Adding 2nd Monitor - HP3065....resolution issue

Hi,
I just received my new 27" iMac with the upgraded video card.  I hooked up my 30" HP 3065 monitor using the Apple Displayport to DVI adaptor.  I am only getting roughly 1280x900 resolution on the HP monitor.  I am very suprised if this new video card would not drive a second 30" monitor at a much better resolution.  I think I have seen posts regarding a dual dvi adaptor, but I can't seem to find it again.  Thanks for the assitance.
Bill

ok so after a little more digging I found that it boils down to KMS, and since i have a nvidia card the nouveau driver. I just switched it to early start mode by putting it in MODULES="" in the mkinitcpio.conf.
The early start works and I have a nice resolution right from the start, but it obviously doesnt solve the initial problem of it moving to the wrong monitor.
might the "Force Modes" option be a possibility here?

  • MBP 15' 2011 Mini display port to LED monitor/TV resolution issue

    Hello,
I have just bought  a Mini Display - VGA adaptor which I am plugging to a Samsung 23' LED monitor via a VGA/DVI adaptor. I manage to get a clone view but unfortunately, the maximum resolution offered is 1650x1050 when my Samsung LED monitor has resolution of 1920x1080. Therefore, part of the screen remains black.
... also, when I plug the Mini display port to VGA to my Philips 47' VGA port, I got a message that there must be a problem with the connection and again, maximum resolution offered if 1440x10..  and therefore 20% of my TV screen space remains black.
At last, when I launch Windows7 via bootcamp, this is even wost : when I select the max resolution (1440x10..), the pictures remains freezed on my TV and I can't even move the mouse (while the mouse is moving on the MBP screen...). Only coming back to a very small resolution 800x600 or so will enable me to get control of the win7 desktop on my TV...
Thank you in advance for your help

If you are using the monitor in Mirrored mode, its resolution setting will always be exactly the same as that of the built-in display. I presume you have the high-res 15" MBP display, with a native resolution of 1680 x 1050. If that's true, I suspect your monitor is indeed in Mirrored mode, and that's why you can't set the monitor to its native 1920 x 1080 resolution. If you press Command+F1 to toggle the mnitor into Extended Desktop mode, you'll be able to set its resolution independently of the built-in display. Or if you use only the external monitor, with the MBP display closed, you'll be able to set the monitor's resolution to whatever it supports.

Stacking one video adapter on top of another is usually a recipe for trouble. It's always best to keep things as simple as possible. Use one adapter that gets you from mini-Displayport to whatever input you want to use on the TV or monitor.

  • Adding 2nd monitor

I am trying to hook up 2nd monitor to my desktop. It has 2 dvi plugs. I have dvi to vga adapters on both plugs . The top plug puts out signal to monitor but the bottom does not.  I swiched monitors to the plugs and still just the top plug will support a monitor. Any idea if the bottm plug is a dummy plug and needs a video card or how would i find that out?

Thank you for the additional information.
Both DVI ports can be used at the same time:
*Integrated video is not available if a graphics card or an Intel processor ending with “P” is installed.
A processor that supports graphics is required for integrated graphics to be enabled.
Integrated graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (DX10.1)
Either integrated graphics or the PCI Express x16 slot are usable at one time; they are not usable concurrently.
Use of both DVI ports at the same time is supported.
If you have a local retailer who sells the adapters it would be a good idea to buy another one.  If it doesn't work you can always return it.  There is no other reason that you shouldn't get output from the port.
If you want to increase the performance of your system you could install a dedicated video card.  This would require a power supply unit (PSU) upgrade, also.

  • 2nd Monitor Cable

Looking for a "clean" video cable for adding 2nd monitor to 24" iMac.
The back of the computer faces the world. Would like to have short
12-18" monitor cable (dreaming) and not have to use Apples adapter attached to 6' folded up vga video cable. And of course white would be nice.
Second choice would be the Apple adapter and just a short male/male vga cable.
    thanks
    john thorne

I don't think you'll have any luck avoiding the mini-DVI adapter, but here's
a source for male/male VGA cables in various lengths -- unfortunately,
    nothing short AND white.

  • MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?
    Chris

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

  • Can I use a 2nd Monitor at 4K resolution (quad hd, 3840 x 2160 pixels)

HP Envy TS 17 Notebook, Product # E4S19UALaptop is running Intel HD Graphics 4600, and I have 16Gb memory installed. I use a 2nd monitor all the time via the HDMI port - works great.  Both the laptop and the current 2nd monitor are running at 1920x1080 resolution (HD). I would like to attach a 4K monitor - (UHD-1) 3840x2160 resolution - 4 x "regular" HD (twice the horizontal and twice the vertical resolution). Will this laptop be able to operate the 4K monitor at 3840x2160 resolution (even at 30hz would be okay - not for games but rather for word processing, spreadsheets, software development)?  Don't want to invest in the fancy new monitor if the laptop cannot drive it! Here is an exampe monitor: Samsung 28 Inch Ultra High Resolution LED Monitor (U28D590D), available on Amazon.com. Thanks!

