Adding a firewire card in warranty

I want to add a firewire card to a pci slot. But if I do does it void my warranty?

Thank you for your reply. Could I ask you a question. The specs list a pci slot along with a pci express x 16 and pci express x 1.  I know the slot I want will be next to the blanking plate, but how do I know which to slot it into and could you desribe how to tell the difference and which one to use. many thanks in advance.

  • Early 2009 Mac Pro:  Adding a Firewire 400 card

I want to add a firewire 400 PCIe card to my Mac Pro as a last ditch effort to get my Presonus Firepods working properly. Presonus recommends the firewire card have a TI chipset. See my thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2770203&tstart=0
    Two questions:
    1. Any card recommendations known to work with large quantity audio throughput?
    2. Most every card I've reviewed has a card-mounted molex power connector; will I need to supply auxiliary power to this connector to provide enough power for the Firepods?
2a. If I do need to provide auxiliary power to the card. Where do I pick it up from? Is there a connector/cable somewhere inside the Mac Pro?
    TIA

I'd take a look at the Sonnet range of cards. I use them for video, which I guess has similar throughput and lack-of-latency requirements to multi-channel audio.
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/allegrofw400pcie.html
I believe you only need the aux.power feed to such cards *if your FW devices take power down the FW cable*. If your FW devices are separately powered from the AC mains, I suspect you won't need the aux.power feed to the card.
If you find you do need an aux.power feed, I guess you can find an adapter/extender from the unused second optical disk drive power connector?

  • To capture the Mini-DV file through the 1394 firewire card from t

    hii there!
first let mi make you understand what we people are doing ....
We people want to capture the Mini-DV file directly through the 1394 firewire card from the sony camcorder in to the MPEG2
format. Thent on the fly(i.e.during capturing into MPEG2) we also want to capture the metadata i.e (time, date etc. of the
original shooting event) into some text file. Our MPEG2 format requirements are: 8mbps viedeo,freq-48KHz,16 bit sterio,384
audio kbps, Deinterlace... we are using JavaMediaFramework-2.1.1e(Java Media Studio tool)..so we want to explore that tool
much more coz rightnow it's not supporting MPEG2(only supporting MPEG1) and also not supporting 1394 cpture card ...we want
the codec for converting DV-AVI to MPEG2 with date and time exctrated and much more explored details about JMf2.1.1 JavaMedia
    Studio to get more familiar.....
for the above mentioned problem I am trying to add the mpeg2 codec inthe plugin of the jmf studio..and i have followed the
    steps ..
    Download the Codec from IBM
    Extracted jmf.jar
    Extracted codec.zip
Added files from codec folder to jmf folder
Made a jar out of it and name it jmf.jar
Replaced that with current jmf.jar (kept a backup)
Opened JMFRegistry and in "Plugins","Codec" and now unable to add " "
this becoz i am not knowing the exact way of recopiling that newly created jar file and because of that that mpeg-2 codedc is
not get added .....so i am looking forward for any help for the above mentioned problem!
I would be gratefull on getting ur help coz it's such challenging and techy concept to explore...

  • PCMCIA firewire card for G4 laptop (follow-up to excessive timecode breaks)

1.) It was recommended that I get a new firewire bus to resolve excessive timecode breaks when importing from a Canon camcorder to an external hard drive. I've been reading through posts on this topic...and saw getting a new firewire port mentioned a few times... How come when I called Apple to check on the cost of a new firewire card for my laptop Powerbook G4, I was told that nothing could be added without replacing the entire logic board? Am I missing something? I didn't say "PCMCIA firewire drive" - is that something special? Any idea of the cost to purchase and install?
2.) Apple recommended just capturing to my internal hard drive, and transfering the projects. Apart from this being cumbersome... I need a little verification: if I transfer PROJECT X to my external hard drive, then do I also need to transfer my Audio Render, Autosave,Capture Scratch, Render, Thumbnail, and Waveform folders? [I realize this is basic, but I'm wary of losing the information the project needs and getting it all messed up]

pcmcia is an card slot. If you have a 12" PB you may not have one.
If you have a pcmcia slot, buy the card. Slide the card into your computer and start up. Put the camcorder on the card and your fw drive on the port built-in to your computer. Even if this does not solve the timecode issues, it will save you other headaches in the future.
Question. Does capturing to your internal drive solve the timecode issues you are having?
I disagree with the advice of capturing to your internal drive and transfering the project after the fact. There are a bunch of reasons why, and all of them are qualified, so I hesitate to go further until I know whether or not capturing to the internal drive is making your timecode headaches go away.
I suspect capturing to the internal drive will not help the timecode issues which will make the whole point moot. But hopefully I'm wrong :>

When you talk to representatives from Apple, you have to be conscious that if they are not specialists in the area you are focused on their advice may be based on general recommendations from an IT or home user perspective. There is a difference between talking to a sales person on the floor of the Apple Store and someone from the Genius Bar. And the person at the Genius Bar may have a tremendous background in network installations, but never have opened FCP. Or you might get lucky and get a FCP savvy genius, who would be a bit weak when talking about some other area.
This is not a knock, just a reality. It is difficult to be deeply conversant with even one area. It is not realistic for the generalists you usually deal with to know the best answers to very specific questions.
I'm working toward becoming a certified trainer with FCP and it is not easy or cheap to become an expert at this one application, never mind all the possible applications and hardware combinations for wildly different needs and budgets.

