Added PATA HD, SuperDrive no longer ejects

Hi All,
So I installed a PATA (Seagate) HD in the top bay of my MacPro, set to master. The SuperDrive is in the bottom bay and set to slave. After booting back up, both drives showed perfectly (I already had a DVD in the drive). I watched my DVD, copied files to the HD, no problems. Then I went to eject the movie. I noticed the Eject key didn't work so I dragged the DVD to the Trash, and out it popped.
Now however, I'm unable to get anything back into the drive. The Eject button doesn't work, nor does Option-Eject, nor does the Eject menu item (/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Items/)
Any thoughts?

At least in most other Mac models the optical drive
is always MASTER. Did you change this when you
installed the Seagate drive or was the optical drive
already set as SLAVE? If not I suggest returning the
optical drive to MASTER and setting the Seagate as
SLAVE. I would also suggest you re-check the cables
to be sure they are seated correctly. Also verify
that your installation work didn't inadvertently
block something or leave something disconnected.
Thank you for your reply. I was always told that in an IDE chain with an HD and a CD drive, the HD always had to be master. (Something about the controller on the HD being better than those in CD drives) So I'm a bit timid to try that, though if anyone else cares to corroberate, then I'm more than happy. I don't think the cables are the issue as both drives transfered gigs of data this morning. Unfortunately when I try to eject, I don't even hear a "thunk" sound of the drive trying to open and being physically blocked. It's just completely unresponsive.
EDIT: I just now got a paperclip and pushed the eject button on the drive. The tray popped out, popped a disc in, and the DVD is now mounted and functional on my desktop.

    Since updating my iphone and adding icloud, I can no longer retrieve my yahoo mail.  I've already exhausted all options in the settings menu on my iphone.  What next?  Thanks!

    I just want to be able to USE iCloud on my phone
    To do that, you don't go to iCloud.com on your iPhone. You use the apps that all your iCloud data is synced into, such as Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, Reminders, Safari (for bookmarks), Photos (for Photostream) etc.

  • Aperture no longer ejecting/unmounting cards

    I just did a complete refresh of my iMac, including a reinstall of OSX and Aperture 3.x.  I've noticed that after importing images from a memory card, and selecting the option to delete images and eject the card, Aperture no longer ejects (unmounts) the card, so I get the warning message when I pull the card out of the card-reader.  Any idea what could have changed to cause that?  Thanks.

    To repeat my question:
    How long do you wait after trying to eject? With a 32GB card it can take a long time time to erase the content after import.
    Unmounting the card after you let Aperture erase the images from the card may take several minutes for a large card. Just wait ten minutes or so, and eventually Aperture will release the card - usually. How long did you wait?
    A safer fix would be, not to let Aperture erase the images from the card, but to eject directly after import without erasing. This way, nothing needs to be written to the card. That is also quicker, and this way you can check, if the import went o.k., before the card will be erased. It is better for the file system on the card to erase the card by reformatting in the camera.

    I have added to my calendar a long event (holiday) that crosses a month boundary. Now when I try to school from one month to the next, I am booted back to the icon screen. Is this a glitch or a fault? Geoff Lamb

    Is it crossing the end of March 2013 ? If it is then there appears to be a problem with all day events on the 1st April 2013 due to clocks changing for daylight saving - if it does include 1st April 2013 then try changing it to end on 31st March 2013 and have a second entry for 1st April onwards (starting at something like 4am on the 1st)

    I have a MacBook Pro laptop purchased in June 2011, and the superdrive no longer works.  Rather than have it replaced, I'll buy a 3rd party superdrive that plugs into the USB port.  Does the external superdrive need it's own power source, or will the USB port provide enough power?

    The Apple external SuperDrive actually exceeds the allowed power draw. Because of this, it is only trouble-free on certain models that accommodate this excess.
    All others require an external Power source.

  • Superdrive starting to eject inferior discs

    Hi all.
    I have a macbook 4,1, early 2008 model with superdrive.
    The internal drive is starting to eject dvds. Although it recognizes legitimate discs(proper discs like OSX install disc), it is starting to eject inferior discs(dvds that come with computer magazine etc). It also has trouble recognizing inexpensive blank dvds, it recognizes about once in three times. Is this a hardware fault? Any thoughts? Thank you.

