Adding a grunge texture to text in InDesign CS5.

Hi!
I would like to know the best way to add a grunge texture in InDesign. Here is an example I did using Pathfinder/Extract:
There is however at least two problems to this technique:
I have to convert my text into outlines;
Seems like the Pathfinder "merges" both shapes together forever... If was in Illustrator, I would have used the Clipping Mask or the Opacity Mask. That would allow me to move my texture as needed in the future.
I tried using the Paste Into method, but this technique ALSO seems to have at least two problems:
I have to convert my text into outlines;
Doing Paste Into keeps the color of my texture. The problem is, I need the "holes" to be transparent, not black!
Am I missing something? Is there ways to do this with Effects?
Thanks!
Chris.

I wonder in this case where you want editable text and transparency if setting the text in Photoshop and placing is the way to go. So in Photoshop set the text with a textured mask like this:
Then place in ID—all you have to do is Option-Doubleclick the text to edit in PS:

  • Anchoring objects to text in InDesign CS5.0

    Hi,
I'm trying to convert a heavily styled book with lots of photos and charts to Kindle. When I export to Kindle, it's a mess. Is it possible to anchor objects to text in CS5? I know CS5.5 can do it, but I'm having a hard time figuring it out in CS5.
Any helpful hints for making this conversion as easy as possible ... and without knowing any HTML would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I highly recommend Elizabeth Castro's ebook to learn the basics of creating EPUB files—"EPUB Straight to the Point"
Formatting ebooks - EPUB Straight to the Point
Here is how she suggests you do it in InDesign CS5:
Place the cursor in the flow of your book where you want to illustration to go (at the beginning of a paragraph).
Press Return to create a separate paragraph for the illustration
Apply an Illustration paragraph style. She suggests setting autoleading so the paragraph expands to the height of the illustration.
Choose File > Place to place the illustration in that paragraph.
If you need a caption, press return to create a new paragraph and apply the Caption style.

  • Help in copying part of threaded text in InDesign CS5

When I copy part of a threaded text box that is linked to another text box in InDesign CS5 and then paste it to another location, the text from the first text box appears in the pasted version. The remaining text that was linked from the first text box to the second does not appear in the pasted new text box.

Nor should it. You only cpoied what you selected, and the new frame is not threaded to anything.

  • HELP!  Grey footnote reference text in InDesign CS5

Footnote reference text appears in illegible grey highlighted form in InDesign CS5.  Footnote text itself retains numbering and styles.  How do I fix this

Is the highlight pink? That means a missing font. Check Type>Document Footnote Options and see what paragraph style you have set for Footnote Formatting, then check that paragraph style. Also, click into the footnote to see if the type has any local override that is changing it from what is defined in the paragraph style (look for the + next to the paragraph style's name).

  • Problem with black text in InDesign CS5

    Hi,
I just got an information from my printer that there is a probem with some text in a PDF files which I've sent to them: they appear in 4 colors. I've exported the file with rich blacsk, for printing (best quality print). Any idea why this might have happened?
    Thanks in advance

need more information about the file and how the PDF was made.
is the text that the printer is concerned with:
    * text composed in the indesign file; or
    * text within an advertisement or graphic made by yourself or a third party?
prior to making the PDF, did the OP check the separations using the separations panel and see four colour blacks, or did the black appear fine?
how was the PDF made? using a default setting (listed in square brackets within the PDF options) or a customised setting made by the OP? what happens when using a different setting, such as [PDFX3 2002] ?
the only way that i can get [black] text from indesign to fault like the OP says is to export the PDF using the [Smallest File Size] setting which would turn the entire job RGB... and create other prepress headaches which the printer would complain about first.
however, if the type was DELIBERATELY made rich black in indesign (e.g. process colours in addition to black to make the black) then i can see why the printer would complain. IMHO I will use rich blacks in solid fills which appear over pictures so that the pictures beneath do not show through and to show a "richer than normal" black... but I WOULD NOT use it on black type under 60pt in size, moreso if the type is thin. Doing so makes it harder to register the colours on-press and isn't normally necessary on body type.

  • Pasting text into indesign CS5 causes constant crashing

We have a problem with one of our computers and indesign CS5. When they paste text from any other program into indesign it crashes. It may be OK for 10 minutes or so but then crashes. This is a big job with lots of business cards and they need to copy and paste text from excel and then into indesign. She gets through 4 or 5 and then it crashes. We have deleted preferences a few times and tried pasting into text edit first but it always ends up crashing indesign. It happens when text is pasted from a pdf or word also.
    Any ideas?

