Adding a FileVault HDD

My PowerMac G5's motherboard died, so I just received its replacement, a Mac Pro quad. I installed the PowerMac's hard disk into the new machine, hoping to copy the files and use it as a 2nd HDD. But, I had FileVault turned on for the PowerMac, so the new Mac Pro seems to have trouble reading the drive. Is there any way to copy the files, and then erase the old drive? The old drive also has the old operating system (10.5.8) on it, but I don't think that's causing the problem.
Thanks in advance.

I turned on FileVault, and I can access the old hard drive, but it doesn't list any files under the encrypted home directory. Also, that disk sometimes does not mount when I boot the machine, and if it does, after a few minutes, it unmounts and I'll get an error message saying it wasn't properly ejected. It's a Raptor (enterprise class) that's maybe 3 or 4 years old, so I'm pretty sure it's still in good condition.

  • Adding a USB HDD to a VM via OVM - /dev/mapper Error

    Hey all,
we're trying to hook up a USB HDD to a virtualized database server for a one time backup.
So after connecting it to the OVS, i formatted it to ext3, mounted it and voila. When i edit the database VM via OVM i can add a Physical Disk.
I am getting an error though:
Status: org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcException: exceptions.RuntimeError:disk:setup_error:Command: ['xm', 'block-attach', '0004fb000006000056a65a591c902757', 'phy:/dev/mapper/35000000000000001', 'xvdd', 'w'] failed (1): stderr: Error: Device 51760 (vbd) could not be connected. /dev/mapper/35000000000000001 does not exist.stdout: Usage: xm block-attach [BackDomain]
...and he is right. There is no /dev/mapper/35000000000000001
But where does it get that information from?!
    Any ideas?

OVM will only make use of volumes that are accessible through /dev/mapper. USB volumes are, as you already know, not available in /dev/mapper and thus can't be mapped to virtiual machines as volumes.
This is a limitation, but I think Oracle decided for this, because a USB drive really doesn't make a good choice for a virtual drive, as is introduces a lot of latency and other potential I/O issues, you don't want to have in a virtualized environment.
It would be better to map the backup drive in thge guest itself using other protocols like NFS.
    Cheers,

A few things determine it, on an IDE cable with 3 connectors, the middle blue one is for Slave, the black end one is for Master, many, but not all will use Cable Select to automatically set Master & Slave via the cable connection, but I've had IDE/ATA drives here I had to set Master & Slave jumpers, or Single if no Slave.

  • Satellite P870 - Adding SSD to HDD is possible? Is it compatible?

    Hi everyone,
I would like to know if you could add a 256 GB SSD to the default HDD (1 TB) or not. Will this upgrade be compatible with the default system? Is this system gonna work fine or it may cause some technical problems in time?
Please let me know whatever you think about this. Even if there is a very little risk in this, I might change my mind.
I look forward to knowing your comments soon.
    Kind regards
    PNouma

    Hi
The SSD drive should be compatible you should use an SATA SSD drive since the notebook supports an SATA controller
In some cases an the SSD drive firmware update might be required but this info should be provided by SSD drive manufacturer.

  • When will adding an exteranl HDD be available?

I have a Motoorola 7216 DVR. I know that at the present time, addng an external HDD for increased recording time is not possible. My question is, when will it be possible to do this? Will we have to exchange our DVR's for a new one or will the ones we have now be upgradable?

