Adding a New iPods

My daughter wants her first iPod for Christmas. I'm thinking about getting her the new Nano. I may treat myself and replace my video iPod with the new iTouch. I will be using the same computer to download songs for my daughter. Will this be hard to do? I want to use the same iTunes account, but be able to pick and choose which songs will go on my kids iPod. Any ideas?

As your sync option (at least for your daughter), choose Sync Selected Playlists. That way you can set up playlists that are appropriate (both in content and size) for your daughter. It may also be a useful option for you if your library is larger than your iPod. I find it much more satisfactory than the Sync only checked items method. You'll find the options for Syncing Selected Playlists on the Music Tab when the iPod is plugged in. You'll also want to select it for Movies, Televsion Shows and Podcasts. Each has it's own tab.
Best of luck.
P.S. The Touch is great!

  • I added a new iPod and now iTunes won't recognize my old iPod

My old iPod's battery is just about dead. It is about three years old; I will send it to Apple for a new battery.
In the meantime, I bought a new 5th generation iPod, 60 GB. It's great! Eventually the old iPod will be my work iPid and the new one wil be the home and recreation iPod.
Here's the problem. I researched using two iPods from the same copy of iTunes. In response to my questions in this forum, someone referred me to the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432, "How to use multiple iPods with one computer", which I read, and which supported the idea that you can work with two iPods from one copy of iTunes.
My goal, then, was to follow Method Two as described in the article, and use two iPods from my one computer, without setting up separate user accounts for each one.
So -- I plopped in the CD that came with the new iPod, installed the latest iTunes. It had me register the new iPod by serial number.
In my copy of iTunes, my old iPod was called "Mae Sot's iPod". I set up the new iPod as "Mae Sot's New iPod".
I thought that from now on, when I plugged in my old iPod, iTunes would be able to recognize it, and when I plugged in the new one, iTunes would recognize it.
    Wrong.
My copy of iTunes does great now in working with the new Ipod. But it totally rejects the old one.
When I plus in the old iPod to synch/recharge, I first get the Windows message in the lower right part of the screen with the headline, "USB device is not recognized", telling me that "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it..."
The first time this happened, that message eventually went away, iTunes launched, and I got an error message saying there was no folder for the device.
Now when I plug in the old iPod, I just get the "USB device is not recognized..." message, and iTunes does not launch.
Any idea what is the problem?
My goal is to get iTunes to add my old iPod as a recognized device, so that I can clean the music off it and send it to Apple for a new battery.

Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.

  • I added a new Ipod touch and it didn't give me an option of naming it something different than my old ipod which i still have and use

Is it possible to use both ipods with one itunes? Do they both need different accounts with itunes?

You can easily change the name of an iPod by just clicking on the name in the left-had side of iTunes under Devices.  You change the name just like you would change a file name.

  • Old iPod / iTunes - New iPod

Is there any issues with hooking up a new iPod to an exisiting iTunes account. I had an older iPod, upgraded, and was going to hook up the new one, but didn't know if it would eliminate the purchased songs, or not transfer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No. Adding a new iPod will not erase anything from the iTunes library or other iPods associated with that library.

  • I've added to ios6 to my new ipod touch with no problems. I'm trying to now restore the factory settings but the screen is frozen with an itunes sign and lead pointing towards it. The ipod won't even switch off. Can anyone help as it's driving me crazy

I've added ios6 to my new ipod but tried then to restore the factory settings. It won't extract any settings and the itunes then tells me that the server cannot be reached or is unavailable. I've been trying all day. Now the ipod has a itunes sign and a computer lead pointing towards it on the screen and this is frozen. It won't switch off or do anything else. Any ideas as this is now driving me crazy.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • If I help out a friend & download a free app (through my iTunes account) on their new iPod Touch, will their device automatically be added to my itunes device list (and they can see all my contacts, pix, music etc)?

If I help out a friend & download a free app (through my iTunes account) on their new iPod Touch, will their device automatically be added to my itunes device list (and they can see all my contacts, pix, music etc)?

Just wondering, what context is this in?
First up, is your iTunes account part of an iCloud account?
Secondly, if it's a free app, why don't they just download it? If they are having trouble finding it on the App Store, but you can find it easily, you can share the link for it via email with them, and if they view that email on their iPod they can just tap the link and it will open the App Store to that App for them, so they can download it themselves.
If you were to go to the Store settings pane and sign in with your iTunes account, that should only provide the possibility for download items from your iTunes account, such as purchased apps, music and movies. However, if you signed in, downloaded the app, and then went back and signed out of the account again, there shouldn't be any access apart from the app you downloaded. This is provided you sign in using the Store section of the Settings app, not the iCloud section.
One problem they will have if you download this in your account instead of theirs, in order to download updates for that app, they will need you to enter your iTunes password to download the updates. Doing that doesn't give them access to anythign to do with your account other than that update, but they will be unable to receive updates for it without your password. They would also likely be unable to sync the app onto their computer, as their computer would not be Authorised with your iTunes account.
If you can answer some of the questions I've asked, I may be able to suggest alternate ways for you get them the app on their device.
Hope this all helps a bit

  • I need to deauthorize all of my computers before adding my new one.  will my library remain intact and will i need to simply plug my ipod touch back in to the pc?  thx

i need to deauthorize all of my computers before adding my new one.  will my library remain intact and will i need to simply plug my ipod touch back in to the pc?  thx

    1. The library will remain as is. Back it up anyway.
    2. Authorize that computer individually before connecting the iPod touch to it.

