Adding a LightScribe DVD/CD Drive to MacPro Early 2009

It appears as if the 18x SuperDrive in this machine does not support LightScribe.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9192513&#9192513
I would like to add the capability to my new computer. I have found at least one external drive that will support LightScribe with the use of Toast 10. I have enough stuff on my desk already (including the LED Display because the cable is too short to put the machine under my desk.
There is a free DVD connector and you can add a second internal drive by prying off the cover on the drive.
Does anyone have a good recommendation for a second LightScribe capable drive?

My point is that it's not a universal feature on computers in general, and it's not listed in any of the Apple specs, so it seems odd to me that anybody would assume it would be a standard feature. Apple never included the disct@2 technology for labeling disks that was a proprietary feature of Yamaha drives. One could just as easily express surprise that the Mac Pro doesn't have SAS drive support, serial and parallel ports, and GPIB support, but I'd still wonder where you got the notion that they did or should.
I'm sorry if you didn't find this helpful, but I think it was a superfluous question since Lightscribe support isn't mentioned anywhere in Apple's specs.
As to Apple specs, I make no assumption that it should be a standard feature, but this is a forum on +expanding function+ of my Apple computer. Surely you do not suggest that Apple is like some other vendors who expect that users should have somebody else do their thinking?
It is a feature that I, as the owner of the computer, choose to have. Apple may license parts of it to me and it may come with license restrictions, but it is my computer and if I want to add function, I will do so.
When PARC had the motto of "don't mode me in", I resonated to it. And I like open source software and open standards, but I will not let ANY vendor including Apple "mode me in" with their specs. As for Apple, they certainly have their share of proprietary features so if I wanted to be pure as snow I would run only LINUX. Oops, there is proprietary stuff there too if you look closely enough.
Most of the multimedia disks I create have inkjet labels on them. I wanted a second drive and LightScribe was frosting on the cake; not the reason for adding a drive. The end product does not look as good as my ink jet labels, but it is less easily damaged. While I archive most things offsite with a service, I do like to have a physical copy stored offsite as well. That is where most if not all of the LightScribe disks will go.

I have an HP Pavilion a6512p PC. The OE lightscribe dvd supermulti drive cd writer has quit working. I am looking for a replacement. Any recommendations?

    Hi,
The industry has pretty much bailed out on Lightscribe technology.  There are a few listed on Amazon.  You might want to consider an external optical drive.
Here is a lightscibe optical drive.  If needs be, you can buy all 106 that are available.

  • The internal hard drive on my early 2009 24" iMac is nearly full.  How do I add an external drive so that it functions just like the internal drive on the iMac?

The internal hard drive on my early 2009 24" iMac is nearly full.  I have already worked to free as much space on the HD as possible.  How do I add an external HD and have the iMac read it as though it was part of the internal HD.  I know about external HD for additional storage and I do have an external HD, but, it is so much easier to search the drive when it is internal than having to perform a search on the internal drive and then a search on the external drives.  And, it is easier to save files to an internal drive so that I don't have to decide which external drive to use to save files.  In other words, I want to add an external HD and have it function as though I had purchased a larger internal HD.

That is simply not possible. Every drive is a separate device. It cannot be used to extend an internal drive as though you had a seamlessly larger drive.
What you can do is to create a striped RAID array using the internal drive and an external drive. However, doing this will erase the internal drive and you will lose everything on the internal drive. Furthermore, installing Lion or Mountain Lion becomes a bit of a problem because you cannot create a Recovery HD on a RAID and this tends to make the installer choke. However, you can clone an existing Lion or Mountain Lion system to the RAID and designate the RAID as a startup volume.
I would not recommend the RAID solution, personally, but there are many who do. I prefer the basic solution of spending the money on a larger internal hard drive instead of an external hard drive.
    RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs.  Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:
    RAID Tutorial;

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
Pros and cons. Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?

  • How do I properly zero out or erase the hard drives in my early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 tower?

