Added Ram, now what?

Okay,
I've recently added 1Gig of RAM... by taking out the keyboard.... the works, but I still feel as if there's more to this than just plugging it into the slot.. What must be done now that I've added the RAM as far as getting the computer to recognize that it's there? -if anything?
Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Thanks for your response.
okay, well, I wasn't sure how to tell, but I opened system profiler, and it shows the RAM there but doesn't show it as active or something like that... I don't recall exactly what the term was that was displayed next to it...
If all else fails, I guess the simplest thing to do is take it out and go through the install process again.

  • Added Array, Now What?

Forgive my incompetence about adding an array, but all the posts about people losing everything has me apprehensive about restarting the system. I do have stuff backed up, but do not want to create a mess if something goes wrong at this point.
I added a RAID 5 array, filling out the lower half of an Xserve. Raid admin recognizes it under arrays & drives. The arrays are listed under the picture as 1 RAID 5 and 2 RAID 5.
    Now what?
Do I just use "Add System" in Raid Admin? (right now it shows one system with an address) or, do I shut everything down, restart and then run disk utility according to the manual?

You should enable journaling. It doesn't affect performance in any meaningful way.
What journaling DOES do is prevent the system from having to run 'fsck' on the disk, should it be shut down uncleanly. On a 1 TB volume, fsck can take an hour (or hours!) to run, and the system cannot finish booting until this time, so what you'll see is that your system appears to "hang" at boot time, and unless you know what's going on and have the patience to wait 1 or 2 or 3 hours until it completes, will probably panic and think your machine is hosed. I've seen it way too many times. Enable journaling, please

  • Added RAM - now dark screen on reboots or startups

I added 4GB (2x2GB) to an original 2GB (2x1GB) configuration in my Mac Pro Early 2008 in the past couple of weeks. The RAM matches Apple spec. Now about 50% of the time when I restart or power down and start-up the machine, I get no screen display. Doing a PRAM reset cures the problem but it seems a little too coincidental that I would start having video card problems the moment I added CPU RAM. Any suggestions on how I should troubleshoot? I followed Apple instructions on pairing the CPU RAM. My RAM pairing is probably a bit unusual given the 6GB but it's supposed to work. I did notice the first time I pulled the cover after installing the additional RAM that I had some red LEDs in the RAM card area but they went away when I pulled and re-seated the cards. Have not checked since. I did try to vacuum out the dust when I had the lid off - maybe I did screw something up re the video card???
I also tried removing the additional RAM and going back to the original RAM configuration once and the problem persisted. Hummhh - any sage advice on troubleshooting?

I have not tried that yet, and the next time this happens (it's sporadic) I will try that scenario. Still seems telling to me that this only started AFTER I installed the additional 4GB and as part of that process had to move the 2X1 GB RAM modules to the correct location. Seems highly unlikely that the old RAM would all of a sudden be the culprit. I guess anything is possible - the other thing I should mention is that I ran the Apple RAM test (short test) and it checked out. Even the short test seemed to take an hour or so but the 6GB RAM passed.
Unlikely or not you have to troubleshoot properly and the old RAM may well be the problem for various reasons.

  • MBP Slowed so much after upgrade, added RAM, now it crashed many times

    Hi,
My MBP slowed so much righted away after I upgraded to OS X Mavericks, I upgraded to 16GB RAM as suggested, and the problem of slow got resloved, but now it crashed all the time, totally crased over 10 times within couple days(only few hours of using), I am pasting my MBP info here, please help to identify the crashing problem, is it the bad RAM? or some program caused it?   I brought my 16GB RAM at macsales.com.
    This was my old thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23847638#23847638
I use VM Ware. The crash only tell me "your computer had a problem" or something like that, but it won't say which program caused it. Sometimes I was using firefox, it got crashed, sometimes when I try to open VM Ware, it crashed, sometimes, I leave my MBP there, it crashed itself.

