Adding a new 2Tb Time Capsule to a home network

Greetings. I have a 2-story home with a basement. Currently, the wireless network is based on a 2003 A1034 Airport extreme, with an AExpress on one floor, and an older airport in the basement. I've now purchases a 2Tb Time Capsule with 802.11n. Is there any benefit to starting over with the Time Capsule as the master router, or can I just add it into the current network and have it backup the computers as it is? It took me a long time to figure out the way to link the Airports, and I'm sort of afraid to start over if there's no speed benefit. We have the high-speed ATT UVerse internet. I hope my question makes sense, and I'm grateful for any input.
Rory Cooney

You should put the TC in as the main router.. but only do this if you can still access it via gigabit ethernet or N wireless.. for backups.. if you do backups via G wireless it will take forever.. G wireless is fine for the internet.. but lousy for local lan traffic.

  • Can't connect 2TB Time Capsule to my home network

I can't seem to get my new 2TB Time Capsule to show up in Airport Utility on my MacBook Pro. I started out trying to connect wirelessly, then with an Ethernet cable directly between the Time Capsule and my MacBook. Still, the new device does not appear in Airport Utility.
Airport Utility sees a device called "Jeff's iTunes Time Capsule," which I presume refers to my neighbor Jeff's equipment. But then it occurred to me that, if I'm not connected to a wireless network, how can my MacBook "see" my neighbor's stuff? The package did not appear to have been opened, although the power and Ethernet cables were unwrapped when I first took the device out of the box. The status light keeps flashing amber, by the way.
I clicked on this "Jeff's iTunes Time Capsule" just to see what would happen. I was prompted for a password, which of course I don't have. Any thoughts?

Thanks, James. Turns out, I was right: Someone (Jeff?) had bought this machine, installed it, and returned it to the store. It was my dumb luck to choose this item from the many others sitting on the store shelf. Anyway, I called Apple Support. A tech named Joy walked me through a factory reset to get rid of the mysterious Jeff. Then I saw the dreaded message, "Hard drive needs repair." Apple then sent me a new TC. They shipped it out late Friday, and it arrived Monday! (I'm impressed!) I installed it and returned the defective machine. Now, my network works better than ever, and I really like my Time Machine. I give a special two thumbs up to Apple support and Joy!

  • New 2TB Time Capsule: solid amber light, but TC working well...what's wrong?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me...thanks in advance for reading through this question!
    I have a brand new 2TB Time Capsule, using it with the AT&T U-verse modem/router 3801 HGV.
After much consternation, I finally got the TC set up in bridge mode with the U-verse router.
The TV, phone, and internet are all working well through AT&T...and my wireless internet
connection through the TC is working great as well.  Also, the TC is performing the first
back up of my MacBook Pro hard drive.  Everything seems to be working great, I think.
However, I have some questions that I feel need to be addressed:
1- The light on the TC is solid AMBER, not green.  When I check the connections in the Airport
Utility, all indicator lights on my screen are green, and the "dot" beside the TC icon is green.
Solid amber indicates that the "Time Capsule is completing its start-up sequence".  I would expect
the start-up sequence to be completed long ago and the light to be green...and I can't find anything
    wrong.
Any ideas as to why the light on the TC could be solid amber??
2- What should I do to get the light to be green??
3- I have no idea of the speed of the back-up, and what it should be.  I have about 190GB of data
to back up.  I totally understand that it takes many hourse for the first back-up.  It looks like the
speed I'm seeing is changing frequently, and it's backed up about 3.5GB in about 20 minutes or so.
Is that a fairly "normal" speed??  I just want to make sure my configuration is good.
4- I'd like to set up a "guest" wireless network with an easier password...I had done it earlier when
the connections were not working and perhaps I accidentally removed it when updating to "bridge"
mode.  To set up a new network, do I just write over the info in the fields when I get to "Wireless"
tab in the Airport Utility??  The info from my "home" network populates those fields now, and I
just don't want to risk overwriting the info and losing that network.
Does the TC "add" a new wireless network when I add new data in those fields...and SAVE the
original "home" network I created??  Just making sure!
    Thanks to those who reply!
    Chris

That is weird.. most TC I look at solid AMBER means the hard disk is dead. Not sure but since it is working it is no biggie.. there is some control over how the led functions.. but I doubt you can set the color different.
In other words.. not a clue.. if the TC is new take it to the genius and show them.. that is not the way it is supposed to work.

