Adding 512mb ram doesn't boot up my MSI-6585!

My mobo is Max 648, MSI-6585 and I have Kingston KVR333X64C25/512 ram.  I had installed it in first slot, moving 256mb PC2700 to other slot.
It will not boot up, and there were diagnosis leds light up telling me it's a fault memory or not installed properly so I took it back to shop and exchanged for another one.
And had a go with it, iy's the same as before.
I have been downloading test report and it states that this ram will work!
Is there anything I am missing? ?(
Installing ram should be straightforward??

Actually, 256mb pc2700 ram comes with motherboard works fine.
But my pc doesn't boot up with 512mb ram installed, even on its own (does boot up but produces some errors in windows XP)
However, I have checked everything and there's one thing i'm unsure about, I noticed that Hyper Threading is enabled on bios even though my intel CPU doesn't have HT.  I have disabled it but i haven't test 512mb ram yet (with HT disabled) as i need to know what is causing this ram problem.  Could enabling HT causes problem with rams or nothing at all?
I was contacted by Kingston support and they asked me if i have updated bios in my mobo and i checked, it's AMI 3.31a which is the latest at the moment as i have only received mobo a week ago.
But I have found other 648 Max mobo, MSI 6585 Mobo (without HT) it has bios version 1.5 as the latest.
My mobo manual logo say 648 Max (but didn't say HT)...could be mixed up?? ?(
But I assumed mine is 648 Max HT because my bios screen showed its AMI v3.31a which is like that since I receive this mobo.
Also could bios settings effect rams installed?

  • Added 512mb ram to G4 iBook - down to 256mb. What gives?

I added 512mb of ram (ram specs straight from G4 manual) to my G4 ibook for a total of 768mb of ram. I checked this in system profiler - perfect! 4 hours later my book froze and wa-la! I'm down to a total of 512mb ram. The 256mb installed (came w/ book) is ok and the extra 512mb i added today is down to 256mb. It's working but i lost 256mb. Anyone know why?

    Hi Panfer,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I am trying to piece together your problem in my head so please bare with me. So you added 512Mb of RAM to your soldered 256Mb and now it only shows 256Mb. I believe you RAM is defective or not properly installed. Where did you purchase the RAM module? Here is where you can find the manual provided by Apple on installing RAM. Try taking the module out and reinserting it.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • Satellite L30 10Y doesn't boot with new RAM modules

    Hi,
just regged with this forum as I am having a memory upgrade problem.
I have read through a few of the memory problems on here and all users say its a comaptible memory issue. I had Hynix 512MB RAM in my laptop and I purchased 2 x 1GB of Hynix memory both of these are matching sticks to the installed memory but when I installed them my laptop wouldnt boot at all. It would only boot if I had one stick in at a time.
I tried switching top and btm ports and even when one stick was installed it says in XP, Vista and Windows 7 (yes I have tried all systems) 896MB available. I even tried using my other Hynix stick but it only booted and showed the highest stick of 1GB (896MB usable in Windows 7). After reading all the threads I'm just wondering if this is a hardware fault or is there a fix in the Toshiba world or perhaps in the Toshiba world the L series is nearly obselete and not worth the bother to help out the people who unwittingly bought thier merchandise.
I apologise for being a bit down on Toshiba but a laptop which states what it can run and doesnt a company should hold its hand up and say yes there is a fault and help deal with the problem.

You are seeing 896MB because the rest is reserved for the Graphics Card VRAM.
Sometimes RAM can simply be not compatible, due to timing incompatibilities or RAM chip/controller design differences.

  • PC doesn't boot when adding PXI card

Got a problem today. I have a PXI1042Q chassis running to a PC
The chassis had a slot free and I added another PXI5922 and the PC stall at the bios splash screen
    More into details:
The PC is a DELL Optiplex GX620 running XP (current update) with BIOS Rev. A07
LabVIEW 2011 full Dev as august 2011 distribution
    PXI chassis 1042Q filled with:
    1: 8360 (1.0.2.0)
    2: 6652
    3: 5124
    4: 5900
    5: 5922
    6: (5922)
    7: 5422
    8: 6251
    Slot6 free, no problem
Add another 5922 in slot 6 , system doesn't boot and stall at the BIOS start splash screen
    Free slot6: no problem
Pull out slot5 5922, enter slot6 5922: no problem (system found new card, installs driver..., selftest OK)
    Reinstall slot5 5922: no Bootup
Pull out Slot6 5922: no problem
Before I start shuffling the cards (well some of them ) any ideas someone (at NI) ?
Or might there a DMA/PCIchannel/Interupt limit?
(I just want to avoid wild card swapping ... )

