Adding a 2nd HDD

Hello All,
I recently acquired a mirror door G4 and want to add a HDD (I need more storage). Can someone steer me to an appropriate drive (make/model). (I'm sure I can install a 2nd HDD without destroying my machine -- the online instructions seem pretty much plug and play).
Machine Name: Power Mac G4
Machine Model: PowerMac3,6
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2
Serial Number: G8*
Thanx,
andy

A few things determine it, on an IDE cable with 3 connectors, the middle blue one is for Slave, the black end one is for Master, many, but not all will use Cable Select to automatically set Master & Slave via the cable connection, but I've had IDE/ATA drives here I had to set Master & Slave jumpers, or Single if no Slave.

  • 2nd HDD to replace optical drive - B560

I have seen a thread here (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/2nd-hard-drive-in-a-W510/m-p/346539#M12570) of success replacing the optical drive with a 2nd HDD bay in a y560. I am wrong thinking there is not much difference between a Y560 and a B560, at least concerning the basic chasis and components layout, and a similar HDD bay should work in a B560. Has anyone with a B560 added a 2nd HDD? Many thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, the B560 would work fine IMO. I have done it on my Y550. What you want to make sure is that your optical drive is not some kind of weird micro drive. Honestly, it's probably a standard sized DVD drive, to which any adapter would work. I picked up mine on eBay for about $20.
I'm not sure what else to say... It's really easy to do.

  • 2nd HDD not recognized in Win7 Disk Manager, Shows in Device Manager, BIOS, Win7 Repair CD

    Hello,
I am trying to add a newly purchased HDD to my laptop as the secondary HDD.  The primary is a 160 GB SSD.
Primary SSD: Intel 160 GB SSD model SSDSA2BW160G3H
Secondary HDD: WD 750 GB 7200 RPM SATA/300, Model WDBLHJ7500ANC-NRSN
Laptop: HP Pavilion dv7t-7000 Quad 17.3" laptop
Laptop Config: Intel i7-3720QM 2.6 GHz Quad Core, 8 GB RAM, nVidia GT650M, 160 GB SSD
    Laptop BIOS: F.24
    Laptop Date of Birth: 5/24/2012
    OS: Win 7 Prof x64
Shows up in BIOS (can run diagnostics OK).
Shows up in Win 7 Prof Device Manager.
Does NOT show up in Disk Manager.
Checked device drivers for Win7 Prof Device Manager HDD, have the latest.
Checked service manual, can't see anything that I missed.
Booted with Active@BootDisk (Win PE rescue disk), drive showed up as uninitialized.
Initialized drive, partitioned (one large), formatted NTFS.
Booted with Win 7 Repair Disk (Win PE), can see the drive in command prompt, able to write a text file to it OK.
Still won't show up in Win 7 Prof in Disk Manager.
Any ideas?  Maybe a firmware upgrade for the laptop?  Some kind of incompatibility with the HDD and SDD such as different dirve modes (don't believe that Win7 has issues with IDE versus AHCI devices)?
I had trouble adding a 2nd HDD to my dv7-6000 laptop; it finally just showed up months later. Is this common with HP laptops?
I am stumped and any help is appreciated.  I checked the Internets and didn't see anything other than HW issues. I need this to work for the new semester that started today.