Not a very timely reply but, I was being vexed as well with copying from one InDesign document to another.  The original and the destination were both two color newsletters.  I would copy an entire page and switch to the destination document to paste it.  Unfortunately, once the Command-C was initiated, the swirling ball of death eventually resulted in a crash.  After three attempts and restarting my computer, I tried it again but, same result.
Then, I copied only one element at a time (graphic, then a text box, grouped text and graphic...etc.)  Not until I came to a single Placed EPS graphic (Illustrator EPS) did it initiate the death spiral. (I'd previously deleted all unused colors just in case)
I opened the offending file and noticed that a radial gradient contained a spot color and a CMYK mix (instead of a percentage of the same spot color).  That was all it appeared to be... so far.  A bit odd that THAT would hang such a powerful suite of software.
I plan to try a full page copy/paste to see if that was indeed the problem.
Computer Info: 2009 MAC Tower, 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8GB RAM, OS 10.6.8, CS6. (and I was completely sober)
PS: I tried the full page copy/paste and, it worked without a hiccup.

  • Can't drag objects/text in InDesign CS5

I'm running Indesign CS5 on a Mac, 10.6.8 operating system. InDesign was working great, and then I stopped being able to drag items. I can select items (both with the regular selection tool and the direct selection toll), but I can't move them.  I can move them with the arrow buttons on my keyboard. I tried switching out my mouse, no luck. I tried a new document, same problem.  I restarted, same problem. I read in forums to erase InDesign's preferences, I did that, but the problem remains. None of the items are locked, etc. I have no idea what to do. Is there some keyboard shortcut I might have hit that preventing my from dragging items? Is this just an InDesign bug?  I recently installed the new updates for the entire creative suite, could that have done something? I'm not sure what else to do. Any help would be great!

  • Adding a Drop Shadow to text in InDesign CS6

I have no character styles in my recent installation of Cloud InDesign CS6 and want to know how I import these effects.

Character Styles and Drop Shadow, (an object-level effect), are not related. There is nothing to import.
To apply a drop shadow to text, select (black arrow) the text frame and choose Drop Shadow from the fx menu at the bottom of the Effects panel, (Window > Effects). The Drop Shadow dialog opens where you set the parameters of the effect.

  • Entering Vertical Japanese text in Indesign CS5

Can anyone point me in the direction of a plugin that will allow me to use the Western European version of ID CS5 to set vertical Japanese text? I don't need to do this very often and the texts are always short (a few lines only), so I can't justify investing in the Japanese version of Indesign.
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but a search of the forum yields nothing.
Thanks in advance for your help,

Thanks Peter. That was the thread I was remembering. I downloaded the CS2 template referred to in the messages. It converted to CS5 and worked flawlessly. Saved me hours of messing around.

  • Text flow to additional pages at end of document, how to set up in InDesign CS5

I've added additional pages to a document in InDesign CS5 -- but how do I set up my document so when text is supposed to get pushed to the additional pages the text flows from page to page on these extra added pages? Right now I've added additional pages to the end of my document and when the text from the original document gets pushed past the end it disappears and not continued on the additional pages.
    Thanks,

