Adding a Shadow 3D

I'm trying to create a shadow but I'd like to make it so it appears like it's in 3D. The shadows utility under Layer Style makes a shadow as if the object would be floating on top of the other layer. But what if I would like to make it appear as if it would be touching the other layer at one point. For example a ball on a table or a person standing up on the grass.
thanks !

thanks you verrrry much . It's fun to find new ways to do stuff.
Nice Day

  • Trouble adding drop shadows to buttons

I am creating DVD menus for the first time in Encore CS4. I want the (=1) version of the buttons -- when you put the cursor over them-- to have a drop shadow so I added one in my Photoshop file. But the effect does not appear when I preview it in my Encore project. And when I tried to add it within Encore, it wouldn't let me. (The "drop shadow" option appeared gray and un-clickable.)
Is it possible to do what I'm trying to do? If so, any ideas how?

Unfortunately, there are grave limitations, regarding what can be part of a Sub-picture Highlight. It can ONLY be 8-bit color on a DVD, and can ONLY have one level of Transparency/Opacity.
There are some workarounds, such as duplicate Menus, linked from an Auto-Activate Button, but in your case, you might get what you want from some tips in this ARTICLE. It starts with "Punching a Hole in Sub-Picture Highlights," but does cover adding a "Glow," that appears to be a Gradient. It is not, but rather looks like it is. You could substitute that Gradient Glow for your Drop Shadow.
Good luck, and hope that it helps,

  • Adding drop shadow on a stroke w/ opacity.

    Hello,
I need to create a button wherein the stroke has 40% opacity then add a drop shadow on the edges.
The problem is, I can also see the shadow behind the stroke since it's not on 100% opacity.
How do I make it so that the shadow only shows up on the edges of the stroke?
    Thank you,
    Zyer

I tried this with Illustrator cs 4, sorry my version is French, I translated usefull French words for you, check under the printscreen below
    Fond= background
    Contour=stroke,
    ombre portée= drop shadow
    produit= multiply
and well you guessed it "opacité" stands for opacity

  • Adding a shadow to image in PS Elements 8

I am pretty new to PS and still trying to figure out most things, such as working with layers.
I have an image of one of our products we manufacture that I removed the background with the Magic Extractor Tool. Now I would to put some type of shadow on it so it doesn't appear as though it is floating in air. Can someone advise me this is possible and how to do it? I have found some instructions on drop shadows, but it must have been for a different version of PS or I just couldn't understand and follow it.
    Thank you,
    Karen

    Karen,
Here is a picture of a hammer with a drop shadow
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1UQh0lep8aNRx3bcVIso6CW7KleoL0
Open picture file, duplicate background layer, work on background copy layer
Select hammer. It was on a solid white background, therefore I used the magic wand tool to select the background and hit delete on keyboard. The hammer should have "marching ants" around it, and the surrounding area should have a checkerboard pattern, which denotes transparency. You can use any of the selection tools!
Open the Effects palette, select Drop shadows from the drop-down, used High shadow, applied. Double click the f on the layer with the shadow to bring up the style settings dialog to fine tune.
Placed a blank layer beween background and background copy layers, and filled with red
Select>deselect gets rid of the marching ants
If you are so inclined, post a picture of one of your tools and we can work on it. You can post here via the camera icon in the reply box, or via pixentral.

  • Adding a SHADOW to the text doesn't work

I try to add a simple SHADOW in my Illustrator. But it not works at all.
Why? I don't understand it. I show this in thi film:

Because your drop shadow is 27mm to the right of the object. Zoom out and you'll see it. Change the x offset to .27cm instead of 2.7cm in the drop shadow dialog box.

  • HT3727 Adding a shadow to text in Pages 09

I do not have a "Shadows" button under the Fonts menu.  Very frustrating as I would like to add a shadow to some text.  Any suggestions?

