Adding a second hard drive for my W520

I'd like to add a second drive for my W520. I need more space to run vmware for demonstrations. I was reading in this article - http://www.storagereview.com/lenovo_thinkpad_w520_upgrade_guide
That I could add a second drive by removing the cd drive and adding some kind of adapter.
Does anyone know the par number for that adapter?
Also, I'd like a 7200 rpm drive for this additional one - I don't need SSD.
Oh, and a part number for that would be great, too, if you know it.

i know you mentioned not needing an SSD, but if you don't use WWAN, have you at all considered an mSATA SSD installed under the keyboard? you could run the OS/swap/temp/apps from it, then use the platter drive for data/documents and keep your bay flexible for addtional HDDs or the optical drive.

Adding a second hard drive for storage

So you've added another hard drive to your system... its detected correctly in BIOS, and when you boot into Windows its listed in Device Manager, but it is not visible in My Computer and you can't save anything to it because Windows doesn't see it?
Well, if its not partioned and formatted in a format that Windows recognises, then of course it won't!
Its very easy to do, and as this gets asked so many times, here's a brief step by step guide. (The screenshots are shown from Windows 7, but will appear identical in Windows Vista, and very similar in Windows XP with some different wording)
First of all, right-click Computer in your Start Menu or desktop (My Computer in Windows XP), and in the pop-out menu, select Manage.
This will open up the Computer Management console. In the left-hand pane, under Storage, click on Disk Management (Drive Management in Windows XP). This will then bring up a list of all storage drives connected to your computer, and in the lower half you can visibly see what partitions are on each drive.
Your new drive will be shown here, but it will show as 'Unallocated' (RAW in Windows XP).
Right-click anywhere in the Unallocated space, and in the pop-out menu, select New Volume ('Create partition' in Windows XP). This will open a wizard to help you create and format a partition.
First of all, you can select how big your partition is, if you want to make more than one. By default, it will select the size of the whole drive.
Next you can assign a drive letter. Remember, if you don't assign a drive letter, then the partition will be hidden from Windows.
Next, is where you format your partition. Best leave it at the default setting of NTFS. You can also name your new partition here if you like. A quick format usually suffices, so leave that box ticked.
Click Finish in the next screen, and your partition will be created and formatted.
And your new drive is ready to be used in Windows!

Adding a second Hard Drive for /var and /opt

I need some help... I have an Ultra 60 with 1 36 Gig drive, Solaris 10 with Java DeskTop. I want to add a 9 Gig drive to extend /var and /opt. Below is the data on the disk (format). My question is: How do I set this disk up so the /var and the /opt can extend into the new drive and then mount the drive. I am NOT a guru on setting up HD's and have read the Solaris admin book part to help me along, I am very lost. When I installed Solaris 10 I gave the /var 15 megs. It seems Solaris 10 patch manager wants to install all the patches in /var/sadm/patch thus I am eating up the 15 megs fast. What I need to know is just how to set up the below drive... HELP!

Here's another idea: use Live Upgrade. I'll assume your "new" 9G disk is on /dev/dsk/c0t1d0. Use format to partition the disk with one partition, /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0. Don't mount the new parititon. Use Live Upgrade lucreate to put the boot environment on the new partition:
lucreate -c be1 -n be2 -m /:/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0:ufs(You can probably come up with more useful names than "be1" and "be2"!)
lucreate will copy over all your existing root, /usr/, /var to the new disk. This will take a while, but you can continue using your system while it runs (no need to be in single user mode.) When it's done, use luactivate to make the new boot environment active and boot it.
This gives you a system with everything in one partition. If you want to stick with different partitions for the different systems, lucreate can do that too, see the man page and docs. I think it's more trouble than it's worth for a single-user/desktop type system.
Once you're up on the new disk, you can look into repartitioning the old disk to get you a similar-size partition to use as a spare boot environment, and you can start using Live Upgrade for what it was designed for: letting you upgrade without taking the system down.

The right part number for the hard drive kit is 681976-001. The support website for the laptop is on HP Sweden so run the part number on google.co.uk (or your Swedish). I have found the cheapest on us amazon for $38 or £42.

I'm having a hard time finding a SATA III cable and caddy for a second hard drive for my laptop. Any ideas? Right now, I just have an extra 1.8 inch drive I can't use.

The dv4 series only has 1 hard drive bay, you cannot install a second drive. If you want to have more than one hard drive, try the dv7 series

Can anyone recommend a second hard drive for my PowerPC G5

Sorry if this question has been asked before but I need the answer in a hurry.
I need to fit a second hard drive into my PowerPC G5 - and I have never done this before. I phoned a company to buy a drive and they said that there can be compatibility problems with certian drives and Macs. A friend at work also confirmed this and pointed me to the site www.xlr8yourmac.com which has a database of drives and their associated problems.
Unfortunately I don't have time to digest all of the info. I am letting a friend use my Mac for a project that they are working on and they need the space urgently. They are working to a strict deadline.
So basically what I would like to know is if anyone can recommend a drive that I can fit without it causing any problems. I need a high quality, fast and very quiet drive for audio and video production. The drive should be 250GB, 7200RPM, 16MB cache. The Mac support pages say it must be a serial ATA drive but I have no idea if you can use ATAII or ATA300 (or any other number???).
Also - as I have never done this before - I have heard 'jumpers' mentioned - will I need to set the jumpers to a particular configuration?

How do I use my second hard drive for storage, not back up?

Hi, I bought a second hard drive to store files (not back-up for my system), but when I moved some files over to drive two and then deleted the same files from drive one, they also deleted from the 2nd drive! Fortunately I could reverse the process and there was no loss, but what now? How do I disconnect the two so I can use the second as storage?

