Adding a lens to metadata

I frequently use an old Nikkor 500mm CAT lens with my D100 Nikon. Since the CAT 500 is completely manual - even the f stop is fixed at f/8 - all the pictures taken with this lens appear as "unknown lens" in the metadata.
Is there a way to manually add to the list the 500mm lens? It would be easy to select the pictures shot with this lens and make the assignment manually.
Thank you.

I asked 1st question because, if you were familiar with ExifTool, then I would give just commands needed. This would be the faster way to help you -but, as you've noticed, quite complicated.
2nd question was for case, your answer to 1st question would be "no" and I could maybe help you anyway -which is the case here.
First, please visit my homepage http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/ -and download ExifToolGUI (wouldn't hurt if you also read what's written there).
In short: using ExifToolGUI, you can manually define lens for all selected image files (see menu "Modify>Nikon Makernotes").
I don't have example of image file taken with such lens (to see all "unknown" data inside file). Because of that, all selected files (where Exif:Make=NIKON) will be updated -so be carefull which files you select/edit.
Even further: I don't own Nikon camera nor Nikon software -so after modifying image file with ExifToolGUI, tryout opening image with Nikon software.
For Lightroom: after modified image file is imported, all relevant lens data appear inside Lightroom as expected.
I hope that is of some help to you.
Greetings,
Bogdan
PS: It was confirmed, that ExifToolGUI runs on Vista too.

  • Will adding keywords or other metadata changes to jpeg cause file to be compressed?

    Hi, I've been searching on this for hours and not finding a definitive answer.
    Will adding/modifying keywords or metadata (ok if this is two seperate questions)
    cause a jpeg file to be compressed again while the changes are saved to disk?
    thanks for any assistance,
    William

    Thanks for the reply. I am somewhat clearer on exporting and I understand the non-destructive changes concept for LR.
    Maybe a better question would be " Does Lightroom recompress a jpeg when writing to the XMP space in the file?" please correct me if "XMP space" is not he correct term for where keywords are stored.

  • Lens Exif metadata worked for KM but no more for Sony cams

    Playing with the metadata panel in Aperture 2.1, I was surprised to see the information for the lens manufacturer/model for some shots I did with my old Konica-Minolta 5D DSLR.
    Sony took over the Konica-Minolta DSLR system about 2 years ago and as many others I have since moved to a Sony A100 body and recently to an A700 body.
    Using the very same lenses, that give me detailed lens Exif metadata with the old Konica-Minolta 5D, the metadata field is empty with Sony A100 and A700 files.
    A bit annoying, that the 4 years old Konica-Minolta 5D is supported in Aperture, while the follow up models from Sony are not.
    Hope this will be fixed in the next update.
    Peter

    Steve,
    you are probably right, that Sony is encoding the lens data in a somewhat non standard way.
    But as far as I know, in the EXIF of the Konica-Minolta files, this was done as well in a non standard way, by storing a binary lens code (at least I don't find any plaintext lens data in the image file, when I peek into it with a low level file-editor like Hexedit). As the lens information is displayed in clear text for the Konica-Minolta files within Aperture, Apple must have already integrated a lens database holding data for Konica-Minolta and Sony lenses. Interestingly even new Sony lenses like the Carl-Zeiss 16-80 lens show up, when used on an old Konica-Minolta DSLR.
    For me it looks like Sony might store the same lens-code now in a different proprietary EXIF field but Aperture is still looking into the old Konica-Minolta EXIF field, which is non existent or empty.
    So yes, Sony probably broke it, but there was enough time for Apple to fix it, especially as they have updated the lens database all the time. It is weired to add all recent Sony lenses to Aperture's lens database, but make the data only available, if you use the lenses on a 5 years old Konica-Minolta body.
    So I repeat my request for Apple to fix this in Aperture soon.

  • Lens type metadata?

    Hi. I know that when you open up a photo in Camera RAW it shows the lens type. And yet, I can't find this in the Aperture Metadata set. I would love to be able to group by lens type. Is this available somewhere and I'm missing it?
    Also, are you able to sort within albums by things like aperture or shutter speed? I think the answer is no, but I'm not sure.
    Thanks!
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    You're hardly the only person who would like access to the EXIF lens type metadata info. I currently include the camera make and model in my web galleries and would like to do the same with the lens type.
    AFAIK, the lens type is a standard EXIF field. ExifTool reads it without a hitch.
    Be sure to submit Aperture feedback on this issue.