  • Pentium III 512mb RAM

I have an old Compaq desk pro (museum piece), Pentium III, new 512MB Ram, new 180GB hard drive that was given to me by my employer years ago. I recall when the machine was new she was relatively fast. My main PC crashed, both hard drive and back-up
drive died within 3days of each other (thanks Seagate) What is the most efficient way to get some speed back?. Yes, I have already heard "use it as a boat anchor" and buy a new system. I just don't have the wallet fat, but my ex-wife
    I keep her "In Style!"
    Thanks

Here are a few things that may help to speed up your XP computer. Not all of them will necessarily apply to you but look through the list and run those that seem appropriate:
    1. Make sure you are free from malware as that can slow it down. If necessary, run your ‘anti’ programs.
    2. Although XP supposedly runs on 512MB of memory (RAM), adding more if you have less than about 1GB will help it run better. It will behave even better with 2GB. To check how much memory you have, right-click My Computer, click Properties and the General
Tab shows how much is installed.
    3. Run Disk Cleanup via Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk CleanUp. Now, defragment the hard drive (not on an SSD) via Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Click on the drive
    and choose Defragment.
    4. Check the disk for errors. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type chkdsk /r and press Enter. Allow it to run next time you restart the computer or restart it now.
    5. Don’t turn off your antivirus program, but check if it’s running a scheduled scan when you switch on the computer. If it is, reschedule it for a more appropriate time.
    6. You’ll get a slightly faster start up if you optimise the boot files and applications by running a special defragmentation (not on an SSD), i.e. in a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type cmd and press Enter to open a command prompt then type defrag C:\
-b (note the two spaces) and press Enter.
    7. When you have a slow boot, check that no external drives have media in them. If they have, experiment by booting with it inserted and without.
    8. Remove unwanted programs that run when you switch on the computer. Bear in mind that it’s not necessarily how many programs run at start up, but which of them affect the computer’s performance. If possible, look at the program’s options/preferences to
see if it can be stopped from running at start up.
If there is no option, run Microsoft’s Autoruns from the right pane here
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902 It doesn’t need downloading nor installing. Run it and go to the Logon Tab and remove the tick alongside the programs you don’t want to start. Right-click an entry and choose Search online for more
information about it. It is completely reversible if you unintentionally stop a program from starting up.
Also, the built-in system configuration utility (msconfig) can be used, but its primary function is to troubleshoot start up errors. Note that some programs use a service to start them running.
    9. You can use Process Explorer to see which services/programs are using which files. To determine which process is using a particular file, click Find at the top, type the name of the file and click Search. To see the svchost processes, let the mouse pointer
hover over each svchost.exe in the left pane. Download it from here

  • Large DVI Display & adding more ram

    Hi all
I want to expand my Mac-Mini from 512mb to 2gb. Can I do this upgrade without backing up my files? I'll have a Apple Pro do this of course. I'd also like your input on LCD dvi monitors that will give me good quality display with 5.1 surround sound.
Thanks, the Apple discussion forum is awesome
    Web dude

Upgrading RAM doesn't involve any work on the hard drive where your files are stored, so a backup is not essential for that purpose - however, Daddypaycheck is right, you should be backing up important data as a matter of course, because as much as these systems are generally very reliable, failures do occur.
A good, simple, backup strategy could be nothing more complex than adding an external drive of the same size as the internal, then using software such as SuperDuper! to duplicate all files from the internal to external.
If your files are important enough to keep, they're important enough to secure!
On the subject of LCD monitors - I would separate your interest in 5.1 surround sound and focus on the best visual display quality you can afford. Dell's widescreen digital displays are typically good. If possible however, you would ideally want to try the display with your system before making a decision.

  • Tecra 9100 - Installed extra 512mb RAM but it's slowed down my computer!