How do I properly zero out or erase the hard drives in my early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 tower?
I assume there are already instructions on Apple.com someplace but haven't seen them yet… I have to one terabyte drives one the operating system the other is blank I want to start fresh I want to zero out both drives but I didn't want to make any mistakes
I know I can use disk utility to 0 Out Dr., #2 that means I will have to take out the operating system hard drive out of my 2008 Mac Pro and put it into my 2009 Mac Pro to use the disk utility to zero out drive one the OS drive in my 2009 Mac Pro am my correct
I just need a little bit a help I want to go slow so I don't make any mistakes with the sleds or with the erasing process which journaled to choose encrypted or not etc. etc.
Furthermore is there instructions on the site on how to change the hard drive into a different sled because the sleds and my 2009 are different than my 2008 any advice
    Thank you

I'm doing this because my friend told me that zeroing out the drive can nap bad sectors and also later for some kind of diagnostics usage of the drive or something like that he wasn't really clear
My friend was really specific he said choose the option that writes zero's once over the drive that is plenty good enough I was inclined to use the maximum seven write ...I just want to make sure the drive has no bad sectors and that's it's it's zeroed out for possible future diagnostics usage or something that he said was usable later
he also advised me to run a test on it but I don't have the software you mentioned or the software that he has… So I may have to take the drives over to his house unless you have some kind of free software that's easy to use that you could suggest that will not only zero out the drive but test the drive completely
I am completely new to Mac I'm no dummy but at the same time I'm not super technically capable I mean I can surprise myself I'm pretty good but I need a good teacher… How expensive is this lifeguard software?
    Thank you

  • Can I install SATA6 drive in my early 2009 Mac Pro

I want to add an internal hard drive to my Mac Pro. Most of what I'm finding with the speed I want are now SATA6. My manual says to use SATA III. Can I use a SATA6 drive in my early 2009 Mac Pro?

    Can I use a [6Gbits/sec SATA-3] drive in a 2009 Mac-Pro
Executive summary: Most regular commercially-available drives you buy new today will install and work fine. It IS worthwhile to pay extra for a drive with a bigger buffer, but do not pay EXTRA for SATA-3 alone, it is all specsmanship.
If you buy a weird older drive, or you have a really old Mac, it may not work properly. [WD Raptors and VelociRaptors work fine.]
    RE: SATA Bus speed:
Rotating drives available today, whatever their SATA spec, can source data off the spinning platters no faster than about 125MBytes/sec.
SATA 3 is rated at 6G bits/sec, which theoretically is about 750 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 2 is rated at 3G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 375 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 1 is rated at 1.5G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 187.5 Meg Bytes/sec
None of the SATA Busses is a bottleneck for consumer Rotating drives you can buy today. Trying to speed up the SATA Bus will not provide any real-world performance increases for Rotating Drives.
Even most common SSD drives are not bottlenecked by SATA 2.
If you put the drives on a PCIe card, they are not bottlenecked by the SATA on the card either, as it will typically be SATA 3.
But unless you have the very fastest SATA drives available, you are in no danger of having the existing main SATA 2 Bus in your Mac Pro slow you down. The card is only needed for the fastest SSD drives available today, and will not provide much current speed improvement even in that case.

  • Adding a new dvd/cdrw drive doesnt work on my SP 4600

Hi, my laptop comes with a cd-rom drive as standard and i have purchased a dvd/cdrw drive to replace it. when i fit it it seems to be powered because i can open the cd drawer and the light comes on when i turn on the computer. however it is not coming up in my computer.
i have tried several drives so the drive i am using is not faulty.
can someone please help me with this as i need the dvd function on my laptop for my job.
    thanks alot
    Tommy

    Hi,
I have been experiencing similar problems to you:(
I have conducted extensive research and have discovered the following:
There are two types of drive used on earlier Tosh laptops.
These are M/S (master slave) drives and CSEL (cable select) drives. whilst the BIOS in later Tosh machines is able to recognise either type of drive:) the earlier machines can't:(
On Genuine Toshiba drives there is a sticker that labels the ATAPI pin outs, and on this sticker pin 47 will be labelled either CSEL or M/S.
Your replacement CD-rw/DVD drive must match the drive you are replacing in this respect or it will NOT be recognised.
If your drive is not a tosh drive the chances are high that it is CSEL as most other manufacturers use this configuration.
I am told that there is an internal mod that can be done to the drive to change this parameter but I have no info on this at present.
I will update on the forum if I get any more info.
    Hope this helps you;)

  • HOW TO REPLACE HARD DRIVE WHITE MACBOOK EARLY 2009

I have a White MacBook Early 2009, I need suggestions. My Macbook is still running fine, but would like to know which Hard Drive I should purchase as replacement. Thinking of going 500GB if possible, I already downloaded the instructions. Just trying to get my ducks in order for when that time comes, hopefully not for a few more years.

