Adding a layer.

Forgive me, I'm a beginner, but I cannot figure out how to change the background, or even just add a layer. I've read numerous directions on both this site and many others....I'm sure the solution is an easy fix, but please help!!!!
Problem - I will have a picture, set it as my background, but then when I try to open another pic to layer, it starts a whole new job (showing only the new picture I've opened, not the previous one I set to background. So if I go back to the previous picture through the bin, it just brings me back to it and if I start a new layer, I have the problem all over again.....
I need step by step instructions on how to add a layer, please.

What do you want to do? Are you trying to copy an object from one photo to another? If so, open both photos. Make sure you are in Cascade or Tile view so that you can have two photos open at once. (Window>Images>Cascade or Tile) Select the object you want to copy with the selection tools of your choice, then press Ctrl+C (command+C on a mac) to copy it.
Click over to the background photo, then press Ctrl+V(command+V) to paste. Use the move tool to reposition or resize.
You can never see more than one image's layers palette at a time.

  • [Photoshop CC 2014] Click&hold-move-release doesn't work when adding adjustment layer from the layer panel

    When selecting a menu item I used to click the left mouse button and hold it down, move the pointer to the desired menu item and release the mouse button. Everything works fine in the mine menu, but there's a problem when adding new adjustment layer from the layer panel: when I release the button nothing happens, I have to press the button again. In previous PS version it worked fine. How can I fix this?

    I don't think that is user fixable, meaning you'll have to wait till adobe fixes it with an update.

  • Problem Adding Usable Layer Mask

    I keep trying to add a reveal-all layer mask to an image,(with another image on a layer below) but can't seem to produce a mask that I can paint on to reveal the image below.  When I click the add mask icon or go to layer add a mask, I see a layer mask icon next to the image, but it is still a rectangle with a white circle in it, not an all white framed rectangle. And painting on the original image produces no effect at all on the mask. Every video tutorial I watch, adding the mask produces an all-white mask icon in the layers panel and selecting that allows for easy painting to hide or reveal.  I just can't figure out what's going on and it's driving me nuts, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Jow333!
    I've put together this little map that might help you better understand layer masks!
    1. Add a layer mask to the layer you want to mask out and reveal the background beneath.
    2. Make sure that the Mask is selected
    3. Grab the Paint Brush tool
    4. Choose the color Black
    Then you should be able to paint right onto the layer!
    Hope this helps!

  • Adding a Layer (absolute position div) to a locked page

    Maybe I am just not understanding templates but I have a
    really simple one that has one editable region called "content". I
    want to add a absolute positioned div to the content area but DW
    tells me this would require changing code that is locked by the
    template. I thought that the editable area automatically put in by
    DW would accommodate the added code (css) that DW puts in when
    adding a template to the page.
    So what is the Editable area called "Head" used for anyways
    if not for situations like this?
    Thanks

    Here's the problem with layers in template child pages, and a
    simple
    solution.
    When you DRAG a layer onto the page in DW (this means you
    click on the layer
    icon in the Insert Toolbar and drag the layer on the page),
    DW wants to put
    the code for that layer immediately under the body tag, e.g.,
    BEFORE DRAG -
    <body...>
    <table>
    AFTER DRAG -
    <body ...>
    <div id="foo" style="position:absolute; ...>LAYER
    STUFF</div>
    <table>
    In a template child page, this region is usually not part of
    your editable
    region, and so the layer's code is rejected by the template
    engine. This is
    a bad thing.
    If instead of dragging the layer onto the page, you use
    INSERT | Layer, that
    should work provided your cursor is in an editable region,
    but since
    editable regions are usually within tables or other layers,
    you have just
    broken one of the rules listed above. This is also a bad
    thing.
    THE SOLUTION -
    Open your template page in DW, and create a special place
    where it is SAFE
    to put your layers. In code view, find this -
    </body>
    and click so that your cursor insertion point is just to the
    left of
    </body>.
    Now, use INSERT | Template Objects > Editable Region, and
    name this region
    "Layer Pad" or something like that.
    When you save your template page, all your child pages will
    now have the
    LayerPad editable region on them.
    THE BIG FINISH -
    On any child page where you need a layer, just click in this
    editable
    region, and use INSERT | Layer. Bada bing, bada boom.

  • Image not appearing after adding adjustment layer?

    My image layer isn't showing after adding an adjustment layer. I'm trying to turn a JPG picture of a nuclear explosion into a 3D/Camera effect.
    I've added one solid layer below the JPG which is just grey. The JPG is in the middle. The adjustment layer is on top, with Colorama Get phase/Add phase from alpha channel. Plus turbulnce display added.
    Whats going on? Or am I meant to do something else to the JPG first?