Thanks for the information! As a suggestion, I have a copy of that manual, and it does indeed state precisely the information that I needed. Funny thing is, I looked in the TOC and the Index for anything related to external monitors and HDMI, and there wasn't anything that pointed to that page.  Perhaps for future User's Manuals, the TOC and/or Index could include such references. Either way, thank you so much for the help! Also, for folks who are interested in higher resolution external displays, there is the option to use USB devices such as that from www.plugable.com to attach devices. I don't yet have their USB 3.0 4K compatible one, but I have been using their USB 2.0 HD compatible one for several years so that I can have 3 monitors (built-in, external, Plubable USB) - and it works very well. Flawless operation, though refresh rate is slow (not good for gaming). Which works for me, because it is mainly for surfing and email.

  • IMac does not detect correct resolution of 2nd monitor

I am attempting to use my 42" LG HDTV as a 2nd monitor for my iMac. The native resolution for the LG is 1920x1080 but the iMac only allows me to select up to 1600x1200. It seems to think that the LG is a smaller screen than the iMac as well and my images are stretched. The monitors are also disproportionate, for example, if I expand a window so that there is an inch of space on all 4 sides on my iMac it will overwhelm the screen of the larger monitor so that only about 2/3 of the window is visible. It's as if the iMac thinks that the LG is in 4:3 display mode.
I am using a mini-DVI to VGA adapter. How can I get full resolution from my 2nd monitor?

The (analog) VGA connection is limiting your resolution. Idealy a (digital) Mini-DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI cable should allow the full resolution in Extended Desktop Mode.

  • Second monitor detection and resolution issue with iMac

    Hi All,
long time reader here, got a lot of helpful tips, thanks to all who post!!
I have a 24" iMac, Intel based, with OSX 10.5.8.
I bought a Viewsonic 22" monitor to use along side my iMac when using CS4 and I do a lot of photography. Now the problem is that sometimes my iMac recognizes it as VA2213w and other times it see it as VGA monitor. When is sees it as the VGA monitor the resolution changes a bit, even though it has it on its highest setting 1920x1080 @60hz. My tool pallets on the screen are a bit fuzzy, readable but not the best. I'm using a mini dvi to VGA adaptor as the Viewsonic only has a VGA plug. Could this be the issue? As I have read a lot of the problems here and they seem to be all pointing to the adaptor. If so then why does my iMac sometimes see it as VA2213w monitor and then on other times as VGA. I'm doing nothing to the display other than switching on in the morning.
There doesn't seem to be any consistency! Its driving me mad. I can't seem to get it back to recognize the display as VA2213. I have clicked on detect displays etc etc.
It was working fine all week and then suddenly last night it went back to seeing it as a VGA monitor only. Any help would be appreciated. I have no cursor issues, just the resolution and monitor detection.
    Regards
    Fergul

    Hi All,
Well the issue seems to be the cable. I had an older TFT monitor that I was using and when I bought the above viewsonic, I just simply connected it to the existing cable. It wasn't till I was about to send the monitor back for one that had a DVI connection that I decided to use the VGA cable that came with the new monitor. What can I say, there hasn't been an issue since my last post which was a few weeks ago. Even when the iMac goes to sleep and awaken, no probs. Thanks to those that posted, its appreciated!
    So far so good.
    Take care.

  • Screen resolution of 2nd monitor

    Dear all,
i am working on an application which uses 2 monitors.
i have a VI which measures the screen resolution of the screen.
i want to know the screen resolution of the 2nd monitor.
how can i get that ?
    thanks,
    ritesh
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You could use an app property node, set to display -> AllMonitors. Index this with an array and unbundle the result. This will give info on the bounds of the screen. By subtracting left from right and top from bottom,. you can get the size of the screen.

  • 2nd Monitor issue

I've been using a 2nd Monitor (ViewSonic 1080p) with my MacBook for several years.  After recent upgrade to Snow Leopard, MacBook no longer recognizes the 2nd monitor in the Preferences.  Monitor/cables are fine and work with another laptop OK. Do I need a software upgrade?, or will I be forced to purchase an Apple monitor.  Puzzled

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion p6-2029uk Desktop Computer. According to the specs this model has Intergrated AMD HD Graphics that have been disabled by the factory installed discrete PCI Express x16 AMD Radeon HD 6450. The DVI-D port and VGA port behind the "plastic covers" will not work unless the discrete graphics card is removed.
    Assuming the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6450 card has a DVD-I port and an HDMI port, you should be able to connect the monitors as follows;
    Computer > HDMI-to-DVI cable > HP 2011 monitor
Computer > DVI-to-VGA adapter > VGA cable > secondary monitor
    Alternatively, you could remove the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6450 card and use the integrated onboard DVI-D and VGA ports as follows;
Computer > DVI cable > HP 2011 monitor
Computer > VGA cable > secondary monitor
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • Adding navigator panel to 2nd monitor

I love the 2nd monitor feature in LR2, but it might be cool to allow the navigator to display on the 2nd monitor and disable on the main one. I'll get over it, but it seems to be a bit limited on what can go on the 2nd screen. ..as well as having to hover over the scroll bar to use the mouse wheel in grid mode. It doesn't work by simply being over the grid. ..however it works fine in the grid mode on the main monitor in the library regardless. :(
Love the program.. though it seems to run much slower than LR 1.4
    Thanks!