I've recently onboarded to a new project where one of the major complaints is application performance, which ties directly to SQL Server.  DB structure and query efficiency notwithstanding (trust me, I feel this is a multi-point problem), I'm simply
trying to be sure the underlying hardware is positioned as well possible before challenging our dev team.
SQL was originally running in a VM with 4 CPU's, 8GB or RAM for an 80GB db.  I set up perfmon to gain some statistics to support some hardware changes.  I saw some numbers that indicated it's memory starved (which I knew without the stats,
but needed them for justification) - so I had our datacenter increase the RAM to 64GB.  Now I see a very high buffer cache-hit ratio, which is good... but my CPU utilization has gone from near zero to > 90%.
So TL; DR - Is there a document that assists with determining how many CPU's a SQL Server should have?
I'm also adjusting some other settings, such as max deg of parallelism; and running queries to see the top cpu time offenders... etc.
    Thanks.

    >>>>but my CPU utilization has gone from near zero to > 90%.
---This first thing to check if CPU is at 100% is to look for parallel queries:
-- Tasks running in parallel (filtering out MARS requests below):
    select * from sys.dm_os_tasks as t
     where t.session_id in (
       select t1.session_id
        from sys.dm_os_tasks as t1
       group by t1.session_id
      having count(*) > 1
      and min(t1.request_id) = max(t1.request_id));
    -- Requests running in parallel:
     select *
       from sys.dm_exec_requests as r
       join (
               select t1.session_id, min(t1.request_id)
              from sys.dm_os_tasks as t1
             group by t1.session_id
            having count(*) > 1
               and min(t1.request_id) = max(t1.request_id)
          ) as t(session_id, request_id)
         on r.session_id = t.session_id
        and r.request_id = t.request_id;

I currently have a 2011 Mac Mini Server. When using FCP X, what is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?
    Thanks people,

    Hi Tom,
I just wanted to ask you about what you said about the color correction. To be quite honest I'm not sure what the best workflow is, and I haven't gotten my feet wet in multi-cam editing. Basically my work-flow has been.
    1) Import from the camera as optimized media - I found that adding color-correction at the import stage cause a severe hang with my tape-based Canon unit.
    2) Color-correct the imported files before loading any files into a project
    3) Drag files onto the timeline
    4) Click on the color-correction box
    5) Start editing - Usually I have one camera zoomed a little tighter on the singer, one on the whole band, and my iPad or iPhone camera at different angles so I start cutting things according to who is the focus of the moment, add a Ken Burns effect every here and there, Titles, an occassional transition effect.
    6) Add music effects after the looks are taken care of
    7) Export
Are you recommending clicking on the color-correction box after everything is done?
    Thanks - TZ

It is true that the only way to sync your Mac with iCloud is to upgrad.  You need to be running OS X Lion 10.7.2 or higher in order to sync your Mac with iCloud.  At this point, you can upgrade directly to OS X Mountain Lion from the version of OS X you are now running (10.6.8).   You can purchase and download the Mountain Lion upgrade from the Mac App Store for $19.99.  After upgrading you will see iCloud in System Preferences.  This guide explains how to sync your Mac with iCloud after upgrading: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/mac.html.
Once all your devices are signed into the same iCloud account and you have turned on your iCloud data syncing, you will be able to keep them all in sync using iCloud.  You will still have to sync with iTunes to manage your iTunes media such as music, movies, podcasts, etc.  You will have the option to either continue backing up automatically with your computer when you sync with iTunes, or to back up your iOS devices automatically to iCloud every 24 hours (as long as they are connected to wifi and your chargers).

  • Added RAM and now Applications won't open

I just added RAM (8GB)to my computer and now my InDesign will not open.
    I did the OptApple+PR reset.
Do I need to do something after upgrading RAM so things run smooth?

Will the computer start up normally? If not, is the led on the front blinking? If it does start up normally how much RAM does it think it has?
Have you tried going back to the original RAM?

I tried starting and restarting. I tried rebooting.  I tried deleting mail account and adding in again.  I
    Now what do I do?

