the other hand if you have only a certain amount of time to get a refund on the SSD's, I'd exchange them for new ones or get a refund and buy a different make of SSD.
It's a difficult issue and you must be extremely frustrated by now. But hang in there and I bet you'll get this sorted out.

  • [Solved] Adding a 1tb msata SSD to a gs70?

Hwllo I just got my Gs70 2PE and i love this thing, i noticed that there is a third msata slot for an ssd and was wondering if i could buy a 1tb model and install it myself. I have never owned any computer with raid so im not sure how it works. could i add the third one? i have 2 128gb ones in now and the 1tb hdd. I wanted to add the third or maybe remove one of the 128gb and replace it with the 1tb.

    Quote from: Pegasus;104524
    Hello
I test the Samsung Sto SSD mSATA on GS70 2OD and some other model and work fine, so should be ok on GS70 2PE.
About the RAID, if you want add another SSD, you have first to broke the actual RAID, this mean lose everything, then create a new RAID (very easy on the bios you can do it). The point are it's useless to make a RAID 0 between HDD/SSD that don't have the same size, because all unit of the RAID will use the same capacity, so if you use 2 x 128 Go and 1 x To, the total of the RAID will be 3 x 128 Go = 378 Go and the space not use on the 1 To are lost :(
So Bro I suggest to don't do that
If you want increase SSD size for C, then better to buy 2 x 500 Go and replacer the actual 2 x 128Go, you can think about buy 1 x 128 Go for add it on the GS70 and create a new RAID, but this is not a big difference and better to use same SSD that original one for avoid some issue. And before broke the actual RAID, if you buy your notebook with Windows, don't forget to create the DVD with MSI Burn recovery
Okay well looking at disk management, the recovery partition lives on the HDD, so if I remove both my 128gb ssds, and just install 1 1tb ssd cant I run the recovery boot off the hdd?

  • Adding Intel 80GB mSATA to T420

Hi, I know very little about computers. I recieved my T420 a few weeks ago and burnt my recovery disc (1 CD+3 DVD's). I also purchased an Intel 80GB mSATA. Can anyone give me some clear step by step directions on how to install it or a link to a page indicating what to do. Thankyou!!!
Keep in mind I know very little about computers.

I burned my R&R to an external USB hard disk, but the steps should be similar.  Steps I took:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T420-SSD-Self-Upgrade-or-Factory-Install/td...
    (0.  Inserted the mSATA.  To do this,  disconnect the power and battery, then open up the panel in the middle of the bottom of your T420.  The slot you need is at the left, with the two wires taped next to or inside it.  Ignore those wires, taping them out of the way if necessary; unscrew the single screw; insert the mSATA card; rescrew the screw; and replace the panel.
For more instructions, see the T420 Hardware Maintenance Manual at http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/0a60007.pdf , p. 73, "1070 PCI Express Mini Card for wireless WAN".  Note that you will NOT be attaching those two wires to your mSATA drive.)
    1.  Used Rescue & Recovery to create recovery media on an external USB drive.
    2.  Removed the mechanical drive (this will make sure R&R restores to the mSATA, not the mechanical disk).
    3.  Used Rescue & Recovery to install the factory load on the mSATA.
    4.  Reinserted the mechanical drive.
    5.  Formatted the OS partition on the mechanical drive, but left the system restore partition just in case.
    6.  Deleted the system restore partition from the mSATA SSD, and resized the OS partition to reclaim the restore-partition space.
    7.  Made sure that hibernation and swap file were disabled, and turned off indexing on the mSATA boot drive, for performance/longevity reasons.
Following these steps, I was left with a partition on my original data disk that still has the R&R code on it; an 80 GB mSATA fast boot disk without wasted space; and an extra set of R&R on an external drive in case of failure.
Once you've done all this and gotten your programs installed on the mSATA drive, make sure to take a full backup.  This will avoid having to reinstall all your programs in case of a failure.
USE THESE INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK.  They are designed to get you started in the right direction.  When in doubt, consult the HMM and/or a Lenovo technician.

