Added views = added file size

Hello,
A general comment and a quick question:
Comment:
I am working on my 1st 3D PDF; I exported a .3ds file from 3DS Max @ 4.5 mb., imported into Adobe Acrobat 3D with a Mesh Quality and Texture Quality both reduced to 80%, saved my file as pdf file @ 1.4 mb (really awesome). I then added 12 views, hiding various parts, saved my file which increased the file size to 6.8 mb = 450 kb per view.
I opened up PDF Optimizer>Clean Up>Compress entire file, saved my file, which dropped the file size down to 1.92 mb(super, very happy).
Question:
In the hopes of getting my file fize even smaller, is there a general rule of thumb when working with .3ds files in Acrobat 3D;like... the best file compression routine/settings/procedure to use when compressing .3ds files embedded in pdfs? Is there documentation based around general compression and best practices for compression for different file types when exporting from the native 3d programs, importing to Acrobat 3D and saving as .pdfs? I can't imagine making my file too much smaller, but one can always hope.
Thanks,
~Chipley

Hey Chipley,
Given that the .3ds format does not give you access to Acrobat 3D's PRC conversion format, I think you're on the right track with reducing Mesh and Texture Quality. Those two areas tend to make up a lot you file size. I think the only way to really do this with a .3ds file type is to possibly reduce the Texture quality a little more. The use of the PDF Optimizer was a great idea. It would be hard to give you better idea than the approach you're already taking.

  • Viewing Folder/File sizes in list view

Anyone know of a good app to preview folder/file sizes across the entire HD?
Since I transitioned to a MBP I suffer from juggling my data from HD to external FW drives, especially when I return from traveling or I leave to travel some more. So I find myself in the time-consuming process of hitting "Get Info" on a few hundred folders to find where the data-heavy files exist on my HD, so then I can move them off to FW drive to get more HD space. I practice good file management but even still podcast downloads or project files from my students, colleagues, etc. can get out of control. I can narrow down the sources to Movies, Pictures, etc. and the Applications support files in my Library but would much rather be able to view the folder sizes in one list and locate the heavy files much faster. Maybe there is an Automater workflow? Or I just haven't been able to find the preference in the viewer so that I can see folder sizes, not just the "--" under the size column. I haven't been able to figure it out.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Viewing combined file sizes?

I'm new to the Mac, having come to it in the last couple of weeks from many many years of PC use.
I have a question about Finder:
In Windows Explorer, if you select a few files, the status bar at the bottom of the Explorer screen would tell you what the combined file size is of any files selected. I cannot seem to find a similar thing in Finder, is there a quick and easy way to do it?

You can press Command-Option-I for the File Inspector, and leave it open. It will go away when you aren't using the finder, but will reappear whenever you go to the Finder, and will show the total size of any selected files.

  • Viewing file size

I'm new to Lightroom.  I want to view the size of my files in Lightroom, but I can't seem to find it.  I've looked in the Metadata list, but nothing shows up.  Also, I'd like to be able ot view the file size in my loupe view, but when I go to my view options, I only find 'megapixels and "cropped dimensions", but I want file size.  can anyone help me with this?

At the top of the metadata panel in Library, you need to select Exif and IPTC instead of leaving it on Default. Then you get most things showing up, including FileSize.

  • WMV to h.264 files size issues

I am using the Flip 4 Mac to view my WMVs with QT Pro 7. I want to export them to H.264 (or other MAC friendly format), but the new file has a size thats about 3x larger than the WMV file. Example a 233meg WMV file went to a 779meg file in the h.264 format. I would us iSquint or Podner but I do not want to reduce a 640x480 res to the smaller size of 320x240. Any ideas on how convert WMV Files and not lose any of the res, quality, and keep the files size about the same or smaller.

Trucker (does that mean you drive trucks?) I did for thirty years and am glad to be seeing the world from a 19 monitor as opposed to a huge windshield.
If the files play (via the flip4mac component) why not just leave them alone?
Any time you export, format to format or container to container, you introduce artifacts and could be adding to the file size by not using the source compression scheme.
Many WMP files use very low audio quality settings. Have you opened some of your exports and used the Movie Info window to compare settings?
H.264 has amazing video playback qualities and a 320X240 export can be viewed at "double size" without so much of a penalty to video quality.
Check the audio settings at export, too. Try to match the original source file settings.

