Adding a msata ssd to l430 as boot drive

Is it possible to clone my standard 320 GB HD to a msata ssd and put it in the pci slot on my Lenovo L430 and use that as the boot drive and use the 320 gb HD for storage?

Hi,
As Hemanth points out, the stock mSATA SSD as shipped (if your L has one) is too small to use as a boot drive.  The stock SSD is intended as a fast cache for the HDD.
However, it should be possible to install a larger capacity mSATA drive and clone to that - or fresh install via recovery media or MS media.  This is commonly done with Thinkpads - mine included.
The mSATA slot is dual-purpose:   WWAN or SSD.  If you have a WWAN card installed the slot won't be available for an SSD.
Note that cloning will probably "kill" the local recovery partition.  It will still be there but not usable for local recovery - so it is essentially wasted space.

  • Adding an mSATA SSD to an X230

I gather in some parts of the world you can get an X230 with an HDD and an SSD (in place of the WWAN adapter) from the factory, but not in the US.  So, I'm thinking of doing it myself.  My plan would be to add the SSD before installing any of my own s/w, then move the OS from the HDD to the SSD with something like this (http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-OS-to-SSD/).  Set the HDD to unbootable in the BIOS and I'm pretty much done.  I'd be interested in hearing comments from those who've done this, or who might have some advice even if they haven't.  Thanks.

    Involute,
you can clone HDD on msata SSD using some sw like Acronis or Intel (free of charge tool if you use msata SSD from Intel). Install msata SSD, install smth cloning sw on HDD and do it. This solution is better if you have fully installed and tuned system.
If you want to get the system like from the factory just make a Factory_Recovery media, remove HDD, insert msata SSD and launch new image installation. Then insert HDD.
In both case you'll get all 3 partitions on both drives. Then repartition them for youself. You can even delete Lenovo_Recovery partition on system (msata SSD) drive as you have recovery media.
Do not forget to change the boot priority within BIOS setup.
Note, for installation R&R on 2nd drive with installed on another (HDD) drive it'd be better to remove HDD from the bay temporary. After installation you'll get a system with working blue button.

  • X230 / mSATA SSD - Will not allow boot (unauthorized network card)

this is killing me.  I just got a crucial msata ssd.  i went to install and the thinkpad whitelist fcc crap is giving me trouble.  the system thinks it a network card and is therefore stopping the boot.  i see others have installed msata on x230 and I have done this on other models as well.
does anyone know a way around this that doesn't envolve changing the bios to a custom bios hack?

    Hello,
I don't have an X230 myself, but have you tried using a different MiniPCIe slot?  On my X220, only one of the MiniPCIe slots is mSATA compatible.  Perhaps it is the same way with the X230.

  • SSD for system directory (boot drive)?

I'm curious why anyone would recommend an ssd drive for the system directory (boot drive). From what I read about ssd's, if there is a lot of (re)writing to the drive, the performance will degrade with time due to the way ssd's (re)allocate free space. Given that the paging space (backing store) would be on that drive (unless you go out of your way to place it elsewhere) and also the system caches, wouldn't you expect the performance to degrade with time? Yes, you can stick a bunch of memory on the machine and that may reduce paging. But still, over time, I would still expect the performance to still degrade.
So explain to me what's the _long term_ benefit of a ssd drive for your boot device?

Most people when it comes to storage know about StorageReview.
    That's you're assumption.
I've only started researching this question since last week. There's nothing at that site that specifically answers it so I wouldn't be attracted there.
And because I just posted on Thursday a couple long replies on
SSD in another thread with a link, that I would hope was picked
    up and read by others
A search of "storagereview" yields a hit on one of your posts On Sept 4 ("Are SSD harddrives faster ?"), four days before I even joined these forums! Searches here didn't yield anything and I wasn't about to wade through 200 pages of titles if searches didn't yield anything. And I don't know you from Adam so there would be no reason to look for your posts.