I think I have solved this problem on m iPad2 by:
    1.  Reinstalling my email account.
    2.  Changing the settings on my PC to stop it from deleting my email from the server before my iPad could load them.
My PC uses Windows Air Mail.   I made no known changes to my PC from the time I was running iOS6 to the installation of iOS7 ???   MS did come out with several updates this week??
    3.  In the same time frame when I was scrolling through web pages the Control Bar popped up every third stroke.  It is very easy to change the setting of the Wy Fi setting from On to Off while deleting the unwanted Control Panel without any indication.  This means that the Wy Fi must be constantly checked to make sure that is ON???
The three problems at the same time have made this the worst mess to fix in 12 years of internet use.   The fix has lasted for about 8 hours at this point, Tomorrow will tell.

iMac late 2009 reads only 2GB RAM,I have re-installed the card 10 times now, what else could I do?

Please give us some more details on what exactly has gone wrong with your iMac.
What size RAM module/s are you trying to install and where did you purchase the RAM module/s from?
RAM has to be installed in matched size pairs.
Make sure the RAM module clicks into place. You need to apply a little bit of force to get the module to slide in and clIck into its module slot location.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
If you purchased RAM from ANY other source and still can't get the RAM to work, return it for a full refund and buy RAM from the sources I have listed.

  • Some thoughts on adding ram to G4 sawtooth

I've gone down the list and read all I can about adding ram to my G4. It now has 2-64mb pc-100's, 1-256mb pc-100,and 1-128mb pc133-333. I would like to max it out since it's been freezing up during graphic work when I have more than one Adobe application running. Am I correct in thinking that's the problem or could there be something else going on? I have already expanded with a 1ghz processor, and 120gig hard drive. I'm running Panther. Any suggestions? Also I read somewhere that it matters what slot you put each ram chip in. Is there some order to this?

Claire, In the Finder under the Apple/About this Mac/More Info/Memory you will see the Memory Slot order of each stick follow by their size. Take a look here she is replacing memory in the first slot, also the size should be printed on the side each stick.

  • Adding RAM to 1.6 GHz G5

I just finished a rather strange process of adding RAM to my G5 which I thought I would share, in case it helps others:
First of all, I have a 1.6 GHz CPU machine, which has 4 DIMM slots. According to the Setup Guide, since there are only 4 slots (not 8), you need to use 333 MHz, PC2700 DIMMs (not 400 MHz, PC3200 DIMMs).
When I first got my G5, it came with 256 MB of RAM (2 x 128 MB 333 MHz, PC2700). About a year ago, I added 512 MB (2 x 256 MB 333 MHz, PC2700), bringing the total up to 768 MB. This addition went smoothly, without any problems.
Recently, I decided to replace the original 256 MB of RAM, with two more 256 MB modules, bringing the total up to 1.5 GB, so I ordered "1 GB DDR400 PC3200 2x512 DIMMS" (Part # M9653G/A) directly from Apple. Note that the RAM Apple currently sells is 400 MHz, PC3200, not 333 MHz, PC2700. In fact, before placing the order online, I called Apple to ask about this, and the person I talked to assured me that this would not be a problem, and that my 1.6 GHz would work with the 400 MHz, PC3200, despite what the manual says, so I ordered them.
Upon receipt, I removed the original pieces, installed the new ones, and my G5 would not acknowledge their presence. It said I only had 512 MB. I called Apple to report the problem, and they suspected it was simply faulty RAM, so they sent replacements. When I got them, I installed them, and got the same results. I called Apple to tell them it still wasn't working, and they had no idea why. Once again, I pointed out that they were sending me 400 MHz, PC3200, not 333 MHz, PC2700, and they still insisted that this was not the problem, but I started to suspect even more that it was, especially after trying to upgrade twice.
In order to test this theory, I ordered RAM from MacMall. This time I ordered 1 GB, in the form of 2 x 512 MB, 333 MHz, PC2700 (made by Kingston, Manufacturer Part No. KTA-G5333/1G). When I received these, I moved the original replacement RAM up into the top two slots, where the original ones were, and placed the two new ones in the bottom two slots. When I tried to turn the computer back on, it wouldn't. The light on the front would flash once, then pause, then flash once again, then pause, etc. When I checked the manual's troubleshooting section, it described what two, three, four, and 5 or 6 flashes meant, but not one. URGH!
At this point, I had no idea what was wrong, so I took my G5 to my local Apple store to ask them. The guy there had the idea of putting one of the original replacement RAM in one of the two top slots, and one of the new replacement RAM in the other top slot. Then he put one of the original ones in one of the two bottom slots, and one of the new ones in the other bottom slot. Believe it or not, not only did the computer turn back on, but it also recognized the new total of 1.5 GB of RAM!!!
This was such a strange process that I thought I would share it, in case someone is also currently going through this process, or wants to in the future.
Hope this helps, and I also hope I've made it clear exactly what happened. If anything isn't clear, please let me know, and I'll try again.

