Adding a graphic or photo behind a text frame in InDesign CS

Hi Everyone,
I'm hoping I can get some help please on a problem I'm having. I'm switching from QuarkxPress to InDesign CS - after having it for nearly six years! - thought it was time learn InDesign. So far, I really like it. But, I've discovered a small problem I never encountered with Quark but I'm having it with InDesign. I have placed a vector graphic separately behind a Headline text frame (also tried a photograph). For some reason, the vector graphic totally covers up the Headline text. I have tried "send to back," that didn't work, it still covered the text. I made sure that there was no fill color at all. I even tried putting the graphic on a separate layer "behind" the Headline text and that still won't work. Could someone please help me. I would so appreciate it.

Does your image use text wrap? Unlike Quark, by default InDesign's text wrap affects text both in front and behind the wrapped object. This is good becasue if you use transparency you want the text onthe very top to prevent unwanted outlining or rasterization at ooutput. You can change the behavior to mimic Quark in the application preferences, or you can open the text frame options for a frame you don't want to be affected and check the box to Ignore Text Wrap.
The other posiblility is a stacking order problem. If your text is on a master page it will be behind any objects onthe same or higher layer on the document page. On any given layer, master objects are always behind live objects on the page.

• Global change to the size of a text frame in InDesign 5.5?

Is there a way to make a global change to the size of a text frame in InDesign 5.5? I just laid out a book and the size needs to go up half an inch.

If you have worked properly and have done following:
Set up Masters with margins and columns,
Aligned all text frames with the margins,
Turned on Layout Adjustment,
You will only change the margins on the Master and it will change every page.
If not …
you have to do it manually.

• Creating Scrollable text frames in InDesign

I've been trying to create scrollable text frames in InDesign CS6 and, for the life of me, cannot figure out how to do so for an interactive PDF.
I've done so for touchscreen devices before through DPS and the scrollable frame option, but I've never tried to do it for something non-touchscreen/mobile. I don't even know if it's possible, but I am sending this to someone who may not have touchscreen access with touchscreen scroll functionality and I wouldn't want to risk a good portion of text to go unread because of a lack-of functionality.
So, I guess my question is: Is there a way to create a scrollable text field for an interactive PDF that could be scrolled through using a mouse or keyboard?
Thanks in advance!

No. It's DPS only.

• IDCS3 When adding a document to a book, the text frame of the subsequent documents in the book moves

Hi
I've been working on a 700 or so book containing about 115 documents. These book's documents consist of a main text frame and I've been adding them gradually to the book document. The problem is whenever I add a document to the book or change the order of the documents, the main text frame of the subsequent documents in the book moves on its x axis even when it is locked. To correct the problem I've been moving them to their original place manually but this is a real chaos. Moreover I've noticed that not every text frame in a document moves but most of them does. I don't know what is causing the problem so either don't know how to solve it. I would like to prevent this from happening again cause I've got to add more documents to the book. Can anybody help?

• How to enable the script label of a text frames in indesign using applescript

hi all,
am using Indesign CS2 with applescript..
Using script I have to open a template in indesign and flow the word document into it...
I can able to flow the word document into the template using "Place" command..but script labels of the text frames gets disabled...
I need the script labels to be enabled...
can anybody help me
thanks in advance

Script labels can't be disabled, so I'm not sure what your problem is -- perhaps seeing some code could help. Could it be that you're referencing a page item by label, but it is not responding because the item is part of a group?

• Is it possible to select an anchored object in a text frame in InDesign in a script?

I would like to know if it is possible to write a script to select an anchored object in a text frame. All the scripts I have found so far do not work on anchored object.

• Is there a setting where a text frame (border, color, etc) will be visible only when it has content?

I use data merge a decent amount, often when I am quick prototyping decks of cards for games. (Talk about an awesome tool for quickly cranking out a hundred different cards). I was wondering if it possible to have a text frame style (say a 1pt solid black border, or a yellow background etc.) appear only when there is text inside that frame.
For example the cards need to have different combinations of text on each one. The lower part of this particular card has 30 data field placeholders (15 text frames and 15 graphic frames) that are linked back to my .txt file with data merge. (In the first image below, all 30 data fields have data in them, the other images only have some data applied) The text frames hold the two letter code, the graphics frame is basically a .png of either a rectangle or oval which is on a layer behind the text frame.
It would be awesome if a text frame border was only present when there was content in the text frame. That way I could eliminate all of the graphics frames in this particular case. Is this possible? I knid of don't want to ask this, but is it possible through scripting with some sort of conditional statement? (Iknow very little about scripting except that it exists to do certain tasks on a as needed basis)
I'm using InDesign CC on Mac OSX 10.7.5
Thanks!