  • SSD RAID0 as a boot drive on a Mac Pro

    I'm buying a Mac Pro early 2008
I'm using Final Cut Pro and After Effects.
    Option 1: (5) drives
    1. OSX boot drive 80GB SSD (under the DVD drive)
    2. 32GB SSD RAID0 (scratch/render drive) bay 1
    3. 32GB SSD RAID0 (scratch/render drive) bay 2
    4. 1TB RAID1 (backup) bay 3
    5. 1TB RAID1 (backup) bay 4
    or
    Option 2: (4) drives
    1. OSX boot drive 64GB SSD RAID0 (OS/scratch/render drive) bay 1
    3. OSX boot drive 64GB SSD RAID0 (OS/scratch/render drive) bay 2
    4. 1TB RAID1 (backup) bay 3
    5. 1TB RAID1 (backup) bay 4
I've always had my OS on a separate drive than my scratch/storage disks. but I'm wondering if it's okay to RAID0 the OS and scratch/render drives together.

Move the mirror RAID to external backup.
Keep the OS and scratch volumes separate; as I said, keep to what you use to do, keep the OS separate. Yes, you should RAID both, but not together. No to option #2.
If you work with 1-2GB files, 16GB RAM is essential (maybe more). I assume you bought 2008 to save a little over 2008 in part to have 8 DIMM slots.

  • How to add mSata SSD as HDD cache (for Windows 8)?

    Hi,
I have T430 with HDD and Windows 8, 64.  I have installed a new 32 GB mSata SSD, but I cannot figure out a way to set it up as a cache.
I am aware of the solution where ExpressCache needs to be installed  but I have Windows 8 and the below link does not apply:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404
I have also tried installing Interl Rapid Storage software.  It does show my SSD but there is no option to "Accelerate".  Googling points out that in BIOS I need to change SATA mode to RAID, but I only have Compatible and AHCI options there.  Installing latest BIOS and lates Intel Rapid Storage drivers did not help.
Any other options I might be missing?  Looks like it is either Lenovo publishes ExpressCache for Win 8 or adds IRS / RAID support in BIOS.
    --Pavel
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Ok, I have figured it out.  Turns out that ExpressCache link for Windows 7 works for Windows 8 as well.  After installing it I had to remove the volume from the SSD using disk manager and then run from the admin command prompt (can get there using Win+X key combo):
    eccmd -partition
This command automatically found my SSD (again trick here is to make sure it is wiped clean first - not formatted and not partitioned).
Now I can see the status and effectiveness of caching via:
    eccmd -info
Impressive - about 60% of read operations right now are from SSD.  System is way more responsive and boots faster.  You can see even that HDD lamp lights up less frequently.  I definitely recommend adding an msata SSD if you have a HDD T430!
PS. ExpressCache.exe which I assume is GUI does not start though, I had to use the command line.

  • Z87 MPower - msata as OS boot drive?

Hi, I am wondering if it is possible to use an ssd in the onboard msata port as the OS/boot drive. The manual doesn't seem to specify that the msata port is for caching drives only, so I figured it would not have any restrictions since it shares SATA5 port.
However, when I try to install the OS to the msata drive with no other drives connected, I receive an error saying that there is no drive eligible for install. If I plug in a second drive and set the msata drive as drive 0, the system reserved partition will install to the msata drive, but the actual windows files will install to the second SATA drive.

If this is win 8, you may need to make sure you have the latest UEFI/ GOP vbios for each card.
How would Windows 8 influence not even being able to get to the BIOS out of the box before any OS is installed? The OS doesn't come into play until after POST, and I don't get to see that :(
The Win 8 settings are disabled in the BIOS, which is set to UEFI+Legacy.
The R9 cards are very new and most of them have not had any BIOS updates yet.
    Quote
Did you try a single card in each slot to make sure each slot was working fine?
Yes, I can run a single card in each x16 slot. It just doesn't give me any video until Windows loads the driver.
    Quote
Cross flashing can be quite dangerous, I would suggest getting the latest GOP vbios for eachs specific card.
The 290s I have are all reference models. Out of the same factory. Any brand BIOS works on any of them. I flashed the ASUS PT1 BIOS to the one I use, it's a widely used BIOS which works well.
    Quote
Have you tried clearing the cmos after installing the cards as you wish and making sure all win 8 options were disabled?
Yes, clearing the CMOS unfortunately changes nothing with regards to actually seeing the POST screen. It simply does not happen with ANY graphics card plugged in. Only via onboard graphics can I access the BIOS, and I only get picture on the onboard graphics if I remove the GPU from the board. When I set up the BIOS via onboard graphics, save settings, and reboot with a GPU on the board it does not get past POST and resets itself continuously until I clear the CMOS.

