Adding a 2nd ipod to pc

My son wants to add his ipod to my pc.How is this done and what happens with the music files.

Hi Barry,
I copied this from the iPod Support FAQ
Question: Can I update more than one iPod with my computer?
Answer: Yes. Each iPod communicates a unique device identification number to your computer, allowing you to take advantage of automatic music transfers to your iPod even if you share a computer with another iPod user. You can choose to automatically update your entire music collection on multiple iPod players or choose to update selected playlists, allowing you to transfer custom playlists to individual iPod players.

My daughter already has an iPod and now my son wants his own. Is the music I purchased shared amongst both iPod's or will the 2nd iPod require it's own library? Will iTunes automatically handle plugging in the 2nd iPod without destroying the previous library?
    Thanks.

You have several options to manage the iPods on one PC. These links should help:

  • 2nd iPod in a row saying "Disk cannot be read from or written to." Help!

    My setup is as following:
MacBook Pro 2.16 Ghz Intel Core Duo
    Mac OS X 10.5.2
Lacie 250GB External Hard Drive attached via Firewire
    iPod Classic 160GB Black
iTunes 7.6.2 - Library has about 16,000 songs
Using the above setup, my 5th Generation iPod, my iPhone, and my iPod Nano all work just fine. My newly purchased iPod Classic however, refuses to work. Here is the story so far...
I have all of my music on my external hard drive. On the external, there is a folder entitled "iTunes." Inside of that, there are 2 folders. One entitled "Album Artwork" and on entitled "iTunes Music." The music folder contains all of the actual AAC and Mp3 files that makeup my iTunes Library. The actual library data itself, the files entitled "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Library.xml" are on my computer HD, in User>Music>iTunes. Now, I dont know why the library file is on the computer when all the music is on the external, but maybe thats just the way that works.
Anyway, I plugged in the new iPod Classic, it started to sync, and about 15 minutes in, I got a pop up box that said "iPod Sync failed. Disk cannot be read from or written to." So I did a few things to try to make it work. I reinstalled iTunes, I restored the iPod a few times. I set it to only sync music and not TV shows or Movies or Podcasts or Photos. I tried to sync it again. Nothing worked. So, thinking I had a bad iPod, I brought it to the store and swapped it out for a new one. Not a "new" one, but one from the back, so it was refurbished. I tried that. It still didn't work. So I called Apple tech support.
Tech support had me set my iPod for Manual use, and then alphabetically import songs by artists. In other words, bring over all the "A" artists, followed by the "B" artists and so on...So I did that, I got to importing a few songs by Cyndi Lauper, and it got to one song, called "Shine" and the error message came up. So I figured, there it was, the corrupted file. So I deleted it from my computer, and proceeded to go on importing manually, just in case. Well I continued for a while, and at the end of the day, there were about 100 songs that would not copy over. These were songs that worked just fine when you played them through iTunes, and worked just fine on all my other iPods.
So I manually transferred over all the songs that worked, which was about a 100 less than my full library. Along the way, instead of deleting the corrupted songs, I unchecked them. After I did the full manual transfer, I set up the iPod to an automatic sync, only syncing over songs that are checked, thinking the unchecked ones, the corrupted ones, would not even try to be transferred over and it work fine.
I was wrong. With the sync, this time it stopped on a song that was not corrupted the first time around. Not knowing what to do, I ejected my iPod, and it wouldn't eject. It said "iPod appears to be corrupt, please click restore." So I did that, thinking this would finally fix it, since the computer realized the iPod was messed up. I was wrong again. It didn't do anything, it just made it so I could eject my iPod.
So I'm now on my 2nd iPod classic. I've done what Tech Support has told me to do. Now I need help. Badly.

I had similar problems, it was a nightmare and on a 3 month ipod too!. I use a Powerbook G4 at home and a G5 at work - both were returning the same problems. so I sent it off to apple, they quickly sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with and it didn't need to be repaired. I tried it again and the same problems occurred "disc cannot be written to or read from." I could copy 20 songs onto it at the very most. A couple of guys at my work suggested updating it on a PC, then adding tunes via my mac as normal - guess what!? it works a treat!?. How ridiculous is that!? an Apple product works best on a PC. these generations of ipods are obviously designed to work best on Intel based Macs. What is wrong Apple? are you abandoning the G-generation!? still, atleast my ipod works for now - it will prove a problem when I have to update the iPod's software since I don't own a PC or an intel-based Mac.