There's no one solution. Depends on the context.
When we know what we have and where we want to go, everything becomes simple ...
In your case, the solution I prefer is that with grep styles.
Why? because it is truly magical.
The beginning...
All you finally have to do in the data file is inserting columns of calculation. We can talk later.
This solution with grep style is very simple to define. In ID and Excel (for instance). Because I know how to do. I understand It could be not so simple for another person.

• Text alignment inside custom text frame

I created a custom text frame by combining a triangle and a rectangle using Pathfinder->Add but when I added text, this is how it looked -- but I wanted it to look this way.

Ketchapay2 wrote:
Thanks! I'll try that now. UPDATE: When I applied rounded corners, it also rounded the pointer which is supposed to be sharp.
Well, that used to work, I think.
In any case, I just tried something else and it seems to work. Make the round corner text frame and the the triangle as you did before. Put the triangle BEHIND the text frame and make the shape. There is however, another potential problem to this technique -- the text will want to flow into the triangle area. I don't think this is escapable without either putting the text into a seond rectangular frame in front, or adding an empty frame in the triangular area and applying text wrap to push the text back into line.

• Can an InCopy editor add, remove and edit a text frame placed inside the main story text frame?

I think I already know the answer to this which is - no. I'll explain why I am asking the question in a second, but the reason I think the simple answer is no is because - text frames are controlled by a designer in the layout file, an editor using incopy can only edit the text and images placed inside text frames, and so cannot resize them, add or delete them.
Ok, so the reason I have asked this.
Is there a way around this so that editors in incopy can edit certain types of text frame that are contained within the main text frame? I'm using these text frames to contain specific paragraph styles, giving them a boxed look and also with an anchored icon in the top left of the text frame depending on the type of paragraph it is. See screenshot as an example of a green text frame that I am using to contain paragraphs of type "tip".
If it is not possible for editors in incopy to add, edit or resize these text frames (green tip frame in the example above), then how else can I style these paragraphs to give the same visual appearance, but without the use of wrapping them in a text frame?
One (not so good) way around this is for the designer to add the text frames in the layout file after he gets the content back from the editor, then moving the "tip" paragraphs into these newly created text frames. However when the editor updates the content in incopy and gets these new text frames in their copy, they can not then delete them if they wish to, or if they add or reduce content inside of these green text frames then the frames dont grow to fit their edited content. So I dont think its a solution for the designer to control the adding, removing and resizing of these frames.
UPDATE: I have just discovered that once a text frame has been placed into the document by the designer and the editor updates their copy in incopy- they can then use the "Position Tool" to select that text frame - allowing them to resize it, or delete it! Fantastic. But would the editor be able to add these frames in themselves to begin with? Maybe have a document containing all of the objects available to them, copy and paste one of them into the main document and edit its content? Does anyone have any advice on how to go about this? Essentially I would like the editor to control the insertion, editing and removal of these inline text frames.

True. But when all I am trying to achieve is a border around a paragraph, use of a table seems overkill to me. But if thats the only solution I have so far then I will have to go down that route.
It would be useful to have an object libraries panel in InCopy so that editors can drag across predefined text frames into their doc via InCopy, but I cant see that option in InCopy. is there one? I have also thought about exporting the frames as seperate InDesign Snippets and saving them to an objects folder, then when an editor needs to insert one into their doc they simply use File > Place > "Choose required text frame snippet". However I have found that InCopy can't place InDesign snippets so that theory was a failure. Is there another format I could use to save the objects and bring them into InCopy? List below shows my findings so far for trying to save/export a text frame from InDesign and then import into InCopy:
InDesign Snippet (.idms) - can't import into InCopy
InDesign Document (.indd) - imports content as an image - only editable in InDesign
InDesign Template (.indt) - imports content as an image - only editable in InDesign
InDesign Library (.indl) - can't import into InCopy - no panel available in InCopy for object libraries (that I can see...)
InCopy Markup (.icml) - only imports the text, loses the text frame

• Apply different font styles in single text frame

hi all
how can i apply different font styles in a single text frame using indesign script ?
for example :
"dasdnasndasndlasndnasdlasdasdas"
may i know is it possible to do that and how to do that ?
thanks

You can set (as well as read) every single property of any text range with scripts. This is javascript; it assumes you text cursor is inside a frame with some text.
* Setting some specific characters to a color:
app.selection[0].parentStory.characters.itemByRange(5,10).fillColor = "Red";
* Change the font of words:
app.selection[0].parentStory.words[3].appliedFont = "Arial\tBold";
* .. or just the style:
app.selection[0].parentStory.lines[2].fontStyle = "Italic";
* .. or any other attribute (this one requires you to have at least 5 characters selected):
app.selection[0].characters[5].underline = true;
Of course these operations are not limited to something you select; they work the same with any text frames you can refer to.
app.activeDocument.textFrames[1].paragraphs[2].appliedCharacterStyle = "charstyle";

• How do I unthread text frames in CS4 InDesign Mac?