    Elandow wrote:
Okay after reading on THEIR website that you can upgrade the 7216 DVR with certain models of Western Digital Hard drives I am here to tell you that it's NOT possible at this time. I checked and we have the old firmware 1.8 on this box. And it doesn't sound like they will be getting the 1.9 firmware anytime soon because they can charge users $40.00 to get the newer box 7232 that does work (supposedly). Spent a lot of time and money finding this out, so regardless of the conflicting messages on the board and their FAQ's  ( http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSTV/Other+Hardware/eSATA/129841.htm ) it doesn't work. Nor do I believe they will change it, they are NOT concerned about customer service and/or satisfaction! It's too bad, if they were competitive, I imagine they could make more money.
    Western Digital – WDBABT0010HBK-NESN – 1TB
    Your statements/assumptions are incorrect.
    1) You will not be able to use an external hard drive on a 7216 until you get the 1.9 level. When you do get it, you will be able to use the drive.
    2) You will not be able to use an external hard drive on a 7232 until you get the 1.9 level. When you do get it, you will be able to use the drive.
    3) Right in the link you provided in your post it says:
"Is eSATA external storage available in my area?
Verizon is currently deploying eSATA nationally and expects the process to continue throughout the summer.
You can determine if eSATA is enabled where you live by checking the On Screen Channel Guide (System Information under Menu/Customer Support). If you have IMG 1.9 or higher, you can install a recommended eSATA device."
I don't see how Verizon could say it any clearer. Maybe you should try to read more carefully.
The $40 fee has absolutely nothing to do with using an external drive.

  • Steps involved in adding USB external HDD to a TC

Please forgive me if this question is somewhere in the forum, I haven’t been able to find it. At least I haven’t been able to find the actual steps involved (but I’m sure that they are probably right in front of me).
Here is my problem. I have a 1Tb Time Capsule, an iMAC, a MacBook, a MacBook Pro. I am running out of some space on my TC and have had to exclude a few directories in order to get it to successfully backup. I would like to back up all of my directories if possible.
After reading the post by Pondini , I http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2296894 I see that I can add external USB drives to my time capsule (http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/TCQ4.html). If I want to add, lets say 2 usb drives and then backup each computer to its own drive. Is it simple a matter of getting a powered usb hub, and then on each individual computer configure its individual time machine backup (system preferences -> Time Machine -> Select Disk? Or do I control all of this from my ‘master’ computer, which is the iMAC? If this is the case, then what would be the steps involved.
    Does this question make sense?

    JM43 wrote:

    Yup.
Depending on the sizes, you might want to get a single large drive and back up 2 of the Macs to it. You could partition it so each one has it's own space, or let them share the whole drive.
Just be sure to format it/them +*Mac OS Extended+* with the GUID Partition Map scheme.
Or do I control all of this from my ‘master’ computer, which is the iMAC?
No, it isn't a "master." You may use it that way, but only a Mac running OSX Server is considered as a "master." All your Macs are equal.
One suggestion, though; I'd recommend backing the iMac up to a directly-connected USB (or, better, FireWire) external HD. That's much faster and more reliable, and will reduce the amount of traffic on your network.

  • Adding a second internal HDD on a Satellite A350-20s

    I have a Satellite A350-20s.
It is described in its documentation as having the option to add a second internal 2"5 hdd, and a indeed there is a place reserved for it..
The problem is that when I remove the cover to insert the hdd there is no connector.
So, how to do it ?

    Hi buddy,
Well, I have even checked the manual of my Satellite A350 and there you can see that the manual shows second HDD slot. But as Paolo30 wrote installing such a HDD is depending on the HDD controller You can only install such a HDD if you have a second HDD connector.
In my opinion all its ok because the manual doesnt mention that adding a second HDD is possible on every notebook. ;)
By the way: If you need more disk space you can use an external HDD, for example 2.5 one. Such HDDs dont need an additional power supply, you need only an USB cable to connect it. ;)

  • Adding SATA hdd for games..7200 OR 10000??

I'm going to be adding a SATA HDD for gaming and choosing between WD Raptor 36GB 10000@$120 or Seagate 80GB 7200@$70. Size isn't as important as performance, which is best bang for the buck??
    Thanks in advance

...best bang for the buck can be interpreted different ways...this is how I look at it...the Raptor is over $3 per GB, the other is ~ $1 per GB...
...just get the Raptor...that's what you want...