Over wireless expect slow.. you did not state wireless or wired.. but those look like reasonable wireless speed. your files will load at different speed.. small files are slow.. larger files much faster.. it takes time to write the tables for many smaller files.
We always recommend first backup over ethernet.. even if the TC is pulled out of the network.

Guest network is removed as an option in bridge mode.. just use the uverse modem wireless for guest.

  • Will the new 2TB time capsule run hot like the old one?

Could someone please tell me if the new 2TB time capsule that just came out will run hot like the old version? I have been thinking about getting the time capsule for quite some time, but I am concerning that it will get overheated to the point that all the data stored on it would be lost. I have seen several posts over the internet mentioning this problem. Please help. Thank you so much.

I just replaced my old TC with the new one. It took all night to transfer 149gb from my Imac to the new drive by wireless N. I took the old one to work and hooked it up in my office for a back up of a Mac Mini. At home we had 3 Mac's attached to the TC and it was always hot.I even found some sockets from an old socket set to raise it up so air could get under it to help cool it down a little. The new one is just warm with the same computers hooked up. The old one at work is also only warm to the touch with the one Mac hooked to it. I'm very happy with the new one and love the dual band.

  • Moved my iTunes library to my new 2TB time capsule, now iTunes can't find the Time Capsule.

Had my iTunes library on my older 1TB Time Capsule. Just bought a 2TB Time Capsule. Moved all the music from the old to the new. But, iTunes tells me now it can't find the server. I've checked the location of the library on the iTunes preferences, to point iTunes to my server. I keep getting an error message that iTunes can't find my server. I've already added the folder on the server to my login preferences, like it was with the older Time Capsule.
I did everything exactly as before but now iTunes can't find my Time Capsule.
Should I have just pointed the login to the server and not the exact folder? I've been working on the solution for an hour now.. Please, can someone here help me?

  • Multiple Time Capsules on Wireless Home Network?

I have a relatively new MacBook Pro and Time Capsule. Everyone was actually working well until my husband got the same type of computer and logged into our wireless network. Somehow, until he turned his computer off, I was unable to back up to my Time Capsule. All of my sharing is off. This is before he even connected his own Time Capsule to the home wireless network. The folks in the Apple store suggested that two Time Capsules could be on the same network with no problem. Any ideas?

Don't want to just connect an external drive into the USB port of the TC (on the belief that transfer speed will be slow).
Are you sure that it will be slower? If you are using a wireless network to connect your machines to the Time Capsule, your bottleneck will be the wireless network, not the fact that the HDD will be connected by USB. Granted the external HDD may be slower than TC's internal HDD. I feel an additional HDD would be the most bang for your buck.

  • I just bought a new 2TB time capsule and I am so frustrated that I cant get any help!!!!!

Yesterday, I bought a new (4th gen) 2TB TC to replace by mid 2007 500gb TC. I did this simple to upgrade the wirelass capability to the very latest as the wifi in our home is intermittent. I also bought a Zepplin recently so that i could use Airplay to stream music but the wifi is also intermittent, it works when it wants to and not usually when when i want it too!! Hence the purchase of a new TC for £249.
The instructions on the Apple site and in the instruction book all say it is so easy to set up the TC and the wireless network.
So here I am , 24 hours later and frustrated at having spent hours and hours and gotten no-where. Ive logged calls with Apple Support and even though I am sat by the phone they keep emailing me saying they've tried to reach me and if I still need help then to rearrange a call!! But I'm here!!!
Here's my problem (apart from the desire to take the TC back and get a refund)...
    - when I open Airport Utility (6.2), I get a picture that shows the world and the word Internet with a line to the time capsule but all the instructions that I have found and read say that I should get a dialogue box that lists the devices on the left hand side. The instructions with the TC say I open AU and follow the instructions and prompts - what instructions and prompts, there arnt any!!!
    - also, the picture does NOT pick up the 2 airport expressess in the house that I used to extend the wirelass network on the previous TC
    - there is no option to extend the wireless network
    - every now and then the TC light goes Yellow and airport utility "looses" the TC
    - TC seems to want to back up the entire MAC (c350gb) but it is doing so at a very slow speed and only did about 2.5gb over night. I dont mind a whole new backup to the new TC but it cant be right that it will take 19 days (the last time I looked!)
My main frustration is that the so-called simple instructions dont seem to replate at all to my system and I'm frustrated because I dont know where to go to get any help....and if Apple email me one more time to say they cant reach me then I will definately take the TC back!!
    Can anyone help me?
p.s. sorry for the rant, i though this would be a half hour job to upgrade my wirelass and is turning into a nightmare!