I've looked everywhere and tried what I found in Adobe help. I can't FOR THE LIFE OF ME figure out how to unthread text frames in InDesign CS4 [Mac].
Please help. I know it must be simple.
Thank you,
Margot

Run the SplitStory scipt thats in the samples in the scripts panel.
A waord of caution, though. Splitting a threaded story caused ID to treat the text at the top of each frame as a new paragraph, even if it was caninued from a previous frame. This can result in unwanted changes like an indent, if such is called for in the paragraph style, or an extra number or bullet item in a list.

• What is the best way to import a graphic? & How do I create a text frame for a figure caption?

Hello all! I've been working from the FM book for almost 2 hrs trying to figure this out, so now I need your help. I am almost to this point:
Problem I: Importing a graphic
First of all, which is the best way?
-Insert an anchor frame and then import the graphic into the frame OR
-Just insert the graphic and get the anchor frame by default
Here’s my importing and sizing problem:
I hit ENTER to make a new paragraph line (side note: the book says make a new paragraph by hitting ENTER, import the graphic, and then ESC m+p to shrink wrap so that you can avoid the graphic overlapping the above text. I do exactly this (I believe), but my graphic still overlaps the above text when I shrink wrap. What the...?)
I insert an anchored frame with position Below Current Line and alignment CENTER (I chose to the insert anchor frame, since this way I have control over its alignment, correct?)
Anchor frame is selected when I import my image file
In the Imported Graphic Scaling box, what do I select if my file is HUGE (3072x2304)?
-Fit in selected rectangle (when I choose this the image imports small and fits in the anchored frame with lots of white space around it)
-72 dpi
-75 dpi
-150 dpi
-300 dpi
-Custom dpi: 96 (I’ve tried changing this to a smaller number (20) and I get a message that says “cannot handle a bitmap of that size.”)
I’ve had the best luck with selecting FIT IN SELECTED RECTANGLE, and then I just scale the image with my shift+click. If I choose 72 dpi or Custom, my image imports HUGE, and I just can’t manage it. I don’t have a method for resizing these images outside of FM.
Problem II: Creating a text frame for a caption
Once I have chosen FIT IN SELECTED RECTANGLE, I try to insert a text box underneath the image (and inside the anchor frame) to type a caption in it.
In Create New Text Frame box, the default is Number 1 and Gap 0.25. I click SET.
Next, I double-click inside the text frame to begin typing, but the cursor is OUTSIDE and UNDERNEATH the text frame! What the heck??? I’ve done this before and it has worked just fine. Then I had another problem where when I did get the text inside the text frame, I would select the text frame to move it, and it left the text behind! (I moved the frame but the text was separated from it and left behind.)
THANK YOU in advance for your help. I hope I wrote this out clearly enough. I appreciate those who respond. P.S. I'm in FM 10.

My favorite method is to use a one-cell table for graphics and captions.
Import the graphic by reference into the table cell. Create a "Caption"
paragraph tag and assign it to the table title. (The title can be set
for above or below the table cell. I prefer below.) Now, whenever you
insert this table, it will be ready for graphic and caption. Another
advantage of this method is that graphic and caption always stay
together at page/column breaks.
When you create the table format above, assign it to have a -2.0 space
above. Then, create a paragraph tag, such as "TableAnchor" and assign it
-2.0 pt font size and -2.0 space below. (You can substitute a different
point size, but it must be the same in all three places. The TableAnchor
paragraph will hold the table and these settings let tables fit against
the top margin where necessary. Otherwise, they dip down a bit.
I wrote this from memory, so I hope I remembered all the steps!

• The dropdown menu in the banner should be behind the text fields.

Hi Andy,
In our Application we have three Menus...The problem we are facing in that when ever we move the cursor, a drop down list will appear.. which is covering the text fields...
The dropdown menu in the banner should be behind the text fields.
Can u pls help me in this...
anoo..

Hi Anoo,
(You can actually ask questions to everyone, not just me!)
Normally, dropdown menus are supposed to be on top of all other items, so the user can pick an option from the menu. In fact, usually the problem is that select lists in IE appear on top of menus, not the other way around!
What you may have to look in to is adding a z-index value to items. Have a look at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms531188(VS.85).aspx
z-indexes determine the order in which items appear when two or more occupy the same space on the page. The higher the number the nearer to the top that item is. You can use negative or positive numbers. So, if item A has a z-index of 1 and item B has a z-index of 2, then item B will appear on top of item A.
A z-index can be set as a style on your menus:
<........ style="z-index:-1".....>Andy