  • I want to buy a 2nd iPad for my wife. we both have kindles and I have the kindle app for my iPad.  are there any issues or concerns in adding a 2nd iPad to the iTunes account

I want to buy a 2nd iPad for my wife.  we both have kindles and i have the kindle app for my iPad. are there any issues or concerns in adding a 2nd iPad with kindle app?

You can sync as many iDevices as you own to a single iTunes library if you want to do so. If you manage the content manually, you can pick and choose the apps, music, videos and so on that you want on each device. One iTunes account means using the same Apple ID to purchase and update all of your apps. You can share apps on both devices because once you buy an app, you can download it to all of your iDevices - as many times as you want - using the same Apple ID and iTunes account. If you decide to do this, you have to sync to the same computer each time in order to keep all of your shared apps in the one iTunes library.
The Kindle App content is not synced to the iTunes library. It is controlled by your Kindle account. I believe that you can go into your Kindle account and transfer your purchase to your other devices - iPad, computer, etc. You can both have the Kindle app on your iPads and share the content as far as I know, so I see no conflict there. However, while I do have the Kindle app and an account, I do not use it very often.
If you want to share the one iTunes account, there should be no problems with a second iPad. I sync my iPad, my iPod Touch and my wife's iPod Touch to my MacBook using the same iTunes library and we have different content on all three devices. My daughter uses my iTunes account for her iPod Touch and syncs to her own MacBook and her own iTunes library.
Four devices using one iTunes account syncing to two different iTunes libraries.

  • Installing 2nd ipod on one computer

Need HELP - I have an ipod 2nd gen installed on an Itunes account, want to add a 4th gen to the same itunes account, use the same music, apps, etc. What do I do first? Do I just plug it in and let Itunes take over? Will it add all that I have checked to be added to the ipod, even though each ipod has its own identity?
    Thanks.

If you want everything, including the data in the apps just restore the new iPod from the backup of the old iPod. You will probably be prompted for this option when you connect the new iPod to the computer. I was offered that option when I connected my new 4G iPod, specifically it asked me if I want to restore the iPod using the backup of my iPad. I said yes and things worked fine. As expected, iPad only stuff did not go to my iPod.

  • Can/how do i use a 2nd ipod with same itunes account? please help

I dont use itunes/ipod. My husband is in Afghanistan and he would like me to buy him a 2nd ipod perhaps a nano so i can download his music and send that 2nd one to him.
I dont know much of this but when i connect the new ipod nano to his itunes, wont it erase all his itunes? i somehow remember something about the itunes synchs to what is on the ipod (which would be nothing on this new one).
any direction will help as i only have a small window to do/send this to him within the next days.

There are a bunch of ways to pick what you want to sync to his nano. When you plug in the nano, if you make sure the device on the left panel in iTunes, on the main panel you'll see a bunch of tabs in which you can select what is synced. Click on the "Music" tab and you'll see that you can pick playlists, artists, or genres.
The first option, playlists, is a very common technique. You create a playlist in iTunes ("File" - "New playlist") and then drag-and-drop music that you want to put on the nano into that playlist (and make sure you select this new playlist in that "Music" tab described in the previous paragraph).

  • How do I place a 2nd iPod on my iTunes account so that....

...neither iPod loses its particular apps, games, music, etc when it synchs? Yes, I know this is supposed to be simple, simple, simple. But it wasn't, wasn't, wasn't EVER with the 2nd iPod's predecessor.
Brief history: I have an iPod. Yay. All very fine and well. Synched it with my computer and it worked and we lived happily ever after -- until my 10-year-old an iPod last Christmas and I tried to create an account for it on the same computer, using Apple's directions. Hah! Upshot: The two iPods then lived happily never after together and much cursing rained from my mouth when "Method Three" resulted in the erasure of my own iPod's library at iTunes.
I managed to restore that using my own iPod -- though my library was renamed "Previous iTunes Libraries" and I never have managed to successfully rename it. It remains "Previous iTunes Libraries."
Meanwhile, that awful burp was enough to get the second iPod working and thereafter we never could get the thing to synch without destroying my own iPod's library -- even though it was recognized as a second iPod and there was a second account and everything. Consequently, we stopped synching the stupid thing which was OK since the 10-year-old could charge it without connecting to the computer and he was using it mostly for games and a few songs which we downloaded wirelessly.
Then his iPod screen cracked -- apparently, it's not the best idea to let them slide between sofa cushions and then sit on them. Luckily, its one-year protection plan was still active and we just got a brand-new replacement. Stupidly, I tried to synch the thing again last night in an attempt to download the games and history that he had so it could go on the new iPod. Sigh. You know: Big mistake. My own iPod's library is now full of swiss-cheese holes and I've lost things that I'd taken off my iPod so I guess they can't be replaced. I decided to forget trying to save his iPod's history and we're starting over, from scratch, with the new iPod. He'll have to get apps, etc, and start over again with his games, etc. And I pray to God that we can set up the iTunes account so it actually works this time. Please! Help! Me! Do! This!
I've been told that Method Two (second iPod is just a different playlist) is best but what about apps? If both iPods have, say, Angry Birds, does Method Two save two separate sets of Angry Birds, each with its own history? I figure my lost songs/apps are gone forever as is everything that was on his iPod even though it was purchased with my user ID and all that. I figure this is a bad, bad dream but I am hoping you will help me wake up from it into a nice, shiny, smoothly working iPod world.
Thanks for your time and I appreciate all help! The new iPod is not going to be used at all until I'm somewhat confident/hopeful that I can pull off this allegedly simple and easy operation.