Unfrotunately, this sounds like a dead TC.
    - also, the picture does NOT pick up the 2 airport expressess in the house that I used to extend the wirelass network on the previous TC
    - there is no option to extend the wireless network
You need to reconfigure the Expresses to rejoin the TC's network via a factory reset.

  • My new 2tb time capsule becomes undiscoverable after a few hours, any help?

I just purchased a new 2TB TC this past weekend.  I plugged it in, and have wirelessly hooked up two imacs, a macbook pro, and an apple tv to it.  It is hooked directly to my modem and has replaced my previous router.  The problem I am having is that after about a day, none of the computers can discover it via airport utility or on the network tab.  Any suggestions, because it is really getting annoying having to restart it every morning etc.  How do I make it recognized 24/7?  Thanks!

What if we cannot limit to 5 GHz n network only. I have a cell phone that only will use 2.4 ghz network.
    Try this.
Open the manual setup of the TC
Disable the Guest Network if not needed.
Give the 5GHz network a separate name. (even when not needed)
Switch the radio modus of the wireless to "802.11n only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g"
You will reach this option by clicking the drop down menu while holding the option key (alt)
After that, force the supporting station(s) (MacBook Air in your case) to use the 5GHz network name only and connect the smartphone to the 802.11g.
Delete the 2.4GHz network from the list of the "known networks" in the System Settings of the MBAir while the wireless of the Air is switched to OFF
Eventually check the following to optimize your wireless infrastructure. That will ease the things too.
General radio problems in wireless networks based on disturbance from interferences, obstacles in or reflections of the radio beam
The radio beams of a wireless are not Roentgen X-Ray based and therefore obstacles, interferences from other wireless systems or reflections of the radio beam could cause major disturbance of the wireless network and based on this, the data stream in the network.
    Possible reasons of wireless problems:
Obstacles like Walls, magnetic fields from live high voltage lines, antenna cable or insufficient shielded speaker systems. Metal frames or plating, furniture, bundled water pipes, dry construction plaster walls*, Humans* and much more.
Interferences from other radio equipment like Bluetooth, cordless phones, neighborhood WiFi, cordless speakers, cordless doorbells, intercoms, ptt units, baby phone's, surveillance and alarm systems, commercial weather radar, some military equipment and so on.
*) Water is a big bar for radio. Plastered dry construction walls and Humans contain a lot of water.
One of the above named possible reasons or any combination can cause major annoyance due to unwanted network traffic or packet collisions and could at last force stations to disassociate from the network or get disassociated by access point (router) due to time out or signal loss.
User experience: Heavy fading signal strength, slow and sluggish wireless connection iTunes/Video stream drop, lousy data transfer speed, total connection loss or only time relating disturbances here and there.
    Possible Solutions:
Placement of transmitter. Not flat at the wall. Not in a corner, not on the floor, not behind a furniture, not near of other radio sources e.g. cordless phones. Not near of anything that can reflect radio beams. Best: as high as possible; e.g. Airport Extreme mount on ceiling. Maximum possible line of sight to all stations respectively corners of the home.
    Placement of stations: as obvious
Placement of yourself: If possible not between your Mac' antenna(s) and the transmitter.
Radio interferences: Check that the channel you use have at least a 5 channel gap to the two strongest wireless networks around. If possible use the recommended overlapping free channels for your country for best performance. On 2.4GHz networks -> for US-1,6,11 and for Europe 1,5,9,13. If possible swap to 5GHz 802.11n only and force the stations supporting this to use only 5GHz. Disable 802,11a/b/g wireless if possible. Place cordless phone stations as far away from the router (access point) as possible. Eventually disable all radio transmitting equipment in the house. If the wireless then work better, enable one at the time to see which is the disturbing one. Don't forget leaking microwave ovens. A running faulty microwave may drown your complete wireless network at once and your neighbors WiFi too.

  • My Mac can no longer find my Time Capsule or my home network.

Hello, having had no problems for the first few months I can no longer get online. My Mac cannot find my network (but can find all of the other networks on my street) and cannot find the Time Capsule. The Time Capsule itself has a green light so I assume is working fine. My daughter knocked the ethernet cable from the the Time Capsule around the time it stopped working - could this be related? We also moved our cordless phone near to the Time Capsule around the same time - could this be the problem? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Smokerz, thanks for the help. A couple of very basic questions to clarify (I am clueless about these things).
    1. When you say power down the modem you mean unplug it? (I currently get my cable TV and phone through it as well).
    2. How do I go about changing the channel on the router? (which I assume is the Time Capsule?).
Apologies for my ignorance and thanks for any help.

