Adding a main folder in LR.

Win XP sp2.
I have images in subfolders in the following location
F:/my photos/ 2006- July- Dec/ "30 sub directory containing image files "
In LR I have imported 11 of these 30 sub directories and they are listed individually in the Library folder structure. How do I create a folder 2000- July- Dec so that I can then place the sub folders into that new folder? All I have been able to find is how to insert a sub folder into an existing one.

This is a very common problem, where you end up with multiple individual folders that actually should be consolidated under a master folder.
The problem is that you can't import ZERO photos, and if there is nothing to import, LR just halts the process and leaves your folder tree just as before.
The easiest way that I have found to solve this problem is to put a 'dummy' photo in the master folder, and import the dummy picture. It will then ask you what sub-folders to import. Checkmark none of the folders (just import that one dummy picture) and the folders will fall into place during the import. You can then just delete the dummy photo from the LR catalog.

  • I have added the Documents folder to the Dock, however when I save a document it doesn't appear in the Documents folder on the Dock, only the Documents folder in the Finder.  Is this a quirk, so am I doing something wrong?

I like having my Documents folder on the Dock so I added the Documents folder from the Finder to the Dock.  When I save a document to the Documents folder, the saved document appears in the Documents folder from the Finder and not in the Documents folder on the Dock.  Why is this happening?  And how can I change this?

Oooh. I never new that was there.

  • I want to create a new folder on my external hard drive for photos.  Even though I added the new folder button to the tool bar it is not highlighted so I cannot click on it to create a new folder on this drive.

I have an external hard drive that I would like to pre-make a new folder before I import photos into it.  Even though I added the new folder app to by toolbar, it is not highlighted and I cannot use it.  It will only let me create new folders if I upload to iPhoto.  That is not where I want to store everything.  So I need to figure out how to turn on or activate New Folder on my toolbar for all possible downloading options.

If it's a drive that you've previously used with a PC, just double-check the format - click the drive once on the desktop to highlight it, and click cmd-i (the command key and the i key together) to see the Info window. That will tell you, under Format, how it's formatted.
If it's "NTFS", that's the current Windows format. You can read but not write to it with a Mac. If you want full read/write access, you should look into Paragon NTFS, which allows you to do both. Note that some features of te Mac (Time Machine, for example) will only work with Mac-formatted drives.

In VIEWING (to print) my iTunes music (in finder), how can i view subfolders without clicking on the  triangle of each main folder?
I am trying to print a list of all my music. For example, main folder is BEATLES.  Subfolders are Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, etc...
and I want to view and print all the subfolders. This is a recovery project after my hard drive failed. I know this is truly a "finder" question and will double post there.

  • Error when creating a bookmark in a new folder - defaults to main folder for that group

When I want to create a new bookmark sub-folder (for example, I have a "Photography" folder and I want to save a URL to a new folder under that category called "Cameras"), I click the "New Folder" button, and it somehow changes the name of main folder ("Photography") to the highlighted "New Folder". However, when I go to my bookmarks afterwards, the "Photography" folder is there and there is a new folder called "New Folder". It seems to be corrupted or something, but I am not sure. It has been doing this for the last few versions. Now, I am on version 11.0.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Since this doesn't happen with a new profile, I think your best solution is going to be to use a new profile and migrate you data. The article, [[Recovering important data from an old profile]] has instructions for doing this.
An easier way to get this done is to use a new feature coming to Firefox 13. You can get access to it by downloading the Aurora build from here - http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/aurora/
Once you install Aurora, type about:support in the location bar. This will bring up the special troubleshooting information page. In the upper right hand side there is a button to "Reset Firefox". Clicking this will create a new profile for you and migrate over your bookmarks, passwords, history for you automatically. I've used it and works well. After completing that, you can continue to use Aurora if you want or you can uninstall it and go back to the regular version of Firefox.

  • Synronizing folder very slow in main folder

I am experiencing that sometimes when I try to syncronize my main folder (that contains 12000 photos) it's either very slow and it's only importing half the pictures. If I syncronize the subfolder where the new picture are, they import in a flash. Why is that? What can I do?
I work on a MacBook Pro, but have recently shiftet from a PC and I'm using the same catalouge. 99 procent of the photos are jpg, their are some Psd files and some eps. I recently had problems importing two psd files. I let it sync for a few hours but the photos never showed.
    Anybody who can help?