    9850,
you can do it by creating sub-folders within the folder that is selected to be synced.
e.g.  Folder "Photo" has been selected to be synced to your iPad.
Create two sub-folders e.g. "Family" and "Vacation" within "Photo" folder and put photos in both sub-folders instead of "Photo" folder.
Now sync your photos and in photo's tab, after you have selected "Photo" folder to be synced, make sure you select all Folders as example below:
Once completed you will find both folders "Family" and "Vacations" are in your iPad's album including Camera Roll.  e.g. below:

    Why does iTunes SUCK??
    1) Many items greyed out in the menu bar, for well over 2 years, maybe more!
    2) I Can't drag more than one piece of content from your iTunes library to any device (iPhone, iPad)
If you do it gets stuck for HOURS and HOURS in "Preparing To Update" and the little activity circle never completes, ever!!
I used to be able to drag over 1000 tunes, movies, etc. go have breakfast come back and it would all be on my device!!
Can't do it anymore, one song at a time, maybe an album at a time, or one movie, and that is it!!
If you do a 2nd item the other items stop loading and never continue!!
This is so BAD, I don't understand how they don't have this fixed yet!!
Please tell me I am not the only one!!
...and If I am tell me how to fix it!
    Very appreciated,

  • How do I set up a 2nd Ipod Classic on my pc?

I just purchased my 2nd Ipod and would like to set it up on my pc. How do I set it up so that i can still use my original Ipod on the same pc?

Just sync it to iTunes. It will recognize each iPod by it's serial number. You can sync as many iPods and iPhones as you wish!

2 ipod touches sharing home pc. The 2nd ipod is not being recognised by itunes. Do you need to set up another itunes account?

    Hi,
What is the iCloud status of these tracks?
You can add icloud status column to song view - go to menu > view> view options and tick box. This will tell you what has been Matched, Uploaded, Purchased, Inelligible, Duplicate or Waiting.

  • Added a 2nd internal SCSI drive into my 7500/100 does not show up.

    Hi.
I added a 2nd internal SCSI drive into my 7500/100. It does not show up on the desk top. I rebuild the desktop reset the cuda and ran SCSIProbe. The computer starts up on the newly added drive. No sign from the original drive. Please help.

there are jumpers on the drives that need to be properly set. Both drives are set with the terminating resistor on, one needs to be off. Carefully note nthe placement of the existing jumpers then remove the jumper from the drive in the middle connector.

  • "Recently added" playlist on iPod Touch problem

I don't know what happened but suddenly my recently added playlist on iPod Touch stopped sorting my songs as they were added (by date) they are all random now. It's pretty annoying since sometimes i just want to listen the the previously imported songs and it's impossible to find them.
Now, as for the recently added playlist on my iTunes, they appear sorted the way i like them.
Does anyone know how can I tell my iPod to sort my songs this way?
    Thanks

This is a known bug with the 3.1.x OS. As a workaround, either go into the playlist definition and un-check "Live Updating", or you can add some criteria that intentionally breaks Live Updating (e.g. add the criteria "Playlist Is Music", where "Music" is the general iTunes folder for music items).

can i add a 2nd ipod to my apple acount

Yes. As long as the second iDevice has a unique name iTunes will deal with it separately.

  • 2nd ipod question

hi. i recently purchased a 2nd ipod from a friend which is loaded with films and music. is their anyway to combine the library on this new ipod with my old itunes which i have on my computer?? i only want the films from this new ipod but want to put my music onto it.
    many thanks

You do not have legal right to the content from your friend's iPod unless you already owned the content, so we cannot help you with this issue. If you want that content, purchase the films yourself from the iTunes Store
