Adding a Harddrive....questions

Is there a maximum harddrive size the macbook allows? I just got a 160 gig HD from newegg today and I just want to know if it will work without an issue.
Has anyone here rigged there macbooks with a 160 gigger?
Any issues?
Hope to hear from you!

Yep. Actually put your OSX disc in, shut the computer down, remove the HD and replace it with you new one, then when you start it up hold down the C key and it'll boot to the disc that's already inside your MacBook.
If you look at Apple's PDF manual on replacing the drive you won't see the step (unless they've amended it) to remove the bracket on the old drive and put it on the new one. But it's pretty straight forward and you'll be fine.

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?

  • Captiave 2 - Adding Buttons to Question Slides

I need to use the Captivate Question Slide "maker" to create
interactive questions with navigation back to the "Jeopardy-esque"
main page. When doing so, the question slide maker prevents adding
    buttons/navigation, etc.
    Any work arounds, hints, suggestions?
    Thanks...

Hi Beta Bob and welcome to our community
As you have seen, you cannot insert interactive objects
(Buttons, Click Boxes or Text Entry Boxes) on Question slides.
The only workaround I can think of is to sort of simulate the
question slide using these objects on a standard slide.

  • External harddrive questions

I have a WD My Passport 320 GB for Mac and I just saved a 20 Gb folder to it. In addition, I deleted (command+backspace) a few older folders I had stored there.
The only thing left should be a 20 GB folder. However, when I select Get Info, it says:
Used 54 GB (should say 20)
Available 265 GB (should say about 300)
I have several questions about this:
    1. Why does the file size not update?
    2. How can I make it update? (Does it help if I Securely Empty the trash can?)
    3. Does this mean that only 265 GB is available?
And followup... I went to Disk Utility to consider Erasing the external harddrive and selected Security Option 2: Zero Out Data. Then I went to Erase Free Space and got started but as it was going to take 5 hours I quit the application...
    4. Would this be a good idea and exactly what should I select - have never used DU before...
There is Erase Free Space or just Erase... I can resave my folder again in needed, so I could delete all of it if that's better.
    5. Which security option should I use?
    6. Did I mess up my current folder by briefly getting it started, for 10s or so, and then quitting?
    Any help most welcome!

If the files you trashed were on the WD external, then yes, it will have to be connected to the computer when you empty the Trash. Every drive has its own Trash folder on it, and that folder won't be emptied unless the drive containing it is connected to the computer when you choose the Empty Trash command.
Yes, you should run the Repair Disk command in Disk Utility before you empty the Trash. That will enable DU to make sure all the files on the external drive, including those in the Trash, are correctly identified and their locations on the disk are known accurately before anything is actually deleted from the drive's directory.
Don't erase the drive unless you want to lose the 20GB folder you just copied to it. And if you do want to erase the drive, don't bother with the Write Zeroes option unless you have unusual security requirements or you suspect the drive has hardware problems. The Write Zeroes command can also be run overnight if you do have a good reason for running it.

  • New Harddrive Question.

I had some computer problems, reinstalled windows, and now I cannot manually manage my music. I'm giving a full run-down here if anyone can help.......
My harddrive started having problems, so I backed up my music, bought a new drive, and reinstalled windows.
I put my music back on my new hard drive, reinstalled iTunes, directed it to my music library, and waited while it added all my music.
After that, I connected my iPhone 3G to my computer, it did not recognize the library. I expected this, knowing full well that it can only sync music with one library. I said OK to the dialog that said it would have to delete my media files and start over.
Now, all of my music is gone from my iPhone, it is associated with this library, but I cannot manually manage files from within iTunes. I can drag the file to my iPhone, but when I get it over the music icon, a red X appears underneath and nothing happens when I let go of the mouse button.
Has this happened to anyone else ever? Is there a way to fix this? What went wrong anyways?

