Can any one tell me how to add my new Sony Vaio laptop PC to my Airport office network (I needed to have a PC for checking web sites I create) - it works fine with ethernet but i was to use it around the house! Do i i need to add the MAC address as i did with my iphone? - and where would i find it?
Many thanks!

Hi Duane,
thanks for the reply....I have done that but as im not a pro PC user I am not sure what to do now to get the PC on my Airport network!

  • Adding an Airport Express to existing Airport Network- Help!

There is an Airport Extreme Base station upstairs "hard wired" (ethernet) to a G-5 Tower. There is a MacBook downstairs in the kitchen and it does not get a good connection. We are trying to add an Airport Express as a relay. I have followed the prompts on the Airport Setup Assistant. It recognises the new station gets all the way to the last screen and then can not be added because of "radio interference/conflict" something to that effect. (Sorry I do not have the exact working from the screen.)
Does any one know of an step by step intruction guide in setting up an Airport Express as a relay??
All the Apple manuals and articles say is to follow the on screen prompts. There does not seem to be a specific instruction guide.

    Duane thanks for your help.
Well I think so. We do see it in the list of available networks in the menu bar.
I think I will try and set it up in the same room as the base station. Does that make sense?

  • I've suddenly lost all Airport networks HELP!

G5 dual 2.5 APExtreme card that worked untill recently. The computer is hardwired to the Wireless router. It was an APExtreme base, but has been switched to a net gear. All of the other computers in the office, G5, and three powerbooks all "see" the new network on the netgear, however this one G5 no longer shows any networks when AP is on. Usually I can see at least two other nearby networks, but not now.
I've tried fsck, permissions, optimization, and can't figure this one out.
    Any suggestions

  • Help - Airport network not working - confused!!

Hello, I wonder if anyone out there can help. I have got a problem with my airport network that doesn't make any sense and I havent seen another post with the same problems.
I have an imac G5 with 10.3.9. I have a wireless network set up, with an airport wireless card and two ax boxes (the second was bought later to boost the signal when we moved the Mac to another room). Initially it set up fine and worked for about 8-9 months. Then I noticed the second ax started behaving strangely. It would occasionally turn from 'green' to flashing amber for no reason - often after it had been on for a while. Turning it off and on did not change anything. Usually though it would work again the next day after being off all night. This continued to happen randomly until a couple of months later it switched to flashing amber continually.
I thought it had 'lost' the network so I tried using the airport set up assistant to reconnect it. However the set up assistant does not recognise ax number 2 any more, so I am not able to reconnect it. At the moment I am running off a faint signal from ax number 1.
I also tried setting up a completely new network from scratch. Again the new network is fine from the base ax bx but ax number 2 is still not recognised by my mac.
I also have a wireless printer connected to the network which does not work any more. This is where things became more confusing. The printer needs a boost signal to operate so when my booster ax went wrong the printer would not work. So I moved the printer and mac nearer ax number 1 to ensure it would pick up the network. However it still didn't work. So I attempted to set up the printer as wireless again, thinking it had become 'disconnected' somehow. However during installation you have to select the network to connect to. The computer would not pick up the apple network at all from ax number 1, yet it easily recognises our neighbours network from the flat above us. Strangely when I tried turning on the faulty ax box, the printer set up program picked up the faulty ax and not the original ax. But obviously I can't use the printer from the faulty ax box because it doesnt connect to the rest of the network.
So now I am confused. I am not sure what has gone wrong and what I need to replace. Originally I thought it was the second ax box that had gone wrong. But as the printer software can identify the second ax box I am not sure that this is the problem. Could there be something wrong with the airport card? I have checked that the card is properly connected and there is nothing visibly wrong there.
If anyone can help - please reply as I am going crazy here with things not working and don't know what to do next.
    Thanks, Wrenster

    Hello Wrenster,
I understand why you are confused, I was too while reading your post. However I have the solution for you. I believe you are a victim of environmental interference. Someone in your neighborhood just moved in with a another network, someone had a baby and is using a baby monitor, or maybe a local ham radio operator just got his license. Who knows!
This is what you need to do. Get all the devices in the same room and preform a hard restart on each one them per http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044. Remember to preform a hard restart! After performing a hard restart on all three devices check the wireless networks available. You should have 3 ( one main and 2 airport expresses) ( or two depending on how many airports you own, I am not sure from your post). If you don't have the correct amount you may a bum base station and it may need to be replaced. But if you have the correct number of wireless networks ( Apple network XXXXXXX), use the airport admin utility ( inside of the utility folder ) to locate the main base station and configure it.
You will know when you are on the configuration page when you can read Name, Contact and Location.
First change the name to the location of the main base station, ie; it is the den so name should read DEN. leave the contact and location alone. On the bottom half of the page is where you create your network, so under network name change it to your desired network name ie; when others come over to my house I have them select COWSWEAT from the network list.
Second click on the change wireless security and set the security to WEP 128 BIT and make your password. Once you have configured a successful password be sure to click on the lock on the main configuration page ( the one with password under it) to get the HEX password for your PC friends.
Third ( we are almost done ) Select the WDS tab at the top and enable this base station as a main station. Select allow other wireless client on this base station as well. Now on that empty list box below click the plus sign to the right to add other base stations to this WDS network. From here you should be able to select the other 2 base station that we have not configure yet ( but preformed a hard restart on). After you have added them ( be sure the check box for auto configure is selected) they should read in the list that was empty on the WDS page.
Now update this should start the update process and may take 5-10 mins, it should provide a summery pop-up when with each station is done.
( Also you may get a message that there is update for the base station, please preform the updates for the selected base stations)
Now when it is completed check to see how many networks you have available ( it should only be one ). Select the network and confirm that all of your base stations appear under the select a base station in Airport admin utility, then move them back to their homes around the house. Giving them 45 secs to restart they should turn green if not , they could out of range of each other or the environmental interference could be affecting them. So you my need to rearrange them until they all green.
    Good Luck,
    Cowsweat