    More testing:
WD Data Lifeguard (Western Digital's HDD diagnostics) also won't see the HDD after booting with Win 7 Prof off of the SSD.
Moved the HDD cable from the 2nd HDD to the primary header (SSD disconnected).  Was able to install another instance of Win7 on the 2nd HDD OK; this proves that the new WD HDD and the secondary cable are OK.  Moved the cable back to the 2nd header (still no SSD) and the computer booted off of the secondary HDD connected to the secondary header OK.
Added the SSD back to the primary header and booted into the instance of Win7 off of the SSD.  Disk Management can't see the 2nd HDD, WD Data Lifeguard can't see the 2nd HDD; however, Device Manager is able to see the 2nd HDD OK.
Ran Intel SSD toolbox on SSD; no issues.  Ran WD Align by Acronis on SSD (checks for advanced format alignment of 4K boundaries); it's already aligned to 4k boundaries.
Connected HDD to pri header, booted Win7 Ultimate on HDD.  Ran WD Data Lifeguard on HDD; it's fine.   Booted into WD Align by Acronis CD, ran WD align against HDD; it's already aligned to 4k boundaries.
Put HDD on pri header, SSD on secondary header and booted into Win7 Ultimate on HDD.  Able to see both drives in Dask Management.
Put SSD back onto primary header, HDD back onto 2nd header, booted into Win7 Prof on SSD.  Disk Management can't see the HDD again...
Updated laptop BIOS from F.24 to F.2D rev A (Install Shield Wizard confirms that it is for Win7 x64 as well as Win 8.1).  Didn't fix the issue...
Ran Intel Driver Update Utility.  I have the Intel RST (Rapid Store Technology) driver v 11.0.0.1032.  Did not state that I needed to upgrade this driver.  This is latest version on the HP website.
Everything works except having the SSD connected to the primary header, having the HDD connected to the secondary header, booting into Win7 Prof on the SSD and trying to see the HDD in Disk Management.  Unfortunately, this is the configuration that I need to work.
Any thoughts on what is causing this?  Hardware issue with HP Laptop?  Power supply issue?  Bad HDD controller?  Bad install of Win7 Prof on SSD (appears to run fine otherwise).

  • How do I install Yosemite on a 2nd HDD I have added and have the Mac Pro boot from the new HDD?

My MacPro's HD seems to be failing. None of the tests I run indicate that, but I get constant spinning balls and everything takes a long time. I bought a 2nd HDD and installed it in the 2nd bayou my Early 2009 Mac Pro. I formatted it and want to install Yosemite and have the Mac boot off the new drive. It is currently running OS X 10.9.5. When I go to update to Yosemite it begins to download. Will it give me the option of which drive to install on? Or will it just upgrade the original Mac's HD?

    A Samsung 850 EVO 128GB SSD $75 now and makes a huge improvement. But get the 250GB which is $99. 500GB $199
Wish you asked us first   Awesome prices and performance.
Output from Etrecheck is an easy "quick check" of what your system is carrying around and what baggage it has.
Move data to a 'data and media library" drive.
Use CCC to skip the user data folders except ~/Library and clone to SSD
And might want to save the installer .ESD package for use as clean installer and to be able to boot from.

  • Satellite P500-12D adding 2nd HDD

Toshiba UK say it is not possible to install a second drive into a P500-12D.
The reason seems to be that the "tin plate" drive carrier for the second drive is not sold.
I was also told that the second drive bay couldn't be used "on your model" but the sata connection is there and the brass threaded inserts in the case for the carrier screes are present.
The drive bay is deeper than the 1st bay (for the thicker >500gb drives and therefore the drive carrier for the 1st bay cannot be used - the whole centres are also different.
Any ideas for a work around ?
sorry for any spelling mistakes - my original post wouldn't be accepted "Your message contains profanity or inappropriate language.

" but no indication of where. It may be that the things that go in threaded inserts are banned
    Peter K

    >The reason seems to be that the "tin plate" drive carrier for the second drive is not sold.
The reason is that there are different P500 hardware configurations
The P500 and other Toshiba notebooks series are equipped with different motherboards.
Not all motherboards support 2 HDD controllers.
This can be a little bit confusing for someone who buy an notebook and see the second HDD bay but if you would remove the cover from the 2nd HDD bay, then you will see that there is no HDD connector.
This would mean that you will not be able to use second HDD.

  • Bought a DV7t with 7200 RPM Hybrid HDD; a) Can I add a 2nd SDD drive or b) 2nd HDD ?

    I bought a DV7T QE with a Single 750GB HD. Question:
    1) Can a SDD be added, given that HP doesn't give this as an option, yet it should be possible
    2) If a 2nd HDD is added (assuming same manufacturer as 750 GB HDD), HP originally offered this configuration and allowed Intel SMart Response mSSD option - Any instruction on how to add 2nd HDD and then turning on the mSSD Intel SRT ?
    Thanks
    V

    Hi,
    1. Yes, you can add SSD as the second harddrive on your machine,
    2. If adding SSD, you better swap it to be your FIRST harddrive and if that was the case then mSSD Intel SRT became useless, no need to have mSSD Intel SRT because I've got REAL SSD.