I have the same issue. I use my Retina primarily for photography. Browsing photos takes a long time compare to my pc. The pc from 2006 is even faster opening the same folders with pictures from external harddrive. There should be users with same issue.
Would like to see a solution. Cant believe a 2006 quad core 4gb can out perform a 2.4 i7 16gb......

  • Move files out of subfolder into main folder

I have a bunch of files in subfolders :
    mainfolder A / subfolder 1 / file a
    mainfolder A / subfolder 1 / file b
    mainfolder A / subfolder 1 / file c
    mainfolder A / subfolder 2 / file d
    mainfolder A / subfolder 2 / file e
    mainfolder A / subfolder 2 / file f
    mainfolder A / subfolder 3 / file g
    mainfolder A / subfolder 3 / file h
is there a script or automator thingie that will automatically move them all into the main folder? Like as follows :
    mainfolder A / file a
    mainfolder A / file b
    mainfolder A / file c
    mainfolder A / file d
    mainfolder A / file e
    etc?
have used scripts (especially in iTunes) but never the automator - would appreciate any help!
    w

    Well, it's relatively easy manually.
Open a separate Finder window for mainfolder A by COMMAND-clicking on the folder. Move this folder to the right of the other Finder window. Now navigate to subfolder 1 in the left Finder window and press COMMAND-A to select all the files in that subfolder. Drag the selected files to the right Finder window. This moves them all where you want them. Now repeat this for the files in the other subfolders. When you finish all the files will have been moved to mainfolder A.
I know this isn't the most elegant solution, but it may take a lot less time then it would take you to write a script or an automator action. Unless, of course, you want the programming experience.

  • Could I please have feedback on adding Aperture, mainly for organization and storage.

I have Iphoto and Adobe Photoshop already.  In my iPhoto I have 30K photos.  Could I please have feedback on adding Aperture, mainly for organization and storage.

You wouldn't be adding it, you'd be replacing iPhoto with it.
It does all the jobs that iPhoto does, and then some. You'll also find yourself using Photoshop less.

  • Find date/time when item added item in folder?

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if there was any Automator Action out there that allows you filter finder items by date "added" to a folder.
Please don't confuse with the date of the actual item. I am talking about if there is anyway to be able to detect and find when an item was added into a folder.
Thanks. I hope there is something out there. If not then I hope that there is some sort of applescript that can do this.
    Please help.
    Phil

I'm not aware of an Automator action, but starting in OS X 10.7 Lion a Spotlight metadata attribute named kMDItemDateAdded was added that contains the ISO date/time an item was added.  If the item has been moved recently enough to have the attribute (and assuming that Spotlight is indexing the containing folder), there are a couple of utilities you could use.
The mdfind shell utility won't be quite like filtering, but by limiting the find search to a particular folder and using the appropriate query, you can get a list of items - for example, the following will list items added to the Downloads folder in the last week:
do shell script "mdfind -onlyin ~/Downloads 'kMDItemDateAdded >= $time.today(-7)' "
The mdls shell utility can be used if you are just wanting to get the value of a particular metadata attribute from an item, for example:
set theFile to quoted form of POSIX path of (choose file)
do shell script "mdls -name kMDItemDateAdded -raw " & theFile

  • Multiple libraries into "one main folder" ?

Do second libraries need to be maintained separately? I'm guessing there's only one set of Lightroom preferences that applies to all libraries, but what about data base back ups? Do they have to be set up separately in each library?
Also, can 2 different libraries both go into one main folder?
    Thanks for your help,
    Tim

You can have mixed sources for Libraries and you can name your Libraries what you want, just so you keep the extension, .lrdb, and yws they can coexist in the same folder.

  • Script to send email with the filename of the file just added to a folder?

    Hi,
I have an AppleScript set into an Automator workflow which will send me an email when a file is added to a folder.
What I would like to have happen though is have the email include the file name of the file that is added to the folder
    tell application "Mail"
        set theNewMessage to make new outgoing message with properties {subject:"New File added", content:"File", visible:true}
        tell theNewMessage
            make new to recipient at end of to recipients with properties {address:"[email protected]"}
            send
        end tell
    end tell
I'm new at the whole AppleScript thing, but I'm getting how powerful it can be.
    Thanks for any help.

    Maybe something along these lines...

*set theSubject to text returned of (display dialog "Enter subject here " default answer "")*
*set theTarget to text returned of (display dialog "Enter recipient's email address here " default answer "")*