  • Adding a PC to my Airport Express Network

I set up an Airport Express after my brighthouse-supplied linksys wireless router died . I have three computers on the network: An old Dell Laptop running Windows '98 ; a Dell PC running Windows XP Home Edition.
I cannot seem to figure out why the PC's are not seeing my Network, it is not masked or WEP encrypted/password protected.
I havent used a PC in years so I cant remember the procedure.

Ok, this can be done with a static WDS.
Here is the basic steps to do so:
    Static WDS Setup
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, temporarily connect both 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) to any available LAN port on the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). When setup is complete, you can then relocate them to the desired locations. Be sure to jot down the AirPort IDs (MAC addresses) for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS. The AirPort ID is printed on the label on the bottom/side of the base station.)
Main Base Station Setup - AEBSn
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AEBSn.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the AEBSn, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. (Note: You may have to hold down the Option key before clicking the menu for this option to appear on the 802.11n models.)
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of AXn#1.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AXn#2
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select AXn#2, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.
Relay Base Station Setup - AXn#1
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select AXn#1, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS relay” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the Main AirPort ID field.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the remote base station this relay base station will connect to.
o Click Update to transfer the new WDS settings to the relay and remote base stations.

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Some help needed setting up NAT in 2x Airport network

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on how to get port forwarding to work on my network.
DSL comes into the house downstairs and from the DSL modem it goes right into an Airport Express. I am on the second floor though, and the Airport's signal isn't strong enough for my G5's antenna to pick up. That's why I have another Airport Express on the first floor, expanding the Airport network.
The two Airport Express units are in a "WDS".
I would like to run a home server, so I have to open up port 21 and forward it to my G5, which gets its internet from the 2nd Airport Express unit.
How do I do this? The Airport's have IP's in the 10.0.0.x range. The G5 is in the 192.168.2.x range because it also connects to a wired router. Do they both have to be in the same range?
Port Forwarding seems disabled on the Airports because I use WDS. I can check the Distribute IP checkbox in the Network tab, but then I get a warning it shouldn't be enabled with WDS on.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Maarten

    Hi Henry,
I managed to get it working. I thought port fowarding was greyed out on both Airport units, but it only was on the relay one. Not on the main one. Also, I first accidently forwarded port 21 to the G5's wired IP address instead of its wireless (Airport) IP address.
The setup is exactly as you described (your 2nd paragraph). The wired router is only there to connect 4 PC's to the G5. They don't need internet (I don't want Windows to have internet), they just need just data transfer with the G5 (MIDI data and VNC control). It's on a different IP range than the Airport network.
One issue I am still experiencing is that when Airport is turned on on the G5, the router network (the 4 PC's) don't appear in Finder > Network. When I turn off Airport, the router network appears within a second. So there is a file sharing conflict or something there.
    Thanks for your help,
    Maarten

  • Adding a Rev B to an AirPort network

Ok, I have an AirPort network set up at my house that uses an AirPort Extreme (g) Base Station (AEBS) to connect to the internet. I can use that connection by using wifi connections from my iMac G4 (10.3.9), iMac G5 (10.4.10), PowerBook (10.4.10), and iPhone. I currently have to use AOL dial-up to connect the Bondi Rev B (9.1.x) to the internet since it is not AirPort capable. For file transfer I have a cat5 crossover cable connecting the Rev B iMac to the G4 iMac.
So can I use either another AEBS or an Airport Express (AE) connected to the Rev B ethernet port to connect to my AirPort network. How would I have to configure the AEBS/AE to work with 9.1?