  • File Size Discrepancy Between Photoshop & the Finder

I'm trying to be as brief as I can, so here goes. The specific application (PS) is irrelevant, I think. This is about why an app shows one file size & the Finder shows a different file size. In this case, it's a huge difference, due to the file being an image.
I imported into PS CS, from a CD, an original image, which the Finder shows as 269.4 MB. The file format is TIFF, and the bit-depth is 16, not 8. The Finder shows it as a "TIFF Document." Now. I did a Save As and edited that as a master image file. So, I have two files: the original and the master.
I substantially cropped (deleted) pixels in the master file. So, at the same 16-bit depth, the master file should be smaller in size than the original. Right? However, the Finder shows the file to be 433.6 MB in size! Photoshop shows the file to be a more realistic 185.8 MB in size. Why is the Finder showing such a huge file size? Why is the Finder storing 247.8 MB more than I need? The Finder shows this file as an "Adobe Photoshop TIFF file," so there has been a change in format. The file is flattened; no layers, etc., are involved.
One clue could be that the Finder is storing the larger file size to accommodate Photoshop. If one multiplies 185.8 MB by 3, the result is close to the 433.6 MB figure. The 3 stands for the three color channels (red, green, blue) of each pixel (data element) in the image.
The original image, however, is stored correctly by the Finder. Photoshop and the Finder agree on the 269.4 MB file size. If the above scenario were true, the Finder would be storing the original file at three times the size as shown in Photoshop. In other words, there would be consistency in what the Finder is doing.
I suppose I could just ignore the discrepancy, but I have hundreds of images to process, and I don't want to have to go into PS every time to get a true reading of file sizes. The Finder should be accurate in doing that.
I may be in the wrong forum re: Photoshop, but here I think I can find some expertise re: the Finder, since the Finder's storing procedures are in question, to my mind. It's definitely an app/OS interface problem, as I see it. Simply, I edit a file downward in data, save it, yet the Finder saves it at a larger size.

...do you think a lot of cloning & healing brush might have added to the file size, even though I cropped the image?
Yes, depending on your History settings. The more you work on an image, the more history it accumulates. The more different states and sanpshots you save in the History palette, the bigger the file gets as you work on it, because you're storing (within the file) complete information about the file's state before and after every individual change you make to it. What I don't recall is whether that all gets saved to the file in a Save As, or whether the history is flushed each time the file is Saved.
I should warn you that I am by NO stretch of the imagination a PS expert. I was still using PS 5.0.2 until last February, when I upgraded to CS2 (knowing it will be years before I have enough hardware horsepower to run CS3). I'm a rank beginner with CS2, and if someone else wants to jump in here and point out that I'm all wrong, it will be no surprise to me. And because I never used CS, I don't know whether what I'm describing in CS2 is even relevant here.

  • File sizes are coming about a bit big

Okay so I've been having this problem for a few days now, and I can't figure out how to fix it. I am rendering a 30 second clip recorded in 1080p in a quicktime format, with H.264 compression and no effects added and the file size is coming pretty large. I also tried it in H.264 format with the same codec and the file size is pretty much the same. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You say you've been using the same render settings you've always used and the same workflow you've always used, but the result is different. Clearly, something has changed. Computers aren't whimsy-driven, drama-loving, capricious machines. They only do what they are told. Now, it could be that something outside of your control changed, but it would help us all try to help you figure it out if you gave more information.
Have you installed any software recently? Have you installed any codec packs recently (such as k-lite)? Has your computer updated itself recently (Adobe software, Windows, etc.)?
Screenshots of your AE render settings would be useful. Are you running version 11.0.4 of AE? What OS (I'm guessing Windows, but which one)? Etc.

  • How can I display file size in Finder

    Hi folks,
I am trying to figure out where 40GB of data is hiding. I would like to see file sizes in the Finder window associated with my folders in Mountain Lion 10.8.2..  I'm having, what seems to me, a strange problem. When I 'Get Info' on my Hard Drive, the disc space left is only 40GB out of 120GB (ie used being 80GB). My confusion is that when I painstakingly go through the files, I can only account for 48 GB with 'Get Info' on each folder. This is a rather combersome process and I am hoping there is a work around for viewing the file sizes within Finder and not having to open 'Get Info' on each and every folder like I have been.
    I have a MacAir 13 inch 2011
    Thanks!

Thanks for your time and suggestions, dominic23.
I looked through both links and sadly, none of these suggestions have worked. I have tried many on my own since posting trying to figure out why the volume is being doubled on my hard drive. I've deleted log files, and done a sweep with Onyx to no avail. Strangely, the option of seeing the volumes under 'About this Mac' and 'System' does not have a listing for storage. Weird. I am the only user/administrator on this computer and I don't have shared files.
    I'm just stumped.