  • I'm having lots of issues with Dreamweaver CC on my 2nd monitor.

I cannot open new files, or create new files... the pane doesn't display. Works fine on my Macbook Pro Display, but not on the 2nd monitor using Thunderbolt. I also have lots of odd behaviors when attempting to edit code. The selection jumps all around... I tried uninstalling and reinstalling fresh, but still having the same issue. Has anyone else been experiencing this?

According to Adobe staff, a problem was introduced in Yosemite that is causing funkiness with secondary monitors is what I meant.
It seems related, not that it's the same exact issue.
Personally, I'd roll back to an older version of DW if that second monitor was necessary to my workflow within the program until Adobe or Apple push a patch.

  • Indesign CS3 2nd Monitor Issue

    Hi there,
For some reason, recently, I can't get my indesign document to shift over to my 2nd monitor.
I have no problem moving the toolbars and palettes, they appear fine - but when I try and drag the actual document over to the other monitor it simply doesn't appear. It isn't locked as I can move it over to the right, it just won't show on the second monitor.
I'm sure this has not always been the case and it is proving frustrating as I want to have two documents open on seperate monitors.
Is there a preference that I have turned off in indesign?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Matt
P.s I have attached a screen grab to make this clearer

That's because it can't be done in CS3. The document must remain within the application.
The only way to accomplish this is to stretch the application across both monitors.
This capability does exist in CS4.

  • U2913WM screen resolution issue cant set higher than 1920x1080

I have two Dell U2913WM monitors set up on my Alienware 17 laptop. The video card is a Geforce 880M. the highest resolution I that I can set my monitors is 1920x1080. is there a way to set the screen size larger to support the wide screen? I'm running windows 8.1.
    Thanks,

I actually figured out how to setup dual U2913WM monitors on my Alienware 17. Took about 3-4 hours of troubleshooting and some lucky Google searches.
First of all for those out there trying to use a widescreen monitor with a laptop. Do not run your monitors through a docking bay. They simply do not support the higher resolutions. At best you will get only 1920 x 1080.
If you want to run at native resolution of  2560 x 1080 then you will need to connect the monitor to your mini DisplayPort. You will also need to set up the monitor in the nVida control panel.
If you want to run dual U2913WM monitors you will need to slave the 2nd monitor to the first. Using the DVI to mini display port. see the following links:
    thinklightly.com/.../dell-u2913wm-setup-1
    and
    thinklightly.com/.../dell-u2913wm-setup-2
Again you will have to set up the monitors in the nVida control panel for them to work properly. Also dont forget to set up the input sources using the monitor config, as shown in the set up 2 link above to get the 2nd monitor to work.
You will have to also configure your sound output because for some reason it will default to the monitors and you wont get any audio output till you do.
Lastly Dell.... if you are reading this. It's a heck of a product and I love the monitors. But please this is something that should be made clear to customers on what they need to do to run these monitors in native resolutions. it's pretty ridiculous the setup I had to go through with zero documentation. It's pretty common to run multiple monitors and to try and run them through a docking station.
    Plus side:
Also an added benefit to going through this is that my frame rate has increased when now using the mini DisplayPort rather than the Docking Station for running my monitors.
    Minus side:
I have black bars along the sides and top of both  U2913WM monitors, it wont go full screen. Apparently it's an issue when running your monitors through the displayport. I tried overriding this in the nVida control panel but nothing works and the Auto adjust on the monitor is not configurable when using in this mode.
If anyone has any solution for scaling the screen to use the full monitors in native resolution while connected through the mini displayport I love to hear it.

  • 2560 x 1600 is gone from my display settings (2nd monitor)

I've been running my 15" retina macbook pro for more than a year now with 27" DELL monitor and it has alway been using 2560x1600 resolution display.
In the past year i've had no issues with mirroring my screen to big screen TV using Apple TV, however today something weird happened.
As usual i mirrored my screen using Apple TV to watch some videos and i had to change some of the display settings to get the best view on my TV.
Afterwards i switched off the mirroring feature and now my 2nd monitor (DELL 27") is displaying 1920x1080 only. I looked at all my options on my display settings (using ATL+click ) and 2560x1600 is gone missing from the list. Im frustrated and couldn't find an answer to this problem, please advice.
    Couple things i tried;
    - restart & shutdown
    - reset NVRAM & PRAM settings
    - changed mini display cable with another
    - reset monitor settings
    Weird find:
I tried to mirrored  my macbook pro to apple TV again to see the display settings. Guess what, the option for 2560x1600 is now back on the list and working (visually) just fine. as soon as i turned off the airplay display my 2nd monitor turns back to 1920x1080.
Note: the display on my retina macbook pro is working just fine, no problem at all. this is only showing on my 27" DELL U2713HM.

Hello! Just want to ask about mirroring: when you MIRROR the Retina MBP 15" to your Dell Monitor (2560x1600) : do both the MBP and Dell Monitor look sharp and crisp?
    I'm asking because I'm also considering a monitor that's at 2560x1600.
    Thanks so much!