After much fumbling around trying to install my new 512mb RAM, I switched on my computer to find it boots much slower. A message popped up saying 'Memory Module Added' and my computer shows that 768mb is installed which is correct because I already have 256mb installed in Slot 1.
So why on Earth is my computer even slower!? I bought it to speed up the thing! My computer is slower to boot, is less responsive and much better off with just the 256mb of RAM installed.
I think I might have damaged the RAM or Slot 2 because at first I inserted it in wrong. They should have made a video demonstration on how to install it because the manual didn't help me that much!
The RAM is from Crucial and supports my laptop because I ran the tests to decide which RAM I need.
    Can anyone please help me!

I'm a bit puzzled as to why your laptop would slow down after a memory upgrade. Like Kingston, Crucial is a recognised brand and therefore you should have no compatibility issues. The memory will tend to run at the speed of the slowest module, as is the case here.
While a properly earthed anti-static wrist strap may be the ideal procedure, I usually rely on earthing myself on (say) an appliance which I know is fully grounded immediately before touching a memory module. Alternatively a radiator or other item which might be earthed. Of course this depends on your countries electrical regulations :-)
You must avoid touching the contacts or surface - always best to hold the module only by its edges.
As another poster has suggested, remove the 256MB module and replace with the (new) 512MB Crucial module and check the laptop boots OK with just the 512MB module. A symptom of bad memory is when it causes the PC to fail to boot or the PC freezes at any point (either within seconds or after a period of time).
If this fails, then download the memory diagnostic tool from Microsoft web site (you may want to do this from another PC). I cannot remember the full name or URL, but it is the one recommended by XP when a memory-related error is reported. The software extracts to a bootable floppy or CD and carries out a very comprehensive memory test.
Let us know how you get on.

  • My mac is slow, crashes if iPhoto is opened, doesn't boot sometimes

    Hello.
In the last time, my MacBook Pro is very slow and crashes sometimes if I open iPhoto or some other programs.
Sometimes, there comes a black display with some thin white lines and then I have to restart the computer.
Also, sometimes the mac doesn't boot right (you see only a grey display after the apple symbole).
I already repaired the system with Disk Utility and erased it to install a backup of my system.
    Thank you for your help!
    Best regards....

I am using mkinitcpio already: /boot/grub/menu.lst:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd0,2)
    kernel /vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/hda4 ro

    my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
    MODULES=""
    BINARIES=""
    FILES=""
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide filesystems"
I tried removing scsi and sata, since my root is on an ide disk. But the problem persists.
also recreating an image using mkinitcpio or reinstalling the kernel26beyond package using pacman doesn't help.
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how this problem might be resolved.
It seems like a trivial issue since the systems basically works fine otherwise. However, I can't figure it out by myself, I have tried for a week.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I suddenly was having a lot of trouble booting. My system would just freeze with a blinking cursor. I thought it had something to do with my floppy drive because if I changed the boot priority in my bios to boot from the hard disk 1st, the system would boot but would hang for a very long time in areas, and as long as 5 minutes loading uevents. I suspected this was a udev problem.
I issued a few commands to reset udev, thinking maybe recent updates didn't take effect, which did the trick...
    # udevtrigger
    # udevcontrol reload_rules
After that, everything is back to normal. I'm still learning about udev and I'm still fuzzy about a lot of the techy stuff.

  • IBook G4 doesn't boot

    Hi,
I just bought a broken iBook G4 on eBay thinking I would be able to fix it without replacing the logic board. The iBook doesn't boot properly. When I press the power button, I can hear the SuperDrive start up, then the screen with the gray Apple shows up and the OS starts to load normally. But when that screen goes away and the blue background comes up, it just stops there... no "Loading Mac OS X" window with the progress bar. I figured that this may have been a deviation of the iBook G4 logic board problem where people used clamps to pin down the left side of the iBook and hold the faulty chip to the logic board, allowing the iBook to boot. I gave it a shot, but instead of using clamps I tried putting a small rubber shim on top of the faulty chip inside of the case to see if it would work. The first time I booted it up after I placed the shim, it worked fantastically. No hanging at the loading screen, no sluggish performance.
That was the way it worked for a couple of days. However, the booting problem soon returned. I tried booting from a Tiger reinstall disk to verify/repair the disk/permissions, but the iBook hung at the same blue screen. I didn't have the original install discs that came with the iBook, so I couldn't run a hardware test on it. I also tried booting from a Leopard install disk to no avail. Resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, and PMU did nothing as well. I even went so far as to replace the RAM in the expansion slot with RAM that I knew was working, but the iBook remained broken.
The strangest part of this was that the iBook worked perfectly on another computer when put into TDM. I was able to verify/repair both permissions and the disk from my Power Mac G5. Even though the iBook's screen becomes scrambled with random colors and lines after a few minutes in TDM, it functions just fine on another computer. I was even able to successfully boot my Power Mac and iMac from the iBook in TDM. Seeing as this was possible, I tried reinstalling Tiger on the iBook (in TDM) remotely from my Power Mac. It worked like a charm. Following that reinstall, I downloaded and installed all of the software updates. Then I tried to boot the iBook natively again, but to no avail. It still hung at that same blue screen.
At this point, I suspect that there is something wrong with the logic board that I am unable to fix without completely replacing the logic board itself. That's sort of disappointing, but I guess that's just the way it is. If anyone has any input to this, feel free to respond. Here are the iBook's specs:
    CPU: 1Ghz (1064Mhz)
RAM: 256MB soldered, 1 expansion slot open
    HDD: 30GB 4200 rpm
    Screen Size: 12 inches
    Optical Drive: Combo Drive
For the complete list of specs, see this page: http://support.apple.com/specs/iBook/iBookG4_Early2004.html
    Thanks,
    -Trevor