  • Compressing file size from within a portfolio?

I've got 16 files within a PDF portfolio ranging from 80MB to 227Mb and I'm trying to compress them, the portfolio size is 1.41GB.  When I view the file size in Bridge as I compress each file I don't see any change in the individual file sizes nor in the Portfolio size.  Are the original files being compressed or are they stored seperately within the portfolio file?  And any idea why the portfolio size nor the original file sizes are changing after PDF optimization?

    Thanks, Leo.

  • Ridiculously Large File Sizes

I have an older 4th gen iPod and have not connected to iTunes in a while. Today it appears that my Disk space is completely full despite having 18.5 GB total space and only 1800 or so songs on the iPod now. I go into iTunes and view the file size column and almost every file is labeled 1,438,276.04 GB in size! I'm guessing most of these songs were originally encoded at 128 to 160 kbps so should be in the neighborhood of 3-6 MB per song. What is going on? FYI - I have up to date versions of iTunes and firmware.

I am having the same problem after moving my iTunes Music Folder to a network drive. I can not sync anything to my iPhone now because iTunes incorrectly interprets file sizes and every file exceeds the iPhone's capacity. For example, a MP3 that iTunes shows as having a size of 171,108,700 GB is actually 40.7 MB. I am using a Addonics NASU2 adapter that employs Samba, if that makes any difference. I did not have this problem when my iTunes Music Folder was on a hard drive connected via USB.

I have added Open in browser add ons in Firefox browser, but still not able to see the .shtml files on local machine.
Can any one please tell me how to view .shtml files in Firefox?

SHTML files are regular HTML files that make use of Server-Side Includes. In some server configurations, the special file extension is required to instruct the server to parse the file for SSI code.
If Firefox doesn't recognize the file type, it is likely the MIME type is incorrect.

  • Additional file size is added to my PDF when attaching it to an email in Outlook for Mac 2011

I'm generating PDFs from Adobe Pro X. I have a 7.23MB PDF file that becomes a 9.8MB PDF file when attached to an email.
I'm trying to keep the file size as small as I can - why is the extra size added to the PDF?
I'm on an IMac, using Outlook for Mac 2011 and Adobe Acrobat Pro X/Indesign CC to generate the PDFs.  This isn't an isolated issue, it happens when I attached word documents as well and is extremely annoying!
Looking forward to hearing from anyone out there (desperately!)

  • Can I increase swap size by just adding a swap file for permanent?

    Hello,
I am doing installation of oracle 11gR2 database on Linux.
the swap area size is not enough. so can't go thought OUI's pre-system check before installation.
the system administrator says, he really feel hard to find out any free uppartitioned disk space for adding more to current swap.
he wants me to see if he can add a swap file (rather than an entire device/partition) for swap space.
    I checked docs:
How to Create a Swap Device on Enterprise Linux [ID 432991.1]
    it says,
"If no free, unpartitioned disk space exists, a swap file (rather than an entire device/partition) can be used for swap space as a *temporary*"
but why temporary? why not permanent (I don't want to have trouble in future) is there anyone can help me to confirm?

  • Adding Click Tags to Flash and also reducing file size?

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows how to add a Click Tag to a Flash movie?
I have the file finished but they require Click Tags added to each file.
Also my file is currently around 100kb and they need it under 30kb (last time they got someone to reduce my file to 30kb from 110kb), so Im sure this can be done but not quite sure how. I am using Flash CS4,
    thanks,
    Paul

I would recommend going to 15 if you are going to play with frame rate.
If you want to know how data rate effects the size
double-click the setting for your movie
    look at the inspector
Under the summary tab compressor show you how big the file size will be at _ data rate etc.
Changing the data rate will be reflected here.
When a client doesn't want a file over 15mb I use this tool to know and understand how data rate and other settings effect the overall file. This works for h.264 but may not be the same for every setting.

  • File Sizes Adding vs. Deleting

A simple question that defies logic (to me) -- Why is it that if I delete an entire album of 15 tracks I gain back .037 GB of avilable space in my iTunes library, but if I add an album of 15 tracks of comparable duration it takes up .15 GB of space, close to five times the space you get back if you delete such an album.  I don't get it.  Makes no sense at all (to me).
Thanks for your help.  I just want to know, I know nothing can be done about it, but I really need to know why this happens.

File sizes are different because of the encoding format.
Bit rate * duration = file size.
You deleted small file size and re-added large file size.