  • Adding a Lens Profile to lightroom from Adobe lens profile creator

    Hi, I just made a lens profile from the lens profile creator for my Canon 80-200 2.8L. I then added the profile to the 1.0 folder that holds all the other lens profiles. However, lightroom does not list to profile as an option in the lens profiles. Is there something else that I need to do?

    While the more recent PDF link still works, the “Lightroom Queen” has done some recent website maintenance and the URL for default locations of files is different:
    http://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/lightroom-5-default-locations/
    Obviously the link I provided had my username “Steve” in it and you’d be substituting your username, instead.  Also the AppData folder is hidden so you have to either enable viewing hidden folders in Explorer or just type it into the Explorer address bar and hit Enter.
    The other issue you might have, which was already talked about in the preceding discussion, is that camera profiles are specific to raw or non-raw formats and if what is in your DNG is a JPG then perhaps it wouldn’t work.
    Would you mind providing the DNG and the associated camera profile via a website like dropbox.com and if you have it, the original file that was wrapped up as a DNG?

  • Adding xml data as metadata.

    Hi, I need to find a way to add a whole xml (probably hundred of lines) as metadata or as any other kind of attached data to a pdf.
    This data will be read later using Actionsript via XMP.
    Is this possible?, can I store a whole xml inside as metadata?.
    Thanks.

    I see, that arises two questions:
    1- if I want to hide the xml, or encrypt it somehow, is it possible?.
    2- how do I access the attachment using AS3?, specially inside mobile (Air app on iOS/Android)

  • "Lens Model" metadata field

    I have been using Aperture 2 version 2.14 for about a week. Yesterday I noticed that a master showed one lens model and a version of that master showed another. The correct data is associated with the master and is "EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM" but the version shows the lens as a "Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG MACRO or Tokina AT-X242AF 24-200mm F3.5-5.6" which I do not own.
    The subject photo was taken in the last few days so it's not a legacy photo from my previous software.
    Has anyone noticed this before?

    To the best of my knowledge this field is just text - Aperture does no translation of any kind on it so... This is the most funky thing that I have ever heard, it would sort of be like someone saying something like "Hey I have a Nikon D3x and a couple of my .NEF RAW files spontaneously turned into .CR2 files and they work and say that I have a Canon 40D but I don't even own a Canon, can somebody tell me why Aperture did this"
    The answer is that Aperture didn't do it.
    Bring up the RAW file that is a problem in the finder or export that master from Aperture and use another tool to look at the lens model data - it will say the same thing. If it does not say the same thing then this is the most whacky data corruption issue I have ever heard of where random data just happens to match up with actual lens manufacturers and models that actually exist.

  • How do you re-edit a lens flare once it's been added?

    I Added a lens flare but now I want to change some of the options for that particular lens flare. I clicked lens flare again but it just adds a new one. Is there an edit tool anywhere?
    (the reason why I want to edit it is because it produced an after effect where black lines are propagating from an image on my canvas.)

    From now on, always use an empty layer when applying an effect like a lens flare. That way, you can toggle the layer on/off as well as get rid of it altogether so you won't affect any other layer.

  • Metadata in Bridge CS3 lost after editing NEF file in Capture NX2

    Entered keywords and metadata in Bridge CS3, edited NEF file in Capture NX2 and then all metadata in Bridge got lost even if I did not edit any metadata in Capture.
    Original Bridge metadata are still saved in XMP file but Bridge does not show them nor can search or sort photos by them.
    Is it a Bridge bug or is it connected with any settings?
    Win XP, Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9, Capture NX2 2.2.0, Nikon D300
    Will appreciate any help, thanks a lot.

    First I renamed photos in Bridge - sidecar XMP files were created with the new filename already, added some keywords and metadata in Bridge. Edited photo in Capture but not changed the name again - the result was the Bridge does not show edited metadata and keywords anymore even all those info are still saved in sidecar XMP file. Capture apparently does not change XPM in any way.
    It looks like all the problems are connected with renaming files in Bridge before editing them in Capture as if Bridge cannot read XMP after Capture added its own info in NEF file.

  • Where's my metadata in a video?  Lightroom adjustments not transferred to CS6?