Whilst I normally drag files around, a copy and paste still should have created a replica on the destination drive.
That the second is mounted internally makes my describing it as an external drive inaccurate, but wouldn't cause the problem.
So that still leaves the scant possibility that the original source is itself an alias.
Was the copy and paste done in a Finder window or was it done via some other application's window?
I look forward to an update on this unusual event.

ADD A SECOND HARD DRIVE FOR WINDOWS

Hi Folks
I am a relatively new Mac user. My MacPro is my first Mac. So far, after 23 years on a PC, I am absolutely in heaven. I think my question may be very basic, but I like to ask before I jump.
I have purchased a second hard drive and it is my intention to install it and run Windows on it. I want to keep on using some of the Windows applications that I have. I purchased the HD from Mac Mall and yesterday I pyhsically located it in it place in the case. I did not run any kind of installation routine, I just plugged it in. I did get a message, but I told the computer to ignore the drive for now.
I also have Parallels. I am not sure if I even need that if I have a seperate drive. So, now you are getting an idea of my question. What do I do next?
Can someone walk me through the installation of that second drive, coach me on whether or not I even need Parallels, and get me to the point where I can install Windows on the new drive?
I sure would appreciate it?

Download Windows 7 64-bit free from MS.
Pull your OS X drive.
Boot from the DVD you burned from the ISO of Windows 7 RC.
Install as normal.
If you later want to run Windows side by side inside OS X then you would need Parallels or something.
Windows will find drivers for most things and treat it as you did on PC.
For OS X, I recommend this book:

Second Hard drive for HP Pavilion dv-7 3157 ca

I am looking at putting a second hard drive into my HP Pavilion dv-7 3157 ca, I know the first hard drive has a maximum size of 500 GB, but as for the second drive can it be 1 TB or is the total of both hard drive 1TB ie: 2x500 GB?
A second question, looking for a link where I can buy the caddy, cable and hard drive, as this model is not common and the info out there is very confusing.

Adding a second hard drive. Should I use LVM?

This particular desktop station has one single hard drive with two ext3 partitions atm.
I read a little bit about LVM and I am wondering what I should do with that second hard drive as for a setting it up. It will mainly be used to store media files with local network access.
Considering it is only one hard drive (500G) is it worth using LVM?

As always in Linux its all about what You want to do.
So as you read LVM is another abstraction layer between hardware and software. What affects a bit performance since file systems are not created on real partitions but virtual devices provided by LVM. As benefit you gain possibility to manage freely available disk space without necessity of using a partitioning program. Actually its not possible since such programs cant handle partitions created on LVM.
However please note that if you do not use LVM you can still manage your disk space using applications such as gparted. Of course only on those partitions that are not currently mounted.
So this solution (LVM) becomes very handy when you often have to reorganize your disk space (moving partition using partitioning program can be very time consuming) or you just want to forget about partitioning and disk usage calculations...
Personally I never used LVM because of this what I pointed out above. LVM gives flexibility in managing disk space but there are other ways to get it. Of course there are also users who cant live without it!

Second Hard Drive for Satellite P70 A01d Help

I want to install a second hard drive in my laptop. I have a 2tb Samsung Spinpoint M9T, however the hard drive has 4 extra pins which don't connect to the laptop. Do these pins need to connected or is there something else i can do to onnect the hard drive?

I am trying to put a second hard drive in my DV9607. bought a second drive but, the connections didnt match. At first, I thought it had some wierd HP propriatary connector on it but realized it is the bracket that holds the drive in the chassis. like to find out how i can get this piece. part #? suplier?

Adding another external hard drive for Masters. A3

My masters are on a 500 GB LaCie "Rugged" which is piggy backed to a 1 TB LaCie used for Time Machine backup. Is it true that one doesn't need to access the masters because most work is done on versions within the library? In which case if the external hard drive is full can I just replace it with another hard drive? Help would be much appreciated. Cheers, jp.

Every Image has a Master.
The Master is a file.
The Image is in your Library.
The Library attaches to the Image a pointer to the Master.
The pointer is in your Library.
The Master can be anywhere that Aperture can access.
The Master should be on a drive attached directly to your computer. (Apple has warned in the past of problems with Masters on NAS.)
When Aperture can access a Master, it is "on-line".
When Aperture can not access a Master, it is"off-line".
(When Aperture can access the volume to which the pointer points, but does not find your Master, it is "missing".)
When an Image's Master is off-line, you cannot add Adjustments or export either the Master or a Version (you can, confusingly, export the Preview).
This is all clever, and very useful in practice. A rule-of-thumb: if you need to make adjustments to an Image, or export that Image, keep that Image's Master handy. Conversely, if you are done making adjustments to an Image and do not need to be able to quickly export an Image, you do not need to keep that Image's Master handy.
Theoretically, every Master could be on its own drive. This is impracticable, but possible. In your case, with your 500 GB drive full, you should winnow your Masters at some point, but you should also either:
. purchase another 500 GB drive, or
. purchase a 1 TB drive and move all your Masters to it (using Aperture's "File→Relocate Masters" commandwith both drives mounted).
The second is the simpler approach. All your Masters are on one drive, so:
. you always know where a Master is, and
. backing up your Masters involves less administration than having Masters on multiple drives.
Aperture will take advantage of whatever speed boost you give it, but in general you get much much more bang-for-the-buck speeding up, roughly in this order, throughput from:
. RAM
. CPU
. GPU
. Aperture LIbrary volume
. System volume
than you get speeding up the volume on which your Image's Masters are stored.