You should be able to use an Airport Express in "WDS Remote" mode. I have an Airport Exreme (n), and I repurposed my Airport Express in the living-room to connect my TiVo to the network. It works great; the TiVo just sees it as a wired Ethernet connection. I think your old iMac would also see it as a wired Ethernet connection.
How would I have to configure the AEBS/AE to work with 9.1?
You wouldn't. You configure them using one of your Mac OS X Macs.
You could connect the Bondi iMac directly to the Airport base station by Ethernet (wired), but you would have considered that already, so I'm assuming the two are not conveniently located to allow a wired connection.
Here's something you might try instead, since you have several other Macs, and one of them is already connected to the Bondi iMac via Ethernet. On the Mac OS X Mac, go to System Preferences > Sharing pane > Internet tab. Since that Mac is connected to the Internet via wireless, you should be able to share its built-in Ethernet port. So it would be "share your connection from Airport to computers using Built-in Ethernet." I think Mac OS 9 on the Bondi would see it as a regular wired connection. You have everything you need, so give it a try if the result will meet your needs.
The other option is to get a USB wireless adapter. Unfortunately, I think you mentioned that your Bondi iMac has Mac OS 9.1, so that would not work. I don't know of any USB wireless adapters with Mac OS 9 drivers. There are, however, Ethernet wireless adapters. They would work similarly to the Airport Express, but may be less expensive. Mac OS 9 on the Bondi should see it as a regular wired connection. I haven't tried any (other than the Airport Express) so can't give a recommendation for brand and model.
Thanks for the info. I have a second AEBS(g) that I picked up on closeout after the 802.11n models came out. But I had tried using my original one years ago just for file transfer and I couldn't get it to work. I'll try the internet sharing route; though I think I tried it before. Regarding the AirPort Express, I believe it says OS X only but that must for configuration since you have it working with your Tivo. I might be able to use the second AEBS as a Remote.

  • Adding Thinkpad to Airport Network: Need hardware and software config

I have an IBM Thinkpad T30 Laptop.
I want to add it to an existing Airport network.
    1. What is the required hardware to be installed and configured on the Thinkpad.
    2. What is the required software to be installed and configured on the Thinkpad.
    thank you.
IBM Thinkpad T30   Windows XP Pro   WIndows XP Pro SP2

    1. What is the required hardware to be installed and configured on the Thinkpad.
Depending on the exact model of the Thinkpad T30, a variety of 802.11b wireless Mini PCI Adapters were pre-installed. In addition, all T30 models support Type III or Type II PC Cards. (ref: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid= MIGR-42308)
If your T30 did not come with an internal Mini PCI adapter, most wireless PC cards, that support 802.11b/g, should work with the AirPort base stations.
    2. What is the required software to be installed and configured on the Thinkpad.
Being that this is a Apple User-to-User support forum, you might find better luck getting specific answers to IBM/Lenovo laptops on those vendors support forums, but I would think as a minimum, you would need the device drivers installed that came with the wireless PC card and it would be a good idea to install the AirPort 4.2 for Windows software to administer the AirPort from your PC.

  • Adding a PC to my wireless network

I would like to find out how I can add a Windows laptop (as yet unpurchased, so assume your basic Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc. running Windows 7) to my wireless network. I currently have an iMac running 10.6.5 and an Airport Extreme Base Station. I would like to add the PC to my network so that I can browse, share and edit files across my network. Does anyone have any links, how-tos, advice on how I can do this? Also, other than convenience, are there any upsides/downsides to this (besides having to work on a Windows computer!)? Thanks in advance.

Very similar to the Macs, Windows-based PCs can be configured to share resources: files, internal or attached hard drives, attached-printers, or internal or attached CD drives.
How to configure the PC to do so will be based on the exact operating system of your new device.
Three ways to experience this before going out and buying a PC is: 1) Borrow a PC from a friend, colleague or relative, 2) Use Bootcamp, under OS X to install the Windows OS that you will be interested in, and 3) Similarly, install either Parallels or VMware to run Windows as a virtual Guest.
Using any of these methods can help answer your second question on the upsides/downsides of adding a Windows client to your network.

  • Complicated (to me) Airport network question

    Greetings:
I am running an Airport network with the following devices -
2 Airport Extremes in a WDS network
    4 Airport Express(s) - 1 as a printer interface, 3 as Airtunes devices
Various ethernet devices connected to the base station routers
All working perfectly - then I get this problem.
Two days ago I added a Panasonic BL-C131A wireless Network Camera to the system.
It requires a port assignment and a static IP address.
Got it up and running perfectly. Ran for multiple hours without a problem.
Suddenly problems - became erratic, then unresponsive.
After a day of diagnosing the problem, I have discovered this:
If I restart the camera, it will connect wirelessly to the Airport and work perfectly until any other client joins the network. Then the problem occurs.
If I connect the camera to the Airport via ethernet cable, I do not get this problem. It only occurs when operating in the wireless mode.
I have contacted Panasonic customer support, they were helpful, but since the camera connects correctly and operates correctly when using ethernet access to the Airport, and the problem occurs only when using the wireless side of the Airport, they though it might be a problem or setting on the Airport system.
Any help, guidance, or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

This cannot be the final answer the Panasonic BL-C131A camera was working fine with a cheap wireless router that I had before the Airport Extreme. I cannot even get it to talk to AE router.
My Fujitsu tablet is also having problems cannot connect either.
My two Dell notebooks connect okay but they are slow.
Anybody else have any luck with the BL-C131A camera?
    Thanks,
    FBNRaider