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

    Hey danlizmil,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to move music from your iPod nano to your new computer, and you’re using the Transfer Purchases command in iTunes which isn’t copying music that wasn’t purchased from the iTunes Store. Take a look at the article linked below, it describes the supported ways to move your music to a new computer and provides more information about the Transfer Purchases feature.

  • New iPod touch, no longer able to add songs via iTunes

Have a new iPod touch, less than a week old. 3.1.2 OS and 9.0.2 iTunes on an iMac.
Was loading songs manually, walked away for a little while, left the iPod connected, now I cannot add songs.
I've restored the iPod, still unable to drop songs onto it from iTunes. I set it to sync checked songs, will not load that way either.
It will load apps, I reloaded the apps, but songs will not go on it. Drive isn't full, after the restore I loaded apps, about 4 gigs worth, and tried songs but nada, zip, zilch.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    Oddness...
Tried adding songs numerous ways, nothing. Walk away for a bit, come back, now I can add songs.
iPod gremlins? Taking it back tomorrow to see if they have any ideas...

  • Can i use my new ipod nano 7th generation on my macbook pro

I registered my new ipod nano 7th generation on my macbook pro.  While on my macbook, I tried to download wma audiobooks from the library using overdrive media console & its not working.....so, I decided to use my windows laptop.  I have the latest version of itunes on both laptops.  (I know I can download & transfer wma audiobooks to my shuffle using overdrive media console & windows laptop.)  I'm getting an error message that says I have to reformat my nano if I want to download wma audiobooks.  Can I use my nano on macbook pro & windows laptop?  will I ever be able to download wma audiobooks to my nano using macbook?

Your iPod Nano will need to be restored in iTunes on the Windows laptop before you can start adding/syncing content over to it.
Or if you want to use it with OverDrive on the Mac, you'll need to download the books as MP3s as WMA is not supported.

  • Problems of the new iPod

After one week testing the new iPod (60 Giga), i'm not happy to say that i'm quite disappointed.
I've a music library of 35 gigs and around 3000 photos. Few videos.
The major problem i've noticed is the artwork loading/displayng. In shuffle mode, artworks are showed correctly, but they takes lot of time for loading and the music occasionaly stops for a moment, while the HD is working.
But if i want to play an entire album, the songs frequently are skipped, the music takes many seconds to start, the screen animation remains locked, system freezed, the HD continuously works. I wonder why all this HD activity for loading only 20-80 kb of image data while it takes one second for loading one song of 10 megs? Often the first song of the album is skipped and the album is played from the second one. This problem occours as with artworks added manually, as with artworks of songs buyed from ITMS. No difference.
If i disable the artwork showing (from iTunes), the songs are loaded immediately, fast, with no issue, smooth as with my 4G iPod (no photo), where i have loaded in the same music library.
The photo display is nice, but slooooww! sometimes it takes 30 seconds or more to generate the thumbnail of one folder.
    And the HD works continuosly.
I've also checked the HD from disk utility, but everiyhing is OK.
Another note: everyone says that the quality of the display is great. I'm not so satisfied. The quality of the pictures is disappointing, all the colors are washed out. The same photo, showed on the display of my digital camera is absolutely better! The display is too bright for my taste, the photos are showed overexposed, but it lacks of a brightness adjustment...
The only thing i've found very nice and efficient is the movie play. For short movies (< 3 mins.) no issue.
In conclusion: from thee Photo side, this iPod suffers of some serious bugs that i hope to be corrected ASAP. In addition, the continuous HD activity when loading images (photos and artworks) dramatically drains the battery charge. The song skipping sometimes is a frustrating experience, due to the issue of the artwork loading that lock the entire system for few seconds.
I think that Apple has commercialized this product too soon, not yet well optimized and fully tested, only to have it available in the stores for Christmas time. But it's far to be what i've read on some reviews...

I wouldn't bet against a software update to fix this problem, but who knows how long you'd have to wait.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how to rectify the situation as I have tried every help setting for the last 4 hours.

I have tried everything I have read on the Internet about sync issues and restore etc and not there isn't a single song on my iPad or iPod touch. All of the songs are listed in my iTunes but are all greyed out, some have the cloud symbol next to them but lots don't and some say waiting.
Long and short is nothing will save to my devices at all.....HELP !!!!!!!?