To each his/her own, but I've never seen much benefit with manually managing music. I've always made use of iTunes playlists, so I choose selected playlists to be transferred to my iPhone. If I want to remove a song from my iPhone that is in a playlist selected to be transferred to my iPhone without removing the song from the playlist, I have sync only checked songs and videos selected for my iPhone sync preferences. I uncheck the song in the playlist in iTunes followed by a sync. Or I can remove songs from a selected playlist followed by a sync to remove the songs from my iPhone, or add additional songs to a selected playlist followed by a sync to add the songs to my iPhone.
Since this did not work, try an iPhone reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so.
If no change after a reset, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes - from your iPhone's backup first and if no change, followed by restoring as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.

  • Harddrive questions. Experienced opinions

Hey guys, I need experienced opinions. Right now I have my Boot drive partitioned in half. One half has my apps, the other half has my entire library of sounds, samples, 3rd party fx, etc...I haven't had much problems so far (and it's been like this for years), other than the ususal Logic bugs. I want to move my Library off that partition to an entirely discrete drive (7200rpm IDE) that's installed internally. This discrete drive used to hold my working sessions, but now I've got 2 external 7200rpm drives, 1 for sessions and 1 for back-ups.
Would it better to get the library off the partition and put it on a drive discrete from the boot, or is that partition okay to use for such purposes?
Also, is the firewire drive a stable way to work on sessions, or is an internal drive going to be faster and more stable? All drives are 7200rpm but I'm not sure about the speed and reliability of internal vs. external
    Thanks

    Hey Noah,
I don't have an answer for the libraries to discrete drive part of your question, but it does seem to make sense to put it on an internal drive of it's own. What I can bring to the table though are my own experiences with my g4. Through the advice of someone else on this forum I found MacGurus whom I purchased a SeriTek pci sata card from. Then I added 2 WD Raptor 10K rpm/74gb internal sata drives. After a total clean install of everything I must tell you (for the first time since I bought my mac) I experienced speed and stability. Of course it (the card) occupies a pci slot, but for the difference in performance to me it was totally worth it.
I did try to use my Glyph firewire external drive (before all of the sata items were added)to run my projects from but it didn't flow smoothly.I now use it for backup only!
    Hope this helps.
    cheers,
    kevin

  • Harddrive Questions...

So my harddrive stopped working... brought it into the mac store, genius ran disk warrior, things didn't get any better, in fact probably just a little less better.
    1) what is the least expensive way to try and recover data; the harddrive has been removed in hopes that data can be rescued
    2) been looking on line for new harddrive. Probably have to by a new computer for editing anyway, but need something in the meantime. How does one go about purchasing a new harddrive & where do you look? How do you know which companies are reliable?
    3) Can i use my powerbook that no longer has a harddrive as a monitor for a desktop computer such as the g4 power pc? if so how?
    thank you...
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi tjk,
Thank you SO much for guiding me.
and Thank you for the prompt reply.
    Ok, answers/comments to your reply:
    1) Since the HD is out, I will give the HD enclosure a try... I take it you would recommend purchasing from the three places you mentioned in #2.
My harddrive when in the powerbook, first gave me the small grey screen with several language telling me to restart or reboot (can't remember) but I am learning that that is called kernal panic... there was noise. Everytime I would reboot it would give me the same message. I brought it to the genius bar and he suggested using Disk Warrior. He told me that there was a chance that it could work... but if it got stuck on #5 (something about slow...) then I wasn't getting my data back... when the "slow" note came up he cancelled the operation and sent me on my way. After that the computer would boot to grey w/apple then blue with folder ? then folder w/smiley then a small grey box would appear and everything would freeze. I would have to pop the battery out to turn off the machine. I removed the HD in hopes that it could be put in an external case and I could be directed as to what to do next.
**How should i store the HD now that it is out?
    2) I am not sure which model I have... 7200rpm was suggested but that was without knowing what model I have.
    3) this questions was regarding a powermac that was loaned to me that I was interested in using the titanium's monitor as a substitute for the chunky boxy monitor... that computer suffered a kernal panic last night just after I installed the Airport that was in the Powerbook that crashed. I got online fine, was running Software Update and surfing the net, then all of a sudden the small black screen came on telling me to restart my computer in several languages! Now that computer isn't booting and gets stuck at blue screen.!