Yeah, container may not be the best word to describe a book, which is why I put it in quotes, and I certainly didn't mean to imply that you can no longer open and edit the files outside the book. Doing that, however, means next time you open the book ID will complain and ask you to update things. No big deal, but if you open through the book panel it will save the changes through the book and that won't happen. No difference to the inidividual files.
Historically - as in *roff and other UNIX-based processing programs like xroff, nroff, etc - books that were published from multiple individual component files, were produced by the use of a "makefile." You'd need to create the makefile by typing the names of the component files in the book order, along withtheir specifications, such as starting page side, starting page number, etc. You'd save the makefile with a name to preserve all this information, then you'd run the "make" command-line command in which you'd name the makefile, and include arguments such as which printer, how many copies, even a job priority, to avoid unnecessarily hogging the network bandwidth and free the printer for higher-priority jobs. As GUI capable hardware and software progressed, command-line makefiles became GUI book files - still, basically lists of component files and processing instructions.
One important value of book files that don't contain component files is that different book files can control the processing of the same component files in different ways, as well as produce books that use some of the same files and some different files - for different audiences, different product sets, etc. Yes, opening a book file may warn that component files have changed - a good warning to the user to pay attention - and they offer a way to update the collection of component files so that the book file produces the desired result. Here's where some folks may be surprised when they find that sometimes a print or export dialog box, either retains or forgets the settings used for the previous run; the result may be printing multiple copies instead of one, printing to a different printer than expected, or exporting a PDF that's not suitable for the desired printer.
The short story is that while book processing lists that are separate from the component files offer flexibility and reusability, but they also require that the user pays attention.
Did I commingle Autoflow and Smart Text Reflow in some way? I didn't think so.
Not at all. I'm just extra-sensitive to my own experiences with not having taking pains to keep clear on the differences between these similar-sounding terms.
My point was that HOW your text was put into the file to begin with, coupled with how your settings for STR are configured, is going to control whether subsequent editing triggers reflow. It's possible to have STR enabled and not have it work because you've limited it to master text frames and you haven't actually used any. An understanding of how autoflow works when placing text is important to being able to troubleshoot why STR is not behaving as expected (not to mention why text frames may not be adjusting if you edit the master page).
One reason for the confusions that come from working with Smart Text Reflow is that there's no indication in the UI, that STR is enabled, and when it's enabled, there's no indication in the UI of which STR settings are in effect, except by seeing the behavior. Are pages added at the end or story, section, or document? You may see them added in the Pages panel, if it's open, on screen, and if the appropriate portion of the document is in view; you may see them added on screen if the appropriate portion of the document is on screen - the end of story, section, or document.
In InDesign's Help, Smart Text Reflow is covered in only a few paragraphs. As you noted, there's much more to it.

  • Page numbering in InDesign CS5.5 not working

21 Chapters have been added to InDesign CS5.5's Book File feature. However, only the individual chapter numbers are shown, not the cumulative numbering system. Can anyone please help resolve this issue.

Eugene, sorry I can see how my question is not clear. My issue is this: I've added 21 chapters of a book to InDesign CS5.5 Book File. When I did so I expected all the chapters to paginate with consecutive numbering. But all I see in the column beside the chapter title are the page numbers (folio) that were created in each chapter. Since all my chapters start on the right hand page the beginning number is alway 2. Each chapter has used the same Master pages template and are spreads.
Hope this clarifies my issue. Thanks.

  • Why can't I get open type features to work properly with an open type font on InDesign CS5.5?

I installed a very complete set of styles of an opentype font with Font Book – Mac OS X 10.9.4 – but when I tried to format a sample text on InDesign CS5.5 I noticed that I could not use the opentype features on the Open Type menu as I usually do.
    Could anyone help me, please?

It's ffScala Sans, but has separate files for small caps, figures, etc.
I was trying to use small caps, lining figures and superscripts when I
noticed none of the OT features are available.

  • Indesign CS5 with PNG file exporting as a PDF file but the text is random bold

    Hello,
I am looking for help to teach me how to solve this problem.
I use Indesign CS5 to make a proposal. I set the page marker and sub title in the master page.
Of course, there are including dozens of pages and some pictures here.
And one of these page, I place a PNG file and type some text.
When I export this file as a PDF file, one page, which is including PNG file, the text becomes random bold.
Therefore, I have used PSD file to cover the PNG file. But finally getting the same problem.
So does anyone can help me how to solve this problem?
Thanks so much for your help.

This sounds like a known issue with transparency on the page. When transparency is introduced ID uses a differnt method, apparently, of rendering text on that page and it appears bolder on screen and can print that way on low resolution devices like desktop printers. It usually is not a problem on press output.
The only way to mainatian consistency would be to introduce transparency on all pages, perhaps by adding a transparent object to your master page.

  • InDesign CS5 - Text won't align with shape

I've created shapes in InDesign CS5 and then added text boxes (separate elements).  When I try to align the text and the shape, the text box acts as if the wrap function is on and the text is not visible.  I've checked and the settings for both the shape and the text box are set to "no wrap."
I've tried searching for a solution online, but the answers I get are mostly related to wrapping text around a shape or other non-related issues.

Yes - I did that first, thinking I was "hiding" the text.  But the text is in front...
The advice by Willi Adelberger helped - putting the text directly into the shape seems to be working, though I noticed that the text is still not quite aligned correctly...