  • Add 2nd HDD for DV7-4190SD With right cable length

    Good day people,
I have a question about adding a second harddrive to my DV7-4190SD notebook.
I searched a long time now but it seems to be hard to find the 100% correct answer.
I want to ad a second hdd to my machine, And according to the service manual from my notebook I have to order replacement part 605415-001.
The description for this part is:
    Hard Drive Hardware Kit
(includes left and right bracket rails, connector cable, Mylar coverwith tab, 4 screws, and 4 rubber isolators)
I just want to know if this is the correct part? The cable wich comes with the 1st HDD is short, the cable that must meet the 2nd HDD must be a lot longer.
Does this part from HP (605415-001) comes with two cables? (For the 1st and 2nd HDD? because the bracket for the 1st HDD has the same part number....)
It is also welcome that somebody who had the same problem and has it solved now that he/she pin me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance for the reply's.

I dont know about the HP parts but I can refer you to another more reasonably priced place to purchase and investigate your situation. I have added a second drive to my DV7 already and bought my kit here.
NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
Their kits come as complete as HP ones for a fraction of price.

  • Is the 2nd HDD in used if there is no data on it?

I just installed a 2nd HDD on my macbook pro. I have not added any data on it yet. I just want to know if the 2nd HDD is spinning if I didnt add any data or even bother to access it?

excellent. That is good news. I dont want any access to it yet till my 1st hdd is full. I just want to to be a dead un-usable drive.
I just installed it in the laptop and just formate it. I can go to my computer and check out the storage space. It shows 2 storage space. 1 for the 1st hdd and the 2nd for the other hdd.

  • BSOD appears to occur everytime the system tries to access a 2nd HDD (IDE)

Pretty much as above, one day I left my machine ripping a CD into iTunes (stored on 2nd IDE drive) and when I returned the machine had hung with a blank screen.
I then tried everything to wake the machine up but nothing except a reboot worked.
Then when it started to reboot it would just BSOD on windows startup, sometimes during startup other times after I had entered my login details.
I have done some testing and seem to have narrowed it down to the 2nd HDD. If I don't access the 2nd HDD (for example by disabling it in the bios) machine seems to work OK, but as soon as I try and access the disk, even to save a file on it instant BSOD.
If anyone can offer some guidance it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having this same problem with my newly built system, but in my case it happens only when doing large, continuous reads or writes to the IDE hard drive. The other two SATA hard drives work perfectly. At first I thought it was some teething bugs in the bios or drivers, but I was worried about the PSU as well. I've only swapped out the mb, cpu, memory and graphics card, so I know that there's nothing wrong with the HDDs or the cables, but with the added load to the PSU... Seems odd though that it would manifest itself only when accessing the IDE hard drive.
I will try to make further tests with other PSUs, and I've ordered a IDE2SATA adapter and will try that as well.

    1) Many items greyed out in the menu bar, for well over 2 years, maybe more!
    2) I Can't drag more than one piece of content from your iTunes library to any device (iPhone, iPad)

I used to be able to drag over 1000 tunes, movies, etc. go have breakfast come back and it would all be on my device!!
Can't do it anymore, one song at a time, maybe an album at a time, or one movie, and that is it!!
If you do a 2nd item the other items stop loading and never continue!!
This is so BAD, I don't understand how they don't have this fixed yet!!
Please tell me I am not the only one!!
...and If I am tell me how to fix it!
    Very appreciated,

  • Installing Windows XP on 2nd HDD

I tried searching and reading prior post, but could not find an answer, so any one with knowledge, please help.
Question #1: I want to install Windows XP on a 2nd internal HDD, to keep it separate from the HDD that has OS X. Do I use BootCamp (BC), and during some point of the installation, BC will ask which drive I want to use for Windows XP? If not, how do I install Windows XP onto a separate HDD?
Question #2: Since my PC uses a different style of HDD than the Mac Pro, if I pull the HDD from my PC that has Windows XP set up on it and using an external HDD enclosure to run the drive, can I connect it (firewire) to my Mac Pro and simple copy the contents to the 2nd internal HDD? Will I then be able to boot from either OS at start-up?
    Bruce

Print out the PDF that comes with BootCamp Assistant.
The drive needs to be formatted as GUID first if you want to use only half or part of it. If you choose MRB, then the whole drive gets used. Though you could just format as two FAT partitions and go from there.
BootCamp fully supports installing on 2nd hdd.
Copy? as in using Norton Ghost or similar program. But Windows can't be booted from any form of external hdd, not normally or easily.