  • Adding first server questions

We are moving and are going to be adding a server (Quad 2.5 G5 w/ 2x500 HDs). We are currently have the internet connection coming in (static IP) to an AEBS running two printers and an AEX on the same network running the other. All the machines use the wireless network for internet access and printing. Email is via a hosted Exchange solution and another company hosts our web site. We have one spare machine that does limited file server work, but most folks have stuff on their hard drives.
I have read the manuals on OS X server and a couple of after market books and, since much of it is somewhat familiar, I am relatively confident about many of the software setup issues. However, I have gotten some conflicting advice about the physical configuration and hoped you guys could help.
We want to be able to use the server as a file server, with better access control than the sharing preference, have remote users connect with a VPN, use the wireless network for internet access and printing. We might want to host web sites via an intranet or be able to access them from outside, but don't want them to be associated with the domain name that is the real web site.
My first question is about the interface between the airport network and the server. I was originally told that the cable to the internet should go into one of the servers ports and the other should connect to an AEBS. I should set up the server to act as a firewall and serve up DCHP addresses. However, some of what I have read says that this is a bad idea--that the AEBS or something else should be the first in line and that the server should be connected to the LAN port of the AEBS. Which is best?
    Other questions:
Should I use the server print services or just the bonjour through airport?
I don't need to set up the mail services, correct?
    Anything else I should consider?
    Thanks

Since no one else has chimed in yet I'll pipe up and suggest you consider another configuration: connect your internet modem to a standalone firewall/router. (You'll either need one with a built in switch, or you'll need to connect a standalone switch to it.) Then connect both your server and Airport to the switch. The Airport will be set to bridge your wireless network to the wired network.
This way you focus your server resources on real server stuff, while the router takes care of grunt work like NAT and DHCP. You also gain some isolation for your server compared to having it function as your firewall and gateway.
Just an alternative to think about.

  • Harddrive question on Laptop

I have a HP Pavilion Laptop, model dv6885se, it is now going on 4 years. The dv6885se has worked flawless for the complete time, but I have noticed lately strange issues...seems to hang on occasion. I believe the hard drive is going out, but all checks says no, however I want to replace the harddrive. I purchased a SATA device and restored my harddrive (via Norton ghost 15) to the new SATA drive, however it failed to boot...BIOS or ? may be the issue, don't know. So I want to go back to a drive that will work (ATA or IDE) I believe...tried to find the harddrives on the internet but it appears no one produces the devices any longer since everyone is going to SATA drives. Can anyone help me find a new ATA IDE drive?
    This question was solved.

    +1 on Chut's response -
If it was a desktop, where you've got some room for creativity (and add-in cards), I can see where you might have been able to clone an IDE HDD to a SATA drive, then replace IDE with SATA.  But with a laptop?
You mention that it's running Vista, so this also doesn't make sense.  IDE was phased out of laptops well before Vista, if memory serves me.
I googled HP dv6885se.  This unit has two HDD bays.  I doubt that either one is IDE, but I wonder if your original problems may have something to do with any confusion over which was the boot drive?  Either physical replacement, or cloning the wrong one?
This Cnet website sez the main drive is SATA.  I wasn't finding that basic bit of info on the HP support site...