    Trevor,
I just took the heatsink off and I see the GPU. However, there are multiple parts to it.
So that would be called a daughter card. The problem with a daughter card is that the possibility of a reballing/reflowing failure is increased.
Should I place a shim over the whole chip or just one part of it?
It's that whole daughter card that has the problem. I've got a post around here somewhere. Here's the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6051715&#6051715
    The picture is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/3835w2
Also, what material should I use for a shim here?
Probably the most elegant solution would be to use thermal pads like the ones that are already there. Don't build them up too much.
    What about from underneath?
My fear is that a metal shim will short the GPU and damage the logic board permanently. But I also fear that an insulating shim will not conduct heat as it is supposed to and cause the GPU to overheat.
Dale at Superior says that chip doesn't put out much heat but better to be overly cautious. I wouldn't use metal since there's no give to it. What's directly under that 9200 daughter card? One of my thoughts was to shim from both sides.
Where did you put that first shim?

  • Adding more RAM to Tiger

My ibook has 512MB's of RAM. I am happy with this. However since next year I plan to return to school to get a Masters in Ministry, I may need more RAM. From 2001-2005 while I working on my undergrad I used a Performa 6360 which had 136MB's of RAM + RAM Doubler. I was able to run some 20 apps at one time (or more) without a major slowdown. I cannot do this with Tiger, and since I plan to get the OSX version of Dave to access other PC's on the network (since whatever is built int OSX pales in comparison to Dave). On my Performa 6360 Dave was a necessity, since the campus dumped using Macs in 2002. I remember my 1st year (2001-2002) I could access a number of Macs on the Appletalk network at the time. But after the Fall 2002 semester the mac got dumped. Some students still used Macs, but fewer and fewer used them in the 2003-2005 years.
So my question is. Will maxing out my ibook to a gig of RAM although me to run some 20-30m apps at one time (like I could on the Performa) or was OSX Tiger just not designed for this?
OSX Tiger is much better than OS 9.1, but not in all areas as OS 9.x and before do have their advantages over Tiger.
    Thanks,
    John

Actually, OS 9 does not have any advantage over OS X. You had 136 MB of ram plus RamDoubler, why do you think 512 MB of ram will be less adequate?
RamDoubler merely did what OS X does as part of how it works. It did not give you more ram it just allocated more to the app up front while dropping background apps as low as possible. This is what OS X does.
If you were running 20 - 30 apps with 136 MB of ram then they weren't ram hogs at all and it's very likely you can run them without adding more ram now.
OS X handles virtual memory much better too. In the old days I could run 2-3 apps at a time, now I can run 10-12, and most of mine are major ram hogs like Photoshop.

  • Will adding more RAM to my Power Mac G5 make a difference?

I have a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) with 1 GB of RAM, which is how I ordered it. Sometimes when I am viewing large (large viewing size) video files with Quicktime, the video files get a little choppy from time to time, especially when I have many other applications open. Will adding more RAM fix this or is it not really necessary? Also, does Leopard improve this problem? I am currently using Tiger.