You can click a text box to select it, and then in Inspector -> Graphic, click Shadow. The shadow controls are then live and what you choose is applied to all text in the text box.
    Or:
As Jerrold says, get the cursor showing inside the text box, go to the Fonts pane and click on the T (at the left of the red-edged oval in Jerrold's picture). Having that selected will cause the shadow controls in the Graphic pane to be live for whatever text you select in the text box. That way, you can select some text and apply some shadow settings. Then you could select some other text in that text box and apply different shadow settings.
You could try to effect shadow settings just using the other controls in the Fonts Panel, but they are too small and fiddly.

  • Adding drop shadow using CSS

I am fairly new to CSS and am designing a website where I
would like to use a drop shadow using CSS.
Currently I have a container div that is centred horizontally
in the browser window and want to add a drop shadow to this div, so
all content stays central in the browser window when it is resized.
    (similar to

    Any help/advice would be appreciated...
    Thanks

CSS doesn't make drop shadows exactly. You could configure
    one division on
top of another division with an offset but that's complicated
    when used on
an entire page. This basic tutorial shows how to bring 3
    image slices into
a CSS layout. (Use your own images and play around with it.)

  • How do I add a drop down Shadow with Photoshop Elements 12

I am having the greatest dificulty adding a shadow eccect to my photo, the tutorial is nothing like the software I am using, I have made the layers the back ground then croped my immage made i wanted to place on the background but when I try and use the Shadow drop down feature the bos when i hit control T is not controling the shadow but a copy of the image i want the to be shadowed withthe shadow, I am only guessing at this point but I think what I need to do is have a layer that has the shadow only but I am at odds on how to do It! I have found a tutoral video on line but the software is nothing like what I have I am in trial but at this point I am quite agervated and may soon deside on another photo editing software im a noob any help will be greatly apreciated. the effect i am trying to accomplish is place a dino at the lake with my grandson in it he loves dino dan and wanted to create a pic for him!

Neala, I was just about to post this when I saw you beat me to it !
Anyway, here is again spelled out.
    Willhamstin,
First of all, if a picture is too large to post in this forum, you can upload it to www.pixentral.com, a free service. The pic must be JPEG, GIF and PNG images under 2MB. Then post another reply here, giving the URL of the picture at pixentral.
Now as to your dino, try this:
    1. If the dino is on its own layer, skip to step 3.
    2. Select the dino using the various selection tools. Here I used the Magnetic Lasso which worked well. The selection doesn't have to be precise since the shadow will be distorted and blurred.
    3. Duplicate the dino layer.
    4. Fill the dino layer with black.
    5. Image > Transform > Distort, and drag the top center handle to create the shadow. You can also activate the Free Transform tool (Ctrl-T) and hold down Ctrl while dragging the handle.
    6. Apply a Gaussian Blur to the shadow.
    7. If there is excess shadow below the dino you can remove this by moving the shadow layer up and/or erasing the excess.
    8. To lighten the shadow, lower the layer's opacity.

  • Copy/Paste graphic w/drop shadow to indesign - loses transparency

See above image.. I made a vector version of our company logo in illustrator (all programs referenced are cs5 btw) and it looks great, but when I copy and paste from Illustrator to InDesign, it loses the transparency around the logo. If I place the logo instead, it works fine. The trouble is there are about 16 variations of the logo, and its MUCH easier to copy/paste from one aggregate file instead of having many different logo files to place.
Background on how the logo was created: The inner circle area is multiple different gradient layers (some with transparency masks as well). The white line around the outside is an expanded stroke, and it had a drop shadow effect applied (Stylize menu), which I expanded so it would scale properly when scaling the logo up and down. Here is a link to download the logo: download logo
Q: Is there any way to make InDesign preserve the transparency when I copy and paste?
Would be eternally grateful if someone has a solution that allows me to copy/paste!