  • How to upgrade to m.2 ssd as boot drive in Ideapad U430 touch?

I would like to install a 128 gb m.2 SSD (NGFF) as the boot drive for this system while leaving the 500 gb hybrid drive for file storage and applications.  Can you recommend a step-by-step process to accomplish this?  I haven't seen other forum posts where the m.2 drive would be the boot drive.  The O/S is Win 8.1 and the only system backup I have made to this point is on the main drive. (Specific model number is 20270; part number 59399722 if that helps!)  Any help or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

    Is this a good idea?

    How to do this step-by-step?

  • GT60 2OD-026US mSATA SSD question. Please help.

I'm getting the GT60 2OD-026US.  Currently, it has a 256GB Samsung PM841 mSATA SSD Drive in slot 1 with my OS installed on it. The other two slots are currently empty.   The second HD has a 750GB 7200RPM Serial-ATA II installed.
My question.  I would really like to install one more mSATA SSD in slot 2 for now, but also slot 3 down the road.  I asked the tech where I'm getting it if I could add an Intel 525 256GB in slot 2 and he told me no.  He said I needed the same brand and size mSATA installed in slot 2 and the same for slot 3 if I eventually wanted one there too. He wouldn't explain why this would be the case, he just told me that was the way it was. Is this true?  Can I only get fill up the other slots with the same brand and size mSATA SSDs?
If it is not true, what mSATA's seem to be the most compatible with the GT60 2OK-026US?  I would really like to expand my SSD options.
Any help, information and/or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

  • Adding mSATA to W530 as boot drive

I saw somewhere that you could add an mSATA drive to the W530.  But can you then make that your boot drive?  I want to add an SSD but am deciding either an MSATA drive or a regular SSD.  I'd like to keep my old hard drive as abackup (probably even leave it in the system if I can get an mSATA to boot the OS from itself).
Any ideas or instructions on how to get this to work?  I'm thinking I need at least a 500 GB drive (i tend to run a lot of VMs on my laptop).

It's easy peasy.  Just be aware that the msata slot is only sata II so it's limited at 3Gb/s.  The hardest part is selecting the best msata, but I'll even do that for you...get the Plextor M5M or the Samsung EVO if you need 1000 GB of space.

  • S430 mSATA SSD and Dual Boot

Yesterday my Lenovo Thinkpad S430 arrived, I have some questions concerning dual booting Linux and Win 8 from the mSATA. I have a Crucial m4 128Gb with the current firmware 07MH which I want to want to install instead of the 16Gb mSATA SSD which is currently used for caching.
For that I want to do a clean Win 8 install (I got the ISO and a valid serial) and presumably an current Ubuntu. Unfortunately I have no experience with UEFI and Secure Boot and that stuff. Is there anything I need to do, are there any problems with what I want to do?
The current UEFI BIOS on my S430 is the GAET71WW (2.07), should I upgrade it to the current 2.54?
Is there anything else I should know?
    Regards and thank you,
    meruah

If I'm reading Hemanth Kumar's post correctly, 16GB is the largest mSATA drive provided by and supported by Lenovo for use as a cache.
I'd expect that you can use most any capacity mSATA drive in that slot for a primary OS drive.  It is frequently done with Lenovo laptops to install a large mSATA SSD - as I did in my T420, 256GB - and keep the HDD as a data drive.
That said, I don't have specific experience with your machine.  It would be great if someone with specific experience would join the conversation.  Otherwise, I can only say it's probably OK.

  • Boot from mSATA SSD in Probook 650

Hi guys and girls, Is it possible to add an mSATA (NGFF) SSD in the Hp Probook 650 G1 (F1N78EA) and boot from it? The technical manual does desribe that there is a slot for a mSATA flash cache module for Intel SRT, and that mSATA SSD's are expected later. So I assume it should work? From the specsheet: "32 GB M.2 (NGFF)Optional 32 GB mSATA flash cache module* support for Intel Smart Response Technology. (Available only with standard non-SEDhard drive.)*mSATA SSD is planned to be available in August 2013." Thanks a lot.