  • Adding internal HD question

My G4 came with 3 internal 40G HDs. One quit working years ago and the start up HD recently began having kernel panics--the most recent of which I can't get around.
I thought I might be able to start up using the other HD and tried loading 10.0.3 on it but it hangs up at 'Optimizing System'.
I have another HD from another G4 which has Tiger loaded, and my thought was that if I put this in my "panic'd" machine I'd be able to use Tiger for start up and then be able to access my files on the 40G HD. Is that correct/likely?
If so, here's my problem/question: The 40G HDs were all connected to one cable which came from the top of a PCI card. They have what I think are SCSI connectors? The Tiger loaded HD I'd like to add has a different connector--ATA?
Can I simply connect the newer HD like it was connected in the other G4, and if so, will I need to change it to 'slave'?
    Hope that all makes sense.
    Thanks!

    Hi, tab -
If the others are SCSI, and the 'new' one is ATA, then, yes, you can connect it like it was in the machine it is coming from. However, you would not jumper it as Slave - when an ATA bus has a single device (drive) on it, that device should be jumpered as Master. Exception - if the drive is a Western Digital brand and has a setting called "Single", use that instead of Master.
The designations Master and Slave on IDE/ATA buses confer no preference or priority, at least in Macs; they are simply addresses. If you have two drives on the ame bus, one set as Master and the other as Slave, either can be used as the primary boot drive.
Exception - if the machinne is ever set up as the Target machine in a Firewire Target Disk Mode config with another Mac, then only the drive set as Master on the ATA bus on the Target machine will appear on the Host machine's desktop.
As for whether that will allow you to access the non-available 40GB SCSI drives, that's a different thing. It would depend upon the reason those drives are presently not available. One way to check in advance is to boot to a valid install CD - if the drives appear when booted to it, then they should be available when the machine is booted to the ATA drive. If not, then probably not.

  • Adding second HDD questions

I see this in the manual--
Supports the following double hard drive
    configurations:
    ● 2 TB: (1 TB, 5400 rpm, 12.5 mm × 2)
    ● 1500 GB: (750 GB, 7200 rpm, 9.5 mm × 2)
    ● 1500 GB: (750 GB, 5400 rpm, 9.5 mm × 2)
    ● 1 TB: (500 GB, 5400 rpm, 9.5 mm × 2)
Does that mean that if I have a 750 gb 5400 rpm drive that it will only support another exact same drive? or can I add a 1tb drive @ 7200 rpm for second drive? Thanks!!
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Yes, you can add a 1Tb 7200rpm HDD in the second drive bay.

  • External Harddrive Question

    Hey guys,
I'm thinking about buying an Ipod, but seeing as I have all my music on a separate harddrive, do I need to transfer my files to my laptop's hardrive in order to get Itunes/Ipod to recognise it or can I keep it on my separate hardrive?
    thanks a lot,
    LLBDTiberio

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As long as the HD is connected, iTunes should be able to music from it. (So yes) You would just go to file-->add folder to library in iTunes, find the drive and the folder with music and import it.
Then sync your iPod. Just make sure that the HD is connected whenever you sync your iPod.

  • Compaq nc8430 - Harddrive question

Hi  I have an HP Compaq NC8430 (CNU7180M85) with a broken Harddrive.
I can't figure out which other HD I can buy an use i this computer.
The Broken HD is a Toshiba MK8034GSX ATA device.
I will like to have a bigger on - 120 GB or more and with 7200RPM in speed, if it is possible.
    On this site :
    Storage
I can read something about 100 GB 7200RPM SATA, but can I use this kind of HD ?
Then I have buy a new one, - Is the a guide how I clone the old to the new, and what I need to do it, cable maybe??
I have never trued this before..

    Hi,
Based on the following link, it's a 5400RPM, 80Gb SATA I HDD. Basically you can upgrade to a bigger (capacity) and faster HDD but this is an old machine therefore you have to update BIOS before buying new bigger and faster HDD. The following link shows its support page (including BIOS):
        http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?cc=us&prodNameId=1839197&prodSeri...
the following table shows a list of HDD's supported from day 1:
SATA I HDD is more expensive now, you can use SATA II (again, need new BIOS), it will run at SATA I speed.
    Regards.