I agree with Bob's suggestion to use separate "layer groups" in your logo file for different styles. I also use separate layers inside InDesign to "multi-purpose" company documents with different backgrounds, graphics, and content. But that's the only way I use layers inside InDesign – Not for general placement of image files! I also disagree with ability to copy and paste graphics from Illustrator with drop shadow. Here's an .ai logo which I quickly added Drop Shadow to in Illustrator CS4, and then a Copy and Paste into InDesign CS4 document. Best workflow practice is to 'Place' image files as Bob suggests, linking them from a separate file folder.
For something "quick and dirty" I see no problem with Copy and Paste, but your success may vary based on OS, and CS versions you are using!  Sometimes it is wiser to take a few shortcuts to hit rather than miss that deadline!

  • Line appears when applying drop shadow on large scale

    Hello!
Some weeks ago I had to make a large scale graphic (800mmx2000mm) for a roll-up banner. I wanted to apply a drop shadow to a rounded shape, and ugly lines came up. Since it was a bit urgent, I decided not to use it.
But now I'm curious, so I quickly made an ellipse and added a shadow, so you know what I mean. This also happens when I save it as pdf or image.
Perhaps someday I will have to use a drop shadow on large scale. So, does anybody knows how to fix this or what could I do in case I need to use this effect in these conditions? I use Illustrator CS6 in Mac with Mavericks.
    Thanks in advance.

I was able to create an ellipse to your dimension and got a good drop shadow. What happens if you manually make a drop shadow using appearance?
FYI I tried making the same using drop shadow filter in CS5 and got this error.
Incase your file was created in CS5 and opened in 6, I would recreate the drop shadow in CS6. I know they redid the gaussian blur in CS6, but not sure if that affected drop shadow.
CS6 is better on raster effects at large sizes.
My file was created and opened in CS6.
My ellipse is around 175cmx50cm. I tried it manually like you said and got the same results:
So, I guess I'm alone with such a problem. No idea what is wrong :/

  • BUG FOUND-- With Shadows on Non-FCP Generated Layers

In FCP 6, this bug has been verified by many other users on forums across the web such as CreativeCow, DVCreators, and more. This BUG is a "repeatable problem" with the software.
PLEASE take a moment to experiment with this so Apple can take care of this.
The quality of footage specifically when adding a Drop Shadow is degraded when scaled-down and rendered, (SEE LINK BELOW).
    http://www.jonesinc.com/tech/fcp_interlacecomp.jpg
This is simply scaling footage to 26% and adding a shadow.
NOTE: Scaling colorbars, a solid color, or any FCP generated object looks fine. We can export a clip from Final Cut and look on any Mac, PC, or monitor to see the issue is within the software converted file, not the video display.
The ONLY other time it looks correct is when you change the sequence settings so the FIELD ORDER is NONE, rather than Lower-field. However, this of-course will cause issues with the interlaced footage during playback for Broadcast...again not acceptable.
Various Codecs, Sequence settings, etc have been tested with the same poor results.
Again, this "Bug" has been verified several times with various systems, Operating systems, and versions of FCP. Again, PLEASE take a moment to experiment with this so Apple can take care of this.
    Sincerely,
    SYSTEM:
    FCP 6.0.2
    OS X 10.5.2 Leopard
    QT Version 7.4.1
    2 X 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    8 GB 800 MHz DDR2 DB-DIMM
Kona 3 HD with AJA breakout box
Apple 30" Cinema Display and out to 55" Hitachi Plasma

Sorry to report it is not working at all , allways the same message cant find the vido or audio file but in reality it work for the audio file but error occur at the video compression stage.
This is a bug since Apple suggest 1GB per core and i try as low as 4 instances , Without Share i can use with no problem at all 12 instances and it is realy fast and Share offer the selection of Quickclusters.
I short this Mac Pro cant use Share when any Quickcluster is in use as you see but i can use any Quickcluster when Share is not used to do Blu-Ray , so the important feature Share is Useless and since Apple promote it to do Blu-Ray one step we got a serious bug at the moment David.