    I figured out what was wrong- it just didn't appear in the static preview, but it was fine when I clicked composition>Preview. Is this how it looks normally?
    I was attempting to make a weird 3D spinning pictures of nuclear explosions and bombs which panned/zoomed in and out of the images.

  • Adding a layer to a page created with a template

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!
    I created a template page. Yer boring L-shaped banner and
    left menus. Added a table in the lower right. Made it editable.
    Created many pages. Wanted one of the pages to have a
    show/hide layer, so I tried to create a layer in the page. When I
    try to insert a layer, I get an error message "Making this change
    would require chaning code that is locked by a template or a
    translator. The change will be discarded."
    Huh? If the area I'm trying to add a layer to is editable,
    then why is it forbidden by the template?
    Any enlightenment gratefully received.
    regards, David, Ottawa

    You have to click in the editable region you just inserted
    (do it in CODE
    view, but NOT between <p> and </p>), and insert
    the layer.

    For whom has already worked with JMF it sould be easy but not for my.

    After Effects will mix and match any size and pixel aspect ratio footage without problems as long as you have all footage items interpreted properly. It would help us a lot if we knew more about your composition. You should always use the presets for comp size and you should never change the PAR that a preset gives you. Distortion in non square standard comps is removed when you select PAR correction in preview.
    If you don't understand any of what I'm talking about then you must read and understand the help materials on rendering, composition setings and pixel aspect ratios. To keep your life simple always work with a square pixel preset then render using a pre-set for your desired delivery method.

  • Adding a layer with image from URL

    I am trying to write a script that adds a layer to a document, and loads an image from a url such as "http://fantasy411.mlblogs.com/ron-burgundy.jpg" .
    How can I go about doing this? Thanks in advance.

    If you have a newer version of Photoshop that supports sockets you can do something like this.
    // openImageFromWeb.jsx
    // Copyright 2006-2009

    // Photoshop for Geeks Version 3.0
    // modified by MLH

    This sample script shows how to download images from a web server using the
    Socket object.
    // Note: Socket.read() parameter & behavior
    // Socket.read() will read or time out. It may not read all data fromserver.
    // Socket.read(999999) will read 999999 bytes, or timeout, or socket will be
    // closed by the server.
    // enable double clicking from the
    // Macintosh Finder or the Windows Explorer
    #target photoshop
    // Make Photoshop the frontmost application
    app.bringToFront();

    You may have to check your firewall setting if you have one and it doesn't work with some servers. At least I can not get it to work with some.

  • How come adding a layer is not an option?

    I just started using elements today and I am trying to learn things.  On the picture I am working on when I go to adda layer or even a mask it is not allowing me to click on it.  Does anyone know why?

    Kindly review here on how yo ucan create layers in PSE- http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshopelements/using/WS287f927bd30d4b1f-f216bde12e28ad1224- 7fff.html. You can also navigate to expert mode or click Window->Layers or add layers from Layer menu from top menu bar.
    Also make sure your file is in 8 -bit. if it is 16 bit you can convert to b-bit from Image->More->8 bit and try.
    Hope it helps.
    Thanks,
    Garry

  • Adding transaction layer to Web service API

    Our company, an ISP, recently invested in the BroadHop Enterprise Service Manager platform. The platform enables us to provision Internet services via the Web. We were able to write, largely from scratch, a "registration process" by which our users subscribe to service, and then sign-in to use their Internet access.
    To create the data representing these new customers, the registration process utilizes several Web service APIs provided by BroadHop. There is one Web service to create the customer's account, another to provision his/her services, and another to facilitate the authentication process.
    What I am interested in is a means of creating a transaction for these Web service calls, with the intention of "rolling back" in the middle of the process. The Web services are consumed thusly:
    1. User enters data into session beans via a JSP-driven, multi-page, collection phase.
    2. The data stored in those beans is disseminated into a special "bean" used to represent the customer's account information. This bean object is then submitted through the Web service API to create the account.
    3. The data stored in the session is further disseminated into a product subscription object, which is then submitted through its own Web service.
    4. Upon success returned by both Web service calls (the absence of an exception), the user is taken to the sign-in page.
    If an error is thrown between steps 2 and 3, our present handler dumps all session data into an XML file and forwards the user to an error page. Although we could eventually automate the process, the data in the XML dump is then manually inserted into the system. Until this is done, however, the data stored in BroadHop is somewhat corrupt, because an account exists but is an orphan (without product subscription information).
    What I am looking for is a generic means of representing the entire transaction as it is to take place, and programmatically "resuming" or "rolling back" the transaction so that orphan data does not hang around in our system.