PC3200 is fine for that system. The problem was that you were installing the RAM in the wrong slots.
The RAM must be installed in matched pairs, one in the top, one in the bottom, working out from the middlemost pair.
    Viewed from the side
    ======== Slot J14
    ======== Slot J12
    ======== Slot J11
    ======== Slot J13
So, one pair of identical parts goes in J11/J12, and another pair goes in J13/J14. Doesn't matter if the bigger pair is first or second.
This wasn't in the manual for your Mac?

I keep getting the message You need a newer version of Pages to open this document. but I don't have an update available in app world. I did the update but it doesn't seem to be registering on my macbook pro. Now I can't open any of my documents as I keep getting this message. Now what???

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • The new hard drive is in - now what?

    Hi everyone,
Please bear with me. I've suddenly become possessed by the idea of taking apart a Mac and putting new stuff in there. I am a complete novice in this respect, but I figure everyone has to start somewhere, right?
I've got an iBook G3 Clamshell (300 MHz, 288 MB RAM) that I'd like to soup-up. It's currently got a 3 GB (867 MB available) hard drive and is running Panther 10.3.9. Eventually, once I work up the courage, I'm going to undertake the (apparently) monumental task of prying this thing apart and putting a new hard drive in there. I'm hoping to put an 80 GB hard drive in there and put Panther on it.
I've looked around on the Net for a post-hardware installation guide, but I can't seem to find anything that addresses my needs or speaks my limited tech language. If it would be possible for a Mac-savvy person on this board to walk me through the steps immediately following the installation of the hard drive, I'd be very grateful. I know that there are several things that need to be done - I want to make sure that I don't do them in the wrong order!
So, I've (incredibly) taken apart the iBook Clamshell, stuck a new hard drive in there, put everything back together, and I've got my black retail OS X Panther installation CD's ready... now what?
Issues that are of particular concern: formatting the hard drive. How do I do this?
Also: firmware. Do I need to update this? If so, do I do it before or after I format the hard drive? The iBook's current system profiler is quoting me a 4.1.7f4 figure for firmware. Will this change and have to be 'redone' after a new hard drive is put in?
Of course, there are probably a whole bunch of other issues I haven't even considered. What do you do to ensure the smoothest and most efficient installation of the OS?
Again, as I'm very new to this madness, I appreciate any advice or info you guys have to impart. Thank you!
    PowerBook G4, iBook G3 Clamshell   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    JJJJS,
I suggest you install OS 9 first anyway. By doing that you also ensure you install the OS 9 hardware drivers required for OS 9 native-boot. Your iBook originally shipped with OS 9 and therefore all firmware upgrades are OS 9 installers only. In order to apply a firmware upgrade you have to boot into OS 9 natively. Once you installed OS 9 and updated it to at least 9.2.1 (Mac OS 9: Available Updates) apply the firmware upgrade for your iBook: Mac OS X: Chart of Available Firmware Updates.
Regarding the boot-question: It actually does not matter how you do it. Turning power on will show the ? anyway. All you need is electricity to open the optical drive bay. Restart by presssing CTRL-Eject.