    "drutil eject" still works, but it sounds as if you're nearing a mechanical failure with the drive. You can have Apple replace the drive - very expensive - or you can purchase a new SuperDrive from Other World Computing and install it yourself. I wouldn't wait too long - you may end up with a stuck library disc and either have to disassemble the machine or take it to Apple to retrieve it.

  • Superdrive no longer recognizes Prodisc CD-Rs

    I have a Matshita DVD-R superdrive (UJ-845C; DPP9) and used to be able to burn 1X-48X CD-R 80min/700MB Silver discs by Prodisc (SKU: CDR80COLOR/BLK).
    However, still within the same lot of discs that once used to work perfectly fine, the drive can now no longer burn them (at any speed or configuration).
    E.g., an iTunes error reads that the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media, and Roxio Toast reports a MEDIUM ERROR Sense Key with Code 0x73, 0x3, while Burn Disc reports Error 0x8002006D.
    My DiscRecording.log suggests that there is a Power calibration area error, but DVD recording works perfectly fine. I have not yet tested other CD-Rs.
    Is there a possible reason and remedy for this issue?
    Thx!
    1.25 GHz Mac Mini G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    The batch of discs in question works just fine on other computers, while mine is able to burn other CD-Rs. I still don't know why the Prodiscs stopped working for me...

  • Superdrive won't eject

    My superdrive worked fine until today. I put a cd in. It didn't pop up on the desktop. When I tried to eject it with the keyboard button, it wouldn't eject.
    I restarted. It sounded like it tried to eject, but didn't.
    I went to support and found the open firmware solution. I tried it, got the ok after eject cd, but it didn't eject.
    I've read through the forum and tried everything I found there to try. I have an extended warranty with 2 years left. Does this sound like a hardware problem? I don't want to be without my computer, but now is the best time to take it in if it needs to go. (I have an Apple Store withiin 20 miles)

    Hi georgiadunn, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
    If you have tried all the suggestions in these Forums then presumably this didn't work:
    You may be able to open the drive if you hold down the mouse button on restart. If this doesn't work, shut down the G5, slide down the silver optical drive gate and insert a strong, straightened paper clip in the emergency eject hole, the possible positions of which are shown in Figure 3 here (you don't have to remove the drive - it is a mechanical release, so you will have to slide the tray out by hand)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88215
    (It shows a G4 but the principle is the same.)
    If you find, and can then convince AppleCare, that the drive is faulty, they can "at their discretion" send you a new one to fit yourself. The instructions are here

    Please post again if you have any questions.

  • Superdrive no longer supported!

    Hello! I have an iMAC I received as a gift from late 2007. For some reason, I no longer can burn CDs or DVDs, or read them for that matter. I get a message that says, 'Your Mac does not have a supported Superdrive. Please note that while you will be able to work on iDVD projects, you will not be able to burn a DVD disc.' I had this problem once before, and I shut it down, unplugged the power cord, and started it back up. That worked the first time around, but I tried it again, and I had no luck. I checked utilities, and it said I no longer have a super drive. So what happened? Did it crap out? I have yet to upgrade to Lion. I still use operating system X.

    Obviously I didn't search widely enough! Just seen another post which gives the following solution:
    Go to Finder / Macintosh HD / Library / Driver Support /
    and delete all of the related nastys in there, in my case it was the notification exe. Once you have deleted these dump them out of your trash as well.
    Might as well leave this on here in case anyone else comes on in a panic like me!
    Thanks,
    Luke

  • Superdrive not working, ejects disks

    My Superdrive is not working anymore, it's being recognized in the disk utility but when I insert any disc I hear it reading it for about 20-30 seconds then it just ejects it out.
    What would possibly be wrong with it and how can I fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

    My THIRD replacement superdrive arrived today. Guess what? No matter what disk is used, the disk is NOT supported; it is ejected. Being a contrary person, I turned the sperdrive upside down, that is the Apple logo is down; the same rejection.
    My conclusions are:
    1. The whole **** lot of air superdrives MUST be returned back to the Chinese factory.
    2. Any air superdrive MUST be tested by Apple before shipping.
    3, I am in the process of writing a letter to the Apple President Mr. Job asking that he stop hustling new products and FIX some of the core products that don't work.
    4. I also suggest that as Apple are incapable of making workable air superdrives, a company such as Hewlett Packard be franchised to make air superdrives. I have a 15-year old HP laserjet that worked the FIRST time it was plugged and it is STILL working.