  • VIA VT6306 Firewire card

I've just installed a PCI USB2.0/Firewire card (specified on the box as being Mac OS X compatible) into my G4 dual 1GHz MDD . It runs the VIA VT6306 chip. I installed the drivers and the USB ports work perfectly, but the FW ones don't. Apparently they're supposed to run using the native Apple FW drivers, and indeed System Profiler shows the PCI card as being installed with 3 USB buses and one FW400 bus. But none of my peripherals (DV camera, iPod, scanner, hard drive or audio interface) will work using these ports. They are currently all hooked up via a hub to one of the on-board FW ports, as the other one has failed, hence the purchase of the new PCI card.
I've searched the web for information, but apart from someone else with the same problem, there's no fix given. Can anyone help?
    Regards,

HI, jumie. What you propose may work fine. Go ahead and clone your internal drive to an external drive, then give your plan a try. In the worst case, the computer will simply ignore the external drive and boot to the internal drive instead. No harm will be done.
Or could I just boot the computer with an external HD using the TiBook's own FireWire port and then run the audio through the PCMCIA-slot via FireWire?
This is a pretty safe bet. It's certainly possible to boot a Tibook to an external FW drive connected through the built-in FW port, unless you're unlucky enough to have bought a non-bootable external drive enclosure (there still are some). In that case you'll probably want to buy a different enclosure for your external drive — making sure the new enclosure uses an Oxford 911 FireWire bridge, which will ensure that it's bootable.
Assuming your drive is bootable, the next question will be whether your audio hardware runs OK through the PC-card FW adapter. If it does, you should be set.
It is not possible to boot any Mac running OS 9 or OS X from any USB device. So don't bother to try booting from a USB drive, or from a combination FW & USB drive through a USB connection.

  • 2 DV Cameras on same firewire card.

The computer I was using for our broadcast did not have any Firewire ports, so I added a 3 port Firewire card. When I have 2 DV cameras hooked up to it VC3 will only recognize one and the other will be black.
Would it be better practice to use separate Firewire cards for each camera? Does anyone else have any problems running multiple DV Camcorders through Firewire?

Thanks for the reply. Just a follow up, I added a second Firewire card and all is well. No problems using to DV Camcorders now.

  • Firewire card with multiple controllers

    Quick question....
I am looking for a firewire card for connecting 2 cameras.  Will I be able to use a standard PCI-E card or will I need to look for one with one controller per port....  Most share a single controller voer multiple ports.  I've had problems int eh past with multiple ports on one card, but this may have been a PCI card with limited system bandwidth.....
    Ideas anyone?
The cameras will be most likely 1280x1024 RGB cameras with 60FPS.
    Cheers for any help forthcoming.

    Nobody, no?
The cameras are actually monochrome, 8-bit not RGB (24-bit) and only go up to 30Hz.....
    I mean theoretically a FW400 card should handle a 1024pixel x 1280pixel x 8bit x 30Hz (314 Mbit/s without overhead) picture no problem but adding a second camera will more than saturate the bus.....
Anyone know of a decent PCI-E FW card which has two ports with a seperate controller for each?  Please?

  • Cannot use Firewire Card on 10.2.8 OSX Wallstreet G3

I recently upgraded my G3 Wallstreet to 10.2.8. It currently has a minimal set of applications and I added Firefox which seems to run fine. Internet connectivity is great!
I bought and Adaptec AFW-1430A Firewire for Notebooks PCMCIA card. It came with a CD which just has OS 9 installer and extensions.
The card is recognized by the PB but the menubar icon drop down shows it as 'Unknown Vendor' (grayed out) and 'Firewire Controller' grayed out. The only option is 'Eject Card', which works fine.
I contacted their tech support which told me that the drivers for the card should be in OSX.
How can I figure that out?
Also, someone they asked me what my boot ROM is. System profiler doesn't show a boot room ID.

    footie,
I have a cheap FireWire card and it is not be recognized by the Wallstreet in 9.x unless the card is present and I restart. At this point, my FireWire HD is hot-swappable; I can mount/unmount it as long as the FireWire card is not removed...then I have to restart to get the card mounted.
The same card has no issues in 10.x, meaning the FireWire PC card itself is hot-swappable. However, perform a restart to cover all bases.
If you are working in OSX and the HD is not mounting...
    - Do you have the Finder Preferences set so HDs appear on the desktop? If not, the FW HD should still appear in a Finder window.
    - Is this a known-good HD?
    - Are you using the correct and known-good FireWire cable?
    - With the FW HD connected, open your System Profiler and see if the HD is reported.
    - Launch your Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. Does the HD appear in the left column?
    - If you have installed the extensions for FireWire in 9.x, see if the FW HD will mount. These are the three necessary extensions:
    FireWire Enabler
    FireWire Support
    FireWire CardBus Enabler
Once they are installed and you have restarted, check your Extensions Manager to make sure they are enabled (they should be default).

  • New Zen trouble adding a memory card (not seen)?

0New Zen trouble adding a memory card (not seen)?8I have a new zen 4gb unit and love it, saw it has a memory card slot so i stuck an 8gb sdhc sandisk 3 extreme memory card in there, figured I could dump more fun stuff in there on it but when i use the zen explorer i don't see that card.
I formatted the sdhc card in fat 32 and named it sd4zen yet when its in the zen and i check my computer I am not seeing the card in the windows menus to drag stuff over onto for the zen nor is it showing in any of the zen media explorer areas.
Do i need to dump stuff onto the memory card externally (thru a card reader first) then insert it and access that thru the memory part of the zen menu, or are the zens not able to read from an sdhc sd card or is 8 gb too big (compatability)?
Thanks for any help on this,
    Bill

I am a dork, a few mins messing with it i realized in the main menu of the zen with the card inserted hit removable disk and hook up via usb, now my computer sees the sd4zen dri've and i can dump more fun stuff for zen on there...