    I've shot some video clips with DSLRs, and imported into Lightroom4 along with my stills, with normal Import metadata applied.  All looks good in LR.
    Videos are generated as .MOV files.
    If I open a video in Photoshop CS6, and look at File Info, there is nothing there, not even camera info let alone the LR import preset with copyright info etc., nor the keywords and caption that I added in LR?  Metadata for videos is also  blank if I look at the file with Bridge.
    Metadata for stills (including what was added in LR) is visible in both PS File Info and in Bridge.
    Why doesn't PS or Bridge see any metadata for the video files?
    Separate problem, although perhaps related, is that I made some develop edits to the video in LR (using capture frame, develop, save as preset, then apply preset to the video file).  All looks good in LR, as well as exported files.  However, if I want to use enhanced capability in CS6, there is no "edit in" available as there is with stills.  If I open the video directly in CS6, none of the edits show; I get the as-shot file (which I can understand).  Is there any way to open the video in CS6 with LR edits applied?  At least be presented the option of doing this or opening the as-shot file?  If I open the file in Corel's Video Studio Pro, the LR adjustments are there (clipped to length and colour and tonal adjustments applied).  Why can't I do the same in CS6 if I want?
    thanks

    This is strange!
    Just did a test with a .mov and could add metadata in Bridge, once it was opened in Photoshop, Photoshop could not see the metadata.
    With the mov in Photoshop it is possible to get the metadata information via a script, so it does look as if there is a problem with Photoshop.
    If you want to test this, paste the following code into ExtendScript Toolkit and run it.
    It should dump all the metadata to the JavaScript Console in ExtendScript Toolkit.
    #target photoshop
    main();
    function main(){
    if(!documents.length) return;
    if (ExternalObject.AdobeXMPScript == undefined)  ExternalObject.AdobeXMPScript = new ExternalObject("lib:AdobeXMPScript");
    var file = activeDocument.fullName;
    var xmpf = new XMPFile( file.fsName, XMPConst.UNKNOWN, XMPConst.OPEN_FOR_READ );
    var xmp = xmpf.getXMP();
    $.writeln(xmp.dumpObject());

  • Updating/sharing keywords and metadata in Lightroom 4

    I will be using an intern to help add keywords & metadata to an extremely large group of photos in Lightroom 4.
    The intern will have their own workstation so we'll be passing files back and forth.
    I need to add their work to mine, keeping all of the keyword/metadata work tied to the virtual photos which already have some work done to them (some keywords, metatdata and photo enhancements already in place on some photos).
    step-by-step appreciated
    What is the best way to do this?
    I'm still learning LR myself.
    suggestions welcomed!
    thank you

    Lightroom is not a multi-user application, and so you can, via tedious manipulation of files, achieve the result you want, but I should also note that make one mistake, and you potentially have a real mess on your hands.
    The best solution (in my opinion) is to put the catalog file and all photos on a server that you can both access. The drawback to doing this is that only one person can be working with a specific Lightroom catalog at a time. And given my usual advice to use only one catalog, this may not meet your needs.
    If that's not a good solution, then the intern can create her own temporary catalog of the portion of the photos to be worked on today, add keywords and other metadata, and then pass the catalog file to you to merge with your main catalog using the command File->Import from another catalog.
    As another alternative, if the only task the intern will carry out is adding keywords and other metadata, there are many freeware solutions that your intern can use for this, and then when she is done in a particular folder, you can in Lightroom select all the photos in that folder, and then read the metadata from the photo files. For Windows, two such freeware programs are GeoSetter and ExifToolGUI.

  • Term Store Metadata Not Restored

    Hi Friends,
    I have recently Upgraded My SharePoint farm to 2013 Enterprise .After Upgrade I had issues starting the managed Meta Data Service Application. I was getting the error : The Managed MetaData Service or connection is unavailable.
    I Tried few tweeks as found on google with no success. I finally decided to delete the existing  Meta data Service Application and created a new one.In the DataBase field I  have added the old  Managed metadata Database and reconfigured the
    Service application. I then restarted the Service and executed the PowerShell command to set Database .
    Now my Managed Metadata Service Application is up , however none of the terms or termsets are found in the Term Store Management Tool. I am lost and frustrated , can some one please help me if there is any way to resolve this
    Regards

    Hi Aravinda_SP,
    According to your description, my understanding is that after you recreate the new meanged metadata Service Application and select the existing Database, then the metadata can't be found in the Term Store Mangement.
    I suggest you can try to create the service application via UI and test whether it works.
    Also, please take a look at the database to see whether there is data existing in the database.
    Here is a detailed article for your reference:
    Create, update, publish, or delete a managed metadata service application (SharePoint Server 2010)