  • Will Time Capsule solve my home network problem?

My 2 laptop pc's are connected to westell dsl modem/linksys router. However my 2 brand new Macs see and list my network, but will not connect to it. Will TC be a better way to connect my home network?

If both Macs are running Leopard, then make sure the Linksys router has the newest firmware available from the manufacturer.
Linksys has had problems with Leopard so make sure you have the latest software/firmware for it.

  • I have a slow Internet connection since I included time capsule in my home network.

I did follow some advices and use PPOE to connect.  Set the modem in bridge and TC with PPoe. fast connection still comes and goes. Any suggestions? thank you in advance!

Did you factory reset.. ie power off.. hold in reset.. power on again.. and keep holding in reset until it flashes rapdily.
Setup the TC in complete network isolation. ie no connection to the rest of the network.
    Do it manually with ethernet.
After a factory reset the TC will be at 10.0.1.1 and you can use that.
Plug LAN port TC into the computer.
    Leave wireless turned on.
So first thing.. make sure ipv6 is set to link-local in both ethernet and wireless.
After the reset it should look exactly like this.
In airport utility now open the top menu, configure other.
Type in the IP address of the TC.
    Then ok.
Go to the base station tab GIve it a new name.
Please use all names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. NOT APPLE NAMES..
    eg TCgen5
Mavericks in particular works better with these names.
Go to the internet tab and choose dhcp for connection with the modem doing pppoe.
Go to the network tab and choose Off (bridge mode).
Go to the wireless tab and create a wireless network.
eg TC24ghz and set under wireless options, TC5ghz
You can now update the TC and plug it back into the modem. Plug it by ethernet to the computer. (or use wireless as a second best).

So, I have just about had it. For nine days now,  I have valiantly tried to move my library to an external drive. At first, I attempted to move it to my 2TB Time capsule. iTunes didn't like its new home though and moved home without telling me. So then there were two libraries. I meshed them back together reluctantly and iTunes in a silent revolt, absolutely refused to use its own 'Keep Library Organized' criteria and may as well have thrown my music against the wall. Seriously, my 5 year old nephew has his computer files better managed. Then I bought a 3TB Time Capsule and you may ask yourself why??? Well, iTunes doubled in size- although when I ran apps that are designed to find duplicate iTunes files, it deleted the music I actually bought from iTunes. So then I watched as iTunes got it back. How you ask; I run a MacBook Air, iMac and Mac mini in my house - as soon as one powered up it hit the net like a sailor on leave and re-downloaded it all without abandon. I tried to keep the libraries separate, no success there. I tried to keep them unified; iTunes response was to ask me if I wanted to join iTunes Match every time I logged on to my computer and on any computer - my iTunes match song number has been as high as 24,367 and as low as 11,112. And I can't simply refuse iTunes. No one refuses iTunes. Refusal to allow iTunes Match to run through all 24000 songs again was to revoke my rights to the songs that were once part of my library. If I took a long time to decide or was visibly impatient while iTunes did its little 3 hour scan it would arbitrarily decide that music I bought from iTunes was ineligible for iTunes Match. How could that possibly be??? I am missing music, or at least iTunes tells me so by showing me that lovely exclamation point. I have tried backing up my computer to do a full system restore and start all over. Time Capsule claims I have 979 GB of data and takes its sweet time to even back up one gig (about 18 minutes) even though I can transfer files to my Time Capsule at about 1 GB every 40 seconds. I guess though performing back-ups are somewhat like government jobs; it will get done, when it gets done. The back up requirement of 979 GB is surprising though, my Mac claims that I currently occupy just about 25% of my 2TB drive. The discrepancy, who knows, but I think the solution lies somewhere in iTunes. But maybe iPhoto. But that is for another time.

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move.  Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way.  Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.

  • I have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule. Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh? Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?

    Hi,
I  have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule.
    a) Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh?
    b) Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?
    Thanks,
    Paul

You may not need to buy a new Time Capsule.
You can connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, and use it in addition to the TC's internal HD.  You may need a powered USB hub as well.
Exactly what is on your TC?  If it's only Time Machine backups, you may not need to do anything -- Time Machine will delete the oldest backup(s) automatically when it needs room for new ones.  But if you have more than about 250 GB on your internal HD, that 500 GB may not be large enough to keep backups long enough.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, besides your backups, you could back up to the external HD and use the internal for the other data, or vice-versa.  But TM backups cannot "span" two drives, and you shouldn't mix backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.