I had a breakthrough. And I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier - or that HP support didn't just suggest it right away. It's a really simple solution. You can't boot from a M.2 device directly. But you can boot the M.2 windows installation from the sata connected device (hdd/ssd). So if you just install windows on the sata device first, you can utilize the 100mb system partition for all other windows versions, including any on the M.2 device. No diskpart needed (assuming you have already initialized your M.2 ssd so it can be detected in windows)No BCDboot commands needed. Tested with windows 7 sp1 x64 professional.Bios settings & my notes at the buttom.Bios settings may need to be tweaked for win8/10. Step 1: Install windows on your sata attached device (hdd/ssd).Step 2: Boot into the newly installed windows*Step 2.2: Install windows from inside your first windows installation on your M.2 device.Step 3: Reboot, boot using the OS manager (which will appear in the boot order when more than 1 OS is detected). It should be top boot priority automatically.Step 3.2: Select the correct windows installation when prompted, it should be the top one.Step 4: Delete the windows installation from the boot list using cmd->msconfig. *If you want to avoid having the optical drive taking up the D: drive-letter, change it before installing windows to the M.2 device. This is purely optional, and only meant for the drive-letter obsessive people, such as myself. I have yet to find a way to end up having the M.2 windows installation as the C: drive.Right now my M.2 SSD is the D: drive, and the HDD (containing the first windows installation) is the C: drive.  Bios settings & notes:Fast boot: enabledBoot mode: UEFI hybridSata device mode: ACHI For some reason 'startup menu delay' must not be set at 0, I have mine set at 5 seconds. At 0 seconds the system will boot 'too fast' and the M.2 device will appearently not have been switched on in time for windows booting. You will get a device-undetected error. The partition style of the sata device and the M.2 device must be the same. Either both must be MBR, or both must be GPT.I tested both MBR and GPT, they both work.

  • Booting from msata ssd

In my Y500, I installed a samsumg 850 evo 250 GB msata ssd.I made it a GPT drive and cloned all bootsectors and the whole system from my HDD. So the Msata is now identical to the HDD (minus de D-partition for data.) But I can't boot from it. In the bios the windows-bootmanager on the ssd is recognized, but it does not function. I thought I have to rename the OS partity on the ssd  to C, but I can't rename it with any of my partition-managers (on Bootable cd's). Microsoft says that windows change the letter of the os partition to C by itself. ??I tried removing the HDD to force a boot on the ssd, then he want to "recover", but there is no recovery and I dont want to make a clean-install of  the windows 8 version of 3 years ago and reinstall all the software. I see on the forum that others got it working, but maybe not by clooning ??How to get my Y500 booting from the sdd, with the clooned OS and all software ??

Thanks for replying. I gave changing the bootconfiguration an other try. although I had done it already. Results: If I use only "legacy" the bios passes both my ssd-drive and my hdd-drive and goes to network-boot (without result of course). If I choose Efi first, and put the windowsbootmanager on SSD on top, he skips it an goes to bootmanager on the HDD.The question still is: How to adapt the windows bootmanager on the ssd to make that it boots the windowspartition on the SSD ??

    Hello,
I just bought a new hp envy, i want to put a msata ssd drive and use as primary drive and install windows there.
i red that some people are having problems with selecting msata ssd as primary in similar models, and its not possible to set msata as primary in boot device priority.
Is it possible to do this in this model?  Or is it possible with a simple process?
And by the way, am i violating warranty by installing a msata ssd myself?

    @3uric0 ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  You would have to check the bios to see if this was possible.
Check the advanced boot settings if they are listed.  Depending on the model of notebook some BIOS options are not available.

  • X131e 33722FU Boot from msata ssd not working

    x131e 33722FU
I installed a crucial 128gb msata ssd in the full length mpcie/msata slot.  In the documentation http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?&DocID=PD024828 it shows that the wwan port can be used for ssd.  I can't get the bios to boot from the ssd.  When I am in Windows I see the drive is recognized but I can't get it to boot.  My goal is to remove the factory HDD and just boot from the SSD.
Any Idea how to get this to work?

    Hello,
I believe the ThinkPad X131e (MT: 3372-2FU) contains an AMD E2-1800 CPU and associated chipset.
As far as I know, mSATA functionality is currently only available on commecial systems equipped with Intel chipsets.  I did find reference to mSATA support in a few embedded systems with AMD G-series CPUs and A55E chipset used for things like industrial control systems, but it given the limited mention, it sounds like that it has not been widely adopted, even on systems that use AMD's A55E chipset.