    My mistake...
    on [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11081_01/doc/web.21/e14979/toc.htm|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11081_01/doc/web.21/e14979/toc.htm] , the method
    void      createPropertiesFileOnVirtualMachine(java.util.Properties props, VirtualMachine vm, java.lang.String propFileName)seems to do what I need...
    Now, because my test environment only allow PV Guests, I'd like to know if that also work for HW Guests?

  • Trouble adding new Essbase dimension to physical layer

    I'm using OBIEE 10.1.3.4.2 and have created a repository where I imported an Essbase cube. That's all been fine. I recently added another layer to one of the dimensions in my cube - had Division and Market and then added System below Market. I opened the Admin tool and added the new layer/column to the physical layer. Dragged the cube to the BM&M and then the Presentation layers. When I go into Answers and begin drilling down once I select a Market the System column says organization instead of displaying valid System names.
    I also created a new repository and imported the cube and everything drills down just fine. I then compared both repositories and they look identical.
    Does anyone have a better approach to updating the physical layer when working with Essbase? I really don't want to create the whole thing from scratch as I am also including other sources.
    Thanks,
    Brad

  • Photoshop CC 14.2 leaves empty text layer

    Hey,
    with the new CC 14.2 update, everytime you click anywhere with the text tool and change your mind (like hit ESC because you missed a existing text) a empty text layer is left behind. It didn't use to be like this, empty text layers are all over my document now.
    Anyway you can avoid this?
    (I'm on a Mac using the x64 version of Photoshop CC 14.2)

    John, I know that you are upset with that change dating from CS4. But AFAIK, it is possible to write an action that goes around the problem. Very, very few users change those two settings, you can add a warning about it. You repeat it so often it sounds like a core function of Photoshop everyone uses is broken.
    In this very case, I would have liked to get a prompt similar to the one we get on a mac trying to use CMD+H that is used by the system, but is an historical shortcut in Ps.
    The only way to create actions that will always work correctly isi to take advantage of the bugs in the implementation of the options. If there is a active selection the option ADD MASKS be DEFAULT  has no effect there will always be a MASK added.  And If you record adding adjustment layer using the Layer menu and check clip the previous layer in the new adjustment layer dialog the adjust layer will always be clipped.  Knowing about the faults in the implementation of the option one can edit all old action and re-record the ADD adjustment layers steps to always have an active selection and Clip then configure the Clipped and  masked adjustment the way the want.  New Actions need to be recorded  to take advantage of the faults also.  However if Adobe fixes the faults in the implementation of the option one again actions will be broken.  The two options should be removed. Thankfully if the option are left at their default setting Photoshop works as designed.  Action will play back correctly.  Yes I repeat it often and will. Adobe should fix bugs. Adobe should also not code wrong behavior for the ESC key either.   Adobe is shooting Photoshop in the foot. Sometimes I thinf Adobe has a death wish...

  • Can't get object on own layer in timeline

    Hi, I created a website (plain html, css and javascript) and imported it to edge animate. The reason I did this is because I am new to edge animate and am trying to see the capabilities and how to include it in my work flow. So I imported the site and there are no problems. I can publish it and everything works as it did before.... but I wanted to see if I could add things into the site from edge... so I took an ellipse and added it on the stage on top of my existing site... but there is nothing in the timeline area from my site nor the new ellipse that I created on top.... how do I get the elemets to show up on layers in the timeline area?
    I was interested in adding in pictures in the timeline area to add things that are timed on the stage and also add code snippets to existing things... I can see that I can add code snippets to the elements in the elements panel by clicking on the {} brackets to the left of each element and I'm guessing this adds the code into the edge_actions.js page... so if I have an existing site that already has javascript then it publishes everything that I already have but just adds the extra code that animate generates into this file regardless of any existing javascript already on the page being called from another area... sorry, I am kind of talking/thinking out loud as I walk through figuring out how edge animate works and how to use it in my work flow... I'm interested in adding some snippets, publishing and then taking a look at the code it generates in this sheet...
    a
    anyway, back to my main confusion which is adding the ellipse to the stage and not seeing antying in the timeline section (which I though automatically added things there because I did a tutorial and in the tutorial any time you added something new to the stage it automatically added a layer to the timeline.. my timeline is blank... I image this is because I imported my existing site created with html and css but shouldn't the new thing that I add to the stage in edge animate (the ellipse) be generating a layer since it was added purely through edge animate?
    Thanks for the help,
    Kristen

    Hi Kristen,
    Do your static HTML elements appear in the timeline? And does the ellipse appear in the Elements panel?
    If it's displayed in the Elements panel, it should also be in the timeline panel - but perhaps it's in an order you didn't expect it to be in?