  • Superdrive won't eject from CD-Eject button on keypad...

    but it will from the menu eject icon. I've replaced the keyboard with a brand new (Apple) keyboard. Same thing.
    Okay...further investigation has yielded an additional complication...the whole top row on the keypad is not functioning. Mute, Volume up/down and eject have quit. The problem is I'm not certain when this happened so I cannot tell you if it is software related.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    TIA
    G5 PowerMac D2.0GHz PPC   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Another superdrive question. When using Eject key or
    dragging disk icon to trash, the disk unmounts but is
    not ejected. If I then use DiskUtility, and try to
    eject the disk, I receive a 'Disk in Use' error.
    Rebooting does not help. I have consistent success
    by booting holding down the Control-OPtion-F-O keys
    and typing 'eject cd' then booting the mac, but who
    wants to do this often? The eject problem happens
    perhaps 30% of the time, but once it starts I have
    to resort to the modified bootup to correct.
    Suggestions?
    Do you have the "Energy Saver" System Preferences set to allow the drives to sleep? Some optical drive will not wake up to eject. OSX can do the dismount but the drive won't do anything.

  • After updating imovie with mavericks, clips added to a project no longer have an orange stripe. Any suggestions?

    When I add clips to a project in imovie, the used portions no longer have an orange stripe on them. I recently installed mavericks and updated imovie. I could not find a setting to enable or view this feature. Thanks for any suggestions.

    After using imovie some more after the update,  it may have to do with the location of clips and the project.  If the imovie project and the clip are saved in the same imovie library, the orange stripe appears when I add clips to a project.  If the movie project and the clip are not in the same imovie library, the orange stripe does not seem to show up. To make sure I can alway see the orange stripe for clips I have added to a project, I keep the clip and project in the same library. Hope this helps.

  • Superdrive no longer reads data DVD's

    Since the upgrade to Leopard, I can no longer read any of my data dvd's.
    It reads cd's and music dvd's fine, but none of my data back up dvd's will read.
    After a minute of grinding, the icon appears, but if i try to read any of the content or copy any to the HDD, it grinds and grinds and pretty much crash's the machine.
    I have to close the lid on my 1ghz 17" laptop, and then unplug it, and pop the battery out. Then restart.
    It worked fine with Tiger, and my G5 reads the dvd's fine. So it is a software issue.

    This is a generalized “DVD reading problem under Leopard on Matshita DVD hardware” post. My apologies if it is in the wrong place, but you all seem to be closing in on my own problem.
    My PPC G4 running 10.4.11 reads/plays my audio CDs and my movie, data and OS installation DVDs with no problems. It has a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104 DVD reader. My (late 2006 white) iMac Core 2 Duo with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J DVD reader running 10.5.1 has SERIOUS problems.
    It reads/plays audio CDs but it clicks and thrashes around before finally ejecting most of my movie, data and OS installation DVDs as well. If I persist (repeatedly re-inserting the DVD) it may finally recognize it but most of the time it does not.
    I have tried going back to Tiger with my original grey installation discs but even when I can get them to be recognized there is no optional choice to archive my current system folders – its erase or nothing. Sigh. Something happened with DVD recognition/reading at 10.5.
    Any advice from the community would be most welcome. Apple techs - what are your thoughts?
    Thanks.