  • Can I add a 2nd HDD on my Satellite A300-02C?

    Hi all,
I'm wondering if it's possible to add a 2nd hard drive in my A300-02C?
There is a 2nd HDD slot, but no sata connector on the PCB (see picture link).
    http://www.notebookreview.com/picture.asp?f=36752
I'm wondering if it's possible to add the connector (by myself or by the toshiba customer service).
If someone knows if it's possible and where can i buy the sata connector... Please leave a comment :)
    Adrien.

I think there is nothing you can do about it.
Satellite A300 is delivered with several different hardware configurations and several different mainboards. I really don't believe you can add it additionally.
For exact info contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider and ask for help.
If someone has experience with this stuff then Toshiba service technicians.

  • Can I install a 2nd HDD in my Satellite P200-10C?

    Hi
I have a Satellite P200-10C which I want to upgrade with a 2nd HDD. I called a Toshiba representative who told me my model doesn't support an other HDD. But then again, why does it have a place in the back of the laptop for a 2nd one?
Could some one tell me if it can be used to accommodate a 2nd HDD.
    Thanks in advance
    Gerardo

    @Jayjay
I finally decided to open the compartment for the 2nd HDD of my Satellite P200-10C. I discovered there the modem (I think) and enough space to accommodate a HDD but alas! No connector for the HDD. I think that settled the matter. I can not have a 2nd HDD. Unless of course someone in the future find a way to attach a connector.
    Thanks for your answer, Jajay

  • 2nd HDD Bracket for SFF P300?

I recently purchased a Thinkstation P300 SFF machine that came configured with a 3.5" 1TB primary HDD.
I would now like to add a second 3.5" hard disk drive, but I need a bracket to install it into. That should be simple, right?
Unfortunately, after multiple calls to Lenovo sales and tech support...nobody can find a part number for this hard drive bracket. I've tried to order it twice - once they sent me a 2.5" HDD bracket that fits in my P300, but won't fit my 3.5" HDD. The second time, they sent me a 3.5" HDD bracket, but the bracket was for the tower version, not the SFF version of the P300.
According to the system specs and hardware manuals, the SFF P300 will accomodate TWO 3.5" HDD's.
It should not take this much trouble to add a second HDD to a "workstation" class machine.
Can anyone help?  Is there a part number for this thing? Is anyone there?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    1. Yes, my P300 came with a DVD/RW. I think it is standard height. The bracket holding the ODD is 1/2" taller than the bracket holding the primary HDD.
    2.  Yes...the front panel includes a card reader, plus microphone input, headphone output, and 2 USB 3.0 slots.
It appears to me that there is room in the case for the 2nd HDD - it looks like the bracket for drive #2 has room to be installed against drive #1 (the bracket should allow them to connect together without screws, per the hardware manual).
I can post photos of the inside and outside of the unit, if that would help.
The unit I purchased was from CDW...here's the URL for it on their site.
Oh...and I will need a "bracket kit", including SATA data and power cables. There are only two SATA power cables on the motherboard, and those are both already taken up, so I will need some sort of power cable splitter in order to power both HDD's.
I suspect that this is an issue on your end...I've contacted both Sales and Support, multiple times, and neither one has been able to find me the bracket kit that I need.
I'm getting ready to return the P300 to CDW, because if I can't install a 2nd HDD, it's not useful to me. I would prefer to keep it, but not in its present state.
    Thanks.

What is the part # for the 2nd HDD Adapter for an Ultrabay Slim, to be used in the DVD bayCan you also confirm it is a SATA connection, I have already been sent an IBM P/N 41U3148 which has the IDE connection and appears not to fit.

Actually, it is entirely accurate.  Here is another related thread with a lot of pictures that demonstrate the problem.  I have 3 Lenovo W520s and 3 useless Lenovo Ultramedia bay adapters.  I cannot tolerate the gap because it causes frequent drive dismounts when I pick up the laptop when it is running or even touching the side.  The newmodeus adapters I purchased to replace the defective Lenovo adapters have been rock solid!  I recommend visiting all the picture links on this thread.  It will clearly demonstrate the problem:

Shan, it isn't entirely correct because we have a lot of W510 and W520 users in my company this doesn't occur with. I am not discounting the problem. I only take exception to the statement that blankets ALL users and ALL hard drive adaptors.  Doing that is incorrect.