  • X220 with Intel Series 310 80 GB mSATA SSD (How do you get Win 7 to see drive

    Hi Everyone,
I am the proud owner of a new x220 with the following spec:
    * i7 2.70GHz
    * * gis mem
    * Bios version 1.21
    * running Win 7 64-bit professional.
    * 320 hd
I am very proud of my self for installing the Intel Series 310 80 GB mSATA SSD by myself (not very technical).
    1. If I hit F12 on boot up the drive is available.
    2. Running Lenovo Think Vantage Tool Box and it sees the Intel SSDMAEMC080G2 drive...
The question I have is that windows does not see this as a drive from my computer..ect.  My question is how to I get Win 7 to see this drive so I can move my win 7 to it and set as a the boot drive.
What step am I missing???  Thanks everyone for your help!!!
    Chris

    Hi, guys
If you whant to use the msata drive as the 2nd drive in the system you've to initialize it.
For making it bootable the are seveal methods. I've used the next two:
    1. I used Intel Data Migration Software tool (based on Acronis technology) to transfer all image from the stock hdd to the new Intel SSD drive 320 Series (120 gb). At this moment the new drive was plased into the external usb box. Then I've booted from the new drive and resized the partitions using the Disk Management applet.
    2. The second method is to use the factory recovery media (USB stick in my case). I did that for the new msata SSD drive (non Intel 128 gb). Insert the new drive, boot from the usb stick, fully recover, reboot into the bios setup, change the boot priority for the new drive, reboot from the new drive, resize the partitions and delete the Lenovo_recovery partition on the new drive. I'm sure the cloning tool will work for msata too.
No actions were carried out with the SSD drives (I mean initializing, partioning...) before data migrating in both cases.

  • Adding an mSATA SSD to an X230

I gather in some parts of the world you can get an X230 with an HDD and an SSD (in place of the WWAN adapter) from the factory, but not in the US.  So, I'm thinking of doing it myself.  My plan would be to add the SSD before installing any of my own s/w, then move the OS from the HDD to the SSD with something like this (http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-OS-to-SSD/).  Set the HDD to unbootable in the BIOS and I'm pretty much done.  I'd be interested in hearing comments from those who've done this, or who might have some advice even if they haven't.  Thanks.

    Involute,
you can clone HDD on msata SSD using some sw like Acronis or Intel (free of charge tool if you use msata SSD from Intel). Install msata SSD, install smth cloning sw on HDD and do it. This solution is better if you have fully installed and tuned system.
If you want to get the system like from the factory just make a Factory_Recovery media, remove HDD, insert msata SSD and launch new image installation. Then insert HDD.
In both case you'll get all 3 partitions on both drives. Then repartition them for youself. You can even delete Lenovo_Recovery partition on system (msata SSD) drive as you have recovery media.
Do not forget to change the boot priority within BIOS setup.
Note, for installation R&R on 2nd drive with installed on another (HDD) drive it'd be better to remove HDD from the bay temporary. After installation you'll get a system with working blue button.

  • X220 with Intel 310 ssd slow boot times

I recently bought an x220 i5-2520 and installed an intel 310 80GB ssd.
I cloned C: using the intel Acronis tools, updated all drivers and firmware and all works well.
However, my boot times are over 1 minute - much less than the 20-40 seconds I see posted on the web.
I have cleaned out a lot of unnecessary items from startup using msconfig, but no major difference.
It seems to me that most of the slowdown is happening after the login. It takes around 30 seconds after that to get to the desktop.
Why are my boots 2-3x slower than others?