  • From Tiger To SnowLeo With a FileVault Issue (Migration)

    Hey!
So, my old MacBook Pro's Logic Board/ Video Card ?? was melting down little by little. During that time (and for awhile before) I had been making bootable backups (CCC clones). I had made about 4 clones on 4 different drives - kinda ridiculous but... Due to some space issues with my original 120GB that came with the 15", I had started to save my iPhotos' database separately to free up more space HD (this will come in later).
While trying to build an all-in-one, all up-to-date clone I had suffered a freeze/ improper shutdown on multiple drives (LogicBoard freezing/ Video card over heating?). Why across multiple drives? Well, after I suffered a bad shutdown with iTunes and thought my library would be messed up... I kept mounting bootable clones to copy it's iTunes Library so I could save the most current iTunes Library I had along with most 'current work' bootable clone. I should have known better to keep mounting an encrypted sparseimage when the conditions where high that it would freeze up again and not log out properly. But maybe I am luck with FileVault...(read on).
Anyways, new MacBP - I connected a boot clone during the installation to migrate files over. Did it, then couldn't log into my account. There is no mistake with the FileVault password or the Master Password for that matter. What I then did is I a fresh install of Snow Leopard and just have been using a blank (non of my previous files/ settings etc.) to access my different boot clones and do various disk checks/ utilities with Data Rescue 3/ TechTools Pro 5 and DiskWarrior. I can't get any of my bootable backups to boot off of - even though I have performed a bunch of things like verify disk, volume rebuild etc. I thought I was effectively locked out but I then added the FileVault keychain master password certificate and using an admin account on this new Snow Leo allowed it to be trusted for this machine. So, now I can safely open my encrypted sparseimage - and I have verified a bunch of the files are there and I can read them, can even choose Snow Leopard's iTunes to use my old iTunes Library and play all current stuff. This is great because this is the latest bootable clone that I have and I can open up the sparseimage no problem.
Ok, so finally my question... in this situation, what should I do to create a new Snow Leopard install and migrate my old account over to Snow Leopard. I don't want to run into permission issues etc. Oh, with regards to permissions... I had copied over my iPhoto database to an unencrypted backup drive while I was logged into FileVault. So, my iPhoto database isn't encrypted but what about it's permissions?
Should I just do what I did last time (migration assistant at installation) but under a new admin account in the new Snow Leopard move over the FileVault certificate that allowed me to use master password to open the FileVault? I hear the best way to move over FileVault accounts is to switch off FileVault and do the upgrade... but that's is the thing... I can't boot into these clones and switch it off. I can see the file system when logged into Snow Leopard.... and I do repair permissions but I can't seem to boot from it. If booted in I would probably run into the not enough space issue. To solve the space issue of un-FileVaulting, you make a new sparseimage, move over your contents etc. I hear - but you can't do that in Snow Leopard because it uses sparsebundles right? I can't seem to boot from Tiger install CD on this new Mac either.
Sorry, long winded but trying to give the most information. I feel like I am so close... I have access to all these files I want to move over.. how can I move them over with out missing invisible files and creating permission hiccups? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
And I think I am done with FileVault.... too many close calls....

Yes.   I've found that works best.  Especially if the drive is external, since external connections are typically slower, and Spotlight loves to eat up space going back and forth.   Time Machine will eat up as much space as it can, and typically needs drives at least twice the size of the original hard drive that is being backed up, if being backed up in full.   So unfortunately there is a lot of empty space that is needed for smooth operation.

  • Need Help w/ New Panther 10.3.5 Installation on B&W G3 w/ 80GB HDD...

I've checked other discussion topics for clues, but being unsuccessful I'm now clueless. Here's what I am experiencing...
    - G3 B&W tower/desktop... I added an 80GB HDD as a slave that is recognized by OS9.2 and OSX installation CDs. I successfully erased the 80GB HDD with all zeros, partitioned and initialized using both 9.2 and OSX drive setup utilities.
    - Panther installation using legal full retail version (not upgrade)launched from either 9.2 via CD-ROM drive or "C" boot from CD. It goes through through BSD and Base Part1. However, when it gets 98% completed of the base Part2 it tells me that it's encountered problems and asks me to reinstall via "restart". I did this 5-6 times over 8 hours.
    - Original 6GB drive still bootable.
    - Needless to say, I'm stumped. I performed a HDD verify using the disk utility, which indicated there were no problems.
My Questions... can this be done? Should I get help with this? Should I fold and get one of those mini-Macs?
I'm technically savvy and a bit frustrated with all of this. Can anyone help me?