  • Drop shadow won't show up, think it's cuz of the actionscript

Hi, can you please look at my site
    http://www.alphatecspine.com/
See the scrolling text on the flash banner? I added drop shadow filter to it and it isn't showing up, the drop shadow isn't there. I am making that scrolling happen with action script, could that have something to do with it?
    Thanks,
    Stan

no reason other than that I like to use ActionScript whenever I can. It's cleaner to update later on.

  • NO Shadows

I am having problems with shadows showing up in iWeb, but not appearing when the site is published. There is a problem here and it doesn't seem to be related to a specific browser. Shadows worked fine before in Firefox... and on Macs and PCs.
I have tried deleting shapes with shadows and reinserting new ones then adding a shadow... after publishing, the shadow does not appear on the web page for that shape.
I have tried adding a shadow to text as an object and that doesn't work either.
The only time the shadow shows up is when you highlight the text and then check apply shadow.
So, if anyone has any better ideas than, it is a Firefox issue, PLEASE let us know. JS

Got the same problem here too and it surely is an IWEB bug, not a firefox bug. For a simple reason. A website has to be compatible with the greatest number of browsers to be a good website. Firefox is one of the most used browser in the world, surely more sued than Safari, so making the site usable by Safari and not by Firefox is just a no-sense.
Plus Iweb worked in the previous version, why did I spend my money to have something that doesn't work and have almost no new feature (Plus some more templates, never used templates after all)?
This whole thing is a no-sense. Please, developers, do something about it, that's a significant DOWNGRADE in Iweb features. Very bad.
Apple software should be easy and immediate to use. This new IWeb is just unusable and buggish. That's absolutely baaad.
We want our shadows back and we don't want only people using IE or Safari to be able to browse our sites. Isn't that maybe, if someone wants to think really nasty about it, a move to have more people use Safari???
I really hope it is not. Because it was a really stupid move in any case.

  • Drop Shadow renders in opposite direction!

Added drop shadow to a clip. Direction is lower right (315 degrees). Looks right on screen. Export video. Drop shadow is to the upper left! Tried the drop shadow on both the individual item and on the group. Same results both ways. Move my drop shadow to the upper left in the project - exported movie has it to the lower right. Bizarre!
    --Kurt

Most NLE's use straight alpha. I have never rendered pre-multiplied except to demonstrate to students that they don't work well in most situations. I always edit my output module templates to get rid of the pre-multiplied settings. I never have figured out why they were the default.

  • Merging with a shadow/highlight layer?

Ok, so im totally new to Flash, in fact, im a 3DS Max/Maya animator, so this is all pretty new.
I am fairly fluent in Photoshop, and im trying to figure out a small problem I am having.
I will try to be as clear as possible, so bear with me...
I have created  a character (superman) in Flash (action script3) who is divided in many layers.
His eyebrows, mouth, wrinkles, eyes ect are all on seperate layers. I figured that was something you needed to do to allow ease in animation? Keep the head as one solid object, but keep the eyes, eyeborws ect on a different layer to animate... (right?)
After building the face color layer, I added a shadow and highlights layer on top of it. After doing so, I have tried to `merge` them (which i believe is when you make it a `symbol'?) and it gives me a strange result. Either the shaded areas turn black, or the cut out the color of the face, almost like they have become a mask.
Here is a before and after:
So im curious, is there any way I can merge my highlights and shadows layer to the base layer, without this problem? Or is there something I am missing. The shadows and highlights were made just by layering a black, or white, layer with opacity, over top of the solid color layer. I figured it would be as easy as it would be in Photoshop, just merge them in the end, but no. Then again, this is new software all together for me, so I could be missing something.
As you can see, its made up of many layers:
    So the other question is:
After I manage to merge the proper layers with each other (Face, face outline (stroke), highlights and shadows to make up the HEAD) how do I cut the rest of it up for animation?
Seeing as his body is one piece, from neck to feet (including arms), how am I going to cut that up and still maintain the vector lines? Or will I need to build the arms totally separate, and then layer it that way...
Sorry if I sound like a total noob, but I am...
    Thanks in advance

    Sorry, Flash CS5...