For a new hard drive try Newegg.com
Regular SATA drives http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE  Use the list at the left for larger and faster drives.
    SSD drives
http://www.newegg.com/Internal-SSD/SubCategory/ID-636?Order=PRICE  Use the list at the left for larger and faster drives.
Or OWC for regular hard drives and SSDs  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
To transfer your current hard drive I like the applications Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. They make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive. http://www.bombich.com/index.html or http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=pd_cp_pc_0
If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

  • LightScribe DVD SuperMulti Drive / CD Burner

    Dear Community:
My Drive all of a sudden does not want to read CD's or CD-R's. I was uploading previously burned CD-R's into my new computer and it was working fine. I got the the 5th CD-R in the middle of the rip it just stopped. I cancelled the Rip, ejected the disc and put is back in. Now when I put a Burned CD-R, the Drive makes a funny noise.  I put in a DVD and it purrs like a kitten...It seems to read everything else.  Help! :smileysad:
    My system is Vista 64-bit.

First check the Device Manager and uninstall the dvd/crom disc drive driver and restart the computer. Then wait 2 minutes and try to do a test read or burn from a cd or dvd and if there's still issues or it's it's noisy, assuming that cables are in properly conencting to the disc drive i would say you may need to buy a new burner.
So I recommend a new Lightscribe drive from newegg.com
    They go around $20-$35.

  • What is the best optical drive for MacPro (early 2008) ?

I am having my MacPro optical drive repaired but I wish to add a new one in the second bay.
I have come to know that the Apple Store does not sell it separetely and do not know what to buy.
    Suggestions?
    Thank you.

Mac Pro 3,1 also has two extra SATA ports, easy enough to run a cable from one or both of them to the optical drive bays. But if you want to use the connectors that are already in the optical drive bays get one of these:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007589%2060000370 5&IsNodeId=1&name=IDE
Or get a SATA drive. I put a Blue Ray drive in so I can burn data to those, I have an LG
WH12LS38 that was plug and play (I think I had to order a SATA cable for it).

  • Upgrade Boot Drive on MacPro (early 2008)

The existing drive is a 500 GB drive and I want to upgrade to a new 1.5 TB drive.
How do I clone the OS and apps, data from the existing drive to a new bigger HD?

SuperDuper. The pdf guide is worth the download and is only $29 for smart backing up clones. There is also Carbon Copy Cloner from Bombich.com
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
    Amazon WD Green 1.5 $75
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ZCXJZE/
Most go with WD Black Caviar. The 2TB is one of the fastest drives outside SSD
    http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Caviar-Desktop-WD2001FASS/dp/B002MD05SA/
I'd rather see 3 WD Black smaller models unless for backup and TimeMachine, not for system which I like to see small lean and OS and applications and keep everything else on other drives like data, media and library files. And separate drive for scratch also.

  • Availability of Wi-Fi card for Nehalem MacPro (early 2009)

If I buy a new Nehalem MacPro from somewhere other than Apple, it does not come with a wi-fi card. So far, Apple does not seem to be selling the card as a standalone, only when purchased as an add-on to the computer.
Is this card the same as the card for the previous MacPro, or is it a brand new card? If brand new, is it available anywhere, or does anybody know when it will be? Alternatively, what is the best wireless N solution for attaching to a USB port?

Why would I not buy straight from Apple?
1 - I live in California. A purchase straight from Apple requires immediate sales tax, adding over $250 to the cost.
2 - MacConnection already offers the basic Nehalem MacPro for $110 less than Apple. No stock yet, but there will be soon.
3 - If I use my Amazon business VISA card at Amazon, I am in a 90 day promotion period during which I get 6 Amazon points per dollar spent, which is equivalent to a 6% rebate, saving another $200. I can use the same card at Apple, but then only get 3 points per dollar, cutting the rebate in half.
4 - Aside from that total savings of about $460, if I ordered from Apple, I would want to change the memory configuration from 6 x 1 GB to 6 x 2 GB. But doing that changes shipping time from 24 hrs to 2-3 weeks. If I have to wait that long, I might as well wait to see if I can get the wireless card elsewhere.

  • Is there a diagram for putting in a new hard drive in my early 2009 model imac 24 inch