    Hi,
I'm running a slightly different configuration, with bios at 1.21, the I7 processor, the Intel 310 ssd and a samsung SSD in the primary drive.  I generally average about 20 seconds to ready for input after inputting the HD & Windows password.
I did create the "Recovery" CD/DVD set and installed to the Intel 310 using the Recovery disks without any problem.  My boot time included the standard Lenovo/ThinkPad software and usually that doesn't cause much delay.
My other software is iTunes, Office 2010, Picasa, Adobe PhotoShop, and VMWare (my real work).  Even the virutal system run quit quickly.
    What SW are you running?
I did a couple of tests with 320GB original HD, and boot time was only 2-3 seconds more.

  • New Intel Chipset and SATA3 mSATA SSDs

Since the 4th generation Intel processors are coming, that means they'll probably support the 4th generation chipsets, QM87 in particular for us.
Since the QM87 chipset supports four SATA3 lanes, I hope this means I'll be able to run an mSATA SSD at SATA3 speeds instead of SATA2.
The speed differences are negligible for humans, but it would be nice to get what I paid for.

There are existing systems with 6 Gbps mSATA ports. The port in the W530 is only 3 Gbps because there is a limit of two 6 Gbps SATA lanes in the QM77 chipset, and Lenovo thought they would be better used for the 2.5" bay and the Ultrabay. Adding more 6 Gbps SATA lanes allows for the mSATA port in the existing design to use 6 Gbps SATA.
NGFF/M.2 supports SATA Express (12 Gbps) as well as 6 Gbps SATA, but will of course require an additional port in the notebook due to the different form factor.

The Intel 310 offers an mSATA interface delivered over a PCIe bus.  Does anyone know if this device could be used as a replacement for the anemic Intel 2 GB TurboCache which shipped with my W700 model 2757-cto?
If so, could it be used as a boot device?
Any help would be appreciated; I'd really hate to buy one and then discover that it doesn't work or, worse yet, damaged the W700.

Hello, could i do msata ssd cache on my laptop with intel rapid storage ?
my friend told me it require capability to raid, but i don't see raid setting/mode on bios ?
and what speed of msata on msi ge60ond ?

All this information is great, but not telling us what USB devices you're trying to use pretty much means we're shooting in the dark as to what the problem can be.
They are right, drivers for Windows 8 are included with Windows 8 USB3.0. So there are no drivers needed.

  • Adding a msata ssd to l430 as boot drive

Is it possible to clone my standard 320 GB HD to a msata ssd and put it in the pci slot on my Lenovo L430 and use that as the boot drive and use the 320 gb HD for storage?

    Hi,
As Hemanth points out, the stock mSATA SSD as shipped (if your L has one) is too small to use as a boot drive.  The stock SSD is intended as a fast cache for the HDD.
However, it should be possible to install a larger capacity mSATA drive and clone to that - or fresh install via recovery media or MS media.  This is commonly done with Thinkpads - mine included.
The mSATA slot is dual-purpose:   WWAN or SSD.  If you have a WWAN card installed the slot won't be available for an SSD.
Note that cloning will probably "kill" the local recovery partition.  It will still be there but not usable for local recovery - so it is essentially wasted space.

  • Can I Install an msata SSD in Envy 14-2010TX (QB422PA)

I have an Envy 14-2010TX Beats Edition (Model QB422PA#AB5).
As the current WD 750GB HDD is quite slow, I was planning on installing a msata (say 80GB) and using Intel Smart Response Technology to provide SSD caching on the larger HDD.
I need the capacity so can't really just swap out the HDD for a SDD (even a 512GB SSD is not enough)
Having taken the HDD out and looked, it appears the system has an msata port under the existing 750GB HDD, but I cannot tell if it's electrically active (I can see the female socket and screw holes as if it's ready for an msata card to plug in).
First, I need to know if this is possible from a hardware perspective (e.g.. is the msata port active, will it be recognised if ssd installed), and secondly, I do not see any related (e.g.. RAID, etc.) entries in the BIOS so how would this be set up?
Could anyone please help with this, possibly through your own experience, of from a HP technicians perspective?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