I can think of some possibilities to explore. First, is the firmware update. Second, is RAM. If you have bad or marginal RAM it will be a problem for OS X. Remove your third-party RAM before installing OS X. Third, is the CPU upgrade. Try replacing it with the original processor. Fourth, try zapping PRAM.

  • Imovie and a new HDD

I have just added a new HDD to give my macbook more capacity. The istore did the installation for me. All looks fine until i tried to open imovie '08. It wont open because it comes up with a notification "imovie requires quicktime 7.6.0 or later".
I try to update my quicktime but it comes up with a notification "This software requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 or newer."
    I currently have 10.5.8.
Before i put the new HDD in i was using imovie with no issue at all.
    What has happened?
Please help me? I have a deadline of Monday to finish an imovie project.
    Why is it never easy?!!
    Thank you

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use iMovie. There's a iMovie Support Community where everybody uses iMovie. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie

  • 2nd HDD to replace optical drive - B560

I have seen a thread here (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/2nd-hard-drive-in-a-W510/m-p/346539#M12570) of success replacing the optical drive with a 2nd HDD bay in a y560. I am wrong thinking there is not much difference between a Y560 and a B560, at least concerning the basic chasis and components layout, and a similar HDD bay should work in a B560. Has anyone with a B560 added a 2nd HDD? Many thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, the B560 would work fine IMO. I have done it on my Y550. What you want to make sure is that your optical drive is not some kind of weird micro drive. Honestly, it's probably a standard sized DVD drive, to which any adapter would work. I picked up mine on eBay for about $20.
I'm not sure what else to say... It's really easy to do.

  • RAM & HDD Upgrading

Hi, I'm fairly tech obsessed and am fairly proficient with computers in general, but I've only had real experience playing around with PCs in general. I'm seriously considering purchasing a Mac-Book and was just wondering how easy it was to manually upgrade the ram & hard drive in the Mac-Book and whether it would void my prospective Apple Care warranty..
    Thanks for your help.
    John

I have a couple of questions regarding upgrading the HDD.
    1) What are the pro's & con's of going with an external HDD as opposed to upgrading the internal HDD
    2) If adding an external HDD is better, will the software CD that comes with the MacBook load onto the external drive? Is it even necessary to load Tiger onto an external drive? I have had many PC laptops before, however, never required an external drive so I am oblivious to how they work.
    3) If upgrading the internal HDD is better, does the Tiger software CD that comes with the MacBook load onto the new drive or would I have to purchase Tiger?
    4) If upgrading the internal HDD, what is the best way to transfer all my files? Copy to disc?
    I appreciate all your help

  • Have a still folder with a question mark and OS on external HDD isn't loading onto the Mac Pro

Good Morning....... I'm having an issue with this Mac Pro I've recently purchased that came with an 500GB HDD and I added an 2TB HDD also, but it never had an OS on it and when you power on the Mac Pro, you'll get a still folder with a question mark on it. I am very determined to get this situation corrected!!! I had got a copy of Snow Leopard on a blank DVD from a friend of mine but nothing had changed or occurred when I put it in the optical drive & I even saved Maverick installation on an external HDD; it read the drive when I held down the option key during the startup chime, I choose the external because that’s the only volume it shown on the screen; nothing else!!! No sign of the copied disk, the two HDDs that's in the Mac Pro, just the external HDD with the OS on it; I choose the external with Maverick on it but it still doesn't read and then a still folder with the question mark appears..... Can someone please help & save me PLEASE?????????

Buy a retail copy of Snow Leopard, then we can "chat" and get you with a system installed.