  • NewElementInHierarchy() - Adding New Elements, progressively takes longer when adding multiple siblings

    With my ESTK script, users select model numbers from a list and then the script inserts an element with a model number entered into an attribute, one element for each model selected.
    When adding a large number of elements, each additional sibling element takes a little longer to add then the previous element. Adding 250 elements can take upwards of 3-1/2 minutes or more. While adding 20, 50, or 75 elements happens quickly, without any noticeable duration. It’s somewhere above 110 is where it starts to be noticeable.
    I even used $.hiresTimer and wrote the value to the console for each time a model was added. Since the timer is reset back to zero (0) each time it's called, it was easier to notice that the amount it incremented from one element to the next got progressively larger.
    Any thoughts as to why it’s taking so long or thoughts on what I could do to speed it up?
    The structure looks like this:
    <PartModels>
          <NoteText>Text</NoteText>
          <Model ModelNumber=”ABC01”/>
          <Model ModelNumber=”ABC02”/>
          <Model ModelNumber=”DEF03”/>
          <Model ModelNumber=”DEF04”/>
          <Model ModelNumber=”XYZ01-A”/>
          <Model ModelNumber=”XYZ*B”/>
          <Model ModelNumber=”XYZ500”/>
    </PartModels>
    The script is somewhat straight forward: cycle through an array of the model numbers selected, add a new element for each model number and set it's attribute value to the model number. This is the short version:
    Function InsertModelElements (modelsToIns, insElemLoc, GVdoc) {
         var newEleId;
         var newElemLoc = insElemLoc;
         var elemDef = GVdoc.GetNamedElementDef(“Model”);
         for(var i = 0; i < modelsToIns.length; i++){ // modelsToIns is the array of models selected
              newEleId = elemDef.NewElementInHierarchy(newElemLoc); //ElementLoc based on NoteText first, last, or not present
              SetAttribute(newEleId, "ModelNumber", null, modelsToIns[i]); //more robust function to set attribute
              /*Which also works for setting attribute*/
              //var vattributes = newEleId.GetAttributes();
              //vattributes[0].values[0] = modelsToIns[i];
              //newEleId.Attributes = vattributes;
              /*At one point I tried using a new element location from the last inserted element, no change*/
              //var newElemRange = setElementSelection(GV_doc, EleId); //function that returns range
              //newElemLoc = newNewElemRange.end;
    Any help is appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Trent

    Thanks Russ,
    I seriously considered trying copy/paste and started to modify the code to do so. But I couldn't let it go, the answer had to be right there in front of me, just it's been too long since I've worked with this stuff, I'm not able to see it. Then it dawned on me what is happening.
    In an earlier test, I placed a timer on each action that is looped through. For example, I start with an container element that has 200 children elements, each with a specific/unique model number attribute. All 200 existing elements are deleted and then replaced with 250 new elements with a different value for the model number attribute. The timer was placed after the Element.Delete() method and ElementDef.NewElementInHierarchy() method. What I noticed with the timer is that each element deleted was deleted faster than the previous element (so it progressively took less and less time to delete an element). And of course the opposite was noticed for inserting elements, each element inserted took longer than the previous element inserted.
    These elements can be inserted in two areas of the structure, one of the areas has fewer format rules that impact the formatting and is actually a little quicker. This led me to the cause being the EDD format rules. The area that takes longer has quite a few extensive format rules that apply. Every time an element is inserted or deleted, FrameMaker runs through those rules to format the content of the elements. Since the rules apply to parent, first, last, next, previous, etc., FrameMaker has to apply format rules to all the elements in the structure that the rules apply to (which are extremely complex because of the various elements, attribute values, and combinations that can be inserted).
    Removing or thinning down the FormatRules in the EDD, it does get quicker. But each of the FormatRules are needed. So using app.ApplyFormatRules = false; right before the elements are deleted and inserted works great. But the key is to set ApplyFormatRules back to true before deleting the last element to be deleted and before inserting the last element to be inserted, so it will cycle through all the format rules of the EDD for all the elements in the hierarchy those format rules apply to. Setting ApplyFormatRules to true and assigning the ElementDef to the last element also works [EleId.ElementDef = GV_doc.GetNamedElementDef(insElemType);], but only before any other functions are performed or different elements are added.
    doc.Reformat() isn't going to reformat the content correctly after the fact because the element was created without the format rules, so it just reformats the content of the elements without the format rules.
    The FDK version that was created 10 years ago had the same problem of running slow when a large number of elements were being inserted, but was still an improvement over having to manually insert each element and type in the attribute value, so it was lived with.
    It's now working amazingly fast. I hope my explanation of what I think is happening, including the cause/solution, is understandable.
    Sincerely,
    Trent Schwartz