    Hey Tim
I'm definitely not an expert - but more Ram makes a huge difference. I'm not sure if more Ram will specifically solve your Quicktime issues or whether upgrading your graphic card is really the answer. Those more knowledgeable should jump in here. Buying Ram from 3rd parties, like OWC (making sure you do have the right compatible Ram), will improve your performance immediately. I noticed the difference when maximizing the RAm on my G4. It cannot hurt. 4GB of Ram for my G5 cost less than $200. I think Ram is the biggest bang for the buck.
Do you really need to get Leopard? The performance of Tiger on the G5 for me is solid. Seems like Tiger is optimized at this point for the G5 processor chips. Why muck around with all the potential problems you read about on these forums. Check out the Adobe forum and hear some of their nightmare stories. Who has this amount of time to waste on fixing what shouldn't need fixing in the first place. Just a thought - hope I'm not out of line for chiming in on this.
Since your model can take 8GB of Ram, indulge yourself and maybe buy another 4GB of matched Ram and if it doesn't solve your Quicktime issues, I'll bet it will make you happy with everything else.

  • PB 12" G4 supposed to have 512Mb RAM but only 384 ?

    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 12"
    Machine Model: PowerBook6,8
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.5 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 384 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.0f0
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
    Version: 1.0
Ok those are the specs of my machine
It was bought June 05 and came with 10.3.
I then installed 10.4 and have updated to 10.4.4.
In October I was editing a large DVD file and my mac became really slow. I thought it was bc my HD was too full (which it was). so then I bought an ext HD and transferred heaps of data over..
But it was still really slow, the same as before.
I am pretty sure it came with 512mb ram and is supposed to. I don't remember what it said when I first bought it but I'm pretty sure it would've been 512.
I have not tampered with or opened the RAM slot.
I bought the PB from a reputable apple reseller here in Sydney so I doubt they would've done anything dodgy. I called them and they confirmed it should've had 512. They also told me if there are major probs it will take up to 4 weeks to fix.
Since I can't live without my computer for 4 weeks (!!) I thought I could figure it out by myself.
    Any ideas?
    thanks.

    Hi Livia,
I had the same problem with my PowerBook. Suddenly 128MB of RAM disappeared and the computer became slow. I was sure I had 512MB of RAM.
You should check in the System Profiler under Diagnostics if there is an error.
In my case, System Profiler reported an error with the user-replaceable RAM. I installed another RAM (1gb stick) the computer only recognized half the RAM from the chip and System Profiler was still reporting an error.
Now I must to take the powerbook to the technical service because the problem is in the logic board, not with the RAM.

  • Mac Book Pro doesn't boot (twice; after updating) and slow performance before these incidents

    Hi,
Maybe someone can help me resolving a (re) boot issue with my Mac Book Pro. Last few weeks I experienced a tremendous drop in performance (start-up as well as handling and using applications).
Yesterday I downloaded and installed  an app to clean stuff from the mac, such as binaries that aren't used, cache files, etc. It resulted in substantial better performance. Than, I used the updater on this application to update. This morning, the Mac wouldn't boot. After several attempts I used the old DVD with Mac OS X to re-install and boot. That worked.
Following this approach, I received two messages (that HP apps weren't secured or something and therefor disabled). Than I updated the Mac OS X and later this evening it asked me if I wanted to install some (4) other updates as well (don't know what updates these were). So I updated but now I am back at square one: My Mac doesn't boot. I do get the grey starting screen, but now even the 'apple' logo is missing.
Anyone else experiencing these problems and have any clues on how to fix it? By the way, I also tried to alter permissions on all files on the main hard drives (to ensure that I do not always have to sign off on updates and or changes of applications). Would that have caused problems?

You seem to have a lot going on here, so it's hard to know what's wrong. You likely had some underlying problems before doing the Software Update.
Here's a link that might help with the grey screen problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    Which app did you download?
If you can get booted up, check in the System Profiler to see that all of your RAM is recognized--if not, you may need to reseat one or both sticks.
If you can boot from your install disc, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test to check for hardware problems. Freezing can be caused by a dying hard drive, which can also tend to corrupt software.
While booted from the install disc, navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot disk. You can do this 2 or 3 times even if it says no problems found.
While in Disk Utility, check to see that the SMART status of your hard drive is verified. If not, you will need to replace the drive.
It probably wouldn't hurt to reinstall the OS.
Do you have a good, up to date backup? If not, it would be a good idea to make one as soon as you can, just to be on the safe side.
Have you tried a Safe Boot?
